CONDÉ NAST TRAVELER’S GOLD LIST SHOWCASES CHARLESTON'S ZERO GEORGE Once again, a Lowcountry destination has graced Condé Nast Traveler as a “best of ” location in the recently released “Gold List.” In the publication’s 31st list of the world’s “Best Hotels and Resorts in the US, Canada, and the Caribbean: The Gold List 2025” included just one South Carolina locale. This year, Zero George in Historic Downtown Charleston has made the coveted list. The hotel’s magic lies in the exclusivity and privacy of its interior: a hidden labyrinth of meticulously manicured gardens, crushed oyster shell pathways, and calming fountains connecting five distinct historic dwellings into a retreat guests love to call their home in the Holy City. JAN 6 | 3PM | THE VERANDAH “Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow” by Gabrielle Zevin On a bitter-cold day, in the December of his junior year at Harvard, Sam Masur exits a subway car and sees, amid the hordes of people waiting on the platform, Sadie Green. He calls her name. For a moment, she pretends she hasn't heard him, but then she turns, and a game begins: a legendary collaboration that will launch them to stardom. These friends, intimates since childhood, borrow money, beg favors, and, before even graduating college, they have created their first blockbuster, Ichigo. Overnight, the world is theirs. Spanning thirty years, Gabrielle Zevin's Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow is a dazzling and intricately imagined novel that examines the multifarious nature of identity, disability, failure, the redemptive possibilities in play, and above all, our need to connect: to be loved and to love. Yes, it is a love story, but it is not one you have read before. Review: Good Reads

FEB 3 | 3PM | THE VERANDAH “Finding Margaret Fuller” by Allison Pataki Pataki (The Magnificent Lives of Marjorie Post) takes readers on a trans-Atlantic journey in this fictional biography of Transcendentalist writer Margaret Fuller. In 1836, Ralph Waldo Emerson offers the 26-year-old scholar a job as editor of his magazine the Dial. She accepts, but strikes out on her own months later. After publishing two successful books, she travels to Rome in 1847 as a foreign news correspondent where she meets and marries a man who appreciates her active mind. In 1848, Italy joins the wave of nationalist democratic revolutions against monarchies across Europe, and Margaret hides in the countryside to give birth to her son. On the way back to Rome, she is nearly killed in an attack, and she and her family depart for America. Pataki’s star-studded, gripping account is full of lush details about the life of an overlooked contributor to Transcendentalism and women’s rights. This is one to savor. Review: Publishers Weekly

GOLF MAINTENANCE UPDATE
ON THE GREENS 2025 LOOK AHEAD
O
ur Lowcountry setting is a golfer’s dream, making it easy to enjoy both courses even during our coolest months. As we look ahead to 2025, we know that transitioning into winter brings unique seasonal challenges to our courses. Cooler weather brings about conditions that require thoughtful maintenance and heightened member care to keep our courses in pristine condition. Here, we’ll highlight key areas of focus, including bunker care, divot filling, cart patterns, shade management, and ball mark repair. FILLING DIVOTS DILIGENCE: With the grass growing more slowly or becoming dormant, divots take longer to heal in winter. When divots are left unfixed, they detract from the course’s appearance and also create uneven surfaces. • Use the sand provided on carts to fill your divots after each shot, leveling the sand with your foot or a club for a smooth finish. • If you notice unfilled divots during your round, take a moment to fill them in – every little effort makes a difference.
VARYING CART PATTERNS Dormant Bermudagrass is less resilient to wear and tear, making cart traffic a significant concern during the winter. Repeated cart use in the same areas can cause compaction and lasting damage to the turf. • Follow directional signs and cart path rules at all times. • Avoid driving in the same spots as others; spreading out traffic minimizes stress on any one area. • Use cart paths as much as possible, especially near greens, tees, and sensitive areas. SHADE AND COURSE CONDITIONS Winter’s lower sun angle and cooler temperatures make shaded areas particularly vulnerable. Limited sunlight reduces the ability of turfgrass to recover, especially during dormancy. Areas under trees or near bunkers often see the most stress.
can affect both the appearance and playability of the greens. • Always repair your ball marks — and one or two others if you notice them. • Use a ball mark repair tool to gently push the edges of the mark toward the center, avoiding pulling or twisting motions that can damage the roots. A SHARED RESPONSIBILITY At Berkeley Hall Club, the beauty and playability of our courses are unparalleled. Maintaining these high standards through the winter months requires a collective effort. By filling divots, repairing ball marks, varying cart patterns, and taking extra care with bunkers, you can help ensure we preserve the course and your premier golfing experience.
BALL MARK REPAIR: A SMALL ACTION WITH BIG IMPACT Winter greens are firmer, making ball marks more pronounced and slower to heal. Left unrepaired, these marks

