Speaker Series with Elizabeth Angelone, Member/Photographer

TUESDAY, OCT 29 | 3-5PM

Celebrating the beauty of our Lowcountry setting – Elizabeth Angelone, member/photographer, captures exquisite views of our wildlife and nature.

BHC's Photography Club is a natural extension of our In-the-Zone wellness series philosophy, and all members are welcome. Join them at Tuesday's meeting from 3-5pm in the Palmetto Room with special guest speaker Elizabeth Angelone.

Immersed in the very setting of her subjects, most of her images are shot in

her Berkeley Hall backyard, “early in the morning or late afternoon when the light is soft,” shares Elizabeth.

She’ll talk a bit about camera angles, shots and movement, with a look at her images and other photographers that she loves and follows. Plus some how-tos on iPhone images and best settings. “Florals especially are great, for the wonderful detail,” she says, “although I most often use my camera for wildlife.”

PGA Magazine’s Working Together Series Showcases Berkeley Hall

Berkeley Hall’s Adam Kushner, GM/COO was recently featured in PGA Magazine's Working Together series. In the 4-page spread, Adam highlights our exceptional Club team and the key support of Dustin Dunn, Assistant GM.

As they say, "Teamwork is not just a buzzword in the successful operation of a golf club. It's the very essence that drives

every aspect of the club, from course maintenance to clubhouse management and all the collective efforts of the entire team." (You can find the full article on the member website.)

Around the Club, we've completed our Berkeley Room refresh along with the Men’s Locker Room update, and a classic Tap Room renovation you’ll be enjoying

come October. All these projects come down to that one important principle: Teamwork. “That's the key to our momentum that keeps driving us forward,” says Adam.

“We’re excited to kick off the fall season with our fresh Club updates, and now it’s all about gathering together and enjoying our enhanced Berkeley Experience!"

Welcome to Andrew & Amandine

s Berkeley Hall welcomes our 500th equity member family, the club is poised to grow into its settled stage of 530-540 homes.

“It’s always been our goal to remain an intentionally smaller, welcoming community,” shares Adam Kushner, GM/COO.

“We’ve just gotten here a little sooner than originally thought possible, thanks to the Club’s momentum!”

Dr. Andrew and Amandine Stevens were drawn to Berkeley Hall from the first moment they entered our gates. Below, we welcome them and share their story, as they get ready to build their new home here at Berkeley Hall.

BHC: What drew you both to BHC?

A&A: “We knew as soon as we drove along the tree-lined streets of Berkeley Hall that we felt very at home,” said Amandine. “It reminded us of growing up in Canada and Andrew is an avid golfer, so the stunning golf courses drew him in immediately.”

“And Amandine felt a strong sense of community and comfort as we explored the neighborhood,” added Andrew.

BHC: Tell us a bit of your story, how did you meet and what brought you to relocate to the Lowcountry from the West Coast?

Amandine: “We met in university through mutual friends, actually Andrew’s brother Scott, and have been together ever since,” said Amandine. “We didn’t know where we’d be heading after the West Coast - we circled some states on the map that appealed to us, including coastal South Carolina. When Andrew (a pulmonary critical care specialist) was offered a position with Beaufort Memorial Hospital, we knew we had to see the area. BHC’s long, lush roads had an endearing familiarity, it reminds us of driving to our cottage in Canada.”

BHC: Amandine, as co-founder of Amandine Sol Botanicals skincare and lifestyle brand, will you find it easy to work from the Lowcountry?

Amandine: Each time I’ve moved my business, from Canada to LA and now LA to South Carolina, it has evolved in a new and exciting way, integrating into new environments within the local wellness and self-care community. I’m very

passionate about how wellness and beauty can connect us and love sharing what inspired the line – family, nature, and a return to simplicity.

BHC: When it comes to our Lowcountry lifestyle, were there any amenities that stood out?

A&A: “We’re drawn to the leisurely lifestyle here, and there’s so much I’m excited to dive into, from spa and wellness to culinary,” said Amandine. “Just being able to head out to the course, hit a few balls after work,” shares Andrew. “Kind of gave us that aha moment, we can have this dream now, one we always thought would be further in our future.”

BHC: Building your dream home is a wonderful journey, what influenced your decision to build at BHC?

A&A: “We toured a number of communities from Bluffton to Beaufort, and when we came here, we knew we’d found our home. We saw ample opportunity to build what would be perfect for us as we enter this next chapter – a spin on the modern farmhouse, with some beautiful details that make it ours.”

The Children's Center
Bluffton Self Help

eals on Wheels provides a healthy hot meal to 186 neighbors in the Bluffton area each day. That translates to over 50,000 meals annually.

“The request for meals is increasing dramatically as local residents age and their cost of living outpaces their income. Rent alone in our area has increased over 30% in the past two years making meal insecurity a real issue,” explains Linda Pitts, BHCF Grants Chair.

Linda and her husband Larry have been delivering meals for MOW for the past four years. “When we started, there were 3 MOW routes in Bluffton – Today there are 5 routes, with 3 in Sun City alone.”

In our greater Bluffton area, there are a growing number of couples and single residents who want to remain independent and stay in their own homes. MOW gives them the confidence of knowing a hot meal will be delivered Monday-Friday and a frozen meal for the weekend, taking at least one worry off their plate.

MOW is only one of the 2024 Grant Recipients the Charitable Foundation supports. All of our non-profit grant recipients are doing equally important work that focuses on children, the disabled, the elderly/infirm, low-income families, veterans, education, abuse prevention and housing the homeless.

With compassion and dedication, these agencies work diligently to improve the lives of the most vulnerable in our community.

Please join your Berkeley Hall neighbors at the Charity Cup event on October 14th for golf and a night under the tent as we come together to “Make a Difference Locally”. We cannot do it without each of YOU!

