Welcome Welcome to the autumn edition of our Essex Homes & Style magazine which is once again packed with some of the finest properties currently available for sale and to rent from across our region.

I am pleased to report that confidence has most definitely returned to the UK housing market. Spurred on by a more stable economy, a large number of buyers have been pulled in the direction of property and mortgage lenders have been influenced to offer more loans to buyers with smaller deposits. The uptick in confidence, beneficial to both buyers and sellers, is contagious!

The main house price indices are all showing upwards movements compared to this time last year. Similarly positive, the latest Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) survey indicates an improvement in sentiment with buyers increasingly returning to the market.

Beresfords’ very own research supports this opinion; only recently did we witness the highest level of house hunters search for property in five years, a considerable 24% rise from the previous year. Another highly important factor is the level of sales agreed which also rose by an equivalent amount, just over 25%. In particular, our branches on the London/Essex borders have seen an influx from those looking for rural properties further out into Essex and the Country Homes market has certainly gathered pace as a result. For those considering a ‘move to the country’ please read the interview on page 44 with myself and our Country Homes Manager, James Caffrey, on this market as a whole.

So what’s driving this upturn? There are of course many different factors but the revival of the mortgage market is certainly a major contributor. According to the Bank of England, gross mortgage lending over the summer – at £14.8 billion - was up 24% on a year earlier.

There have been positive signs among all categories of lending, with mortgages for first-time buyers showing the most notable improvements which had triggered a ripple of activity all the way up the property ladder. Mortgages are much more affordable for first-time buyers compared to last year, which has opened the door to thousands of would-be buyers who previously may have struggled to take that first step.

We have found that the lettings market continues to be extraordinarily busy and this is characterised by the continuing strong rental values being achieved with the high number of tenants looking to rent, which is still outstripping supply in the lettings market. As a result both new and seasoned buy to let investors are contacting our dedicated Property Investment Division on a regular basis to enquire about upcoming opportunities. Autumn is traditionally the second busiest time for the property market and with all the factors that drive the property market on the rise, there is no reason why this trend should not continue. For those of us who are planning to move to a new home, it’s natural to want to have it all done and dusted in time for Christmas so that you can enjoy the festive period in your new home.

If you are thinking of selling or letting a property, I strongly believe that the current market might be the opportune time bearing in mind the current levels of consumer confidence. n 2006 there were 2.4 million homes across the UK within the private rented sector. By 2012 this had risen to 4.2 million and it is anticipated that, as we reach 2021, the number of rented homes will exceed 7 million.

Steven Bond, Managing Director of Beresfords Investment Division, provides an overview on the everincreasing demand for rented accommodation.

“Over the last five years there has been a noticeable shift in the number of people looking to rent a property rather than buy and there are a number of reasons for this. Unfortunately, many people, especially those under the age of 35, find it hard to save sufficient funds to raise the deposit required to obtain a mortgage. They are, therefore, left with little choice but to enter the rental sector as tenants. Ever-increasing numbers of people are arriving in the UK from overseas to work and most have no desire to purchase a property as they do not intend to remain in the country indefinitely.”

Many young people see renting as a more flexible option and this has helped fuel the growth of the rental sector over recent years. Current indications are that there is no sign of this trend changing in the short to medium term.

Currently, the rental market is awash with tenants but there is a distinct lack of available stock. In turn, this scenario of demand outweighing supply has meant that rents have increased, which has been great news for landlords but has come at a cost to tenants.

Across the region, landlords can expect to see returns ranging between 5% and 8%. Understandably, many people, who have never previously thought of renting out, are now considering buying a second property to let, because such returns are significantly better than many other types of investment.

Steven continues: “People have become sceptical about the long-term returns of pensions and opt, instead, to invest their money into buy-to-let as there are a number of noticeable benefits. Firstly, as the owners, they are in complete control of their investment and are not in the hands of Fund Managers within large corporate organisations. Secondly, property is flexible in as much as you can retain it and enjoy the rental income it generates, sell it or refinance against it for other purposes. This can be initiated at any time, whereas with a pension you need to wait until retirement age to receive the maximum benefit available. Finally, in the event of death, a property is an asset which can be passed on in its entirety to a husband or wife and, in turn, to children or other relatives.

With a pension, only part of the benefit can be transferred to a spouse, but then when they pass away, the pension benefit ceases, so nothing is left to any children.

“There has been a noticeable increase in the number of ‘virgin’ landlords entering the buy-to-let market. Some have savings, which form a deposit for the purchase, while the remaining funds are financed with a lender offering a specific

buy-to-let product. Others have a large amount of cash which has previously been invested elsewhere, but with limited returns. Their priority is to ensure a regular source of monthly income to help towards general day-to-day living, which a buyto-let property can provide.”

A common fear is that the property will not be looked after during a tenancy, but we employ our own Inventory Clerks and inspect each ‘managed’ property on a regular basis throughout a tenancy to ensure that it is being well cared for by the tenants.

“Often it is fear of the unknown which holds people back from becoming a landlord. For these reasons alone, we offer every client a free consultation at the outset, which helps explain all that is involved. My team also discuss how and where to start and include advice on funding options and tax liabilities.’

Steven concludes: “There is now a wide range of funding options specifically geared towards buy-to-let properties. It can be very time-consuming for individuals to trawl the internet or visit numerous High Street lenders. Young at heart Rhiannon Smith meets professional make-up artist Louise Young, who has provided her expertise to some of the most famous faces in the world and is now celebrating more than 30 years in the industry

A

s I admire the craft that Louise Young has so beautifully honed over the years, the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson spring to mind: ‘Love of beauty is Taste. The creation of beauty is Art.’ For there is no doubt that within her career as a professional make-up artist, the work Louise has contributed to all areas of the industry – from film, television and fashion, through to commercials, theatre and special effects – are nothing short of masterpieces. Just as a painter transforms a canvas into a work of art, a make-up artist transforms the human ‘canvas’ into something extraordinary; enhancing physical features and creating a character that seems to surpass the ordinariness of the human form. And Louise Young is no exception.

“I count myself very lucky to have a career that I am passionate about,” she admits, when asked how it feels to create an emotional response in people through art. And the passion that Louise professes is unquestionable. Make-up stands as an art form that has been an integral part of human culture for centuries; and throughout Louise’s work, you can see that she recognises the power of make-up not only to construct the self-esteem and confidence of an individual, but to stimulate the senses of the viewer, and inspire a reaction.

When I ask Louise what has driven her to achieve such success in this industry, her honest and clear-cut reply speaks volumes: “I truly love working and making people up. It is a

very satisfying career and one which I love more and more even though I have been doing it for over 30 years,” she reveals. This scale of passion and commitment is infectious, and I can’t help but be curious as to the source of Louise’s inspiration. “I was interested in make-up from a very early age. I loved old films and the golden age of Hollywood, and was an avid collector of film annuals and film magazines,” she explains. Just like so many people before her, Louise became captivated by the glamorous image of classical Hollywood stars, and the air of mystery that they retained. The combined artistry of cosmetics and photography in Hollywood’s golden era enabled stars to appear as gods and goddesses; and this creative ability to make a person appear almost untouchable is something that Louise undoubtedly strives to achieve within her own work.

It’s unsurprising, then, that when asked to reveal the job that she has enjoyed the most out of her entire career – from an overwhelming résumé of such famous faces as Jodie Kidd, Julian Clary, and Alesha Dixon, and such films as Clash of the Titans, Pride and Prejudice and Bridget Jones’s Diary – Louise refers to a time when her artistic talent was truly put to the test: “I so enjoyed doing the make-up for Alan Rickman on an Anthony Minghella film called Play,” she says.This was a film interpretation of one of Samuel Beckett’s theatrical productions, in which three characters, who are trapped in purgatory, recount the events that brought them there.

