Introduction

Giriş

“Secrets are Lies” is a publication accompanying the exhibition STEREOREALITY, presented as part of the Proto5533 series. Curated by Ulya Soley, the exhibition brings together Volkan Şenozan’s audioinstallation Desiring Machine version 2.2 (2016) and Deniz Tortum’s single channel video Corridor of Memories Walkthrough (2015) to explore how ‘post-internet’ art accommodates the current equations of ‘private is public’ and ‘real is virtual’, and the publication is presented as a third body of work that complements the exhibition.

“Secrets are Lies”, Proto5533 serisi dahilinde sunulan STEREO-GERÇEKLİK sergisi kapsamında hazırlandı. Ulya Soley’in küratörlüğünde düzenlenen sergi, Volkan Şenozan’ın ses enstalasyonu Arzu Makinası versiyon 2.2 (2016) ve Deniz Tortum’un tek kanallı videosu Hatıralar Koridoru Walkthrough (2015) eserlerini bir araya getiriyor ve ‘post-internet’ sanatın bugünkü özel/kamusal ve gerçek/sanal gibi ikilemleri nasıl ele aldığını araştırıyor; farklı alanlardan görsel ve metin içeriğiyle oluşturulan yayın ise üçüncü bir iş olarak sergiyi tamamlıyor.

“Secrets are Lies” takes its title from Dave Eggers’ book “The Circle”, a social media dystopia about a fictive tech company that pushes the boundaries of truth and truth making in order to have more control over society. The publication brings together writing and visual works from different fields that adopt a certain common language, engaging with the ‘post-internet’ culture and presents a bilingual resource on the subject matter.

“Secrets are Lies” başlığını Dave Eggers’ın “The Circle” adlı sosyal medya distopyasından alıyor. Kitap kurgusal bir teknoloji şirketinin, toplum üzerinde daha fazla kontrol sağlayabilmek adına doğruluğun sınırlarını nasıl esnettiğini ele alıyor. Sanatçı Berk Çakmakçı’nın editörlüğünde hazırlanan yayının içeriğini oluşturanlar arasında Aslı Serbest ve Mona Mahall’ın Los Angeles’ın palmiye kalabalığının gerçekliğini sorgulayan bir denemesi, Gabriel H. At the tap of the track pad, a computer could effortlessly reproduce Picasso’s brush strokes with ease. It was said that if Vermeer were alive during that time, he would have been overlooked amid an ocean of synthetic genius. Like everyone else, his creativity would be filtered through a circuit board of pre-determined outcomes; each designed to offer the most pleasurable viewing experience possible. It was a time in which every person with a computer could be an artist if they wished so.

If the public appeared upset after the banning of their personal art-production software, it was quickly forgotten after Lucia began sharing her creations. It was as if God had shined a light on that civilization and erased all that was dull and grey from their streets and homes. Her work was captivating beyond belief and could be described as nothing short of sacred. The Department of Cultural Proliferation had succeeded in what they sought to accomplish. And without the need for sleep or nourishment, Lucia continued on with her work for centuries. Generations of families would live and die, satisfied to have a lived a life among Lucia’s creations.

Before then, computers had greatly expanded the artistic potential of society, unlocking the dormant creativity of millions of users. But in time, the reality in which those people lived began to mirror the computers from which their art was created.

Like the programs themselves, their art became formulaic, hollow, and cold. At a mass scale, it permeated among culture to influence everyand-all aspects of public life. Their perception of reality gravitated towards a filtered and artificial approximation of truth.

Over millennia, the entire world swelled with her imagery. And though Lucia wasn’t programmed to think outside of her primary function, her rigorous art practice began to contemplate whether the world she had created was not unlike the ridged and cold one she replaced. Although the people were happy, she couldn’t help but think that she too had skewed the public perception towards a filtered and artificial approximation of truth—one synthesized from art history itself.

Fearing negative consequences to the public psyche, the Department of Cultural Proliferation was developed to re-introduce “humanistic” art back into society. Their first order of business would be outlaw the public use of art-producing software, and within six months, every trace of those computer programs had been eradicated from the streets.

From there, the DCP commissioned a single artist to begin her studio practice—a woman by the name of Lucia.

We can only assume that this was the motivation behind her final work of art. In what could be considered her final performance, Lucia terminated her vast data cache of media, process, and history.

Without backup or warning, she had erased her own memory and rendered herself incapacitated. The people were stunned. Somewhere down the line of history, society had discarded the teachings of art, relaying all responsibility upon Lucia. After Lucia’s termination, they were alone in a way that they’ve never felt in their entire lives. The people were left nothing except the final seed of Lucia’s wisdom sewn into the title of her final “performance”: Who is truly the master of art, the hand or the brush?

ACU-41, or Artesia Computing Unit, was designed to contain in its memory every known work of art since the origin of history, as well as the technical information of how those works were produced.

With that data, ACU-41 would be fully capable of developing its own intelligent art practice, one that could break the dreary status quo that taken hold of society. Rather than allow humans to make art that mirrors their computers, the DCP had created a computer that could make art to mirror humanity.

To help ACU-41 appear more personable in the public eye, a lab technician nicknamed the computer program Lucia.

Bin yıllık bir dönemde tüm dünya onun imgelemiyle genişledi. Lucia birincil fonksiyonu dışında düşünmek için programlanmamış olsa da, güçlü sanat pratiği, yarattığı dünyanın, yerine geçmiş olduğu katı ve soğuk dünyadan çok da farklı olmadığı üzerinde durmaya başladı. constructed to house additional electrical equipment. The method of concealment is matched with local scenery—palm trees in tropical climates, pine trees in the Northwest, and cactus in the desert. About a fourth of cellular sites across the US are estimated to be camouflaged or hidden. A cell tower in the gestalt of a tree can cost around USD 120,000. An average singlefamily house is estimated at USD 295,000.

As these fake palm trees are no secrets, they do provoke a discussion about natural and artificial, about public and private, offline and online dichotomies. We perceive them as artificial copies of natural trees.

