Letter from the Vice President of Student Affairs Dear Bergen Family: The 2015-16 academic year was yet another banner year for the Division of Student Affairs! Below are some of our collective accomplishments: •

• • • •

Commencement 2016 marked another monumental milestone; the largest graduating class in the history of Bergen Community College and the largest of any New Jersey community college for its third consecutive year. For the second time in a row, over $2.3 million dollars were awarded by the U.S. Department of Education to the Turning Points Program, under the Transition and Postsecondary Programs for Students with Intellectual Disabilities (TPDSID) grant. Community College Futures Assembly recognized Project Graduation, which became a 2016 Bellwether Award finalist under the Planning, Governance and Finance category. Project Graduation was recognized by the College community and by The League for Innovation in the Community College by awarding Project Graduation the Innovation of the Year Award. 158 students participated in athletics, two awarded with the NJCAA Pinnacle Award for Academic Excellence, while 41-percent received All-Conference Academic certificates. Another partnership was forged to specifically assist our student veterans continue to a four-year educational institution in an online setting at Bellevue University.

Although our work is not over and there is much that needs to be done, these and many other accomplishments are a true testament of the partnership that Student Affairs has with Academic Affairs, our students, and the community. Our commitment is clear—equity and student success are at the foundation of all we do in Student Affairs. We are Student Affairs at Bergen!

members who helped guide and shape all of this year’s ATD efforts. This year, our Bergen ATD journey revolved around our main goal – the creation of our Bergen ATD Student Success Implementation Plan, which was submitted in April 2016. The plan serves as our roadmap for the next three years and highlights the following two campus priorities: Priority 1: Develop a Comprehensive Roadmap for Student Success Priority 2: Enhance Academic Programs and Pedagogy for Student Success

Bergen Community College’s active participation in the Achieving the Dream (ATD) National Reform Network was marked by the College’s participation in the 2015 ATD Kickoff Institute, which was held from June 23-25, 2015, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Nine participants attended, including executive team members, faculty and staff. Broad campus involvement and engagement are central to Bergen’s ATD and student success work. The College’s 2015-2016 Core, Data, and Communications Teams include students, faculty, staff, executive team members and community

The submission of our plan marked the culmination of eight months of intensive self-study and reflection, which included engaging in a campus-wide Appreciative Inquiry qualitative data collection process, collecting and analyzing a wide range of quantitative and qualitative campus data, and many hours of dialogue about how to help our Bergen students succeed. We are proud to highlight the following accomplishments:

College-Wide Engagement • Collaboration 55 ATD College Team members • Research 567 campus-wide paired interviews • Development Days Fall - 555 attended Spring - 545 attended

• Network 13 College members attended the DREAM 2016 National Conference in Atlanta, Georgia • Learn 9 campus webinars hosted • Interaction 2 cross-campus ATD Reading Groups sponsored

• Student Success 77 new initiatives

Persistence New OSS students Fall 2014 to Spring 2015: 87.3% Fall 2015 to Spring 2016: 87.3%

The Office of Specialized Services (OSS) is the central location for coordinating appropriate academic accommodations for the College’s eligible students. Our staff is dedicated to providing information and resources to assist students in achieving their academic and professional goals while attending Bergen. As the enrollment of students with disabilities continues to increase each year, so does the concern related to the persistence, retention and graduation rates. Dedicating resources that support equal access and the opportunity to fully participate can make a significant difference in the lives of students and in their ability to succeed.

OSS staff members seek to offer all students an equal opportunity for success in their chosen field of study. Graduation data from December 2015 to May 2016 included 103 students who met the requirements for graduation, with two students receiving an overall cumulative GPA of 4.0. The breakdown for this cohort is as follows: Good Academic Standing: 72 (70%) Dean’s List: 23 (22%) Honors: 8 (8%)

Center for Food Action (CFA) Who Does CFA Help at Bergen? Rachel is a full time student receiving academic scholarships. Rachel and her disabled mother are living in a motel, since they were evicted from their home a few months ago. Laid off from her job, Rachel’s unemployment benefits expired. Her mother gets social security disability, but they always need food assistance by the end of the month. Rachel comes to the pantry regularly for help. Veronica was laid off after several years working full-time at a bank. After receiving two surgeries, she now owes thousands in medical bills. Her unemployment benefits are not enough for her to afford rent, utilities and pay off medical bills. She often struggles to buy food. Veronica sought help from CFA at the College when she decided to return to school and pursue a degree. Angela was going through a bad divorce and came back to college to rebuild her life. She has two sons and often struggled with money to buy food. Visits to CFA’s pantry helped make ends meet for Veronica and her family, saying that the help she received from CFA was a “lifesaver” while completing her studies. She graduated May 2016 with a degree in nursing.

Office of Financial Aid

Office of Financial Aid We are excited about the changes that have taken place within the Office of Financial Aid, especially when we see our students’ lives impacted through the education they are able to receive in part due to the financial assistance provided to them. During the 2015-16 academic year, the Office of Financial Aid: •

Processed approximately 15,275 FAFSA applications • Awarded aid to 9,778 students • Reviewed and verified 3,054 student records An approximate total of $44,708,900 was processed in the form of federal, institutional and state aid.

For the first time, in collaboration with the NJ Higher Education Student Assistance Authority five FAFSA workshops were held to assist prospective students complete their application for financial aid. To keep the momentum alive, in 2016 we will: Launch a soft opening of the Center for Financial Literacy to educate students on financial management. Provide a Self-Service Financial Aid module, which will allow students the opportunity to view their financial status.