Make-up stands as an art form that has been an integral part of human culture for centuries Later revealing to me that her love of working within the fashion aspect of the industry is also down to being given a greater amount of artistic control over the required look, it is clear from Louise’s recollections that she thrives off the prospect of stretching her creativity.

As a closing note to the outstanding standards of artistry that she exhibited within the film set of Play, Louise reveals her most agreeable quality of all: “The people around me were all great at their jobs, which helped produce a great end result,” she says. Indeed, Louise’s love of meeting and forming friendships with a range of people from all walks of life, amongst her unassuming mentality that the success of her work relies on a wealth of other components, is prevalent throughout the interview from start to finish: “I love the camaraderie on film and television, as you are usually part of a large team,” she later discloses, when asked what the most rewarding aspects of her career have been. “Working on the film Dean Spanley with Peter O’Toole was brilliant, and I also loved Strictly Come Dancing, as we got to know all the professional dancers so well!”

It was beginning to become clear why this particular make-up artist has achieved so much success. Even from just speaking with Louise, it is undoubtedly apparent that she encompasses an ability to draw energy from the people surrounding her, and then channel it into her work. And when I raise the question as to what qualities a person should possess if they are to become successful in the make-up industry, Louise ironically responds with some of the characteristics she so clearly radiates: “Punctuality, stamina, perseverance, confidentiality, determination, good social skills, manners and to be a good team player.”

Yet, with the importance of self-image and the ideals of female beauty becoming more enforced in Western society, I also suggest that – perhaps – perspective is something that is required from a make-up artist in this modern day and age, as well. For it is problematic, that when creating looks of ‘natural beauty’ – whether it be for commercials, television or film – the industry produces a standard that is so perfect, it inevitably has a dramatic effect on how a woman chooses to present herself to others, and how she views herself in private. When asked if she thinks everyone looks better with make-up, Louise says: “I think part of the skill of the job is to know how much to apply and when to stop, so you enhance the looks rather than overwhelming them.” Indeed, for many women, the application of make-up to attain flawless skin and defined features has become part of their everyday routine; but should the mass media stop generating and upholding such a narrow and unrealistic view of what it takes to be beautiful?

With her experience and knowledge of the industry, Louise suggests that we can do one better; and instead of destroying the effect of what is ultimately produced as a piece of art, responsibility should be claimed by photographers, make-up artists and stylists alike to inform and educate the public. “I lecture to young people a lot, and I have noticed that over the last five years they are much more aware that images they see in magazines are retouched”, Louise clarifies, when asked how she feels about the focus on appearance in today’s world and its effect on the younger generation. “This awareness is a good thing so they are not striving for unrealistic goals.”

Having lectured in media make-up for more than 22 years and with both an HND and Btec National Diploma in Design/Media Make-up under her belt, it is evident that Louise has striven to break down such unrealistic goals for a large part of her career. From contributing to educational makeup books, to running a flourishing programme of short courses throughout the UK and internationally for students and lecturers alike aspiring to bring their make-up skills up to date, Louise has always been open about the facade of the industry: “I enjoyed teaching my customers how to achieve the looks themselves,” she explains, when talking about working in a retail environment with Max Factor and Elizabeth Arden at the start of her career.

And, as she has developed her vocation, Louise naturally wanted to make her knowledge of the industry more accessible through the launch of her own cosmetic and accessories range: “I had always had it in my mind that I would do a range one day. I started with the brushes as I know the difference great brushes make. I designed the range to make it easier to gain professional results. The make-up seemed a natural progression. I want to create a small but perfect range!”

Boasting the crème de la crème of clients – including L’Oréal, Michiko Koshino, Revlon and Levi’s – the success of Louise Young’s career speaks volumes for the quality of her brand, and stands as a testimonial to the ‘perfection’ of her make-up and brush range, as well as any endeavours she may pursue in the future. With such expertise in make-up artistry, beauty no longer needs to be in the eye of the beholder!

The Art and the Craft Faith Back talks to Peter Hare, one of the directors of Hare & Humphreys, Britain’s leading company specialising in the interior decoration, conservation and restoration of historic buildings

W

hile this year has marked the 60th anniversary of HM The Queen’s coronation and we have rejoiced in the recent birth of George, Prince of Cambridge, the events that celebrated the Diamond Jubilee of 2012 are not soon to be forgotten. One of the most memorable occasions was the magnificent Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant, when up to 1,000 boats from across the UK, the Commonwealth and around the world assembled for a maritime parade on an unseasonably chilly and rain-drenched River Thames. In pride of place at the head of the largest flotilla to be seen on the river for more than 350 years was HM The Queen’s dazzling new Royal row barge, Gloriana, which had been commissioned by Lord Sterling. The barge has now become a ‘national icon’ and has been used in landmark events such as the carrying of the Olympic Flame, the new Lord Mayor’s arrival in London, and Henley Royal Regatta. The Royal Family has also used the barge for private occasions.

But just who were the skilled craftspeople behind the completion of this fabulous newly-built wooden vessel? The story starts way back in the 1970s, when a young Peter Hare discovered some books on church restoration showing pictures of their beautiful interiors, while visiting a technical college in East Ham. Peter remembers: “An old chap came over to me as I was looking at them and I was saying how wonderful the artists were. He told me they were craftspeople and that you could be taught and trained in these arts and skills. This was really the first inspiration I had to join the profession and to try to get into church and historic decoration.”

Some years later, in 1978, having worked for a leading church

redecoration company, Peter found himself working on the reinstatement of the William Morris room at the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London, as Peter explains: “It was here that I first met Paul Humphreys, who was going to be my foreman for the project. During the six weeks that we worked at the V&A on the Morris Room, we wandered the galleries at lunchtimes and break times looking at the creations of Morris, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Voysey and others.”

Peter and Paul discovered a mutual passion for the skill and craftsmanship of the mid-Victorian Arts and Crafts movement and for the work of Pugin in particular. They also discovered a shared vision of reviving the apparently diminished respect for decorators, conservators and artists by creating a modern company for the 20th and 21st centuries, which would uphold the uncompromising values of Victorian craftsman such as Thomas Kershaw and the influential Crace family. But the fulfilment of that shared vision was still some years in the future.

Peter started up his own business in 1980 and over the next few years, Peter, Paul and their separate teams worked together on a number of projects both at home and abroad, such as the external regilding of the Palace of Westminster, as well as the internal ornamental decoration and graining schemes of the current House of Lords chamber and the Peers Lobby ceiling.

As their portfolios grew, so did their reputations. However, it was not until 1986 that their collaboration was cemented in the creation of Hare & Humphreys Ltd, when their individual teams were brought together to undertake the complete redecoration of London’s finest 18th-century townhouse, Spencer House in St James’, as Peter recalls:

“Spencer House was a complete watershed in my career and that of Paul Humphreys. It was a huge opportunity for us. I’m still staggered to this day that David Mlinaric, the lead interior designer of Mlinaric, Henry and Zervudachi, allowed these relatively young guys – although we had already got quite a CV together – to take on such an important project.

The real cementing came because of the project’s substantial value and size: nearly two years of work for more than 20 people, which had to be juggled alongside their other works. The financial and staffing resourcing commitments really pulled us together to become one limited company.

If Spencer House hadn’t come around, it’s highly likely we would have continued with separate identities.”

Spencer House had been out of the Spencer family’s hands for more than a century when it was purchased by an asset management company chaired by Lord Rothschild, who commissioned the restoration.

Nevertheless, Princess Diana took a special interest in the work on her former ancestral family residence and made frequent informal visits to see how Peter and Paul were progressing. There is no doubt that their work on this exceptional building widened the scope of opportunities that were made available to Hare & Humphreys.