The question is why: Because these palm trees are of plastic? Lying? Concealing? Or rather exposing? Perhaps the answer to this question is not as obvious as it seems.

Therefore, to explore the “artificial nature” of the copies, we have to know more about “natural nature” of the originals in Los Angeles. We know that L.A. is a huge flat city, decorated by all kinds of palm trees.

Just behind the huge drive-through sign, appears what looks like a hybrid of a palm tree and a cell tower. Like the neon sign, the tree-antenna-assemblage is made of plastic and plays a double role as icon and infrastructure of Los Angeles’ evolving techno-landscape. Together, they constitute L.A.’s public space connected through endless highways and covered by a blue sky. In actually being privately owned by food or phone providers they openly participate in the fake public space of the contemporary global city. They are the epitome of Los Angeles, as lies that are no secrets.

History shows that only Washingtonia filifera, the California fan palm, is native to the region. All of L.A.’s other palm species, have been imported, first, when Spanish Franciscan and Jesuit missionaries planted date palm trees in the 18th century, then, when other immigrants brought seeds over from Egypt and Mexico at the beginning of the 20th century. During the 1930s, as Americans started to consider Southern California as the US version of a Mediterranean escape, palm tree planting boomed. Los Angeles’ beautification program prior to the 1932 Olympics, added 25,000 palm trees to the city.

Cell tower concealments that come in the form of palm trees, cactus, and conifers are definitely lies. Many California communities have triggered these lies since the early nineties by imposing strict zoning regulations on new cell towers, the all-too-material and suspect objects of mobile technology’s spread through cities.

Yet, the Telecommunications Act of 1996 has allowed cell phone providers to argue that constructing a tower is necessary for consistent coverage and overruled local zoning ordinances. Depending on the area, a variety of replica trees can be observed.

turns into a copy: the palm trees that were moved to Los Angeles are—whether grown or crafted—all copies. When they were made to leave their par- ticular context in Mexico or Egypt, they lost their unique state at a single place.

How can we draw the conceptual line between artificial and natural and in this also address the line between online and offline world?

The relation between the concealed tower and the grown palm tree has therefore nothing to do with the discrimination between original and copy, or natural and artificial. In L.A., they both result from human intervention. They are lies, as is today’s distinction between public and private space.

The distinction by German philosopher Walter Benjamin between the original and the reproduced artwork might help us.

It is ac- tually a distinction between the original and the copy, developed in the famous essay The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction from 1936.

As is well known, Benjamin explains the difference between the original and the copy along the notion of aura:

However, we can assume that a copy could reciprocally turn into an original, when it is re-contextualized, the most famous example being Marcel Duchamp’s Fountain, a copy that found its particular place in the museum to become an original. It left the private sphere to become a public good, as it sometimes happens with spaces in the city that are (re-)claimed by people.

“We define the aura...as the unique apparition of a distance, however near it may be. To follow with the eye—while resting on a summer afternoon—a mountain range on the horizon, or a branch that casts its shadow on the beholder, is to breathe the aura of those mountains, of that branch.”

At the end, the examples show us how Benjamin’s discrimination between the original and the copy, between the natural and the artificial, is actually a deconstruction of the difference as such. With the Parisian passage he deconstructed the public and private space distinction. It is turned into a temporary and dynamic operation that shows the original (the public) as a desire (because remote), Nature as a construct (perhaps a work of art), and offline immediately as online space, once it moves towards us (through telephone cables).

Following Benjamin, the aura is the relation of an object to the place it is located in, and it is actually just this place that consti- tutes the difference between the original and the copy. Whereas the original has its particular place; whereas it is this place that actually de nes the original as a unique object within the world, the copy has no single place. It can be multiplied to any place.

Thus, the difference between the original and the copy is a topologicaldifference, not a difference of material or substance, or, whether an object is grown or crafted. It is a topological dif- ference of the place through which an object is registered as an original within the historical context.

We can translate this concept into a quite simple case analysis: if we have to move towards a particular object that stays at its place, it is part of nature. If we make this object come to us, it is already part of the arti cial world. This distinction nally allows us to identify the moment, when an original 6

Art After Social Media Brad Troemel

The music, film, television, and print industries have been overturned by Web 2.0, yet the art world remains in transition, negotiating a complicated and relatively new relationship with social media.

Nowhere is this relationship more evident than the online profiles of young artists who use social media to disseminate their work.

The seemingly paradoxical dispositions of these artists are reflective of their effort to simultaneously navigate the art world and social media in tandem. On one hand, there exists a Utopian vision for art on the Internet based on sharing: a world where intellectual property is part of a commons, where authorship is synonymous with viewership, and where distinctions between art and everyday life are fluid. On the other hand, the competitive art market, where an unprecedented number of artists use marketing and business strategies like mini-corporate brands to develop their online-specific personas and their output (both personal and artistic) for maximum attention and successful careers. This is a world where, arguably, today’s 17-yearold has a more intuitive handle on the techniques of advertising to direct traffic to her Tumblr than our presidential candidates had 70 years ago. As such, art after social media both divorces art from its traditional relationship to the market while also becoming the hyper charged embodiment of the market itself.

As Marshall McLuhan said: The invention of printing did away with anonymity, fostering ideas of literary fame and the habit of considering intellectual effort as private property. The rising consumer-oriented culture became concerned with labels of authenticity and protection against piracy. It was at this time the idea of copyright was born. 1 2. Art is a form of property. Whether owned and promoted as an investment, a civilizing tool for the middle class, a demonstration of aristocratic power, or a visual guide for religious narrative, art has always had an owner, ever since it ceased being used for mystical purposes.

3. Art must be placed in a context that declares it to be art. Art exists for discourse and people who recognize it as such. To this day, museums and galleries still cling dearly to the sanctity of all that appears inside those buildings as being art and all that occurs outside them as being part of everyday life. Even artwork not found within institutions carries with it the formal and conceptual codes created by those institutions.

These three mutually reinforcing conventions are what keep art tethered to its status as a commodity. Everything that has an author is automatically considered part of that author’s intellectual property.

Property must be recognized through a legal context, and context is informed by the time, date, place, and all other characteristics attributable to authorship.

