The content in this annual report covers July 1, 2013 to June 1, 2014. This report features stories about life in our Bergen Community College community – our faculty, staff, students, supporters and visitors. Since the College remains nothing without the members of its community, they played a central role in deciding this report’s design: in a design competition between the three Office of Public Relations graphic designers, respondents on social media, email and Bergen.edu weighed in on their favorite by casting votes. In the end, Wilson Aguilar’s cover won the competition and the rights for him to design this report. This report remains Wilson’s vision – and yours. Congratulations, Wilson – a member of our Bergen community for 33 years. We love hearing from our Bergen community. Email feedback to lhlavenka@bergen.edu.

What’s in a name? For us, everything. When the state legislature signed the County College Act of 1962, it set into motion the model for the 19 two-year schools that enroll 61 percent of all undergraduate college students in New Jersey today. By establishing high-quality, affordable and accessible local institutions of higher education, the legislature put the path to lifelong learning within reach of whomever sought it. For Bergen, and our sister institutions, we remain inspired by that vision and continue to embrace that responsibility. We are a community resource providing the foundation for a career – or a four-year degree; a partner with local employers delivering solutions to enhance our region’s economy; and a center of excellence creating cultural and civic initiatives that bring thousands of nonstudents to our locations each year. Inside this annual report, you’ll meet the residents of our Bergen community – the students, faculty, staff and local residents who made headlines in 2013-14. You’ll learn about their accomplishments and discover who – and what – makes this a community like no other. From the Meadowlands, to the Palisades; to the county seat and the Ramapo River, this is the report about the power of community. Your Bergen community. Our Bergen Community College. Sincerely,

Dr. B. Kaye Walter President

Many North Jersey colleges moving ahead on expansions backed by state bond By PATRICIA ALEX, Staff Writer, The Record

Area colleges and universities are champing at the bit as they await state allocations from a $750-million bond for construction approved by voters last fall. Bergen Community College on Tuesday held a ceremonial groundbreaking for its $26-million health professions building at the Paramus campus. Construction contracts also have been awarded for new science and business buildings at Montclair State University, and at William Paterson University in Wayne crews are clearing the site of

This is all before the state has released any money for the projects; it has signed off on the overall concepts of projects submitted by the schools but is still reviewing the details of the plans. The schools expect the dollars will begin to flow by winter, but some, such as Passaic County Community College, are holding off on proceeding until the money is released. Others, like BCC, are confident the money will be forthcoming: There, officials donned purple hardhats to shovel

PARAMUS — Boeing predicted this year that the aviation industry would need 1 million new commercial airline pilots and maintenance technicians worldwide over the next 20 years. At the same time, the Federal Aviation Administration increased the number of hours of required flight time to be hired as a commercial airline pilot from 250 to 1,500. That requirement is reduced to 1,000 hours with a bachelor's degree from a four-year aviation training program, and 1,250 hours with an associate's degree from a two-year college aviation program. "These are high-tech, high-paying jobs, and one of the benefits that colleges can now offer is that the FAA is

stipulating that if you do get an associate's degree in aviation, the number of hours that you need to get a job with the airlines will be decreased," Bill Klappert, a professor of aviation at Bergen Community College, said. The aviation program at Bergen Community College started in fall 2012. This year, the program gained a full-time professor and a chief pilot for the first time. Students can major in aviation administration or aircraft operations (also known as flying a plane). Some of the classes take place in the college's Emil Buehler Trust Aviation Center, which includes flight and helicopter simulators. Today's planes require a more tech-

Bergen Signs Study Abroad Pact By MYBERGEN.COM

Bergen Community College has joined a nationwide initiative to double the number of U.S. students studying abroad by 2019. More than 150 schools have signed the pledge spearheaded by the Institute of International Education’s (IIE) “Generation Study Abroad” program. “Study abroad is a transformational experience,” Amparo Codding, the College’s dean of arts, humanities and wellness – who coordinates the school’s study abroad program – said. “In addition to the academic accomplishments, students come back with a very strong sense of self. They come back with a whole new view of the world, wanting to travel more, learn more, see more and do more.” The U.S. Department of State’s Bu-