And then, in November 1992, came the horrific fire at Windsor Castle, which spread from The Queen’s Private Chapel to the State Apartments, destroying or damaging more than 100 rooms. Hare & Humphreys were asked to make an assessment of the damage and to consider aspects of the castle’s reinstatement. The devastation is one of Peter’s most vivid memories: “To see this incredible building in such a shambles was shocking;

although the fire was out, the fire brigade and a number of tenders were still around. It was very smelly and very damp. I remember a feeling of abject horror really; when you stood inside what had been a magnificent building and you see just brick and a few sections of plaster hanging off the walls. Standing there in the midst of such huge devastation is without doubt something that will be with me for the rest of my life.”

But vivid for Peter too was the sight of the magnificent completed restoration work: Hare & Humphreys won the tender to restore the Crimson Drawing Room, the Green Dining Room, St George’s Hall and eventually the State Dining Room. After the restoration, the company also went to work in the Queen’s own private quarters.

Peter recalls: “The camaraderie and the teamwork that went into completing a large section of the Windsor restoration were wonderful; and of course to meet the Queen at the end, be thanked and then to eventually receive the Royal Warrant was a great accolade for the company.”

But Hare & Humphreys don’t just work on the conservation and restoration of grand public and historic buildings; they also take on residential projects and create new design work. Projects can involve a mixture of these elements and range from a complete building to a single room, or even just a door or a staircase. “There are no hard and fast rules as to how the work comes; it’s quite diverse really.” But, whatever it is, Peter’s principles remain the same: “What you work at as an MD and how I deal with my staff ensures that every single project receives the same attention to detail. That way, you are constantly reaffirming your commitment to the clients, the team and the industry.”

Returning to the Gloriana, Hare & Humphreys were greatly excited to be commissioned by Lord Sterling to undertake the barge’s decorative and art works. The external decoration was executed after a great deal of research and adherence to protocol, advised by the Royal College of Arms but, internally, Peter had much more of a free hand as he proudly recalls: “There were 12 blank ceiling panels; originally I wanted to create coffered or trompe l’oeil design work but the ceiling is very low, just over two metres, so heavy ornamentation would be quite oppressive. One evening, when I was in my office pencilling away, I had a sort of eureka moment. What about birds of the Thames? If created, it would unite the whole length of the Thames; from the kingfishers of the pretty boroughs of Richmond and Hampton, to the oyster catchers of the estuary in the East End of London, where I was born and raised and of which I’m incredibly proud. Lord Sterling, once we showed him our design, loved it. We had complete freedom, no permissions were required, and no one other than our artists and Lord Sterling saw the panels before they were fitted.”

Having worked on so many iconic buildings already, Peter was floored when asked if there was a building that he dreamed of working on one day. Still fresh in his mind was the wonder of the company’s recent work on the Soane Museum: “When we go back to the great, great architects of this country, all we can do, by using paint and imagery, is to underline the beauty of what they build, and if we can create something of architectural significance then that’s hugely important. The Soane Museum is a wonderful property... but I would love to work on the Palace of Versailles, which I have loved since childhood.”

What of the future for Hare & Humphreys? Peter sees the company’s investment in young people as key to the survival of the arts and crafts skills in the years ahead. The company has usually taken on two apprentices each year and nearly one third of the team of 60 are current or ex apprentices: “You regularly need to freshen up and you need to find young people that have the mix of ability, energy and drive.You look for people that inspire you and share your ambitions; they’re very difficult to find but we do. We have a commitment to design, to beauty and to authenticity, and we often take decisions against our better judgement financially because it’s for the better of the building or the substrate; you have to do that if you want to be the best.You have to divorce yourself constantly from what’s financial gain and deliver what’s appropriate. Most people can’t believe that, but that’s what makes the difference with Hare & Humphreys, and that’s why our reputation is what it is.

“We’re very, very much a team. I might be the skipper of the ship, but I couldn’t sail the ship without the rest, absolutely no chance. I rely on everybody. They inspire me and, hopefully, me them. And the wonderful thing is that I enjoy going into work, meeting my team, old and young, discussing the challenges of current work, reviewing old projects, looking forward to new projects and guiding them.You don’t want to just sit and look at your old history books, it’s a happening industry.”

his October the British capital will truly be opening its arms to the spirit of cocktails with the fourth annual London Cocktail Week.

If you love to mix up your own cocktails, or you just enjoy drinking them, then the event that urges you to ‘get ready to shake, sip and party your way to a fantastic celebration’, is definitely for you. It is a week dedicated to cocktail culture, offering drink-making sessions and numerous parties – and all based in the beautiful and historic Seven Dials village in Covent Garden.

Taking place from Monday 7 to Sunday 13 October, the event was founded in 2010 and is the biggest of its kind in the UK. Attracting tens of thousands of people from around the world, London Cocktail Week has proved incredibly popular since its inception.

Shaking up the city

Sam Store looks ahead to London Cocktail Week, the largest drinks event in the UK Co-founder Hannah Sharman-Cox tells us what it is that makes London Cocktail Week so special: “Whether you’re from London or from out of town, there is always something new to explore, and London Cocktail Week makes discovering new places even more possible.”

In 2013, London Cocktail Week will take over the seven streets of Seven Dials with a range of pop-up bars and exclusive events, ensuring the area will be buzzing with cocktail lovers. There will be a host of events on show throughout the area with the aim of enticing cocktail lovers to “explore the wealth of pop-up bars and soak up the street party atmosphere.”

And it’s not only Seven Dials that will be embracing London Cocktail Week this October, as more than 150 of the best bars across the capital will also be taking part, by offering unlimited £4 cocktails throughout the week to those with London Cocktail Week wristbands.

Each bar will offer an individual cocktail for the week, as Hannah explains: “Each bar has chosen one cocktail that they want to show off to London Cocktail Week goers. It encourages people to try something they may not have had the nerve to try before – and usually they love it!”

London Cocktail Week wristbands, which cost £10 and are purchased before the event, can be collected from a specially created pop-up bar, which forms the hub of the event within the heart of Seven Dials, The Ketel One Club. Wristbands are a ‘must-have’ for the week, giving you access to discount deals and special events. They also allow wearers to benefit from free rides on vintage Routemaster buses, to make travelling across the city to Cocktail Week’s cherry-picked bars easy and safe.

In the stylish Seven Dials area, London Cocktail Week seems to have found an ideal home. The seven streets, which all converge upon the famous central sundial pillar, are lined with independent boutiques, heritage brands and indulgent beauty and grooming salons, while there is also a range of restaurants from around the world.

Hannah expounds on why the location of London Cocktail Week is so special: “Seven Dials has a wonderful village feel, with a brilliant combination of great bars, cool restaurants, high-end boutiques and luxury hotels. This year, we’ll be working with lots more of the shops within Seven Dials, putting mini pop-up bars into them, so you can shop and sip at the same time.”

When asked what we can expect at this year’s event, Hannah says: “As always there is a lot going on. On top of the cocktail tours, we have something for everyone, from bespoke mixology classes to fantastic parties; just check out our schedule online.” Venues from across Seven Dials will be hosting masterclasses from the likes of Tanqueray Gin, Bacardi Rum, Belvedere Vodka, Money Shoulder Whisky and Carounn Gin. The Cocktail Tours are a standout feature of the week – and are referred to as the ‘most visible and inclusive part of the festival.’ Using your wristband, these tours allow you to experience a variety of venues that you may have never known about before. Sharing their dedication of delivering wonderful service, excellent drinks and a great experience, these venues will all be offering the bespoke £4 cocktails, seen throughout London Cocktail Week.

