To Our Cherished Members

After all that has transpired so far this year, 2019 now seems a distant memory. The arrival of a global pandemic has shaken the familiar order of work and living, creating a new normal. As with countless other organisations, the BMCC had to put on hold numerous plans intended for 2020. Throughout the nationwide Movement Control Order (MCO) however, the BMCC remained active remotely through a series of webinars, regular alerts and advocacy initiatives to keep our members engaged and informed. In this, the BMCC reinforced an adaptability and resilience that has stood true for nearly 60 years.

As we emerge from the MCO with the reopening of businesses, we reflect on a very successful 2019 for the Chamber that still sets the foundations for our plans to come. On behalf of the Board of Directors, we are pleased to present the BMCC’s Annual Report for the Financial Year ended 31 December 2019.

Having organised over 40 events both social and corporate with renowned organisations within our membership, we were also delighted to have engagement opportunities with various Ministries and Government-linked bodies. Some of our notable highlights follow below.

In Q1, we organised the Digital Innovation Conference with HSBC Malaysia, our first large scale and half-day initiative. Attended by the Minister of Communications and Multimedia and the Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry, the Conference brought together the likes of MDEC, AirAsia, IBM Malaysia and TM Research & Development amongst numerous others to speak on how the technologies of today and tomorrow will influence our personal and professional lives. We were then pleased to conclude the year with a second successful conference in December, namely the SME Conference 2019 with Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia. Delivering the keynote was the Minister of Entrepreneur Development, who then paved the way for an extensive line of speakers from Credit Guarantee Corporation Malaysia Berhad, MaGIC and SME Corporation Malaysia, to name just a few.

The highly anticipated sequel to our inaugural Business Excellence Awards was greatly received by all attendees, nominees and winners. We shared the pride of the night with our 2019 winners PwC Malaysia, Capital DK, Teach for Malaysia, Sunway Medical Centre and honorary awardee Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah for all their tremendous contributions to trade and industry. YB Tuan Lim Guan Eng, then-Minister of Finance of Malaysia was our guest of honour delivering a speech and presenting the night’s grand prize, the UK-Malaysia Business of the Year award to Sports Direct MST Sdn Bhd.

In August, the BMCC launched the Women in Leadership Network, created to develop and deliver programmes that empower and advocate women in leadership. Some truly remarkable visionaries and champions of gender parity have enlisted since the Network’s formation, and the BMCC will look to continually grow this initiative in the years to come. We have also seen the relaunch of the BMCC Higher Education Committee, and the emergence of a new BMCC Education Committee (3 to 18 Years) to serve as platforms for dialogue and advocacy in the ever growing and so important education sector.

Another highlight of the year was the Trade Mission to Myanmar, our first delegation to an ASEAN country in recent history. With valuable connections made between our travelling members and local industry there, the BMCC will be seeking to expand our trade services by hosting more Trade Missions in the future.

The achievements of 2019 would not have been possible without the support of our Patrons, Board of Directors, our Sponsors and Partners, the British High Commission Kuala Lumpur and the Department for International Trade, our 51 Sterling members for the year and of course, our treasured members. Thank you all for an outstanding 2019, and let us now help each other in rebuilding our businesses and the global economy.
