Thanksgiving Feast

Grand Tree Lighting

New year's eve party

Thanksgiving at Berkeley Hall is a treasured tradition, an homage to all the Lowcountry’s bounty from our Oyster Roast to Thanksgiving at the BHC table, and then we’re into the holiday season with the annual Tree Lighting on the Mall.

As we find ourselves reflecting on the past year, we have so much to celebrate. 2024 has been an exciting year for the Club as we crested 500 property owner members, successfully regrassed the North Course, completed Clubhouse updates and enjoyed the countless community events that bring everyone closer to their neighbors.

There’s so much to be thankful for, and I know many of you share my sentiments when I say I’m particularly thankful for the wonderful team we have here at Berkeley Hall. Their dedication, warm and welcoming smiles, always looking to best assist members and their teammates shines through. It’s this teamwork and sense of community that allows us to so effectively enhance our amenities as we approach future projects, all the while delivering a great Member Experience.

Cooler nights and beautiful days such as these are what make living in the Lowcountry unlike anywhere else.

As we gather for the holidays, be sure to mark your calendars for all our festive signature events! Come enjoy wonderful holiday culinary fare, it’s a fun, festive time to celebrate with our good friends here and family. I look forward to celebrating the best of the season with all of you!

“Lady Tan’s Circle of Women”

by Lisa See

Tan Yunxian was a real historical figure in 15th-century China who published a book about her career as a physician, but little is known about her personal life. See creates a rich story about a girl born into an aristocratic family. That accident of birth should have written her fate: limited education, bound feet, arranged marriage, childbirth, life spent behind the walls of family compounds. She doesn’t escape all those things, but after the early death of her mother, she’s raised by her

paternal grandparents, both doctors, and given an unusually advanced education, including the healing arts. A life constrained by rules governing class and gender, she is literally never alone. Women’s friendships in a world where they have little freedom shape a quietly moving book.

2024 NORTH-SOUTH CHALLENGE

Our Fall season, as always, began with the North-South Challenge. The South team were defending their 2023 title, and looking to keep the bragging rights for another year. We had a full field with 30 teams representing the South team and 20 teams representing the North team. Once again, it was a closely fought contest with less than a very small margin between the teams at the end. But it was the North team that was victorious this year and the North flag will fly proudly for the next 12 months!

ON THE GREENS

Fall season in the Lowcountry is always spectacular. As we look back on the past year, it’s been quite a busy one for the Golf Course Maintenance (GCM) team. The weather has kept us on our toes, alternating between heavy rains and extended periods of beautiful, dry conditions. We’re currently on track for our wettest year in a decade, but ironically, as we head into late fall and winter, we could still use some rain.

Winter is always a challenging season for our bermudagrass, and recent dry conditions are accelerating its dormancy. While dry weather offers excellent playing conditions, it also puts additional stress on the grass as it struggles to store carbohydrates in preparation for the cooler months.

Throughout the summer, our team worked tirelessly to maintain the South Course’s excellent condition, while also managing the demands of the North Course. After a busy season, we followed up with a scheduled closure of the South Course for overseeding and minor aeration on the greens. Just as we completed the overseeding, Hurricane Helene arrived, leaving us with significant debris to clean up. Once the cleanup was behind us, we were ready to shift into maintenance and detail

mode for the fall tournament season.

But, as golf often teaches us, plans can change. A sinkhole unexpectedly opened up on Hole #1 South. Initially, we thought it was caused by a faulty drainpipe, but as we started digging we realized the issue was far more extensive. Fortunately, the repair went well, though we may see some settling after future rain. If needed, we’ll re-level the area to keep things in top shape.

from black double-wall plastic, with diameters ranging from 4 to 12 inches. Finally, there’s the 2016 drainage system, which pulls water off the fairways and funnels it into the original transport network.

Because many of these pipes are buried deep—like the 16-foot hole we uncovered on #1 South—they were installed before the course was shaped. As part of our ongoing maintenance, we’ll be evaluating the

The culprit was part of the original transport drainage system, installed during the course’s construction. Berkeley’s drainage system actually consists of three interconnected components. The first is the stormwater system, made up of 24-inch to 60-inch concrete pipes, connecting community stormwater routes to the ponds across the courses. The second is the transport system, which directs water from greens, tees, bunkers, and round catch drains to the ponds. These pipes are made

depth of these systems across the property. This will give us a clearer picture of potential problem areas and help us respond efficiently.

We hope this gives you some insight into the complexity of Berkeley’s drainage systems. Thank you for your continued support throughout this season’s projects, aerations, and unexpected challenges like the sinkhole. With clear, sunny skies and cooler temps, we look forward to seeing you out on the greens!

What is Hyper Wellness?

Josh Lieberman has always had a passion for health, wellness, fitness and education.

With a bachelor’s degree from University of Redlands, and a master’s degree from University of California, Santa Barbara, he wanted to combine his science background with the areas of health and wellness to educate individuals and communities on proactive wellness. It’s his belief that “you have more

control over your health than you think.” This led him to Restore Hyper Wellness as regional manager, and the initiative to bring holistic and alternative care to the Hilton Head, Bluffton and Charleston regions.

During this informational session, you’ll learn how to achieve Hyper Wellness by utilizing natural, holistic and science backed therapies. Josh will dive deep into these therapies and how each can help overcome limitations such as chronic low

energy, pain and inflammation, weight loss and insomnia while promoting performance, recovery and longevity. Attendees are also welcome to receive a complimentary compression.

Topic-related modalities include Infrared Sauna, Red Light Therapy, IV Drip & NAD+ Cryotherapy and Hydrafacials.

INNOVATIVE AGING therapeutic massage & bodywork treatments

At the Spa with Kathryne McCracken, LMT, CLT

At the Spa at Berkeley Hall, Kathryne brings her passion, knowledge, and credentials to offer individually customized therapeutic massage and bodywork treatments. With training in kinesiology and anatomy and physiology, she’s also currently doing graduate research in “Innovative Aging” at the University of Florida School of Medicine. As a specialist in Myofascial Therapy and a Certified Lymphedema Therapist, she’s able to apply her advanced knowledge to therapies and treatments.

Did you know dehydration is a leading cause of premature aging, and those “knots” you feel in your

muscles are areas of dehydration? “Myofascial Therapy is the only known treatment that rehydrates those knots. Lymphatic Drainage Massage further helps rehydrate the body as it bolsters the immune system,” shares Kathryne. "Most wear-and-tear on the body is caused by everyday activities, and regularly scheduled bodywork treatments can prevent that from leading to injury and pain.” Here, we catch up with her to touch on some highlights:

BHC: Top Areas of Specialty?

KM: Myofascial Therapy, Lymphatic Drainage Massage, Individually customized therapies.

BHC: Tell us about Innovative Aging.

KM: I chose to pursue a graduate degree in “Innovative Aging” because in my 16+ years of experience, I’ve seen

many clients turn back the hands of time through therapeutic bodywork treatments. They feel younger, and can get back to enjoying favorite activities and sports. Pain should not be a part of aging if you use your body right!

BHC: New Massage Treatments Now Available?

KM: Foot scrub with deep tissue massage to the leg to align the joints and improve balance. This treatment is 30-minutes, or can be added to a 60 or 90-minute treatment.

BHC: Your Philosophy of Mind and Body?

KM: My treatments are restorative, as clients enjoy a deeply relaxed, restful state of healing. My philosophy, “If you don’t take care of your body, where are you going to live?”