The event welcomes both cocktail novices and experts alike, with a range of seminars and advice on offer. At The Ketel One Hub, experts from spirit brands will be on hand to provide drink-making tips, while wristband wearers will be able to engage in training and sampling sessions. The information on offer varies from how to order cocktails, to the finesse of creating the perfect drink, as Hannah elaborates: “London Cocktail Week seminars cover everything, from how to order the perfect martini, to the ideal temperature of ice in your cocktail. We really encourage masterclasses aimed at all levels of knowledge, so there is truly something for everyone.”

It encourages people to try something they may not have had the nerve to try before – and usually they love it!

Hannah also has some advice for those who are new to cocktails and experiencing the event for the first time: “We’d say try to be as experimental as you can. We have more than 150 bars on the cocktail tours, each serving one signature cocktail, so it’s a perfect opportunity to try lots of different flavours.” A good place to start could be The Seven Dials Club, hosted by Time Out, a specially created pop-up bar with a capacity of 300 and an extended licence to keep the party spirit going for the entirety of the event.

Commenting on the rise in popularity of London Cocktail Week, Hannah says: “We’ve steadily been growing and growing year on year – the first year we limited it to 5,000 [attendance], but every year more and more people have joined in the celebrations. This year, for the first time since 2010, we’ll be limiting it again, so it’s worth getting your wristband sooner rather than later!”

Happy birthday to Who Simon Burton looks at how the world’s best-loved Doctor is celebrating his 50th anniversary

A

ccording to Guinness World Records, Doctor Who is not only the longest running science fiction programme in the world, but also the most popular. This year celebrating its 50th birthday, Doctor Who has garnered a loyal legion of fans across the globe and has been nominated for – and won – a multitude of awards over the last half century.

To mark the historic occasion, a special 50th anniversary episode will air in November this year, and in usual Doctor Who fashion, it has been shrouded in secrecy, with only a few small snippets of information being revealed so far.

As is appropriate for a programme about adventures in time and space, the 50th anniversary is a mix of referencing the past and looking to the future. The episode will be shown simultaneously in several countries, including the USA, and will mark the first time a BBC programme has been shown both in 2D on BBC One, in 3D on the BBC HD channel, and in select cinemas around the country. On the use of 3D, lead writer and showrunner Stephen Moffat said: “It’s about time. Technology has finally caught up with Doctor Who and your television is now bigger on the inside; a whole new dimension of adventure for the Doctor to explore.”

The episode will also feature two different Doctors, Matt Smith’s Eleventh and David Tennant’s Tenth, as well as the appearance of John Hurt’s previously unknown past incarnation, teased in the closing moments of the previous episode. This multi-Doctor approach is in keeping with previous episodes celebrating certain anniversaries: 1973’s The Three Doctors for the 10th anniversary, 1983’s The Five Doctors for the 20th anniversary, and 1985’s

The Two Doctors, which marked the final full multi-Doctor episode until the 50th anniversary.

As with any good long-running series, the villains are just as important as the hero. While initial indications were that the episode would not feature a multitude of well-known villains, it has been confirmed that two of the Doctor’s most iconic enemies will be appearing: the Daleks and the Zygons.

Since their first appearance in 1963’s The Dead Planet, written

by Terry Nation, the Daleks have appeared in dozens of episodes and become a pop-culture icon thanks to their ubiquitous cry of “Exterminate!” and their distinctive design by Ray Cusick, who died in February this year at the age of 84. The Zygons, on the other hand, despite their recognisable appearance and popularity, have only ever appeared in one story, the 1975 serial Terror of the Zygons. On the choosing of the villains for the 50th anniversary special, Stephen Moffat said: “The Doctor once said that you can judge a man by the quality of his enemies, so it’s fitting that for this very special episode, he should be facing the greatest enemies of all.”

Supporting the Doctor(s) and current companion Clara Oswald, played by Jenna Coleman, against these familiar enemies will be a host of well-known faces, including Billie Piper returning as former companion Rose Tyler, and Jemma Redgrave as Kate Stewart, daughter of the much-loved Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart. Also confirmed to appear are actresses Joanna Page and Ingrid Oliver.

In addition to the 50th anniversary episode, other celebrations this year include the third Doctor Who Prom, a Royal Visit, and a one-off drama exploring the origins of Doctor Who. Following the success of the 2008 and 2010 Doctor Who Proms, the 2013 Prom was held in July and showcased a selection of music from the series composed by Murray Gold, in addition to a ‘classic’ medley comprising music from stories first aired in the 1960s, 70s and 80s, together with the premiere of Song For Fifty, ‘which celebrates half a century of adventures in time and space’. Hosted by the current Doctor-Companion team of Matt Smith and Jenna Coleman, the evening also saw appearances by other characters and villains from the series, including the Fifth Doctor, Peter Davison and Carole Ann Ford, who played the Doctor’s granddaughter Susan.

Over its 50 years, Doctor Who has attracted a monumental range of fans, with even Steven Spielberg reported as telling Stephen Moffat “the world would be a poorer place without Doctor Who.” So to help celebrate the series’ half-century, their Royal Highnesses, The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, visited the BBC Cymru Wales’ Cardiff studios for a tour around the production offices with the Executive Producers, a flying lesson in the TARDIS from showrunner Steven Moffatt and Matt Smith, and a conversation with a Dalek, voiced

by Nicholas Briggs.

Perhaps most excitingly for viewers, the special 90-minute drama An Adventure in Space and Time will be broadcast this year, and will show

how the most popular science fiction series in the world came into being.

With a superb cast, including Jessica Raine, Brian Cox, Sacha Shawan and starring David Bradley as William Hartnell, the programme will dramatise what went on behind the scenes of the creation and evolution of Doctor Who in its very early years. On his reaction to being asked to star in the drama, David Bradley commented: “I’m absolutely thrilled. I first heard about this role from Mark [Gatiss, one of the writers] while watching the Diamond Jubilee flotilla from the roof of the National Theatre. When he asked if I would be interested, I almost bit his hand off! Mark has written such a wonderful script not only about the birth of a cultural phenomenon, but a moment in television’s history. William Hartnell was one of the finest character actors of our time and as a fan I want to make sure that I do him justice. I’m so looking forward to getting started.”

The inaugural episode of Doctor Who, An Unearthly Child, was first broadcast on 23 November 1963, after an initial delay of a minute and a half due to extended news coverage of the assassination of US President John F Kennedy. Since then, 790 episodes have been televised, as well as several mini-episodes, shorter internet episodes, and various other specials produced for a range of media, including the BBC Proms, Children In Need, and 1993’s Dimensions in Time,, which saw a 3D collaboration with the BBC One soap EastEnders to celebrate the 30th anniversary.

Since 1963, the now 1,000-year-old character (or so he says) has been played by 11 different actors, and in its 50th year will see the introduction of the 12th Doctor, in the form of actor Peter Capaldi, who will make his debut in the 2013 Christmas special.

This change in leading actor has been credited as one of the reasons the series has remained fresh and exciting, as each incarnation brings individual quirks and style to the role, which informs the stories they are involved in, giving the series a chance to explore themes and ideas through several different performances and eras.

Originally conceived as an educational programme, Doctor Who uniquely allows writers to set their stories wherever and whenever they like, thus teaching younger viewers about historical settings and figures, as well as futuristic science and technology. The fantastical settings allow the series to explore more complicated or adult themes in a way that is enjoyable and suitable for family audiences, particularly the Doctor’s abhorrence of guns, and, in several cases, the meaning of life, the universe and everything.

Many television series are cancelled and revived years later, but since returning to our screens in 2005, Doctor Who has shown such astounding success, that only ten years previously would have seemed absurd. With the famous blue Police Box now ingrained in the public consciousness and the past 50 years of the series becoming a year-long celebration by the BBC, there is no limit to what the next 50 years might hold.