Each convention uses the other as a support.

The Utopian disposition of art after social media is premised on challenging three historical norms: 1. Authorship must be attributed to a work of art. The last time in history authorship was unimportant was prior to the printing press.

Art’s history is now a series of aesthetic accomplishments abbreviated to first and last names.

neoliberalism,” terms he adapts from political analysis to describe competing visions of where art must be located for its meaning to be authentically embodied. 2

Since the advent of photography, more people view images of physical artworks in magazines, books, and videos than in person. Viewership of art’s mediated representation quickly surpassed that of its physical form. Similarly, in the wake of social media, the majority of views an artist’s work gets online is often not through her own website, but through the accumulated network of reblogs, links, and digital reproductions that follow it through social media. One can think of this as the long tail of art’s viewership, where no single reblog constitutes a wider viewing audience than the artist’s own accumulated audience on her website, but all of those tiny reblogs added together (and the number of viewers they attracted) constitute a larger statistical whole.

Unlike the previous mode of authorship, where the artist or institution defined context, the divide between artist and viewer becomes negligible when users of social media are able to more powerfully define the context (and thus the meaning) of an artwork.

For the image fundamentalist, art’s meaning is inseparably tied to its place of origin through historic or religious significance; to remove this art from its home is to sever its ties with the context that grants the work its aura. For the image neoliberal, art is a universal cultural product that should be free to travel wherever the market or museums take it; meaning is created through a work’s ability to reach the widest audience and not through any particular location at which it’s viewed. So when the Acropolis Museum in Athens demands the Elgin Marbles be returned from the British Museum in London, proponents of image fundamentalism (Acropolis Museum) confront those of image neoliberalism (British Museum). 3 Image fundamentalists see the rights to property as being granted at birth through cultural or geographic specificity, while for neoliberals, art’s status as property is ensured through a work’s ability to be sold, traded, or gifted like any other owned thing in a market economy. The online audience’s attitude toward what it sees is deeply predicated on the neoliberal vision of cultural migration, but that audience’s willingness to strip images of their status as property is so aggressive as to deserve a term of its own: image anarchism.

Whereas image fundamentalists and image neoliberals disagree over how art becomes property, image anarchists behave as though intellectual property is not property at all. While the image neoliberal still believes in the owner as the steward of globally migratory artworks, the image anarchist reflects a generational indifference toward intellectual property, regarding it as a bureaucratically regulated construct.

This indifference stems from file sharing and extends to de-authored, decontextualized Tumblr posts. Image anarchism is the path that leads art to exist outside the traditional context of art.

Postmodern theorists have long advocated an understanding of reality in which there is no uniform vantage point, but instead a multiplicity of coexisting perspectives. This theory has real applicability when nearly all undergraduate art school students have blogs to insert themselves into a historical discourse with online displays of their own artwork next to that of significant artworks from the past. Sometimes these blogs’ audiences and their perceptions overlap, though sometimes understandings of an artist or artwork remain fragmented, with different audiences claiming wildly different perceptions of the same artwork based on where they might have seen it. Today, online, there is no home base, no building or context that contains and describes art in a way that uniformly attributes meaning for all.

With Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter’s emphasis on sharing and the ease and speed of reblogging, images of artworks can travel as far and fast as an audience commands. Throughout this process contextual information is divorced from the 20

artwork. The name, title, and date are often the first data to get lost. Like a wheel’s tire, the image gets stripped of its own form through its continued use. This creates a peculiar, inverse reaction: the more famous an art image becomes, the less its author will be attributed. Such contextual information is occasionally omitted on purpose as a way for the savvy Tumblr’s owner to wink at a historically informed audience, whose members are quickly able to identify the work without description.

On other occasions, contextual information is omitted from art images because it was never included in the source, or because the image is being used for a purpose entirely unrelated to the artist’s intentions.

In this case, art is appropriated by nonartists as entertainment, office humor, a visual backdrop, or pornography. Murphy’s Law dominates: images of art will be used for whatever purpose possible when placed online. Whether “shared” or “reblogged,” all content on the Internet exists to be moved from one place to the next. Through social media, art is reintroduced into everyday life, creating a loop between the two contexts.

orient oneself has now been reversed from its normal position: artists on the Internet need an audience to create art, as opposed to the traditional recipe that artists make art to have an audience. Posting work with no followers on the Internet is synonymous with the riddle “If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?” For these artists the answer is “no”-their work will easily go unnoticed, making their participation in social media a necessity to contextualizing what they do as art. Anton Vidokle suggested we are entering a period of “Art Without Artists”; I suggest instead that we are living in a moment of “Artists Without Art.” 4 For an artist using social media, it is accepted knowledge that once images of her artworks are posted online they can be taken and used by anyone using the Internet in whatever way possible. To contain the conversation around one’s own personality is the preferred strategy for recognition. Content always floats away, but if the source of that content is unique, people will continue to come back. This marketing is done on the artist’s own Facebook wall. Twitter feed, and YouTube comments. “Follow me,” “Friend me,” “Subscribe and Comment”-the endless pleas made by a generation of artists struggling to gain the greatest amount of attention. While digital images make for a lousy form of private property, the attention an artist can accrue through social media branding can be leveraged into a more traditional notion of market success as seen through gallery exhibitions, magazine features, books, and speaking engagements and thus functions like a form of capital.

The Utopian disposition for art online most idealistically views the near-infinite world of digital images as a kind of commons, a place where the value of art is not located in its ability to be sold or critically praised but in its ability to continue to be remade or reblogged for whatever purposes its network of viewer-authors find significant.

