It is with great pleasure that I address you as the Chair of the British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (BMCC) in this year’s annual report. It has been an incredible journey serving as the Chair during these changing times. Together, we have navigated the new normal, demonstrating our adaptability and resilience as an organisation.
In 2022, we embraced a purpose-driven playbook, understanding what our members valued most and developing tailored experiences to better serve them. Our commitment to meeting the evolving needs of our members and the broader business community has been the driving force propelling the Chamber towards greater heights.
Adaptability and focus quickly became our guiding principle as we swiftly responded to the changing needs of our members. With a progressive and forward-thinking mindset, we continuously seek new opportunities for growth and development, to remain relevant as a key partner in fostering UK-Malaysian trade.
One of our greatest achievements was the successful organisation of 44 events, demonstrating our commitment to adapt and accelerate. Through these events, we were delighted to reconnect in person, fostering stronger bonds and facilitating meaningful interactions that were diffcult to replicate in a virtual setting. Our events have proven to be a powerful platform for networking, knowledge sharing, and collaboration, further enhancing the value we offer to our members.
Among the highlights were our fagship events, including the much-anticipated return of the Business Excellence Awards after a two-year hiatus, and the introduction of physical activities to the Malaysia Climate Action Week for the frst time.
It is inevitable that sustainability remains a top priority on our agenda. We have actively advocated for climate action within local businesses in Malaysia, especially among our members. In pursuit of this goal, we signed two Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with the UN Global Compact Network Malaysia & Brunei (UNGCMYB) and the British Standards Institution (BSI) Malaysia. Through these partnerships, we aim to raise awareness and enhance the understanding of sustainability and climate action practices among businesses, ultimately contributing to a net-zero economy.
Besides, the BMCC sector committee and networks have continued to be an important platform for members in the same sector to meet and discuss key issues affecting their respective sectors. Our efforts remained steadfast in the Higher Education, Education (3-18 years), and Energy Committees as well as the Construction and Engineering Network, where we continued to engage with the relevant government stakeholders, bringing the voices of the business community within the Chamber to policymakers.
The Chamber also continued its efforts in Government Stakeholders’ engagements, some key highlights include roundtables with the Prime Minister’s Department (Economy) and Penang State Executive Councillors (EXCO) for Infrastructure and Transportation and most notably the success of the 23rd JPA-BMCC Management Development Programme.
To expand the Chamber’s footprint, we made our inaugural stamp in the Northern Region of Malaysia with a networking event in Penang. The event saw over 60 participants from various corporations and agencies building connections and exchanging insights with the Penang government state offcials, our distinguished Board members, and representatives from the British High Commissioner Kuala Lumpur.
I extend my deepest gratitude to the BMCC Board of Directors, the Executive Team led by Jennifer Lopez, and our members and sponsors for their unwavering support and dedication. Together, we have accomplished signifcant milestones in the face of constant change, and I am confdent that our collective efforts will continue to yield positive outcomes.
In closing, I would like to express my gratitude to the entire BMCC community for their resilience, determination, and unwavering spirit. The future holds immense potential, and I am honoured to serve as your Chairman during this exciting chapter in our Chamber’s history.
Dear members, partners, and friends,
This past year has been a signifcant one for us, as we strived to recover and rebuild after the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. We are pleased to report that despite the obstacles, the BMCC has remained resilient and focused on serving the needs of our members and the wider business community.
In 2022, we witnessed the return to some semblance of normalcy after two years of COVID-19 movement control orders. This marked a turning point for us, allowing us to refocus our efforts and work towards fostering stronger business ties between the United Kingdom and Malaysia. The recovery of our operations and the support we received from our members were instrumental in making this possible.
Throughout the year, the BMCC took signifcant strides in delivering value to our members through a variety of initiatives and activities. We organised a total of 44 events, ranging from business forums to networking sessions, all aimed at creating opportunities for collaboration and knowledge sharing. These events provided a platform for our members to connect, learn, and expand their business networks.
Among the highlights of 2022 were the BMCC Business Excellence Awards, a prestigious event that celebrated and recognised UK-Malaysia Business Excellence and Partnerships. The awards night brought together 450 distinguished guests, showcasing the outstanding achievements and contributions made by businesses in both countries. It was a testament to the resilience and innovative spirit of the UK-Malaysia business community.
Additionally, the BMCC collaborated with the Public Services Department of Malaysia for the 23rd JPA-BMCC
Management Development Programme, aimed at nurturing the leadership skills of senior government offcers. This partnership allowed us to contribute to the development of Malaysia’s public sector and strengthen ties between the UK and Malaysia.
Another signifcant event was the 2nd Malaysia Climate Action Week, centred around the theme “ACT Now! Adapt, Collaborate and Transcend.” This week-long initiative aimed to inspire companies to act against climate change and foster sustainable practices. Through various programmes and activities, we provided a platform for discussions, knowledge exchange, and collaboration in the pursuit of a greener future.
The BMCC also demonstrated its commitment to empowering women entrepreneurs through the Inspiring Women Entrepreneur Conference & Exhibition, organised in partnership with Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia. This event, attended by 150 participants, served as a catalyst for growth, providing valuable insights, resources, and networking opportunities for women in business.
Furthermore, we continued to foster international trade by hosting virtual trade missions from the UK. These missions facilitated connections and collaborations between British and Malaysian businesses, opening new avenues for growth and economic opportunities.
Lastly, we expanded our reach and presence with the inaugural networking event in Penang, a vibrant hub of economic activity. This event brought together professionals, entrepreneurs, and business leaders, strengthening the ties between the BMCC and the business community in Penang.
As we refect on the achievements of the past year, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to our members, partners, sponsors, and key stakeholders in the government agencies for their support and trust in the BMCC. I would also like to extend my appreciation to our Chairman, Mark Arthun; Deputy Chairs, Andrew Diamond, and Nik Tasha Nik Kamaruddin; fellow Board members; His Excellency Charles Hay MVO; and fellow colleagues from the High Commission, for their insights, expertise, and support. Your collective wisdom and guidance have shaped our decisions and contributed to the growth and success of the BMCC.
The work done throughout the year would also not have been possible if not for my dynamic BMCC Executive Offce team. It is through their unwavering support and commitment that we have been able to navigate these challenging times and emerge stronger.
Looking ahead, we remain committed to our mission of promoting bilateral trade, investment, and business collaboration between the UK and Malaysia. We will continue to adapt and innovate, striving to deliver even greater value and impact for our members and stakeholders.
I invite you all to join us on this journey as we forge ahead into a future flled with opportunities and growth. Together, we will build a stronger, more resilient business community that will thrive in the years to come.

The webinar served as a valuable opportunity for both local and foreign businesses to gain insights and understanding of IP enforcement in Malaysia.

Meeting with Director of Private Education Division (PED) of the Ministry of Education which was attended by BMCC member schools to discuss challenges faced by private international school members and encourage dialogue between the private education sector with the Ministry of Education in formulating policies for the education sector in Malaysia.