A race to remember Sam Store spends a stunning weekend at Formula One’s jewel in the crown event – The Monaco Grand Prix

F

rom my seat in the Casino Square grandstand I can hear a faint roar of an engine in the distance, while the presence of Monte Carlo’s world famous and historic casino looms in the foreground. The luxury yachts are lined along the harbour, while the rich and famous are peering down across the circuit from their high-end hotels. It is a dream scene that is immediately brought back to life by the sound of Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes thundering through Casino Square’s bumpy left-and-right.

The Formula One Monaco Grand Prix is the ultimate event for any motorsport fan, and looking directly across at the Casino, I was entertained by the certain irony that luck had brought me to the most glamorous sporting event in the world. After winning a competition associated with Castrol, I was given a choice of any Formula One event.

My decision was instantaneous – it could only be the Monaco Grand Prix, a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the race that celebrities flock to, and the best drivers in the world push themselves to the absolute limit for around the tight and twisty Monte Carlo streets.

Heading into the weekend, I reflected on my personal memories of Formula One’s classic race, which are mostly of racing legend Ayrton

Senna. The Brazilian won six times around the streets and proved that the race is a true test of a driver’s ability, as they strive to thread their way through the barriers. Not only a test of skill, but a test of true concentration, the Monaco Grand Prix is about much more than the glitz and glamour.

From our hotel in Nice, we arrived at the principality for the first time on Saturday morning.

Heading towards the circuit, the first thing that strikes you is the Prince’s Palace: sitting high above the principality, it sets the tone for what is to come. A haven for the rich and famous, the streets are lined with big label shops and high-end super cars. It was easy to feel out of Nico Rosber g on his way place walking through the Monaco streets, but to fastest tim e in Saturday setting the that feeling soon dropped when it became clear ‛s qualifying session that among the crowd were thousands of avid Formula One fans from around the world – all wanting a taste of the holy grail of Formula One.

Our allocated seats for Saturday’s action were at the far end of the circuit, opposite the historic Casino. It is a glorious section on television, but even better in person, with a wonderful landscape of the sea and cliffs in the distance, creating an idyllic backdrop to the racing. The first taste of Saturday’s action was the final Formula One practice session, as the teams finalised their preparations for the upcoming qualifying session and race. With the sun beaming down on the circuit, the conditions were ideal, but it didn’t stop Force India’s Adrian Sutil from clattering the barrier in front of our grandstand. As he climbed out of the stricken Force India, it showed the price of pushing too hard around the streets, with his car needing serious repairs before the qualifying session.

Following the practice session there were a few support races, keeping the action flowing before the big event of the day: the Formula One qualifying session. The glorious sunshine from the morning had vanished and a shower left the track damp, which was sure to spice up the hour-long qualifying session. As the cars bolted to the track for the first qualifying session, the likes of Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso carefully glided their way past the casino on the slippery surface. As the track dried, the times tumbled and the first six cars were eliminated, including the Ferrari of Felipe Massa, whose car was still damaged from a shunt in third practice.

Qualifying boiled down to the final session, when the track had dried, presenting a mouth-watering battle for pole position. With perfect track conditions, the Red Bulls of Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber, the Mercedes’ of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, the Lotus of Kimi Raikkonen and the Ferrari of Fernando Alonso would all be in contention for pole. It was thrilling as they all flew through Casino Square in front us, all gunning for the top position. As the dust settled, Nico Rosberg set a blistering pace to take pole, with Hamilton in second, reigning world champion Vettel in third, Webber in fourth, Raikkonen fifth and Alonso taking sixth. Although the race around the streets is often processional, with the pole sitter winning, I was brimming with optimism that Sunday’s race could be a classic.

Arriving at the circuit for race day, the principality was buzzing.

An enthralling day of racing awaited, with two support races, followed by the epic Formula One Race in the afternoon. Hollywood A-listers Leonardo Di Caprio and Cameron Diaz were in attendance, as well as George Lucas and David Hasslehoff. For Sunday’s action, we found ourselves seated opposite the harbour, with a great view across Monaco, as well as the numerous luxury yachts. From our seats, we were ideally placed for the swimming pool chicane and tabac corner, where the cars sweep through a quick left and right at around 150 mph.

With the grandstands packed, fans gathered on their yachts and on their hotel balconies to watch, as the cars lined up for the start of the 72nd Monaco Grand Prix. As the lights went green, we looked up on the giant TV screen on the hill in front of us, as Rosberg held off Hamilton and Vettel into turn one. Rosberg led the pack through Casino Square and the Mirabeau hairpin, before heading into the famous tunnel, as the sound of 22 Formula One cars blitzed our ears and came thundering through the chicane just metres in front of us. It was truly a once in a lifetime experience, as the whole field flew past for the opening lap of the Monaco Grand Prix.

The race turned into the usual Monaco procession, with Rosberg leading a train of cars, followed by Hamilton, Vettel, Webber, Raikkonen and Alonso. While there was little overtaking, the race was still gripping and incident packed.The Caterham of Charles Pic caught fire at Rascass, and Felipe Massa managed to shunt his car into Sante Devote for the second time of the weekend.This brought the safety car out and allowed Vettel and Webber to pass Hamilton, leaving the British driver fourth.

McLaren’s Sergio Perez got creative with his overtaking and attempted some daring moves coming out of the tunnel. The Mexican got a bit too bold later on in the race and ploughed into the side of Kimi Raikkonen’s Lotus. We were also in the ideal spot as Marussia’s Max Chilton unceremoniously shoved Pastor Maldonando in the Williams into the barrier, bringing the safety car out again. The closing stages of the race were tense, with Nico Rosberg holding on to win his first ever Monaco Grand Prix, and the Red Bulls coming home in second and third. While I can imagine the racing was dull on TV, aside from Perez’s antics, being at the event was a surreal experience. Just seeing the sheer speed through the barriers up close and soaking up the post-race atmosphere was incredible.

In recent years, new events have emerged onto the Formula One calendar as pretenders to Monaco’s title as the most glamorous race.

Indeed, the glittering Singapore night race and the twilight Abu Dhabi Grand Prix are stunning events, with amazing facilities and star-studded guests. However, none of these new circuits has the prestige and magic of the race around the historic streets of Monte Carlo. After my once in a lifetime weekend, I am certain that the Monaco Grand Prix will long reign as the jewel in the Formula One crown.

The Magic of Ischia Nina Saville samples the delights of the beautiful Italian island of Ischia

W

e are on a ferry from Naples approaching our port of call; Ischia. At first sight, the island gives the impression of a water colour: a palette of Mediterranean hues; mountainous cliffs dotted with chalky white and salmon pink villas; the coastline fringed by a blue-grey Tyrrhenian Sea. Why are we here? It’s all because of Angela Silva, the co-owner of the cosy Kensington family restaurant, Romano’s. Much was made of her visit to Ischia on her Easter break earlier this year: “Go to Ischia – you’ll love it!” she chirped.

As the largest island in the Bay of Naples – and, some say, the most beautiful – Ischia is famed for its volcanic thermal spas, as well as its beaches and food; so it didn’t take much convincing for my husband, Philip, and I to want to find out for ourselves.

With the desire to experience every aspect of this enthralling island, and with so many recommendations, we decide to stay in two hotels: a small, charming inn charging under €90 a night for travellers on a budget; and a five-star deluxe hotel for luxury travellers with no expense spared. The former of the two was passionately endorsed by Angela: “You can stay at Pepe’s place, Hotel Residence Sant’Angelo; it’s charming, reasonable and Pepe will look after you!” Similarly, our good friends – discerning architect Richard Mitzman, and his wife, international Tarot card reader, Annabelle – highly recommended their honeymoon hotel; the romantic Mezzatorre Resort and Spa, which is a member of the Leading Hotels of the World. And so, with the counsel of our friends guiding us to the isle of regeneration, energies, and beauty; our journey begins.

