50 Amazing Swiss Women – teacher resource pack

TEACHING RESOURCE 50 AMAZING SWISS WOMEN 1. AMAZING ME (simple: age 8+) 1. Introduction 2. Interviewing the classmates/ teacher 3. Sharing and discussing 1. ‘Amazingness’ is a quality that we all have access to. Throughout the 50 Amazing Swiss Women book we encounter women that show us that being amazing is not necessarily achieving great things, but rather working towards something you believe in and overcoming adversity along the way. Take Emilie Gourd (p. 77) as an example: she tirelessly and passionately worked towards a goal for 36 years: to get Swiss women the right to vote. She never achieved that goal, but it was her perseverance, her passion for the cause and her unshakeable belief that ultimately, she and her fellow fighters would succeed, that made her an amazing person. Another example would be Abassia Rahmani (p. 13) whose dream of becoming a flight attendant was swiftly cut by an illness. Her disability stopped her dream from becoming true, but Abassia, instead of giving up, found another passion for herself: blade running. 2. With these examples in mind, interview one of your classmates to find out about a time they were scared and did something brave; a difficulty they have/ had to overcome; a passion they are pursuing and working hard at. 3. Discuss and share. What do you admire about your classmate? And what is it that makes a person amazing?

2. AMAZING ME – EXTENDED ACTIVITY (extended activity with home learning: age 11+) 1. Introduction 2. Independent research /interviewing 3. Presentation /discussion in class 1. Introduction: Read ‘Marie Grosholtz’, ‘Emilie Gourd’ and ‘Abassia Rahmani’ from the 50 Amazing Swiss Women book and discuss: -What makes these women amazing? Is it their overcoming obstacles? Their creativity in finding solutions to problems? Is it their achieving a goal, or working towards a goal that made/makes them extraordinary? What even is ‘amazingness’? 2.a) Research (home learning): find a woman from history you admire and would like to write/talk about. Research that person, write down key dates and events in their life; What made this woman amazing in your eyes? If you could meet up with this person, a. where would you meet up, and b. what would you want to ask them? 2.b) Interview your grandmother or an elderly female relative or friend: Find out their date of birth; what life was like for them when they were your age; What they dreamed of becoming when they were a child; What obstacles they faced. What do you admire about this person? 3. Share and discuss in class (presentation/ written essay/ open discussion). Is there something all the women you have researched / interviewed have in common?

Dream Job Classroom Activity 1. Reading and introduction 2. Writing/answering questions 3. Sharing Reading and Introduction Read the chapter on Angela Ziltener. When Angela Ziltener was eleven, her teacher asked her, “Where do you see yourself when you are grown-up?” Angela had a very clear idea of what she wanted to do as an adult. Not everyone knows exactly what they want to do when they grow up. Some people need to think about it a little bit longer, or to try out different things to work out what they really like (or don’t like!) doing. Writing/Answering Questions So where do you see yourself when you are grown up? You can write about a dream job of yours, or you can invent something if you don’t have a dream job in mind. Imagine a day in your life at age 40: - Where are you living? - What kind of job do you have? What do you do at this job? - What kinds of things/studies/training did you have to do in order to get this job? - What might stand in your way doing to that job? What kind of difficulty might you be facing in your job? - What would you like most about this job and why?

Sharing Share with the class and discuss. Have your classmates listed jobs that you never heard of? Is there anything someone talked about that might interest you as well?

Reading Response Activity: General Questions for Any Chapter Who is this chapter about? When was she born? What was a difficulty that she faced? What makes this woman “amazing”? Do you like the illustration? Why or why not?
