FROM THE CLUBHOUSE

As we prepare to turn the page on another year, it is certain that 2020 will forever be ingrained in the lives of many, all over the world. Here at Berkeley Hall, I know many share my sentiment that it brought out the very best in our community. Club members came together in such a heartfelt way to support the Berkeley Hall team, club operations, and one another. Our team will be forever grateful to our membership and for the opportunity to serve the community during this time. Together, we navigated, and remain committed to, providing world-class service on every level, with food-to-go options, safe dining, fitness services and golf experiences while others across the country were unable to do so. Many of you also shared what a safe haven you find Berkeley Hall to be, a sanctuary in this world of uncertainty.

This is the time of year when we reflect on what we’re thankful for. When it comes to the game of golf, I know we are all thankful for our ability to enjoy our beautiful courses and temperate weather. There is no doubt that 2020 has reignited interest in the game of golf across our country, and a renewed interest in the golf community lifestyle. We are clearly experiencing that as we see the most real estate activity here since before the recession in 2008. With all of the excitement surrounding our community, we continue to look at who we want to be moving forward. The sand-capping and re-grassing of the South Course were a tremendous success. What’s next? The final proposal for the Four-Seasons Veranda is right around the corner and we are looking forward to seeing plans for Mixed Grille renovations which will help set the tone for further Clubhouse enhancements. As I reflect on my first year as General Manager, it has certainly presented its share of challenges. I am thankful to have such a great team and membership, and I believe that Berkeley Hall is one of the few communities that will say goodbye to 2020 with a head of steam into the new year.

REAL ESTATE: BY THE NUMBERS You may have noticed increased real estate activity, and our numbers keep trending up! Since January, we have sold 22 homes, with 32 homes /properties under contract, as well as 18 under construction and 15 under ARB review. September alone saw 13 homes go under contract. Some are Member-to-Member referrals, and we see that number growing as members share the good news about our community and what we have to offer. As we work through our current lot inventory, it is exciting to see current members that are choosing to build new homes, new members building their forever homes and builders constructing spec homes to provide additional inventory to prospective members. We are looking forward to welcoming many new members before the end of the year. 2

BOARD CANDIDATE MEET & GREET NOV 2 | 4-5:30PM

Berkeley Hall is fast approaching its 20th birthday, as we now find ourselves considering how best to invest in our next 20 years. The Master Plan addresses these realities, and has been in development for the past 19 months with direction from leading gated golf course community architects, designers, Club staff and members. In December of 2019 and January of 2020, we delivered presentations and focus group sessions to determine the level of interest. The Club was poised to move ahead with a membership vote on the scope and cost of what was then called Phase 1 of the Master Plan, the renovation of the entire Clubhouse with the addition of the Four-Seasons Veranda. In March, everything was put on hold due to COVID-19. In June, the Master Plan Committee developed a modified Phase 1 proposal for implementing just the Four-Seasons Veranda, Mixed Grille

remodeling, and a Kitchen renovation. Not only will the project provide an exciting, new dining and gathering venue for members, it will also attract prospective members weighing comparative advantages of other clubs. Staff and our consultants will continue working with a number of General Contractors through early November to determine a cost estimate that is realistic and complete enough to present to membership. Hopefully, we will have all the information required prior to the Annual Meeting in order for each member to make an informed decision on whether to proceed with Phase 1. Implementation of the Master Plan is a cornerstone piece of our efforts to enhance our member experience, and re-position Berkeley Hall as the Lowcountry’s premier private golf community for the next 20 years.

We're pleased to announce the candidates for election to the Board for the 2021-2023 term: Bill Barnett, Bill Corcoran, Linda Gettings, Jim Spear and Bill Viechnicki. Join us for an informal Candidate Meet & Greet on Monday, November 2nd from 4-5:30pm in the Mixed Grille, to learn more about each candidate. Due to social distancing guidelines, seating is limited to 50 attendees with reservations required. Videos of the candidates will also be available for view on the member website BerkeleyHallClub.com.

