FUNCTION

Shopping Mall and Kindergarten

OBJECTIVE:

An isolated object enhancing the character of the site. The grandi magazzini acts as an autonomous building instead of completing the urban context. The top floor acts as a kindergarten, highlighting the hybrid concept. The kindergarten is accessible through a different entrance and is isolated from the grandi magazzini by a separate circulation system.

A multi-functional complex on Ijburg island, Amsterdam

The aim of the project is to help the site bring out its characteristics and transform it into a kind of ‘playscape’, by creating a positive impact on the island in a wider scale. The idea is based on two different systems: the playground; space of forced/artificial nature and freedom, and the spatial apparatus that contributes to the built environment and works as a paradox to the free space in order to strengthen its qualities by creating a contradiction. Just like the attempts of VanEyck to turn the cities into playgrounds in the 1950s, the plotpersists to remain as a natural playground. Using the emptiness as a design principle, the site creates a degraded scenery from the strict border of the marina that represents the urbanism, to the natural border that represents freedom. This gradient system will inhabit the dwellings on the concrete border of the marina, where a piazza is created by the surrounding urban context; whereas the Architecture degrades towards the natural coast on the other side. Each of the proposed residential flats is oriented in a way that they face on both the urban and the natural coast in order to inhabit the context of ‘duality’ for the users. Interior spaces follow the concept and host the private spaces towards the façade facing the natural coast; while all the service spaces face towards the urban context with the marina. The colours of the drawings are the representation to emphasize the duality of the project and provide better conceptual understanding of the project.

Environmental and landscape rehabilitation in Porto di Mare

The complex creates a connection between the city and the countryside within its masterplan. Using the existing situation of the plot, a main “leisure” area in the north-east and an agricultural area in the south-west is created. The connection line expresses both the conceptual and the physical connection between the two ends. It is then used to give importance to the green on one side and to the water on the other and is expressed architecturally through an orange path followed in parallel with a path of water along the landscape. The sustainability in terms of water is achieved through a method of phyto-remediation, in which the rain water is collected by the pools; depurated by the plants and a series of “natural” pools are created. The purified water is then used to irrigate the park and the agricultural fields through the canals placed in between each agricultural field. In this proposed Sports Complex, sports facilities and agriculture work together and create a connection between the city and the countryside. Ecology, sustainability and low energy income are provided with a solar panel system above the iconic roofs of the main Aquatic Center building, carefully inclined and oriented according to the sun position.

Improving the environmental and rehabilitation with sports equipment requalification and completion of an existing non-profit sports complex, with the addition of Olmpic swimming pool, organization of sports fields, introducing new green area and agriculture fields to be connected to the city through the means of water.

Cargo-Pack Student House: Modular Design For The Future Flight Industry

In a more and more globalizing world, the living space is becoming smaller and harder to find each day and new ideas of housing are needed for the changing society. Every educational capital, such as Milan and Ankara, experience a growth in the number of foreign students and fail to provide sufficient affordable housing. This is caused by many factors, two of which can be stated as limited places offered by university dormitories or student hotels and rising rents of these cities due to high demand. The aim of this project is to provide lightweight portable shelter; for students that study abroad and struggle to find affordable houses. The house is designed in a way that it can be loaded onto a cargo plane so that the student will be able to transport it to any city he desires to finish his studies, internship, exhange, etc. The house is constructed by aluminum and polypropylene honeycomb panels, and will have a final area of 8 m² which makes it very lightweight and easy to transport. The interior consist of a folding bed and desk, a kitchen and a bathroom including shower, which is very convenient for a single student. The common structure designed to host the houses will be using the lost spaces within the cities, close to the university campuses, such as outdoor car parks in the case of cities with a high use of cars. The structure allows the houses to form a student village above the cars and create not only shelter, but also social interaction between the students who are away from their homes. The end result creates a green student village, that can adapt to any context and constantly transform according to the coming and going students. The thesis aims to propose a new living concept that is inspired by Yona Friedman as well as Archigram and Metabolists.

The proposed FlyHome houses are designed to fit in a cargo plane in order to be transported. The modular houses will be loaded onto a cargo plane using an existing cargo loading technology that is currently used for freighter planes. With the developing technology, the planes are believed to use less and less energy that harms the environment, thus will provide even cheaper service compared to the existing companies such as Ryanair, Easyjet. This way, the housing problem, especially for students in big cities will be solved in an environmental and efficient way.

The 7 Train stations surrounding Milan are under transformation for urban regeneration projects. Some of the stations are dismissed and some of them are being narrowed down and there are ongoing projects for the excess spaces around the railway. The Universities can benefit from the regeneration of the dismissed land closest to them and use as a potential site for temporary student housings.

Skyscraper School in the recently re-developed Porta Nuova district in Milan

In response to the urban context of the Porta Nuova district in Milan, the project is a skyscraper with a main function of a school that contributes to the skyline of Milan. Using the verticality of the building, the spaces are distributed vertically by age groups. The first group of floors are dedicated to the kindergarten in order to provide direct access for parents and children. The middle group of floors include study spaces and classrooms for the middle school and the higher floors are for the high school. Libraries, study spaces and social spaces are created as flowing space in between these floors to provide interaction between the age groups. The top floors include optional accommodation space for students. Due to the building’s central location, the ground floor is designed to includes a cafe, lobby and a bookstore. The building’s design idea consists of two heavy concrete cores on each end that also act as the primary structure supporting the transparent, lightweight and flexible steel supported inner spaces. Each floor has a different plan designed for its particular function. Some floors are given double height and some have view of the upper/lower floor. The cantilevered cubic spaces outside the cores are given either complimentary functions to the floors or includes a more public function and open spaces. These extensions also provide green spaces that give the vertical building a more natural feature and the users a healthy atmosphere.

Cultural Hub for the Annual Derry/Londonderry Festival

Inspired by the Travelling Troupe of Giant Marrionnettes, the project is a fun factory building that acts as the starting point of the annual DerryFest. Located in the heart of a politically conflicted city, the project aims to bring together the wider society by including them in the manufacture of the DerryFest giant marionnettes as well as the dancers, musicians and designers of the festival. Collaborating with the existing cultural institutions, the building acts as a cultural hub that encourages everyone regardless of the conflicts to bring colour to the grey city of Northern Ireland. The main characteristic of the building is the roof design as it reflects the aim and function in an architectural way. It intends to change the atmosphere of the city into a fun place and aims to gather the people by providing them cultural opportunities that they can participate.

Factory for the annual DerryFest Cultural hub offering music and dance courses along with the manufacturing of giant marrionnettes.

PROJECT BRIEF:

A place for participatory democracy to flourish, enabling all sectors of society to engage and participate.

OBJECTIVE:

The development of social capital between citizens and the building of organisational capacity between public-private institutions, non-profit and their constituents.

Marble Pavilion in Vila Vicosa, PORTUGAL

Understanding the process of a live project through building a pavilion out of marble was an extensive opportunity and has been a very unique experience. The fascinating marble quarries around the project site in Etma Marble Factory broaden my perspectives about the specific material. The fact that the construction of the pavilion took place next to the marble factory, the information on marble was very accessable and helped me understand the whole processing of the material. The whole experience, to see a project from the design process to the live construction, was very valuable.