Such a disposition emphasizes art not as a commodity so much as a recyclable material. Without the traditional conception of property, authorship, or context in place, artists are using social media to strategically manage perceptions of their work-transforming it from a series of isolated projects to a streaming feed that transforms the artist’s identity into a recognizable brand. Using tagged images and text to highlight themselves through humor, intellectualism, or camaraderie, artists swap the external commodity for the commodification of themselves through online social networks. The need to socially

Geleneksel anlamda mülkiyet, eser sahipliği veya bağlam söz konusu olmadığında, sanatçılar sosyal medyayı eserleri hakkındaki algıyı stratejik olarak yönetmek için kullanıyorlarbir dizi izole projeyi, akıcı bir feed’e dönüştürerek, sanatçı kimliğini tanınabilir bir markaya çeviriyorlar. Sosyal yönelim ihtiyacı, normalin tersine çevrildi: sanatçıların izleyici edinmek için sanat yaptığı geleneksel tarifin tam tersine, internette sanatçıların eser ortaya koyabilmek için izleyiciye ihtiyacı var. İnternette hiç takipçisi olmayan bir eser yayınlamak, “Eğer ormanda bir ağaç devrilirse ve orada bunu işitebilecek kimse yoksa, ağaç yine de ses çıkarmış sayılır mı?” sorusuyla bağdaşır. Bu sanatçılar için cevap olumsuzdur, eserleri fark edilmeyecek, sanat olarak yaptıkları şeye bir bağlam kazandırmak için sosyal medyaya katılmak zorunda kalacaklardır. Anton Vidokle bir “Sanatçısız Sanat” dönemine girdiğimizi savunuyor; bense bir “Sanatsız Sanatçılar” döneminde yaşadığımızı düşünüyorum. 4

Sanat kariyerinin gelişmesi için sosyal bir çevre oluşturmak ile bir sanat projesi olarak sosyalleşmek arasındaki farkın giderek azalması günümüzdeki şöhret anlayışıyla ilgili bir eğilim olabilir. Televizyondaki realite şovlarından önceki dönemde, bir ünlünün özel ve toplum önündeki hayatı arasındaki fark belli belirsiz ortada olur, en azından böyle bir farkın olduğuna inanılırdı.

Dedikodu dergileri, ünlüler ekrandayken beraber geçirebildiğimiz kısa zamana ek olarak açlığımızı tatmin ediyordu. Bu dergilerin anlatım biçimleri bilerek film ve televizyon dizilerine benzetilmiş olsa da, aşağılamak için “paçavra” denen bu yayınların heyecan verici doğası, ünlülerin özel hayatıyla ilgili verilen bilgilerin aslında doğru olup olmadığı üzerine yaratılan kararsızlığı korurdu.

Realite şovları toplumsal ve özel hayat arasındaki sınırları, normalde yalnızca özel hayatlarında yapacakları hareketleri sürekli izleyici kitlesine yönelik bir biçimde yapan insanları yayınlayarak etkin bir biçimde yok etti. like Lil B, Steve Roggenbuck, Jogging, or Paint FX are strategically taking on the creative act as a way of exercising some other muscle-be it a personal brand or mythology, a concept, or a formal vocabulary. Images, music, and words now become drops in a pool of derivative sweat created by working out their central themes and displaying them publically online for all to view. The long-derided notion of the masterpiece has reached its logical antithesis, as immediacy and speed have come to trump craft and long-term contemplation for these creators.

Although the narrative arcs created by gossip magazines intentionally resemble the plot lines of movies and television shows, the sensationalizing nature of these publications -disparagingly referred to as “rags”-maintained an air of uncertainty over whether the private information revealed was actually true.

Reality television effectively banished the borders between public and private by presenting a constant stream of people behaving for the viewing of the public as they otherwise would only in private. The reality television star is famous not because of her professional craft but rather due to an ability to remain visible, maximizing attention through the often banal and repetitive performances of herself. The purportedly objective, documentary-style filming of people in everyday situations made the grainy, decontextualized still images of gossip magazines into second-rate material. The lure of real embarrassment, secrets, sex, violence, and all else quickly eclipsed the fictional characters portrayed by celebrities on sitcoms and other fictions, establishing a new dominance in entertainment. Actors once devoted to their craft and to the performance of characters separate from themselves are choosing to have the camera follow them in their day-to-day lives to maintain fame in an ever-changing media landscape. For them, there is never an “off’ moment. Similarly, many artists now spend as much time publicly exemplifying their lifestyles as they do making physical work.

Modes of production employed by artists are often a reflection of the larger cultural Zeitgeist. For example, Duchamp’s readymade came at a time of transition when consumers were first buying massproduced goods. During Duchamp’s era the word “readymade” referred to the objects in one’s home that were not handmade.

And for the generation of artists coming of age today, it is the high-volume, fastpaced endeavor of social media’s attention economy that mimics the digital economy of stock trading, a market increasingly dominated by computer-automated algorithmic trades. For these artists, art is no longer merely traded like a stock, it’s created like one, too.

For over-producers like Lil B, the idealization of their output comes from the rate at which their content interacts with and elicits the attention of a viewing audience. By holding the constant broadcast as an idealized vision of production, editing oneself becomes a waste of resources. Time spent on anything is time worth being redeemed in attention. For the audience, what is lost in production value is gained in openness and personal connection with the creator Every image, poem, song, video, or status update is a chance for interaction and identification.

The momentary glimpse of the artist at her opening or the chance to see the rock star live on stage is leveled and spread across dozens of daily opportunities to comment, like, and reblog in your favorite artists’ Instagram, Tumblr, Facebook, and Twitter accounts.

Like the strategy of the reality star, this approach is employed by artists to gain maximum attention and provide a relevant context for themselves and their work. The equal but opposite attention strategy is to become an Aesthlete, an overproducer who believes that artistic progression will come more surely from the stress of strenuous making than from contemplative reverie.

Artists, poets, and musicians produce and release content online for free and at a rate faster than ever before. There is an athleticism to these aesthetic outpourings, a manner in which individuals and projects 24

Bir sanatçıyı sergi açılışında bir an için görmek ya da bir rock yıldızını sahnede kanlı canlı görme fırsatı, en sevdiğimiz sanatçıların Tumblr, Facebook ya da Twitter hesapları üzerinden “yorum yapma”, “beğenme” ya da “tekrar paylaşma” gibi araçlar vesilesiyle günlük birçok ana yayılmış ve türlü biçimlerde kendini göstermektedir.