With a challenging set of varying weekly exercises, Jade takes us to fitness levels we’d be pressed to reach on our own, incorporating strength and resistance training, balance routines, and stretching therapy. She tracks these activities with an eye on continuous improvement, and awareness of limitations consistent with our age and history. We are so appreciative of Jade!” – Trish and Jeff Hoffman

“Spending 52 years as a CPA translated to many hours at my desk, not so many working out. Four months ago, I started training with Jade twice a week, and thought I’d continue on as I’ve done before, only to give up after a few solo sessions, however, the variation this time is Jade. In addition to physical fitness instruction, she’s also provided eating and dietary suggestions which have totally changed my life! She has been influential in improving my physical and mental health. A fantastic motivator, she pushes me to my limits but not beyond!" – Mike Cross

MIND & BODY
Jackie Spindel, Certified Pilates Instructor Transformational Movement
O
ne of the fastest growing areas in fitness, Pilates, pioneered by the late Joseph Pilates, is a mindbody exercise system designed to optimize physical fitness at every level. The proven, core strengthening program packs lots of benefits with its low impact yet challenging form.
Top Benefits of Pilates:
Here at Berkeley Hall, private trainer Jackie Spindel is classically, and Stott equipment trained in teaching and instructing Pilates.
• Increases muscular endurance and tone
Deeply versed in the movements and benefits of Pilates, Jackie holds a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Brooklyn College, NY, and is a certified personal trainer in several fitness disciplines including Pilates, TRX, Zumba and more.
How Do Reformer Workouts Differ?
“Reformer Pilates is an experience that transforms mind and body,” explains Jackie. “The reformer Pilates machine isolates your muscles for a low-impact workout that tones your core. People are increasingly interested in fitness modalities that help relieve stress, are kinder to the body, and offer prevention of injuries with exercise that can be continued as they age.” Here, Jackie shares some of Pilates’ top core strengths and health benefits.
• Builds core strength and stability • Improves posture and alignment • Increases flexibility, balance and coordination • Improves muscular balance and strength
• Prevents injury and heightens body awareness Reformers are designed to make your Pilates workout more intense. By adding varying levels of resistance via springs, and using slow, controlled movements, you strengthen and tone muscles all over your body. What Differentiates Stott Pilates? The contemporary approach to the original Pilates method, Stott Pilates focuses on improving posture and strength while developing flexibility and endurance without building bulk or stressing the body. Based on the principles of Pilates, the focus is on neutral spine alignment, the natural curvature of the back, and sequential exercise.
I’ve been doing weekly Pilates sessions with Jackie for the past year, machine and mat. You need to have complete confidence in your instructor, it’s very important. I’ve been doing Pilates for 30 years, all over the world from England to Mexico, and Italy, and now here at Berkeley Hall. Jackie is very aware of my limitations, and always asks how I am. She’s very in tune. I was trained classically, she is more Stott oriented, I like the way she knows how to morph into classically trained Pilates, with Joseph Pilates’ specific movements and methods that differ from Stott Pilates. When I began Pilates, I had serious Plantar Fasciitis. I tried traditional treatment but had no relief. I started Pilates and within three weeks it went away, because of the stretching and strengthening. My husband Bill and I also did Pilates training together for six months to prepare for a backpack tour on top of the Rockies years ago, from Aspen to Vail! The club’s Pilates program was a big selling point for me when we joined Berkeley Hall! – Susan Viechnicki