BERKELEY HALL ANNUAL MEETING DEC 12 | 4-6PM The Berkeley Hall Annual Meeting will be held on Saturday, December 12th from 4-6pm in the Mixed Grille. Due to social distancing guidelines, seating is limited to 50 attendees with reservations required. This year, in addition to the option to call-in by phone, members will be invited to virtually join the Annual Meeting via Zoom as well. Registration available on the online events calendar.

FROM THE ARB: LIGHTING YOUR HOME Beautiful lighting sets the approach for your home, and Berkeley Hall’s understated elegance reflects this so well. Residence and landscape lighting at its best is subtle, understated, and purposeful. While lighting sources are hidden from view, the focus serves to illuminate driveways, paths, and steps for safe movement. Keep bulb wattage to a minimum. A single fixture may not exceed 75 watts for incandescent or 1100 lumens for LED. It

4

BERKELEYHALLCLUB.COM

may be necessary to reduce the wattage of individual bulbs to 25 or even 15 watts, and color temperature should not exceed 3,000 (K) kelvins. Color temperature can dramatically change the appearance of a bulb. High color temperatures appear cool and blue while low color temperatures appear yellow and warmer. All exterior lighting locations require ARB approval prior to installation.

The Charity Cup has become our signature fundraising event, and thanks to the generosity of the BHC community, the charitable foundation exceeded our goal this year. Together, we raised more than $226,000 for local charities. Monies raised at the Charity Cup event will fund the 2021 grant cycle and the need this year is greater than ever. The Berkeley Hall community has a rich history of philanthropy in the Lowcountry. Our Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation’s vision is to ‘Make a difference by addressing the basic human needs of the greater Bluffton Community, especially those who are most vulnerable.’ With the help of our membership, the Charity Cup event and our inaugural online auction achieved tremendous success. And while the event looked

“The Dutch House” by Ann Patchett Nov 2 | Ladies Locker Room | 3pm Maeve and Danny Conroy grew up in the storied Dutch House, a 1922 mansion in the Philadelphia suburbs commissioned by the VanHoebeek family, who made a fortune in cigarettes and filled their home with European treasures. The Dutch House is the stuff of fairy tales, and Patchett’s plot sounds like a fairy tale, as well. A mother who runs away from home, an orphaned sister and brother displaced by a grasping stepmother – bare summary sounds like melodrama, and this plot would devolve into cliche in the hands of a softer, more sentimental novelist. Fortunately, Patchett is made of sterner stuff. Review: The Washington Post The Book Club wishes everyone Happy Holidays! fter a spectacular October, we hit November with some great events to finish the year. It will be exciting to see the Masters played at Augusta this November. Here at Berkeley Hall we look forward to the

Member-Member, The Women’s Invitational and the Club Championship being played in November. December will see the Club Challenge and the HAIG. Sure to be a great finish to the year! It is hard to believe that 2021 is right

NORTH SOUTH RECAP

October 3rd saw the re-opening of the South Course, with the North-South Challenge. The South team were defending their title from 2019, and everyone was looking forward to getting back out onto the South Course to experience the new fairways. We had a full field of 96 players, and glorious sunshine for the day. The South team put up a valiant effort to defend their title, but it was the North team that ended the day victorious! The North Flag will fly high for the year, and I am sure the South team will look to get their own back next year.

We were blessed with a fabulous three days for the Berkeley Classic in mid October. 54 pairs took to the wellmanicured North and South Courses to battle it out in their flights. Players had to hold their nerve all the way to the final 9-hole round, as all the flights were tightly contested. All but two of the flights were decided by three strokes or less, so we could not have asked for a more exciting finish. The nine flight winners then proceeded to the 3-hole Championship Shootout, and as always the shootout produced even more drama to finish.

around the corner. As Berkeley Hall enters its third decade, we look forward to many fabulous golf events for years to come. The 2021 golf schedule has been set and we look forward to seeing many of you at the events during the year. Shadow Creek Flight: Ben Shelley & Tim Reynolds Alotian Club Flight: Jeff Rokisky & Ryan Rokisky Estancia Club Flight: Tom Beaumonte & Mike Formica Dallas National Flight: Steve Pleasants & Rob Lattig Gozzer Ranch Flight: Brian Barney & Jason Barney (Overall Champions) Sage Valley Flight: Chris Virgulak & Scott Virgulak Hudson National Flight: Steve Delaney & David Nelson Wade Hampton Flight: Brett Williams & Ted Comes

The 2019 Champions – Brian & Jason Barney – held on to defend their title and become the 2020 Berkeley Classic Champions.