Travel Ischia on a budget – Hotel Residence Sant’Angelo The picturesque fishing village of Sant’Angelo, located within the southern half of the island, is an exquisite little charmer; and proprietors Pepe and Angela Pascale run a pleasant and popular three-star establishment nestled at the heart of it. The hotel itself features a large roof terrace granting panoramic views of the coastline, as well as an al fresco thermal pool; with a further pool indoors. The establishment is mainly B&B with room prices starting from €60 per night, offering a continental breakfast with freshly baked croissants and Neapolitan specialities, which Pepe is delighted to serve personally to his guests.

Having no restaurant as such, Pepe offers discounts across all compass points of the island. Of particular note is the elegant Celestino; predominantly a fish restaurant in Sant’Angelo fishermen’s port, which offers great food and value at €25 per person à la carte with Pepe’s special discount rate. However, Sant’Angelo fishing village surprisingly exudes more aromas of croissant than poisson; produced

from the array of stylish cafés and chic boutiques. Here, coffee is sipped, and photos are happily snapped by the chatterati; mostly Germans, Russians and Italians, with just a smattering of British tourists.

As with any budget accommodation, the Hotel Residence Sant’Angelo is not really ideal for nesting. Although there is a small beach on the other side of the road for guests who want to stay close to home, the establishment acts better as more of a base; a good place to yo-yo back and forth to must-sees, thermal spas and restaurants.

To venture away from the hotel for the day, taxis are expensive, so it’s handy that the bus stop is bang outside. Not that we didn’t fall prey to an expensive taxi or two, mind you. To dine at the Michelin-star restaurant in the opulent Regina Isabella hotel, in particular, meant a journey to the north of the island. But experiencing the truly exciting menu that Chef Pasquale Palamaro delivers, for a mere €85, is well worth the taxi fare. We both love the bite-size amuse-bouches of pea and shrimp; and Philip’s main course of mullet with sweet-and-sour spring onion, asparagus and quail eggs, sings of the sea; whilst my dish of guinea fowl with shallot and bay laurel sauce, potato flour and flying

Travel fish eggs is too delicious even to contemplate what it sings.

Philip later persists with a little vanilla semifreddo, bourbon and cherries in a crispy crust for dessert; he offers me a spoonful, but I decline since I’m watching my waistline. This unsurprisingly doesn’t last long as I surrender to the unannounced arrival of petit fours, which conclude the evening perfectly.

Aside from its food, Ischia is also famed for its thermal pools and health spas, where the glamorous Terme Manzi Hotel & Spa, in Casamicciola Terme d’Ischia, is particularly charming; it sits right beside the legendary Gurgitiello Spring, which rises up from the heart of the Ischia volcano. The charismatic medical director of Manzi Spa – Dr Pompeo Barbieri – praises not only the therapeutic properties of the special water source, but also its health benefits in sustaining wellness.

Indeed, the Gurgitiello Spring is sourced from deep within the soil, which makes it rich in volcanic chemical elements, and excellent for blood and lymphatic circulation. The combined effects of rich elements and heat – around 70 degrees – help eliminate toxins through sweating; a great antidote to ‘the good life’, if I’ve ever heard one.

After a wonderfully therapeutic massage, and an exhilarating swim in the fabulous thermal roof top pool, I am more than ready to meet Philip and our delightful guide – Romina di Meglio – to continue the rest of our adventure.

Forio d’Ischia is famed for many landmarks; and one of the main attractions of the area is the thermal park, Poseidon Gardens. For €25 a day, visitors can dunk themselves in 22 hot spring pools with temperatures ranging from 15 to 40 degrees; restoring body and soul.

Our guide also insists that on no account should we miss the gardens of Villa La Mortella, developed since 1956 by the late Susanna Walton, Argentinian wife of British composer, Sir William Walton; a mesmerizing display of more than 3,000 mediterranean and subtropical plants, including the largest water-lily in the world!

To bring our stay at Hotel Residence Sant’Angelo to a close, we lunch in Ischia Ponte at Ristorante Da Ciccio, where we sit in view of the magnificent medieval Aragonese Castle, which stands high on a volcanic rock, and ironically offers a glimpse of the grandeur we will hopefully experience in our next accommodation.

The five-star Mezzatorre Resort & Spa Forio d’Ischia From island hopper to island flopper, we have found our very comfortable nest for the next four days; the remarkable Mezzatorre Resort & Spa, which is perched high on a cliff, and is set within seven hectares of fragrant pinewood. We are staying in the skilfully renovated 16th-century look-out tower, in one of the 57 beautifully appointed rooms and suites, which start at €300 a night for bed and breakfast.

Our room is compact, but so well-designed: a refreshing use of colour with pale blue, white and taupe; a canopied four-poster with immaculate bed linen de rigueur; and a pretty bathroom replete with Etro fragrant freebies; whilst the adjacent terrace offers heart-stopping panoramic views of San Montano bay and the sea between Lacco Ameno and Forio.

The resort boasts a beautiful spa, where I am enticed by its thermal water track. Slipping from one pool to another, jets of water pummelling different parts of the body prove to be pleasantly painful, if there ever was such a combination. Next, I brave Kneipp Therapy; treading through alternating temperatures of warm and ice-cold water to boost circulation, which resulted in an exhilarating body frisson. On a lower terrace beneath the tower, we later swim in the superb outdoor heated seawater pool, while some guests boldly plunge straight into the sea from the platform on the rocks.

Meanwhile, the dining experience at the Mezzatorre is second to none, where we breakfast on the terrace at the Chandelier; a meticulously presented buffet offering copious five-star fayre, and a spectacular view to match. Later, we lunch at Sciué-Sciué, the

poolside restaurant, where you can opt for a cold buffet or an à la carte menu; the spaghetti vognole and seabass being both delectable and nutritious. As the afternoon draws in, the magic hour begins...

Cocktails are held in the courtyard, with one and all sipping Bellinis, and everywhere becomes drenched in a golden light.

Our candlelit dining experience in the evening is enhanced by views of the fiery orb of the sun slowly slipping into the depths of the horizon; leaving a trail of apricot and purple streaks. This is the most captivating setting for the divine gourmet menu; created by Ischitana chef, Giuseppe d’Abundo. With half board prices at €55, and visiting guests spending €85, this is a small cost to pay for four courses – each with a plentiful choice of fabulous dishes – served by the effortlessly attentive headwaiter and his excellent staff. It is, indeed, refreshing to eat at a superb restaurant truly deserving of a Michelin star. The healthy bean soup, along with the tortelli with prawns and exotic, fried and stuffed pumpkin blossoms to start were completely satisfying; while the main of Ischia-style cockerel with red onions, cherry tomatoes and vegetables was succulent and tender. The meal was complemented by a bottle of Casa d’Ambra, as well as a small and fluffy Saint Honoré for dessert; while a nightcap at the Gazebo piano bar offered a lovely way to end the evening.

After four heavenly days, we are leaving for the UK; and a speedy transfer to Naples airport arranged by the hotel – for €200 including hovercraft and taxis – meant that we were swiftly on our way back with easyJet to Stansted. A week later, and the benefits of our trip to Ischia are palpable; we both feel renewed, revitalised and frisky. The magical elements of this legendary island have worked their wonders; and all because of Angela!

urma... The Golden Land. It’s not often a country can live up to the hype that Burma is getting just now, but trust us, it certainly deserves it – especially if it’s an amazing photographic experience you are after.

This year’s Turner Prize shortlist continues the awards’ championing of modern art, as Simon Burton finds out

S

ince 1984, the Turner Prize has been celebrating new developments in contemporary art, each year awarding ‘a British artist under 50 for an outstanding exhibition or other presentation of their work in the 12 months preceding’.