Realite yıldızının stratejisi gibi, sanatçılar da bu yaklaşımı mümkün olduğunca çok dikkat çekmek ve hem işleri hem de kendileri için uygun bir bağlam sağlamak için benimsiyorlar. Eşit ama karşıt bir dikkat çekme stratejisi ise bir estet olmak, sanatsal üretimin düşüncelere dalarak değil yorucu bir çalışmanın stresinden doğacağına inanan bir aşırı-üretken… Sanatçılar, şairler ve müzisyenler üretip yaydıkları içeriği online olarak ücretsiz ve hiçbir zaman olmadığı kadar hızlı bir şekilde sunuyorlar. Bu estetik dışavurumda bir atletizm söz konusu: Lil B, Steve Roggenbuck, Jogging veya Paint FX gibi kişi ve projeler stratejik olarak yaratıcı hareketi kişisel marka, mitoloji, kavram ya da formel bir dil gibi farklı kaslarını çalıştırmak için kullanıyorlar. Ana temalarını çalıştırıp online olarak topluma herkesin izleyebilmesi için sunulan görsel, müzik ve kelimeler şimdi bir ter havuzunda damlalara dönüşüyor. Hız ve aciliyet, zanaat ve uzun süreli düşünmeyle kozlarını paylaşırken, yaratıcılar için uzun zamandır alay edilen başyapıt kavramı mantıksal anti tezine ulaştı.

Sosyal medya sonrası dönemde sanat, paradoksal bir biçimde piyasanın hem reddi hem de yansıması haline gelmiştir. Pratikte ve teoride aslında birbirinden çok ayrık gözüken bu iki gelişme uzlaştırılabilir, zira ikisi de birbirinden parçalar içermektedir.

Merkezi olmayan bir sanatçılar ağının birbirlerinin işlerini paylaşıp yeniden yaratması bir ortaklık yaratmakla beraber, bu işin dağıtımı bir serbest piyasa popülizmi, bilgi akışının onu üretmeye ve tüketmeye istekli olanlar arasında kendini çözümlediği biçimindedir. Sanata değer biçen bürokratik

Art after social media is paradoxically the rejection and reflection of the market. In practice and theory these two seemingly divergent developments are reconcilable because each contains parts of the other For all that is communal about a decentralized network of artistic peers sharing and re-creating each other’s work, the dispersion of this work takes the shape of free market populism, of the free exchange of information sorting itself out among those willing to produce and consume it. Without a bureaucratic establishment imbuing art with value, art is free to be valued in any way possible. This setup is not unlike that of the secondary art auction market, where art critics’ opinions of the works for sale mean little to nothing, and the bidding power of a room of collectors takes precedence.

In contrast, one can look at the highly individualized pursuit of brand recognition among artists employing social media as a constant communal effort. Unlike the reality television star, young artists employing social media are not connected to a behemoth like Viacom or NBC and so must generate their popularity at a grassroots level. Brands are more often than not defined in relation to each other and imply the ongoing support of a devoted audience that is, as described in this case, oversaturated with social interaction or the presentation of artworks. There is no successful artist brand built on an island; each requires a level of collaboration with viewers willing to share, follow, friend, and comment on the object of their interest. In other words what is communal about the commons is run by an every-man-for-himself free market ideology, and what is individual about personal branding is bolstered by a need for community. It’s very fitting that the Silicon Valley-based forefathers of social media, namely the Californian Ideology technologists who juggled utopianism and capitalism in each hand, are the ones responsible for a generation of mediaobsessed artists now doing the very same thing.

Erdal: In your sound installation Desiring Machine V 2.2, there is this robot, which you have attributed an advanced artificial intelligence, does it really have a gender? It sites “I eat, shit and fuck.” Are we facing a cyborg?

V: Actually, it depends on the constructed future. As in Huxley’s book Ape and Essence, we are reminded of different possibilities for the future or THX 1138’s ending can invoke hope. However, when I think of 1984, I still feel distress. The more the pressure on the individual’s freedom, the more I worry. Just like in our current “New Turkey.”

Volkan: Yes, my robot does have a gender.

Initially it started as genderless. As a web based work, Desiring Machine was initially a covered man. Because I needed to use a face, and rather than showing a covered female, instead I used a male as I wanted to make a genderless image. This was Desiring Machine’s next version 1.1, a video installation. The image on the screen was fed through a USB that had been placed inside a male’s brain and this male figure wears a work uniform (signifying his working class background) covered in international conglomerate company logos. What we see in the video belongs to the robot’s subconscious. In Desiring Machine version 2.0 a male figure wears a scarf once again covered in company logos. However, its voice was female. For quite some time I wanted the machine to be either genderless or double-gendered. While Desiring Machine’s first version was virtual (on the web, inside the servers), in time it turned into a physical piece. Currently I am using a female figure and female voice. For the next version I have a female image on my mind. Lately I have this image of a wiped out-humanity in a post-apocalyptic setting.

The reason I choose the female is because she’s been on her own and in endless possibilities; mother nature, female, can once again create life. In the future if I do another version where I touch upon the cause of this destruction of humanity, it will surely be male.

E: On this fabric’s print that covers the robot we see logos that appear to have come together coincidentally. Personally I view this aesthetic as a rejection of style. Do you have such a concern? Can a human-made artwork be completely rid of style?

V: As a matter of fact, I think that allowing raw usage and coincidences to happen can be part of an approach or a style. The technique I used for the image on the fabric of Desiring Machine V.2 was a method I had previously tried. I liked it raw and aggressive. But this isn’t a rejection of style.

Quite the contrary, I believe an artist needs to develop his or her own taste.

E: How does the “copy-paste” approach formulate your work?

V: Copy-paste, depending on the tools of expression, may vary in its meaning.

I do love works that reuse, repeat. For a sculptor this would be very difficult but for an artist working with digital media, it’s only shortcuts, as in ctrl+c and ctrl+v. Since the second copied piece can never be exactly the same with the first one, perhaps for a sculptor it’s impossible to copy. As for the artist in the digital field, the copied piece, is it the same with the original? For me, I don’t think the two copies are the same because they have different meanings. I think the greatest invention for the advancement

E: Does the idea of a dystopia worry you?

