JUMP INTO SUMMER!
jul/aug 2023
ummer months tend to have their own rhythm, with a sense of freedom brought on by warm sunshine and more hours in the day to enjoy it – whether by the pool, the beach or on the course. It could be a layover from those days when summer meant a break from school, and the usual things that keep us busy.
Our annual Fourth of July celebration at Berkeley Hall is an extension of that, a chance to relax and visit with family and friends. Excitement capped off by our Fireworks Finale that keeps all of us enthralled with its magic and beauty. The majesty of the message of freedom, it’s just one of those nights we love to share here at the Club.
Our July-August summer issue is as timeless as these treasured summertime traditions. It’s also a time for adventure, and we’ve got ample opportunity to explore new ventures. Just Do It! – Like those three words that defined Nike, I urge you to try something new. From paddleboard lessons to pickleball, it’s all right here. Our great golf professionals and racquet sports pros can take your game to the next level, and there’s no time like the present.
Even if you’ve never picked up a golf club, a paintbrush, or tried a yoga class, why not “just do it!” There’s a whole mind-body connection and the beauty of our Lowcountry landscape is inspiring to us all. From Spa treatments to casual kayak club outings, let’s immerse ourselves.
We never regret the new things we try, only those we never got around to. There’s also so much to explore right here in our backyard – Hilton Head Island beaches, Old Town Bluffton, Beaufort, Savannah and Charleston.
Summer is the season for adventure, let’s get out and enjoy it!

BHC ARTISTS CLUB:
t was early Spring when we first encountered BHC artist Leanora Colletti painting en plein air, in the Savannah Gardens. Joined by fellow artists Chris Crotty and Linda Coyne, they had set up their easels and were enjoying the beautiful setting as the concept for the BHC Artists Club took shape.
Initially they met in the gardens and as their numbers grew, they realized they needed a more permanent space. Now they’ve moved into the Fazio Room where they can spread out and focus on
their individual art forms. “We have so much talent here and we wanted to create a space for artists to come and work together, and inspire one another. At times we have a workshop, but generally meet here, then we may lunch at the Club and talk a little more about art and life,” laughs Leanora.
With so many artists in our midst, we hope more members will feel inspired to join in. And we’ll be featuring artists in our ongoing BHC Artist Series, as we celebrate the beauty and artistry of those among us.

Chris Crotty in the Fazio Room.
Here at the Fazio Room, the sound of creation is all around us, with soft brush strokes and quiet conversation. Chris Crotty is our first featured member, and on this day, she explains “Old World Master” techniques to achieve realism in portraiture.
Her example oil of husband Rob took home Best in Show and First Place in her hometown “Corry Artists’ Guild Sunday in the Park” art exhibit in Corry, PA.
As an American Southern Coast artist capturing the spirit of life in art, her “Learning to Run Against the Wind" oil was recently accepted into the Art League of Hilton Head 2023 Biennale Exhibition. The national juried art exhibition attracted more than 600 artworks from 35 states. Top pieces were selected based on originality of concept, composition, and execution.
BHC artists come together on Monday and Tuesday mornings to paint, sketch and create in the Fazio Room, which they have from 9am-3pm. From contemporary artists to landscape and still-lifes, the artwork is as varied as the artists themselves. Some quite accomplished, others just beginning to explore. All skill levels. Together, it’s a happy space to share art and conversation, and all are welcome to join in.
Surrounded by our scenes of Lowcountry beauty, Berkeley Hall artists have much to be inspired by. Oils, watercolors, needlepoint, sketches, photography, whatever your medium, everyone’s welcome, no rsvps needed. The Artists Club meets on Mondays and Tuesdays, 9am-3pm. Drop-ins encouraged. For more details, contact Leanora Colletti via text at 732-320-7159 or email at leanora1948@msn.com.

Books for July & August
“Demon Copperhead”
by Barbara Kingsolver
It’s a brave writer who takes on a retelling of Dickens. Yet the American author Barbara Kingsolver’s Demon Copperhead, which transposes this English, quasi-autobiographical Bildungsroman to her home territory of Appalachia, feels in many ways like the book she was born to write.
This powerful reimagining of David Copperfield follows one boy’s struggle to survive amid America’s opioid crisis. Kingsolver’s hero Damon Fields, known as Demon and nicknamed Copperhead for his red hair, is born to a drug-using teenage single mother in a trailer in Lee County, Virginia. After enduring being fostered by the pathologically insolvent McCobbs, Demon finds a home with Coach Winfield and his daughter Agnes. Under Winfield’s tutelage he becomes a rising school football star until an injury nudges his recreational drug habit into full-blown opioid addiction. David’s struggle to find purpose in life becomes Demon’s battle to achieve sobriety and transcend the failure of those around him “to see the worth of boys like me, beyond what work can be wrung out of us - Farm field, battlefield, football field.”
Review: The Guardian
“Remarkably Bright Creatures”
by Shelby Van Pelt
Tova Sullivan’s best friend is an octopus. A giant Pacific octopus named Marcellus, and the novel opens with the first chapters narrated in the first person by the octopus himself, who can do many things we don’t know he can do.
Tova has lived in town for most of her life, in a house built by her father. At age 70, she’s stoic but lives with layers of grief. Her estranged brother has just died, and her beloved husband died a couple of years before from cancer. But the unsealable wound is the disappearance 30 years ago of her only child. Erik was an 18-year-old golden boy, and the police, although they found no body, believe he killed himself. Tova does not.
Tova is too preoccupied to pay attention to the sweet but awkward flirting of Ethan, the Scotsman who runs the grocery store, but she does get drawn into the complicated life of a young man named Cameron who wanders into Sowell Bay. Although Tova and other characters are dealing with serious problems like loss, grief, and aging, Van Pelt maintains a light, warmly humorous tone.

ON THE GREENS: LOOK AHEAD
s we move into late summer, we can point to outstanding results from the South Course closure. While it was an ambitious agenda, the agronomy team implemented major course improvements which provided excellent playing surfaces, along with the critical aeration to the course.
The greens recovered quickly, and the fairways improved nicely following three different aeration processes and topdressing, as ryegrass began to disappear with the heat. We then fertilized the fairways to grow through the transition from the ryegrass to good success.
The rough on the South Course was core aerated and we continued our deep channeling between the cart path and the fairway. The team also completed bed enhancements on #18 and replaced a few sections of collar where celebration bermudagrass from the fairways had contaminated the tifgrand collars. Sections of poa in the collars were removed to keep it from getting into the greens. Cart path replacement was completed on #2, #3 and #12, and we also installed a practice fairway bunker at the driving range!
Of all the projects and work we completed during the closure, the fraze mowing of tees was the most aggressive process. In my two years here, we haven't focused as heavily on the tees as the fairways, greens, and rough, although we experimented with this process last year and were pleased with the results once again.
Projects on #5, and #16 South were completed along with landscaping on #16. These projects reduced our total bunkering on the South Course and will save us close to 500-man hours per year, raking and maintaining unused bunkers.
Membership will benefit by having more tee space and different playing angles into two great par 3s. It will also give the golf course maintenance team greater flexibility to distribute wear and tear on the tees.
We will be continuing drainage on the North Course later this summer. Overall, our robust approach over the last two years has greatly benefited both golf courses, especially in the winter and spring season. Our continuing goal is to provide the premier golf experience that our membership enjoys.