Often controversial, the Turner Prize has provoked much discussion about the role of art and what is considered to be art in the modern world. While paintings and sculptures have been among past winning artworks, a ceramic, a sound installation, and a number of video works have also received the prize. This variety includes work by artists such as Gilbert and George, Anthony Gormley, Damian Hirst and Grayson Perry, supporting the aim of the Prize to commend contemporary art.

The winning artist receives £25,000, with £5,000 for each of the other shortlisted artists, in addition to the publicity and prestige that comes with being nominated for such a famous and influential award.

The Turner Prize is organised by the Tate and is usually held at the Tate Modern gallery in London, with exceptions in 2007 (when it was held at Tate Liverpool in support of Liverpool’s designation as the European City of Culture 2008), and in 2011, when it was held at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead.

This year, the exhibition will be held at the Ebrington site in DerryLondonderry, which is the inaugural holder of the UK City of Culture award, and marks the first time that the Turner Prize exhibition will have been held outside England. The 2013 show will be held from 23 October 2013 to 5 January 2014, with the winner being announced on Monday 2 December.

In 2013, the Prize showcases the work of four very different artists, nominated for a wide range of work: Laure Prouvost, Tino Sehgal, David Shrigley, and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye.

Laure Prouvost French-born Prouvost is best known for films and installations characterised by ‘richly layered narrative, language, translation and surreal interruptions’ and give audiences an unconventional experience between several mediums, often siting her film work within atmospheric installations. Prouvost has been nominated for her work Wantee and for the installation Farfromwords.

With Wantee, Prouvost offers a view on the artist Kurt Schwitters’ time in the Lake District, with a muddy cabin housing works by her fictional grandfather, who had also appeared in two previous works by the artist (2010’s The Artist, and 2011’s More From My Lost Grandfather).

The cabin was accompanied by a video exploring Schwitter and the work of Prouvost’s fictional grandfather. There was also a further installation at Tate Britain, which was modelled after a tearoom to encourage visitors to explore the artwork and furniture on display.

Farfromwords is an installation encompassing video, sculpture, language and image, inspired by the aesthetics and ‘sensuous pleasures’ of Italy, where the piece was created. The work was made as part of the Max Mara Art Prize for Women, and includes a large cylindrical structure screening Prouvost’s film Swallow, surrounded by imagery of Mediterranean foliage, beautiful women and ‘soft washed of azure blue’.

Lynette Yiadom-Boakye Winner of the 2012 Future Generation Art Prize, Lynette YiadomBoakye is best known for her large paintings of people, created from a combination of memory, imagination, drawing and scrapbooks.

While appearing somewhat traditional at first, Yiadom-Boakye challenges preconceptions by focusing on the often overlooked area of portraiture in modern art, and focusing her pieces on black characters.

Setting her subjects on abstract backgrounds, occasionally recognisable as landscapes or seascapes, she skilfully produces emotive works by juxtaposing this abstract backing with the precise detail she paints in the faces of her characters.

Nominated for the Turner Prize for her exhibition Extras and Verses, Yiadom-Boakye invites the audience to consider the stories behind her imagined subjects, describing her paintings as ‘paragraphs or sentences; traces of a moment in a narrative’. The subtle details of her works contribute to the formation of a story for the character, giving her work a more innovative and interactive appeal than at first glance.

David Shrigley Best known for his simple and direct drawings and animations offering satirical comment on everyday situations, David Shrigley has also worked across other mediums including photography, sculpture, animation, painting and music. His work frequently combines dark humour with macabre observations on life, as illustrated through I’m Dead and Grave Stones. Shrigley’s recent exhibition at the Hayward Gallery, David Shrigley: Brain Activity showcased a substantial number of new works alongside a selection of pieces created over his two decades of work, and resulted in his nomination for the 2013 Turner Prize.

Shrigley’s work shares similar ideas and themes of darkly humorous observation, to-the-point visuals, and what he calls ‘the economy of telling stories’. Together with the above examples, Shrigley’s recent animations at the Hayward Gallery demonstrate ‘short, sharp, repetitive quips’ with a cleverly composed combination of light and dark through the simplest forms of expression.

Tino Sehgal Based in Berlin, the work of Tino Sehgal consists entirely of live encounters between people, engaging with gallery visitors in ‘constructed situations’. His work often incorporates critical reflection and intimate conversations with members of the public, and utilises participants in performance or other improvised elements. Two such works have led to Sehgal’s 2013 Turner Prize nomination: This Variation and These Associations.

The intricate This Variation forces the audience to consider their senses, as a group of dancers perform in a completely blackened room, creating an ‘immersive bodily experience’. The piece allows sound, smell and the physicality of movement to mix with monologues and songs to create an enticing and intimate environment.

Meanwhile, These Associations was hosted in Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall, and involved a number of choreographed or structured elements interacting with visitors and the audience. The aim of the work was to challenge the preconception of the gallery as a quiet area for individual contemplation by creating a ‘dynamic group experience through seemingly familiar gestures’.

Each year, the nominees are judged by a panel of international experts with a variety of knowledge and experience. This year, the judges are: Annie Fletcher, Curator of Exhibitions at the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven; Susanne Gaensheimer, Director of Frankfurt’s Museum of Modern Art; Declan Long, writer and lecturer at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin; Ralph Rugoff, Director of Hayward Gallery in London; and the jury is chaired by Penelope Curtis, Director of Tate Britain.

With such a breadth of judging ability and four very different artists, this year is looking to be a very exciting time for modern art.

The best just got better Kevin Haggarthy gets to grips with some great new cars destined to become old favourites: the Range Rover Sport, the Maserati Ghibli Diesel, the Kia Pro_Cee’d GT and the BMW M6 Gran Coupe THe RANge ROveR SPORT The original Range Rover was quite radical when it was launched in 1970. Prior to that we hadn’t quite reconciled the concept of an off-road vehicle as a comfortable, go anywhere, day-to-day drive; a Landcruiser or a Land Rover was, well, just too hard core.

The Range Rover changed all that. It led to the birth of the Sloane Ranger, one of the few who, every morning, had the choice of going to work or on a safari in the same car – you could Range your Rover anywhere. It was a ‘Made in Britain’ car that actually worked and didn’t break down; capable as the camera car for Jurassic Park and a stunt car for the remake of King Kong.

The Range Rover has never been stronger in sales terms – selling in staggering numbers during an economic era when nobody is supposed to have any money. Their current 4x4 World Champion, launched only in autumn 2012, has been crowned undoubted King of Off-Roaders, and by one source as ‘the best car in the entire world’.

But now they’ve produced something even better – the new Range Rover Sport. We know ‘cause we drove it over two days and through the most arduous road challenges you care to name – shoulder height levels of water, mud inclines and declines so steep you just had to close your eyes and pray. Add to that maximum speed runs on a private runway, and maximum acceleration and braking runs (0-100-0 mph) – achieved in an impressive 16 seconds in our 5.0 litre.

It was unbelievably impressive, and I say that having done some pretty serious off-roading in my time; this one left me gobsmacked. Amazing.

You’d be wrong to see the new Sport as simply a performance version of the new car. It’s lighter by a staggering 420kg for a start, and sits lower than the standard Range Rover with a more compact and sporting grille. Available at launch with a 3.0 litre V6 diesel and the big (and best in our view) 5.0 litre V8 petrol engines, you’ll get more than enough real world road oomph with any option you choose. Side by side with the standard car, the Sport certainly cuts more of a dash without any hint of bling or flash – it’s just, well... cool.

Inside, the redesigned dashboard drives home just how much a fresh approach was needed, but by far the greatest improvement is the rear seating, which is now properly comfortable, with an impressive extra 24 mm of seating space. It can turn seven-seater too if you opt for the occasional extra two seat option, which lie flat in repose with no loss of boot space as a result. What’s more, the quality of fit and finish is altogether better than its predecessor.