WITH KRISTA DUNTON November 4-6 | November 13-15 | $1,750/pp Non-Member | $1,550/pp Member Top 100 Instructor Krista Dunton brings a level of excitement to Berkeley Hall Golf Academy that’s unparalleled.

Dunton’s unique, custom approach is matched by the award-winning technology at Berkeley Hall’s 33-acre Learning Center. “We have the technology to properly diagnose what’s going on with the golf ball, the golf club. I individualize what you can do with your body through bio-swing dynamics, because

everyone is built differently. No one is going to swing the golf club the same, nor should they, as we all have different physical structures. In my 25-plus years of teaching, what makes me different is I know what to leave alone and what to pinpoint and fix so you build a golf swing you can own and it can repeat on the course.” Once on the course, Dunton works on the other elements of human skills: how you think, react to your shot, manage your emotions and develop great technical skills that repeat under pressure, with a good mental set that allows you to perform at your best. “We are fortunate to have some of the best technology so we can measure and assess. We measure so we don’t guess, and the changes we make as your teachers and coaches are going to help you improve your game.”

We want to offer you something different, and customize it to you, the individual. I believe everyone has their own unique swing DNA. We work with what you have, and enhance that and make it better.

BERKELEY HALL

GOLF ACADEMY

DAY 1

We use technology to get a game plan of where you are and where you’re going to go to. DAY 2

The process of getting your game on the course. How to think correctly, make it productive, implement swing changes under competition and pressure. DAY 3

How to keep this going, and practice correctly and efficiently. “We want to teach you how to manage variability. What I love about our Learning Center and two golf courses, is we’ve got every shot imaginable you can learn to play,” adds Dunton. “We teach you a variety of shots, different trajectories – so when you go on the course, you take those shots you learned in practice and tap into that with confidence.”

GOLFING WEATHER AT ITS BEST

owcountry weather smiles on golfers, and now that fall and soon winter season will be upon us, the tempera- tures have cooled down for perfect golfing weather.

On the South Course, the new fairways have performed exceptionally well since the re-opening on October 3rd. While the North Course is enjoying some relief from golf traffic throughout the summer’s South Course closure. The onset of cooler temperatures also marks the end of the growing season for our Bermuda turf on the courses. Fall pre-emergent herbicides have been applied for winter weeds, and the agronomy team continues to monitor cart traffic and use lighter cutting units to mow fairways and approaches to reduce stress on the non-growing Bermuda turf. Fall Season And Frost Delays. Now, as temperatures start becoming cooler, frost delays can begin to effect early morning tee times, even in the Lowcounty! Golfers may find it hard to 20

believe, with our temperate climate, but there is a true purpose and important reasoning that goes into any delay in play. In two words: Turf Damage. Frost is basically frozen dew that has crystallized on the grass, making it hard and brittle. A blade of grass is actually 90% water, therefore it also freezes with cold temperatures. Because of the short mowing height and fragile nature of the turf, putting greens are most affected by frost. Walking on frost-covered greens causes the plant to break and cell walls to rupture, thereby losing its ability to function normally.

ur top priority is maintaining and O ensuring the quality of turf conditions. This is why course preparations come to a halt until thawing occurs. Golf carts can cause considerable damage; which is why we wait until the day warms up a bit before we maneuver around the course to mow, change cup positions and collect range balls. Our goal is to have a beautiful and well-maintained golf course for our members and guests to enjoy, and by implementing frost delays we are protecting the quality of the playing surface for today as well as for years to come.