We have implemented the following improvements to better serve our students and to reach our target goal of being 100-percent paperless, which is well within reach. • An additional scanner was purchased to increase access for more students to scan their documents at any given time. Once scanned, documents are automatically uploaded in the system thus allowing for a turnaround time of less than 24 hours for the verification of financial records— thus accelerating financial aid packaging. • Photos of documents can also be uploaded by students, which get uploaded to our imaging system. • Dynamic forms are now available and can be signed and submitted electronically.

Student Success and Completion

This academic year, the area of Student Success and Completion launched three new initiatives to support the goals of Project Graduation: Success Ambassadors are a network of faculty and staff volunteers from across the campus. Each Ambassador becomes the “go-to” peer for five students entering their second semester at Bergen. Through phone calls, strategically timed emails and relationship building, Ambassadors provide guidance to the students for their caseload; assisting them in navigating the administrative side of college life (e.g., financial aid, registration, tuition payments), understanding the procedural elements (e.g., withdrawing from a course, grade appeals, making a tutor appointment) and emphasizing the importance of making social connections on campus. The Bergen Community College Parent and Family Network (BCCPFN) provides direction and support to the parents and families of Bergen students to learn about the programs and campus resources offered at the College to support student success, including how to finance their student’s education and how they can play a key role in providing support and ongoing encouragement at home. Through BCCPFN newsletter and ongoing workshops, parents and families will understand the college culture of Bergen and the many opportunities that are available for both students and their families. Bergen’s Majors Fair provided academic areas a chance to showcase their departments, and for students, the opportunity to learn about dozens programs in one afternoon. Academic departments provided information regarding career trends, education requirements and transferring to four-year schools after graduation.

Athletic Department

The Bergen Community College Athletic Program had an outstanding year both on the courts, fields, and mats, but most importantly, also in the classroom. Six Bulldog athletic teams went to National Championship Tournaments and Meets: • Men’s and Women’s Cross Country • Men’s Soccer • Wrestling • Men’s and Women’s Track and Field

• 31-percent of our student-athletes received All-Region Academic certificates. • Three Bergen teams were nominated for All-Academic Team. • 18 student-athletes were nominated for NJCAA All-Academic Student-Athlete Awards. Two of those student-athletes earned a perfect 4.0 GPA and will be receiving the NJCAA Pinnacle Award for Academic Excellence.

On the field and court, the athletic teams excelled. We’ve made history at Bergen! • Men’s Cross Country team won the Region Championship and the Conference Championship for the first time since 1981. • Men’s Soccer won the 2015 Region XIX Championship for the first time in the College’s history. • Garrett Pynn won the NJCAA DIII Championship in the Discus and Malik Stewart earned an AllAmerican recognition in Men’s Soccer. • We were able to field a competitive Women’s Cross Country and Track team for the first time in over 20 years.

Goal 2: Improve our recruiting. • A newly designed website, www.bergenbulldogs.com, now provides many additional tools to recruit and communicate with prospective student-athletes and high school coaches. The website includes information and a recruitment questionnaire.

Goal 1: Continue to improve our teams academically. Through student-advising, study halls, priority registration, Student-Athlete Orientations and class scheduling we achieved: • 41-percent of our student-athletes received AllConference Academic certificates.

Goal 3: Improve in the administration of the Athletics Department. • A full-time Coordinator of Athletics and Equipment Manager and two part-time new Athletic Trainers were added.

Bergen Community College at the Meadowlands Office of Student Affairs 2015, we announced our first graduating class under the Paramedic Science program.

Qnomy With the implementation of the virtual queuing system in 2014, students have conveniently inquired about support services with ease—and without the hassle of waiting in lines. The chart below depicts the growth in student utilization of Qnomy at the College’s Lyndhurst location. Between the 2014-15 and 2015-16 academic years, student support services have increased by 46-percent in financial aid and 36percent in registration. The last phase was recently rolled out, which allows students to be queued-in for academic counseling and advising, and has resulted in a 42-percent increase in services. Accuplacer Testing The Office of Student Affairs and Testing Center have collaborated and administered a series of Accuplacer testing for newly admitted students enrolling each September in Fall 2 and Fall 3 terms. More than 300 students were tested and provided with academic advisement, registration services, financial aid resources and student portal instruction. Degree Programs Bergen Community College at the Meadowlands offers a selection of degree programs available at 100percent completion (e.g., Liberal Arts, Mathematics/Science, Criminal Justice, Paramedic Science and Professional Studies). In 2014, the Health Profession career track of the Paramedic Science program first launched at the Meadowlands. This intensive program offers high technology classroom instruction, skills laboratory instruction, medical simulation and comprehensive debriefings. In August

Student Workshops A series of student workshops have been offered at Lyndhurst with particular focus in areas of: Coping with Stress and Anxiety and Relationship Building. The outcome of attendance was positive, which resulted in additional sessions in other areas such as Transfer 101 series, Resume Writing, Interviewing Skills and Study Abroad sessions all administered by our professional counseling staff. Open House October 2015 proved to be a success for many parents and students visiting the College’s Lyndhurst location during the annual Open House event. Students and families were presented with a variety of degree options and opportunities, informational packet and schedule of campus tours and information sessions in order to make the enrollment experience invaluable. Faculty and Staff from the Business Department, Math and Natural Science, Paramedic Science, Criminal Justice, Liberal Arts, Honors Programs, Student Life, Admissions, Financial Aid, Educational Opportunity Fund, Academic Advising/Counseling, Career Services and student club ambassadors networked with prospective students and showcased their programs and services.
