The Monsters of Switzerland

783038 690269

Dragon from Lucerne

Glaciero

When not breathing fire, it looks more like a flying crocodile than a dragon.

Freezes everything and everyone in its way. Critically endangered. And very lonely.

Barbegazi

Inhabits snowy mountains, and skis on its enormous feet. Has so much fun in the winter that it needs to sleep all summer.

CHF 29.80 / EUR 29.80 72 pages, hardcover 270 mm x 370 mm Publication date: June 2018

Vogel Gryff

Half eagle and half lion. Every winter can be spotted floating down the Rhine through Basel, dancing on a raft.

The next morning, the villagers woke and, to their surprise and delight, they saw a solid stone bridge arching over the wild river as the foaming waters churned below. Their rejoicing was soon cut short when they saw the devil, with piercing, green eyes, waiting at the far end of the bridge waiting for his reward.

Schmutzli

Santa’s side-kick , who threatens naughty children with a trip to the forest to peel carrots until they are ready to behave.

Tunnahux

Rock-crusher, whose favorite snack is solid granite. Has always inspired the Swiss to do the unthinkable – tunnel through mountains!

“Fiddle-dee-dee,” exclaimed Oma and she shook her finger at him. “Just what do you think you are doing with that heavy stone?” “Get out of my way, old lady, or I’ll toss you in the river.”

By the time the Elder returned to the village, it was almost evening. He announced that the devil had agreed to build the bridge in return for the soul of the first creature to cross it. The villagers grumbled a bit, wondering what good a bridge would be if no one wanted to be the first to cross it. But the Elder, feeling quite cocky, assured them that he had a plan.

But the old woman didn’t move. “I’m far too old to be afraid of anything–least of all a silly creature like you!” The devil, quite astonished, looked up to see all the villagers gathered watching him. Then he lifted the stone high above his head.“ Get out of my way,” he said. The villagers called for Oma to run, but all she said was, “Oh, fiddle-dee-dee.”

Elves

Little creatures that come at night to help with chores. Don’t forget to leave a bowl of cream or a plate of pork to thank them. They can get quite nasty if they feel offended. The Inoxis have a tool for any problem, but be careful: they are known for causing more problems than they solve.

Suddenly the stone seemed much heavier than before. The devil staggered, and then dropped the stone on his foot. He screamed in pain and started to hop about holding one foot in his hands.

Tschäggättä

Inoxis

Scary-looking ghosts with wooden faces.

Battle Rattler Soldiers who run from battle field to battle field. If no one wants to fight, they’ll just battle themselves. They are fast but stupid.

One-eyed Jabberer

Speaks mostly only naughty words – in four different languages!

Basilisk

Ancient dragon with a rooster ’s head. Very bad breath and a steely stare.

The Elder, who was now feeling much more courageous, yelled across to the devil “You have done your job well.” The devil nodded his head and smiled maliciously. The Elder called back “I’m sending over your reward!” and he untied a large billy-goat, which, when it spotted the devil on the other side of the bridge, rushed over, its head bowed and horns ready to strik e.

The devil covered his ears for no sound was more painful to him than the sound of children laughing. With a great leap, he scrambled back up the mountain to his cave, never to return to the valley that had humiliated him.

Böög

Winter ’s monster of cold and death. By April, the people in Zürich are so sick of it, they blow it up. Good riddance.

Tatzelwurm

A serpent with a cat’s head and paws. Lives on farm animals. So rarely seen that many believe it has gone extinct.

Schnabelgeiss

Silly-looking ghosts who think they can scare people.

Inventor Nocturnal and shy – from time to time it gets a smart idea.

4

Just then a little round figure stepped out of the crowd of villagers and started to cross the bridge.

Kobold

Like their cousins the elves, they must be respected – especially the ones who work deep underground in the mines.

Chocopotamus

The reason chocolate disappears so quickly.

5

A roar of laughter erupted from across the bridge. The devil tried to pick up the stone again, but all he could do was roll it along the ground. It tumbled back into the river with a great splash. Now everyone was laughing, even the little children.

The devil got hopping mad when he realized he had been deceived. He grabbed the goat and tore him to shreds, throwing him over into the river below. The villagers all laughed, thinking they had fooled the devil so well. They ran to be the second to cross the bridge. But this only made the devil angrier. He jumped down into the gorge where huge boulders lay. He grabbed one of the largest ones, heaving the huge rock onto his shoulder, and struggling under its weight, he started up again. The villagers stopped in the middle of the new bridge and stared down at the devil wondering what he was up to.

32

“I’ll teach you not to fool with the devil!” he yelled. “Say goodbye to your pretty bridge.” The villagers all turned and ran off the bridge again thinking the devil was about to destroy it with his boulder. Now it was a big boulder, even for the devil, and when he reached the bridge again, he was forced to stop and catch his breath. He put the rock down and sat on it as he glared up at the villagers gathered on the far side of the bridge.

And who was the second to cross that bridge? The whole way, Oma muttered “Fiddle-dee-dee. Be bold but not foolish.” In the middle of the wrinkles on her face, there appeared a little smile–which perfectly matched the twinkle in her eyes. And all that remains now of Oma and the devil is that ancient bridge, which locals call the “Devil’s Bridge,” and in the valley below, that stone he couldn’t lift, which is called the “Devil’s Stone.”

Born in Canada to a Swiss mother, Andie Pilot’s earliest memories of Switzerland are from her Bernese grandmother’s kitchen. After she trained as a pastry chef in Canada and moved to Bern, she started the website Helvetic Kitchen with a simple goal: to share her love of simple Swiss cooking with her friends in Switzerland and around the globe. This adorable little book features Andie’s favorite recipes—some just like her grandmother made and some modern takes on Swiss classics—as well as Andie’s illumination of many of Swiss cuisine’s curiosities.