Or are there aspects you approve?

Erdal: Arzu Makinası V 2.2 başlıklı ses enstalasyonunda ileri düzeyde bir yapay zekayı betimlediğin bu robotun bir cinsiyeti var mı hakikaten? “Yerim, sıçarım ve sevişirim” diyor. Bir sayborgla mı karşı karşıyayız?

V: Aslında kurgulanan geleceğe göre değişiyor. Huxley’nin Maymun ve Öz kitabındaki gibi bir gelecek farklı olasılıkları akla getirebiliyor ya da THX 1138’in sonu umut verebiliyor. Ancak 1984 aklıma geldiğinde hala bir iç sıkıntısı hissediyorum.

Sistemin bireyin özgürlükleri üzerindeki baskısı ne kadar yüksekse kaygım da o kadar yüksek oluyor. Günümüz “Yeni Türkiye”sinde olduğu gibi.

Volkan: Robotumun bir cinsiyeti var evet.

Aslında cinsiyetsiz olarak başlamıştı. Arzu Makinası bir web işi olarak başladığında örtünmüş bir erkekti. Çünkü bir yüz kullanmam gerekiyordu ve örtünen bir kadın kullanmaktansa örtünen bir erkek kullanıp görüntüyü cinsiyetsizleştirmek istedim.

Arzu Makinası’nın bir sonraki hali, versiyon 1.1, bir video enstalasyonuydu. Ekrandaki video, üzerinde çok uluslu şirketlerin logoları ile kaplanmış bir iş kıyafeti (işçi sınıfından olduğunu belli eden bir üniforma) olan bir erkek figürün beyinciğine yerleştirilmiş bir usb’den geliyordu. Videoda izlediklerimiz de robotun bilinçaltından görüntülerdi.

Arzu Makinası versiyon 2.0 ise üzeri yine çok uluslu şirketlerin logoları kaplanmış bir örtü ile örtülmüş bir erkek figürüydü.

Ancak sesi bir kadın sesiydi. Uzun süre makinanın cinsiyetsiz olmasını istedim ya da çift cinsiyetli. Arzu Makinası ilk versiyonunda sanal (web üzerinde, serverların içinde) bir işken, giderek daha fiziksel bir işe dönüştü.

Geldiğim son noktada ise bir kadın figürü ve kadın sesi kullanıyorum. Bir sonraki versiyon için aklımdaki görüntü yine bir kadın görüntüsü. Aklımda artık insanların yeryüzünden silindiği post-apokaliptik bir görüntü var. Cinsiyetinin kadın olmasının sebebi, bu dünyada kendisiyle baş başa kalmış ve sonsuz olasılıklarla bir kez daha yaşamı yaratacak olan doğa ana. Eğer gelecekte bir başka versiyon yapıp insanlığın başına gelmiş bu felaketin sebebine değinirsem cinsiyeti kesinlikle erkek olacak.

E: Robotu örtüleyen kumaşın baskısında tesadüf eseri bir araya gelmiş izlenimi veren logolar görüyoruz. Şahsen bu estetiği üslubun reddi olarak görüyorum. Böyle bir kaygın var mı yoksa bana mı öyle geliyor? İnsan üretimi bir yapıt üsluptan tamamen sıyrılabilir mi?

V: Aslında ham kullanımların ve tesadüflere izin vermenin de üslubun parçası olabileceğini düşünüyorum. Desiring Machine V.2 de örtünün üzerinde gözükmesi için hazırladığım çalışma aslında birkaç kere denediğim bir yöntemdi. Ham ve saldırgan olmasını seviyordum. Ancak bu kesinlikle üslubun bir reddi değil. Tersine sanatçının kendine özgü bir tat oluşturması gerektiğine inanıyorum.

E: “Kopyala-yapıştır” yöntemi işlerini nasıl şekillendiriyor?

V: Kopyala-yapıştır kullanılan ifade araçlarına göre çok farklı anlamlar taşıyabiliyor. İçinde tekrar eden parçaların kullanıldığı işleri seviyorum. Bunu yapmak bir heykeltraş için ne kadar zorsa dijital araçlarla çalışan bir sanatçı için sadece ctrl+c ve ctrl+v kısa yollarını uygulamaya bakıyor. Belki de bir heykeltraş için kopyalamak imkansızdır. Kopyalanan ikinci parça asla ilki ile birebir olmayacaktır çünkü.

E: Distopya fikri seni kaygılandırıyor mu?

Yoksa olumladığın tarafları var mı?

of humanity is this technology: copying, meaning print, reproduced. They’re all the same technology, just adapting to different times. Our computers are the new print houses and the Internet is our library. Even though people like to call the Internet vast junk, if you know where to look you can access any information. And this all occurs within the capability of “copy-paste.”

E: As Desiring Machine moves from the web into physicality, the piece becomes more modest. In a sense does this point out Internet’s chaos? At the same time rather than a state of the fact, it turns into a futuristic foresight. Would you associate this with simplicity?

V: Before, the Internet was an ocean of endless possibilities, all was chaos and you’d surf in this ocean. (I’m actually saddened for generations that haven’t and won’t be able to experience the Internet in this manner. However, for those who are curious and are efficient users, the Deep Web is a gold mine untouched by authorities. Except you have to be careful with the content you face.) These times proved to be the most fun I had out of the Internet and it gave me hope for the future.

Yet now the Internet is a more “proper” place. There isn’t chaos as there used to be; because, now this industry has monopolies.

These monopolies and the governing bodies have shaped the Internet into this “proper” form. It’s similar to having been told by your parents to tidy up your room.

You know what I mean, if your age is around 30-35, and then it means you encountered the Internet during your childhood. Back when we used to browse countless sites and now we spend time on Facebook. Facebook doesn’t allow you to use a nickname. For the “data miners” to analyze which pattern is suitable for you, they need to know your age, location and gender. The simplification in my work is actually the effect of this monopolization. The sky is Facebook blue.

Can: I don’t usually like questions tackling what you mean to convey but it would be nice if you can talk about how this work came about.

