TOASTING TO THE GOOD LIFE With oysters steamed and waiting to be piled on your table, there’s plenty to toast about – with our gathering of friendly faces, good stories, and where a shared passion for the Lowcountry is all you need. 6

NOV 27 | 6-8PM Fall in the Lowcountry is all about gathering with good friends and family, celebrating the bounty of our riches. Here at Berkeley Hall, our River Park oyster roast is part of our tradition, connecting us by the annual rituals of shucking and steaming, at long tables outdoors in the cool, autumn air. Set on the banks of the Okatie River, live music by guitarist/vocalist Whitley Deputy plays as the oyster roast gets underway, and a roaring fire draws our young ones with marshmallows to roast, and the rest of us with wine, and drinks by the fire as the embers glow brightly. The perfect way to usher in Thanksgiving weekend, our annual fall tradition welcomes everyone home and invites you to warm-up by the fire...these Lowcountry evenings are as good as it gets.

BERKELEY HALL GOLF

We had an absolutely perfect weekend for the 2019 Berkeley Classic. With a field of 48 teams, the Championship was up for grabs. The greens were running at about 12’6” all weekend, so teams that were able to stay below the hole had a definite advantage. After the shamble and alternate shot on day one, the flights remained very tight, but 18 holes of better ball on the second day separated the field. On the final day, a lot of teams clawed their way back into contention during the scramble and one or more formats. In the end, nine teams entered the shootout with a chance to win. After our 3-hole shootout, we still had three teams tied for first place. The three teams replayed the 9th hole in a modified alternate shot format. Jason Barney bombed a drive into the right rough and his father, Brian Barney hit a beautiful shot over the bunker to 8 feet. Jason rolled the putt in for a 3 for 2 securing the Championship for the father-son duo.

MASTER THE KEYS TO BEING A GREAT PUTTER WITH THIS SIMPLE DRILL. The four keys to being a great putter include: 1. Starting your ball online 2. Distance Control 3. Green Reading 4. Positive Mindset In this drill all of these skills will be practiced. To set up the drill, you need to first read the putt and determine the break, this develops your green reading skills. It’s a 3 point game and here is how you play. Place two ball markers about 3/4 of the way to hole. This will be the gate that ball needs to roll through in order to go in the hole. If it goes through the gate: 1 point. Place an alignment shaft behind the hole. For putts inside 12 feet place the rod 2 feet behind the hole. For putts 12-20 feet place it 3 feet behind the hole. Your goal is for your ball to get past the front of the hole but not hit the alignment stick. 1 Point if it ends past the hole but doesn’t hit the alignment stick. The third point is if your ball goes in the hole. That means your read, speed and line were all correct! Hit 4 balls and see how many points you can earn. Then change angles and repeat. Work on right to left and left to right breaking putts. The beauty of this drill is that you will receive feedback on all of the 4 keys. If your ball doesn’t go through the gates either you need to adjust your read or the face is re-tiring open or closed at impact. If you leave the putt short or long, need to work on speed. Challenge yourself and see how many points your can score. Have a competition with a friend. Create that on-course pressure to sharpen your mindset. Stay positive!! Remember all great putters believe they are great putters regardless of outcome!

Winter Golf Season in the Lowcountry

Balancing beautiful greens and Lowcountry winters poses challenges for golf courses superintendents across the region, and the warm season turf we manage. We’ve found that low temperatures have not been the primary concern for Berkeley Hall’s agronomy team during the non-growing season, but the abundance of rainfall we’ve experienced and lack of sunlight. Since 2015, our area has averaged around 20 inches of rainfall from November to January. Along with precipitation comes overcast skies and lack of sunlight. This combination can be problematic for our warm season Bermuda turf that requires high light intensity to survive. Anticipating and preparing our turf for this type of weather pattern is of utmost importance to turf survival. Through successful planning, we’ve been able to maintain premier playing surfaces that will withstand our mostly temperate winter months. On the North Course, preparation for a wet winter began this past summer 20

with an application of a half-inch of sand topdressing on fairways and greens surrounds. Continuing to modify our heavy clay soils annually with coarse sand will improve playability with better percolation rates, resulting in a dryer surface following rain events during the non-growing season. In addition to sand topdressing, both North and South Courses have applied multiple fertilizer applications throughout the fall season, containing nitrogen and potassium. This will increase turf density, carbohydrate storage and provide top growth in order to withstand high cart traffic during the busy fall golf season. The South Course will over-seed fairways and green surrounds with perennial

rye grass this fall for the first time in 16 years. The purpose of this application was to turn a negative (consistent wet winters) into a possible positive. Applying rye grass in mid-November following the fall golf season will allow the natural yearly winter rainfall to provide the moisture needed for seed germination. Actively growing turf will provide some water uptake during winter rain events along with turf density for playability. Our goal is to have beautiful and well-maintained courses for members and guests to enjoy, and by implementing pro-active methods during these winter months we are protecting the quality of the playing surface for today as well as for years to come.

Holiday Do’s and Don’ts

The holidays are here and they’re meant to be enjoyed! When it comes to looking your best this season, our #1 tip is to stay active! It’s a great time of year to change up your workouts, and add a little more cardio so you can enjoy all those holiday gatherings without the guilt. The key, of course, is moderation. Think twice about indulging in

Instead of this... Sour Cream

Green Bean Casserole

all your favorites at once. Would you rather have the chocolate mousse or enjoy the cheese tray? The right choices let you be festive and avoid holiday remorse. From cocktails to casseroles, our healthy “Swap Outs” below can make all the difference.

Try this...

Here's why

Greek Yogurt

Swap to plain, non-fat Greek yogurt to give your dishes more protein, less fat. Mashed potatoes, casseroles and sauces can be healthier & taste nearly identical.

Sautéed Green Beans

Green bean casserole is a classic, but butter, cheese, salt, creamy soup, and fried onions really tack on the calories. Try sautéing your green beans. Toss with olive oil, salt, pepper, and slivered almonds for added protein and healthy fats!

Cocktail Mixers Sparkling Water

Most mixed drinks contain up to 30 grams of sugar. Bypass empty calories for sparkling water flavored with fresh ginger, mint or, fruit.

THIS IS YOUR YEAR! TRAIN WITH TREVOR: It's that time of year when it comes to changing up our workout routines. Ready to mix things up?
