NOTE FROM PROGRAM STAFF Greetings Students! Thank you for your continued interest in the Institute for Learning in Retirement (ILR) and we hope you’ll join us for the Fall 2020 semester! This semester we’ll explore rich, academic and cultural topics together online.

Courses will continue to be facilitated by dedicated volunteer instructors who are passionate about the content they share with you.

If you have trouble logging in, please contact our office at ilr@bergen.edu The Semester Membership fee is $125.00 New for this semester’s online experiences, your membership fee entitles you to choose up to 6 courses.

Course Dates The ILR is in session on days that the College as a whole is open. Some of these days are holidays. Please check your calendars for holidays, family events, and conflicts in your schedule before choosing your courses each semester. Once your course dates are set, it is difficult to change them. Please use your best discretion when selecting your courses.

MONDAY Course Offerings Modern French Painting: From Matisse to the 21 st Century IR - 846 Let’s examine contemporary French painting, beginning with the influence of Cezanne and discussing the works of significant modern artists like Matisse, Picasso, the Cubists, Chagall, Nikki de St. Phalle, Yves Klein, Christo, among others. Mondays: October 5,12,19,26 Time: 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. Instructor: Ronnie Friedman *Traditional Chinese Culture & Shen Yun IR - 741 Come on an inspiring journey to capture the essence of traditional Chinese culture. Learn about the beliefs that are the foundation of various cultural forms, including dance, music, martial arts, and education. Monday: December 7, Friday December 11 Time: 10:00 - 11:30 a.m. Instructor: Teresa Shen New York City & Immigration IR - 875 We will read and discuss five novels about the immigrant experience in NYC written by immigrants. How did generations handle the changes, and the impact of the city upon their families? Please read: Bread Givers by Anzia Yezierska for the first class . Mondays: October 5, 12, 19, 26 Time: 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. Instructor: Emily Ginder Selected Topics in American History IR - 876 Come and investigate influential periods, personalities and events in American history. Subjects will include: Robert Bork and the Decline in Civility in American Politics, The Revolutionary War in Bergen County and more! TUESDAY Course Offerings The 101 Most Influential People Who Never Lived IR - 436 Some fictional characters have helped to start wars (Uncle Tom), teach moral lessons (Scrooge), change our attitudes (Amos 'n' Andy), or form our prejudices (Mammy). Some take us along on adventures (Buck Rogers); others bare their souls (Holden Caulfield). Who are the characters that have affected us, and what have they done to change society? Tuesdays: October 6, 13, 20, 27, November 3 Time: 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. Instructor: Dan Karlan Organizing Your DNA Matches Workshop IR - 849 Organize your DNA matches using the Leeds Method. Experience using spreadsheets is helpful. Prerequisite: Putting Genes in Your Genealogy class or equivalent experience. (course is not for DNA newbies.) Instructor credentials = Genealogical Society of Bergen County Tuesdays: November 17, December 1 Time: 12:30 - 2:30 p.m. Instructor: Fred Voss Putting Genes in Your Genealogy IR - 727 People are using DNA testing as part of their genealogical research. This course focuses on the basics; why use DNA treatment, which tests and companies to use, and interpreting results. Prerequisites: Familiarity with basic genealogy and comfortable navigating websites. Current Topics in the Environment IR - 521 Come discuss current topics dealing with the environmental issues such as energy, pollution, climate change, sustainability, and more! Tuesdays: October 6, 13, 20, 27 Time: 2:30 - 3:30 p.m. Instructor: Robert Dill French Art before Impressionism IR - 627 Explore the lives, and the paintings of French artists from the 18th century up to the Impressionist Exhibition of 1874 in Paris. Artists we’ll study include Chardin, Delacroix and Courbet. Tuesdays: October 6, 13, 20, 27, November 3 Time: 10:00 - 11:15 a.m. Instructor: Sandra Martin The Air Force in World War II –Stories of Escape, Survival and Winning the War IR - 580 Learn about the B-17 bomber and P-51 Mustang fighter military aircraft of World War II, plus two escape stories, and one of survival. Hear a second-hand account of how Lt. Louis Feingold escaped capture after his B-17 was shot down over occupied France. Feingold’s story is told by his son. WEDNESDAY Course Offerings Financial Planning in Retirement IR - 853 Retirement is often looked as a ‘finish line.’ In reality, it is a new phase in your financial life. What will be my medical expenses? Who will make decisions on my behalf if I have diminished financial capacity? This course will help navigate the uncertainty of retirement. ILR (INSTITUTE FOR LEARNING IN RETIREMENT) FALL 2020 Road Trip to Vitality IR - 870 Pack your bags & leave what you have learned about growing old behind! Drawing from Ancient Healing Practices and cuttingedge science, we’ll explore a variety of practices to stimulate the mind, ignite the spirit & revitalize the body. This class will involve some physical movement; all levels welcome! Students should use a sturdy chair, wear flat shoes and comfortable clothes and have a notebook and writing implement. Wednesdays: October 7, 14, 21, 28, November 4, 11, 18, December 2, Time: 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. Instructors: Toni Chianetta Introduction of Falun Dafa - An Ancient Chinese Mind and Body Practice IR - 740 Falun Dafa (also known as Falun Gong) is a powerful mind and body practice revealed to the public in 1992 and spread to 100+ countries. Learn about the "adult" wonders at Disney including non-ride entertainment like free, live shows! If you already know basic French vocabulary and grammar, use it to give and get information! Classes are conducted mostly in French, where students are encouraged to ask questions and express their ideas as they practice the language. Suspension of Disbelief IR-871 We’ll explore films that ask you to "suspend disbelief" and see what could never be possible in the real world. THURSDAY Course Offerings Neurology 101 IR - 702 For Non-Neurologists, we will cover: Dementia, Stroke, Fainting, Vestibular Disorders and Back Pain. Plus discussions of basic anatomy and physiology related to individual disorders. No medical background required. Thursdays: October 29, November 5, December 12, 19 Time: 2:00 - 3:30 p.m. Instructors: Judith Lustig, MD Leonardo da Vinci: the Artist as Genius IR - 456 Let’s examine Leonardo’s career from his early training in Florence to his death in France. We’ll consider some of the challenging aspects of his oeuvre, from incomplete works to problematic attributions. Retiree’s Guide to Financial Fitness IR - 393 The value of good advice is more important than ever. Discuss how investment fees (often substantially!) can impact your returns, and much more. IR-878 Hop aboard as we explore the countryside, villages, sights and sites across 31 countries including stops in Europe, Scandinavia, the Middle East, Indo China plus the U.S. Photographs, many selected by Travel & Leisure, will remind the well-travelled of places they have visited and may entice others to plan a visit! Healing the Heart: IR - 888 Coping with Loss On your journey of grief, or loss, you don’t have to travel alone! Join this support group-style class. We’ll talk about understanding grief, and it’s impacts on us, plus going onward into a “new normal” of our lives. This course is not religious in nature.