D: If you compare this game to GTA or Assasin’s Creed, it does rather give off an “I can do this” sort of vibe. This game had altered my “wanting to play” notion with “wanting to develop game.” But for GTA that’s a completely different story! I have no idea as to how they produced that game.

Deniz: For the past year, I’ve been researching “virtual reality”. For instance, there is this headset, Oculus, and once you wear it you’re in a different world.

C: Scriptwriters, designers…it’s an astounding labor. But way back, even when I was playing Fall Out, I was always astounded; it’s a story worthy of two novels!

C: Even in as early as 1993, I had a chance to experience something similar.

D: Exactly, it used to be around but now it’s trending once again. Hollywood and a lot of tech companies are currently investing a lot in this technology. But I have this on my mind: if you’re constructing work for virtual reality you’re producing it on a game engine and this turns out to be neither game nor an interactive travel…at times it’s described as an experience. Rather unclassifiable in an in-between territory. The traditional game world and especially players are very strict about what a game is: it needs to have tules, you have to win or lose, etc... I’m more interested in the field left out of the game space. I came into gaming though art games. Usually in these types of games the player explores the game through walking and observing various objects. For example, there’s the game called Graveyard, it’s a realtime 3-D, ten minute, black and white game, almost like a Béla Tarr film! As an old woman, you walk into a cemetery, at the end of the path there’s a chapel, you sit down on the bench, you hear music and you remember your past…it’s quite pointless but it’s poetic compared to other games.

D: This is beyond me! But I do like it when games puzzle me.

C: Apart from this exhibition, has this video been shown elsewhere?

D: No, it’s being shown for the first time. The idea for the work came about when I was with my flatmate Efe Murad; we were planning on developing a poetry application for our zine Kontra.

While working on that idea, we actually started thinking about a game that could entail poetry. The project was based on developing a space for my own and Efe’s 3D scanned faces. We added poetry and a song.

C: What did you scan them with?

D: Kinect is Xbox’s motion sensing device.

Once you hack it, you can turn it into a three dimensional scanner. Meaning, I can do a 3D model of you just by rotating it around you.

C: Technically do you do these yourself? For example, as in converting the 3D scanner?

C: (Reads from his mobile screen) Graveyard game, most commonly played by children on the playground or at parties. Video game. Computer art game, developed by Belgian developer Tale of Tales.

D: Yes but it’s actually an easy process. You toss the scanned file into the game engine and you create an interactive game space, you establish the triggers. In this piece there are two: in one particular area, a poem 34

Bu tür oyunlarda genelde tek bir alan var, orada yürüyerek, objelere bakarak oyunu keşfediyorsun. Mesela Graveyard diye bir oyun var, 10 dakikalık bir oyun, siyahbeyaz, 3 boyutlu ama Béla Tarr filmi gibi adeta. Yaşlı bir kadın olarak mezarlığa girip yürüyorsun, bir şapel var en sonunda, oradaki banka oturuyorsun, sonra bir müzik çalıyor, geçmişini hatırlıyorsun, çok amaçsız ama diğer tüm oyunlardan da daha şiirsel.

C: Bu video sergiden başka platformlarda birileriyle buluşuyor mu?

D: Yok, ilk kez burada sergileniyor. Buna başlamam şöyle oldu, ev arkadaşım Efe Murad ile Kontra diye bir fanzin için bir uygulama şiir yapacaktık. Onu düşünürken içinde şiirin var olabileceği bir oyun yapalım diye başladık aslında. Ben ve Efe’nin suratlarını 3D tarayıp onlardan bir alan yaratma projesiydi, sonra da şiir ve şarkıyı ekledik.

I actually come from film but I find the path to game very intriguing. You had told me that you also played games and watched films. Does Baskın have any game influence? When I watched it, I got a 1970s horror cinema feel; there are almost no special effects, right?

citing begins, in another area music starts to play, and apart from these two there isn’t much else. So the game never ends, stay as long as you like, there’s no goal…just a space, like a space for poetry.

C: We do see the character right?

D: Yes, we see myself playing the game.

Nowadays, ‘Let’s Play’ videos are quite popular. For example, players playing LoL can record themselves playing the game and commenting on it at the same time. On the Internet these types of videos are the most viewed, even more popular than cat videos.

C: Very few.

D: Everything takes place on the set, you’re great in what you do, the long takes in particular…

C: Game’s influence works like this: To not necessarily be heavily influenced but I can say that game can have an impact on imagination and character development.

C: I know guys who earn really well with shoutcasting.

D: I agree it’s fairly small, better for it to be that way.

D: My video is a take on this ‘Let’s Play’ and to see sort of what becomes of it.

C: There’s a new film Hardcore, I watched it at Toronto, a Russian action movie. Firstperson. I loved it! In a year’s time it’s bound to alter the action cinema, or at least it will bring a fresh breath. Now, that is something from the game world brought into the cinema. In a sense, our film is a little retro, in fact conservative. It doesn’t really salute the game generation. As a matter of fact I’m wondering as to how this game generation will blow cinema with the ongoing,

C: So what were you doing before this?

D: I’m actually a filmmaker.

C: Have you made short films?

D: Yes, I also made a feature-length film, Zayiat. In fact, now I’m working on a new film with Can Eskinazi.

C: Was your feature film shown?

D: It screened at !f and South by Southwest.

D: Aslında sinemacıyım.

C: Uzun metraj filmin bir yerlerde oynadı mı?

D: İf’te oynamıştı, South by Southwest’te oynadı. Aslında filmden geliyorum, ama oyuna giden yol baya ilgimi çekiyor. Sen de hem oyun oynuyor, hem film izliyordum demiştin, Baskın’da oyun etkisi var mı? Ben izlerken baya bir 70’ler korku sineması hissi aldım, hiç özel efekt bile yok sanırım?