Thank you for your continued commitment and support!

Please contact me if you’d like to learn more about our grants and the agencies we support.

Meals On Wheels is much MORE THAN A MEAL. It is a daily knock on the door that lets the clients know someone is checking on them and can help if needed. MOW also provides volunteers with emergency phone numbers for each client in the event they do not answer the door or find them in distress. Here, we share a few of their stories: (names have been changed).

Sharon’s arthritis is getting much worse. When meals are delivered, we loosen the water bottle cap and at times, she asks for help with other bottles and containers she cannot open.

Bob is a disabled veteran whose wife of many years passed away. Bob has limited

resources and is not able to prepare his own meals. He looks forward to the variety of food delivered (something different every day for a month and then the menu repeats) and the daily interaction with volunteers.

John, a new client 89 years old, had been taking care of his wife, who has Alzheimer’s.

He was unable to leave her alone even to grocery shop and had never cooked. Neighbors had been buying microwaveable frozen meals for the two of them for the past year. A nurse practitioner reached out to MOW and they are now getting the MOW help they need.

“Tom Lake” by Ann Patchett

“Tom Lake” revolves around a central love story, one Lara Kenison tells her three daughters, Emily, Maisie and Nell, over the long, strange summer of 2020 on the family-run cherry farm in Michigan. It is the story of her affair with a famous actor named Peter Duke, which took place when both were in summer stock at Tom Lake, Michigan, when Lara was 19 years old. The girls have heard parts of it before, but this time they’re getting the full account. Lara starts at the very beginning, when she played Emily in a community theater production of “Our Town,” which led to a brief career in Hollywood and then a reprise of the role of Emily at Tom Lake. “Tom Lake” is her first novel with a narrator who is a mother, whose maternal role and emotions are at the core of who she is.

West of Inverness in Scotland is a castle called Eilean Donan Castle dating back to the 1200’s. Recently the castle has seen some location

filming for movies such as Highlander, The World is Not Enough, and Maid of Honor. As we toured the castle, I spotted a familiar logo in a few pieces of artwork on the castle walls. Amazing to see the Berkeley Shield making an appearance so far from South Carolina, and gain a little context to the history of the Shield!

WITH KRISTA DUNTON

October 16-18 | October 29-31

$2,395/pp Non-Member | $2,195/pp Member

Top 100 Instructor Krista Dunton brings a level of excitement to Berkeley Hall Golf Academy that’s unparalleled.

Dunton’s unique, custom approach is matched by the award-winning technology at Berkeley Hall’s 33-acre Learning Center. “We have the technology to properly diagnose what’s going on with the golf ball, the golf club. I individualize what you can do with your body through bio-swing dynamics, because

everyone is built differently. No one is going to swing the golf club the same, nor should they, as we all have different physical structures. In my 25-plus years of teaching, what makes me different is I know what to leave alone and what to pinpoint and fix so you build a golf swing you can own and it can repeat on the course.”

Once on the course, Dunton works on the other elements of human skills: how you think, react to your shot, manage your emotions and develop great technical skills that repeat under pressure, with a good mental set that allows you to perform at your best.

“We are fortunate to have some of the best technology so we can measure and assess. We measure so we don’t guess, and the changes we make as your teachers and coaches are going to help you improve your game.”

We want to offer you something different, and customize it to you, the individual. I believe everyone has their own unique swing DNA. We work with what you have, and enhance that and make it better.
–Krista Dunton

DAY 1 We use technology to get a game plan of where you are and where you’re going to go to.

DAY 2 The process of getting your game on the course. How to think correctly, make it productive, implement swing changes under competition and pressure.

DAY 3 How to keep this going, and practice correctly and efficiently.

“We want to teach you how to manage variability. What I love about our Learning Center and two golf courses, is we’ve got every shot imaginable you can learn to play,” adds Dunton. “We teach you a variety of shots, different trajectories –so when you go on the course, you take those shots you learned in practice and tap into that with confidence.”

ON THE GREENS: FALL ON THE NORTH COURSE

s we welcome the cooler days of fall, we’re pleased to look back on the immensely successful summer we’ve seen on the South Course. With the lower temps, the South rough has begun to grow a bit more slowly and this month we’ll begin overseeding so we can continue to enjoy great winter playing conditions.

Our agronomy team performed exceptionally well, and we thank them for their hard work in keeping the South Course pristine while completing the North Course project and maneuvering around some excessive rainfall.

As you may remember, the South Course will close for 10 days in order to let the rye grass begin to grow. As the course opens, the rye grass will be intentionally long, and the fairways will be a bit wet until the temperatures cool and the grass is strong enough to take our winter mowing heights.

As for the North Course, we look forward to opening in the next few weeks. We were fortunate to get off to a quick start with a dry June which put us ahead of schedule into early July. It was then the weather and Tropical Storm Debby made

it more challenging to get sod on property without too much disturbance throughout the course.

When you regrass a course, there is much involved to make the new turf playable. In August, we aerated all of the fairways and rough, top dressed heavily, and mowed in various directions to try to train the turf to

forward to for years to come.

This fall and winter, you may notice the fairways are a bit longer than we typically keep them. This is in an effort to keep the young turf healthy during the winter season. We will plan on cutting the fairways to our normal length when the temperatures rise in 2025.

We’re excited to welcome you back to enjoy a refined North Course experience!
–Adam Miller

make it smoother for carts to drive over and the ball to sit nicely on the turf.

As happy as we are with the North Course, we know as with all golf course projects, it will take about a year for the new turf to really mature and play the way we look

Thank you for your continued support! We’re excited to welcome you back to enjoy a refined North Course experience, along with all the updated aesthetics throughout the course.

See you on the greens!
