The content in this annual report covers July 1, 2013 to June 1, 2014. This report features stories about life in our Bergen Community College community – our faculty, staff, students, supporters and visitors. Since the College remains nothing without the members of its community, they played a central role in deciding this report’s design: in a design competition between the three Office of Public Relations graphic designers, respondents on social media, email and Bergen.edu weighed in on their favorite by casting votes. In the end, Wilson Aguilar’s cover won the competition and the rights for him to design this report. This report remains Wilson’s vision – and yours. What’s in a name? For us, everything. When the state legislature signed the County College Act of 1962, it set into motion the model for the 19 two-year schools that enroll 61 percent of all undergraduate college students in New Jersey today. By establishing high-quality, affordable and accessible local institutions of higher education, the legislature put the path to lifelong learning within reach of whomever sought it. For Bergen, and our sister institutions, we remain inspired by that vision and continue to embrace that responsibility. We are a community resource providing the foundation for a career – or a four-year degree; a partner with local employers delivering solutions to enhance our region’s economy; and a center of excellence creating cultural and civic initiatives that bring thousands of nonstudents to our locations each year. In April, faculty, staff and students broke into groups to participate in day-long development and leadership activities. Speakers such as author Clifton Taulbert delivered the keynote addresses.

Middle States matters! The College began the multi-year process to obtain re-accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, which it completes once every decade. Middle States-appointed teams will visit in 2016 to evaluate the College’s compliance with the group’s 14 Standards of Excellence – measures of institutional quality and effectiveness.

Some came for the first time, others returned for the first time in a long time – either way, plenty of apples were polished for the first day of school.

Building a better Bergen doesn’t always mean brick and mortar. To that end, the College enhanced its digital presence with the launch of the redesigned Bergen.edu in January.

An August groundbreaking featuring College and county leaders like Dean of Health Professions Dr. Susan Barnard and Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Bill Mullaney paved the way for construction to begin on the $26 million Health Professions Integrated Teaching Center at the main campus. The building, financed in large part by the $750 million Building Our Future Bond Act approved by voters, will house the College’s health professions programs such as nursing and dental hygiene.

Bergen built a bridge between its main campus and Meadowlands locations with the launch of a free shuttle service in the fall. A three-year, $634,836 “Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Grant” secured by College and county officials laid the groundwork for the initiative.

Faculty members David Cohen and Robert Walljasper joined celebrity chefs Maneet Chauhan and Peter Kelly to recognize students Julissa Aragon and Cristina Garro, who participated in a cooking competition at the “Giants of Generosity” charity event.

With bio-diesel generators, solar panels and electric vehicles, Bergen’s STEM students continue to work on the cutting edge – they even produced a wind turbine that can produce 225 watts of electricity at 20 mile per hour winds.

small community within the school’s campus that he had not seen when he started attending. By forming the chapter, Wei said that it allowed him to form a tight-knit community and make an impact within the campus and throughout the state. After the NAACP chapter began to grow, Wei became the chapter’s president. The Bergen chapter was able to host various events such as voter registration drives, a voter education panel which included guest Sen. Barbara Buono. The chapter also hosted a workshop to help young minorities, as well as the Break the Bread event in Newark to feed and eat with the homeless. Wei has been the president of the Bergen chapter over the last two years

Bergen Signs Study Abroad Pact By MYBERGEN.COM

Bergen Community College has joined a nationwide initiative to double the number of U.S. students studying abroad by 2019. More than 150 schools have signed the pledge spearheaded by the Institute of International Education’s (IIE) “Generation Study Abroad” program. “Study abroad is a transformational experience,” Amparo Codding, the College’s dean of arts, humanities and wellness – who coordinates the school’s study abroad program – said. “In addition to the academic accomplishments, students come back with a very strong sense of self. They come back with a whole new view of the world, wanting to travel more, learn more, see more and do more.” The U.S. Department of State’s Bu-

But this year, Professor Chu made his own history when he won the 2013-14 National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development Excellence Award for teaching. The Bergen Community College Foundation distributed more than $214,000 to 170 students at the annual scholarship awards ceremony made possible by donors.

With bagels and bacon, the Office of Alumni Affairs – established during the last year – lured past grads to campus and recognized their place in the College’s history. Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Bill Mullaney spoke at the event.

For 29 years, the Bergen Community College Foundation Medallion Awards Dinner has served as a signature fundraising event for scholarships. Lawrence R. Inserra Jr., Inserra Supermarkets, Inc. president, received the 2013 Award for Merit for Corporate Responsibility and Philanthropy.

More than 30 faculty and staff worked with the grants office during the 2013-14 year to develop 16 grants and sponsored projects that received nearly $9 million in awards. These included initiatives as the Title V Institutional Capacity Building and the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Development project. Collaborative projects included inmate education with the Bergen County Sherriff’s Office, Garden State Pathways to Success with Camden County College and the Health Professions Opportunity Program with 10 community college partners, county workforce investment boards and numerous healthcare industry employers.

Bergen Community College on Tuesday held a ceremonial groundbreaking for its $26-million health professions building at the Paramus campus. Construction contracts also have been awarded for new science and business buildings at Montclair State University, and at William Paterson University in Wayne crews are clearing the site of

PARAMUS — Boeing predicted this year that the aviation industry would need 1 million new commercial airline pilots and maintenance technicians worldwide over the next 20 years. At the same time, the Federal Aviation Administration increased the number of hours of required flight time to be hired as a commercial airline pilot from 250 to 1,500. That requirement is reduced to 1,000 hours with a bachelor's degree from a four-year aviation training program, and 1,250 hours with an associate's degree from a two-year college aviation program. "These are high-tech, high-paying jobs, and one of the benefits that colleges can now offer is that the FAA is

The Fairleigh Dickinson University and Bergen Community College Scholars Program (BCC-FDU Scholars Program) was signed into action Wednesday at noon. “This is going to be terrific,” FDU President Sheldon Drucker said at a press conference. “We’ll be able to provide a very affordable education to the students of Bergen County.