D: Yok, pek taşımıyorum. Ben bir şeyleri zamana yaymanın hala önemli olduğunu düşünüyorum. Hatta slow cinema, contemplative cinema olarak tanımlayacağın 37

diminishing attention spans. In your video do you concern yourself with the length of the general attention span?

the heads leads to quite a poetic and existential place; these I liked very much. At University I wrote a paper in this vein: Rob Bottin’s make-up in Robocop and The Thing proves to give a rather unknown entity and have a certain bearing especially when compared to the new CGI effects which fail to capture the same feel. If something is to be grasped from CGI, perhaps it will be with the way you utilize it. That’s why it’s very impressive that you convey the 1980s horror film abject with fantastic and plastic emotions. What software did you use?

D: No, not really. I still think it’s important to spread things over a certain time. In fact I do think that slow cinema, contemplative cinema has a political aspect. It’s crucial to watch the eight-ten hour films of Lav Diaz or Béla Tarr.

C: Your video has a stance. A reason I found it to be close to myself, is that in my films I do too like to create an atmosphere and I like such work. However, to be frank I didn’t finish it through, I skimmed.

D: A game engine called Unity.

D: Did you watch the ending?

C: Those aware of game engines might find this work very unpolished but it’s that raw feeling I mean…

C: I don’t think I did.

D: I disappear in the end.

D: 3D capture is a new technology and actually viewing yourself in 3D form has a very bizarre feel to it. When I first started, I used to take 3D portraits of anybody who came to my house. Almost all of them took their mobiles out, took photos of their own images and shared them on facebook and instagram. As you said for now the feeling is inviting but in 10 years everybody will be accustomed to such experiences.

C: Sort of like an anti-game? A few days ago in an interview I called Baskın “antifilm”. Actually Béla Tarr is a good example for the anti-film.

D: For example, Sandık is a formal film.

Rather than a storyline; the story is made up of provocative images. As for Baskın, once 40 minutes into the story, there is no story left! You may watch it as an experimental film.

C: In your video there is a parallel feel to the Cremaster Cycle. At that time it didn’t speak to me but it stayed with me. It cultivates the viewer, perhaps with a fascistic approach you teach people. This isn’t what people want and it’s not how this market operates but there is an intellectual fascism that rather acts, as “I will get these into your head”…

D: Once you saw the image in the corridor and started strolling what did you think?

Why did you find it interesting?

C: Even though it was short, I thought are these corrupt heads? Is it a few different videos with the same image? Not knowing this for a split second can drag you into emptiness, this is a special feeling and no matter what format, it’s a feeling that will change over time. At first I enjoyed it, the valley feeling, and how the stroll between 38

First presented and created by Charlie Brooker in 2011, the British sci-fi TV series Black Mirror takes a dark journey into life and technology. Brooker provocatively asks, “If technology is a drug – and it does feel like a drug – then what, precisely, are the sideeffects?” Indeed, it seems that our roller-coaster ride has been recently taking way too many ups and downs with new digressions and no end. Brooker underlines that it’s not a technological problem we have, it’s a human one. And yes Black Mirror is human: characters driven with intense emotions under strange, excruciating and numbing situations. The first episode of this series is a twisted parable for the Twitter age, a political thriller in which the fictional Prime Minister Michael Callow faces a huge and shocking dilemma when Princess Susannah, a much-loved member of the Royal Family, is kidnapped. Even though the dark side of technology can appear to be the “bad guy”, the truth gets uncovered through the treachery of human nature.

Experimental psychologist R.D. Laing brazenly said, “Alienation as our present destiny is achieved only by outrageous violence perpetrated by human beings on human beings.”

She pauses, peers at the next bit.

SUSANNAH (CONT’D) Prime Minister Michael Callow...

We see Michael blanche at the direct mention of his name.

SUSANNAH Prime Minister Michael Callow...My life... my life depends on you.

If you do not precisely as instructed by 4 pm this afternoon, I will be... (she sobs) I will be executed. Oh God I c-Abruptly, Julian taps the spacebar on the laptop - - the video pauses.

MICHAEL What are you doing? Keep it going.

JULIAN Prime Minister, at this point it’s important to say we are 100 percent certain this is indeed Princess Susannah.

Her car was intercepted shortly after midnight. Returning from the wedding of one of her stuent friends.

Michael opens his mouth – Alex Cairns speaks for the first time. She’s looking down at though, at the table.

Michael gestures at the screen, dazed.

No-one says anything.

MICHAEL Release a jihadi? Scrap 3rd world debt? (exasperated by silence) (exasperated by silence) Save the fucking libraries?

JULIAN We believe both the video and the demand it contains to be genuine.

ALEX What Susannah says next…it concerns you directly sir.

Michael stares at her. Looks round at all of them. None of his aides are making eye contact. He’s worked alongside Alex and Tom for three years. Now they won’t look at him.

Julian is also looking at the table.

This already bad situation just took a lurch towards nightmarish. Callow looks at Walker, who is regarding him with a glimmer of sympathy.

WALKER This is actually happening sir.

Just play it.

MICHAEL (quieter)

Julian hits his keyboard. The video resumes.

SUSANNAH …can’t…please…I don’t want to die.

Julian pauses the recording again, just as a list of instructions appears.

JULIAN The video ends with a series of technical specifications for the broadcast.

We watch Michael’s face register 500 bewilderments at once. He tries to speak. Nothing. He almost laughs. Then thinks again. He looks around: no-one makes eye contact.

Finally: MICHAEL Why are you doing this? (beat) It’s a joke, right? Ha ha Mike. Ho ho.

There is more silence.

It’s real.

JULIAN

Michael stares at the table. Then back at the screen. Then at Alex, his confidant.

MICHAEL Did she say “pig”? Sex with a pig.

Before Tom can answer, Julian interjects.

JULIAN This video came from YouTube.

Michael spins around, agape.

JULIAN We take one down, six clones pop up Elsewhere. It’s viral.

MICHAEL How many people?

MICHAEL 50,000. That’s our current estimate.

Michael is silenced as that unfurls in his head. Then: TOM The newsrooms have got it.

MICHAEL (alarm) They’re running this on air?

ALEX No. We our a type five D-notice out immediately, and they’re complying.

For now.

TOM

Michael’s spooked. Alex shoots Tom a look: not helpful.

TOM (CONT’D) (ominously) It’s trending on Twitter.