Both the 3.0 litre diesel and the 5.0 litre petrol deliver excellent rides – the former is the Sport for the People in terms of cost and performance, while the 5.0 litre petrol is a fantastic V8 brawl with bigtime practicality to boot. Be assured, both can climb Everest.

Speaking of which, there is a whole gambit of terrain options, but you don’t need to use them; the latest Range Rover’s technology automatically enables the car to adapt its terrain options to suit.

So there you have it – a fantastic achievement for automotive technology... and British too!

The Maserati Ghibli Diesel My first Maserati, a 3200 GT, looked and sounded the business when it worked, but that wasn’t often; I’d be driving along and the front electric passenger seat would go forward and backward of its own accord, with no one sitting in it! My local Maserati dealer reckoned that the cars had what he called ‘occasional electrical idiosyncrasies’; it explained why the speedo needle read 180 mph when I was creeping out of the driveway, and 15 mph when I was screaming down the motorway on full throttle! Yet I loved it nonetheless, as did the motorway police.

And now here we are sitting behind the wheel of the all-new state-of-the-art Maserati Ghibli; the days of poor unreliable Maseratis are dead and gone. At first glance the new Ghibli looks similar to its big brother, the recently launched Maserati Quattroporte, but in Maserati’s own words, it is ‘smaller, shorter, lighter, less expensive and more economical’ than their flagship sports saloon.

In fact, the comfortable Ghibli feels as roomy back and front as the Quattroporte.

The functional and driver-focused dashboard has all the non-essential stuff such as navigation, heating, and premium music courtesy of Bowers and Wilkins, all housed in a central binnacle of a touch-control screen. The quality of fittings is satisfactory, if not uniquely plush, while boot space is excellent to the point of commodious.

For many drivers and passengers alike, this Ghibli could well be their first ever Maserati Experience. That’s because, starting at £48,830 – about half the price of ‘the big Quattroporte’ – it ticks all the right affordability boxes in real-world money terms. For similar money to a new well spec’d BMW 530d M Sport Series (£48,000) or a 3.0 litre Bi

Turbo Audi A6 S Line Quattro (£47,020) or a Mercedes E Class 250 CDi AMG (£38,910) you can now buy a Maserati!

In the 99-year history of the brand, this is Maserati’s first diesel engine. It’s a 3.0 litre common rail V6 Turbo Diesel, generating circa 275 bhp and a whopping 600 nm of torque. It does 0-62 mph in just over six seconds, and will power the Maser up to 155 mph. Let’s face it – where, bar a derestricted German Autobahn, can you go faster than that? It achieves proper sporting performance too; the power feed is progressive right the way through. Fuel consumption will matter with this option, and you’ll be looking at an average of 47.9 mpg, but if you go all out, it can get as bad as a measly 25 mpg.

Driven back to back, the turbo-charged V6 petrol version, especially the more powerful Sports (S) version (either 326 bhp or 404 bhp) is the more rewarding car. There are subtle handling differences between the petrol and diesel versions, mostly as a result of the gearing of the eight-speed paddle-shift ZF transmission (fitted to all versions of the car) and the different characteristics of the optional engines. Handling and grip are very good in both, achieved not least by the 50:50 weight set-up front and rear, multilink rear suspension, double wishbones at the front, and hydraulic assisted steering – giving the car responsive but sure-footed ride and handling, and it is well behaved and stable under firm braking on uneven surfaces.

A button on the floor-mounted transmission tunnel gives the steering a more sporting feel and quickens up the throttle response.

An independent button firms up the suspension; the difference in the ride and handling characteristics show more markedly when the car is put under high speed cornering pressure, where it performs well and safe as a result. Whilst grip is high, hard left-right directional changes will break traction, with instant cut-in from the traction control.

The Ghibli Diesel is a truly sophisticated Italian exotic sports saloon for the grown up enthusiast with a family, who wants to use a Maserati as an everyday vehicle.

The Kia Pro_Cee’d GT Out of all the cars we’ve driven recently, the Kia Pro_Cee’d’ GT has got us the most excited. Subjective, I know, but it looks dropdead gorgeous; it’s spacious, comfortable and refined. Second, it’s an honest car; it’s an easy and fun-to-drive practical family Sports Coupe that doesn’t pretend to be seeking to mix with the hard core GTi brigade.

I personally call it the Kia ‘Eureka’, not just because its real name is a bit of a mouthful, but because Kia have definitely hit the sweet spot with this car; it is good value at £19,995 on the road, including every accessory the world cares to name bar sat nav. We attended the international launch of this car; normally at such events the manufacturers bend your ear for ages about how the tech spec of their new ‘Whatever GT’ beats the competition left, right and centre. Not so Kia – they just gave us the keys and sent us out on a test drive route to die for, and we all came back raving about the masterly way the car handled it.

The Kia Pro_Cee’d GT is not meant to be a serious road burner, but it will hold its own to a high level of safety at any level of ride and handling challenge on a public road with rules and speed limits. What’s more, while a couple of very expensive new cars we’ve recently been testing both broke down, I bet you the Kia Pro will start first time and run near-on trouble free for at least the whole of its seven-year full warranty period – I know which I’d choose.

Here’s the point – the Kia Pro_Cee’d GT’s fun, stylish, practical, roomy and economical. In fact, for this kind of package, it hardly has a drawback I care to mention, other than its name; according to its maker, ‘Pro’ designates it as the three-door version of the Kia Cee’d family – obvious! But whatever its name, it’s the best car from Kia yet, if you ask me.

The BMW M6 Gran Coupe Just as we are seeing a plethora of model Series and specifications from Audi, so we are seeing an increasing variation of models on a theme from BMW. No problem there – ‘choice’ is good for us as consumers, and helps sell cars for their makers. Everyone benefits. The new challenge to the manufacturer is in making them desirable, and BMW have certainly done that with this new BMW M6 Gran Coupe.

BMW are not expecting to sell this car in big numbers; it’s too specialist and too expensive for that (£97,700). Our test car was fitted with carbon ceramic brakes, special paint and interior finishes, soft close doors, sun protection glass and surround view – add £22,000 for that little lot. The thing is, most of its buyers will.

This is a big car and feels it, but you’ll need to adjust your head when climbing into the rear under the Gran Coupe’s sloping roof.

But once inside, back or front, it is super plush. From the driver’s seat it’s a combination of luxury, quality, and business-like precision with comprehensive and easy to use interior equipment and data. The head up speed display works a treat in keeping your eyes focused well ahead, especially in a car capable of warp speeds like this one.

Powered by the same engine as the M5, the M6 will rocket you to 62 mph in 4.2 secs and carry on ‘til the speed limiter says no more than 155 mph please. Yet the M6 is three cars in one – a big comfy

long distance autobahn burner; a regular luxury cruiser, or a burn-the-hell-out-of-everything-elseon-the-road bruiser. As with all current M cars, you can tune-up throttle response, steering and suspension and all those settings will be memorised via the M1/M2 buttons on the steering wheel. In fact, it’s intoxicating in M Mode, it sounds amazing, is unbelievably responsive, rides better and is ultimately more composed than the deservedly legendary BMW M5; and that takes some doing, as anyone who has driven or owned an M5 will tell you.

Toggle and twist various centre control switches and you can step up the ride and handling dynamics of the car. The result is more than just entertainment. You can maximise the change speed of the seven-speed gearbox to points of a second – that’s really track day stuff, yet I doubt we’ll see this car much in that territory. Adjusting steering feel on a fast challenging route is another matter – slightly firmed up, it helps you to place the car with more studied emotion and manage its size and weight better on the fast and twisties. In truth, it doesn’t get a lot better than this. This is the car for someone who wants super high performance wrapped in a state-of-the-art luxury saloon; the car Batman will buy when he retires.
