IN OUR BACKYARD FOR THE VALENTINES MAKING A DIFFERENCE 2020 USGA CHAMPIONSHIP
FROM THE CLUBHOUSE As we usher in the New Year, I am again reminded of what a special community we call home at Berkeley Hall. In this issue, we wanted to showcase the extraordinary natural beauty of our Lowcountry setting, and no one captures it more exquisitely than member/ photographer Elizabeth Angelone, whose cover art and photography on page 5 offers us an inside view. January brings a full roster of member events from our BHCF’s annual Member Mingle to a special Great Gatsby evening, and a spirited Name That Tune game night. In February, it’s the Valentine’s Dinner Dance, Latin Night, and an evening with Napa’s Arietta Winery. As we embark on the new year, the Club looks forward to the 2020 Women’s Mid-Am Championship, August 27September 3. As host site, Berkeley Hall is working closely with the USGA and our Championship Committees to finalize logistics and provide a memorable experience for all involved. Find out more and learn how you can take part on pages 14-15.
Berkeley Hall golfers enjoy play yearround and we’ve rolled out our 2020-21 events here. When it comes to signature tournaments, three stand out as headliners, the Berkeley Cup, Member-Member, and Berkeley Classic. Sign-up early, these fill up quickly. Our new Jump Start golf program debuts in January, and you can read all about it in this issue, along with our featured Q&A with Berkeley Hall’s Krista Dunton, with excerpts from her recent interview with Executive Golfer magazine. In the Fitness Center, we have an exciting lineup of racquet sports clinics and fitness classes. Get in gear for the new year and give our new cycling class a spin. Cheers to 2020! he diversity and abundance of birds in the Lowcountry offers us unique opportunities to enjoy our environment. Our state offers habitat for birds in our mountainous areas all the way to the coast, providing for the 375 bird species recorded in South Carolina. Many types of waterfowl migrate to our area to feed and escape the cold of the north. These birds can be seen in great numbers throughout the ACE Basin and nearby Savannah Wildlife Refuge. Frequently seen are green-winged teal, lesser scaup, ruddy duck, among many others.
The Lowcountry supports a winter home for many coastal birds. These birds each have unique survival tactics that are more pronounced and dramatic than many other types of birds. Some of these unique adaptations are easy to see by the appearance
ARB Update
2019 brought an active year of construction for Berkeley Hall. Since January of 2019, 18 new homes have been submitted for review by the ARB and 14 homes are currently under construction. Berkeley Hall is currently at 61% build-out.

of their feet, legs, beaks, and camouflage. These attributes can be seen in action, if you are in the right place at the right time and patient enough to observe these amazing animals in their natural environment. We are also fortunate to be in a corridor for “neotropical migratory birds” such as warblers, vireos, thrushes, tanagers, flycatchers, and orioles. These birds spend the summers breeding in the U.S. and Canada and winter in Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. Some neotropical birds travel for up to four months and more than 6,000-miles, one way. Springtime is a perfect time to observe these birds passing through our area as they travel back north to their breeding grounds. Bald Eagles, owls, hawks, falcons, and vultures can all be frequently seen living happily within Berkeley Hall. It’s easy to promote a welcoming habitat in your own backyard; with bird-friendly landscapes that include native plants, supplemental food sources, and a water source. Landscape plant varieties can also play a large role in attracting the eight varieties of South Carolina hummingbirds to your property. Watching these birds in their natural habitat is an excellent way to enjoy the outdoors, understand our complex ecosystems, and appreciate all the Lowcountry has to offer.
Beach Club Membership at Westin Resort & Spa The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa offers a limited number of beach club memberships to Berkeley Hall Club members. Enjoy this oceanfront resort through February 28, 2021, along with access to their private beach, use of beach towels, parking privileges at the hotel and a 15% discount at Splash poolside deck restaurant. Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation
Thanks to the Berkeley Hall community’s extraordinary generosity, the Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation has raised over $1.4 million for Lowcountry charities since its inception in 2008. Each year, monies raised at the annual event fund the following year's grant cycle. This past December, BHCF approved $245,000 in grants to fund 24 projects for 20 non-profits, that will have a considerable impact on improving the lives of many Bluffton residents.

oin us for our annual Member Mingle event on Thursday, January 23 at 5pm to honor the BHCF 2019 grant recipients and give heartfelt thanks for the generosity of our membership that made these grants possible. Please RSVP on the BHC online events calendar so we can accommodate all attendees. Thank you, Berkeley Hall members, for your continued compassion, concern, and generosity!
2019 Grant Recipients: Backpack Buddies of Bluffton, Bluffton Self Help, Bluffton-Jasper County Volunteers in Medicine, Boys and Girls Club of Bluffton, Boys and Girls Club/Family Promise Collab., Child Abuse Prevention Assoc., The Children’s Center, Deep Well, Family Promise, Heroes on Horseback, Hopeful Horizons, The Literacy Center, Lowcountry Autism, Lowcountry Legal Volunteers, Meals on Wheels, Memory Matters, Pregnancy Center of the Lowcountry, Programs for Exceptional People, Second Helpings, and Vantage Point Foundation.
Meet your Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation Grant Committee – this hardworking
group, chaired by Mary Lou Bacik, are very active in their role which encompasses far more than granting. There is a great deal of research, ongoing involvement and review that goes hand-in-hand with the considerable deliberation and rigorous application standards each grant applicant must meet prior to grant approval. Here, Mary Lou and long-time committee member Margaret Norris give us a better idea of the process and what our grant-making means to the greater Bluffton community. 6

BHC: The impact of BHCF grantmaking to local charities has been far-reaching, tell us more: MLB: This is the fourth grant cycle I have had the privilege of working on, with other members of the Grant Committee. Our funding moves through the Bluffton community, offering a safety net for families and individuals who might otherwise be unable to remain self-supporting. BHCF grants have helped the most vulnerable in Bluffton, including those that need medical care, additional resources to feed their families, as well as supporting mental health, and those at risk from abusive situations. We support adult literacy, tuition assistance for children of Bluffton’s working poor, respite care for caregivers, and assistance for low income families to obtain legal services.
BHC: What is the process for finalizing grants? MLB: The BHCF grant application is posted to the Berkeley Hall website each June, so 501c3s can download the form and submit by August 15. Once all the applications are in, each grantee is visited by at least two members of the Grant Committee, who then return back to inform all the committee members about the project that funds are being applied for. If further questions arise, as they often do with a new grantee, additional visits are made. Then the committee votes to fund deserving projects. BHC: The follow-up process has been very rewarding; can you share a few examples? MN: Grantees provide two follow-up reports; a semi-annual report to show how the money is being spent, and a final report on how the money has been spent. The follow-up is so rewarding because you get to see how it’s helping. The charities are hugely grateful. They couldn’t do what they do otherwise. I’m so impressed with the people who work there, their patience and knowledge. At the Boys and Girls Club, they know the name of every child, it’s remarkable. At Hopeful Horizons, they make families feel safe. Their outside playground was one of our first grants. This year the Lowcountry Autism Foundation was new to us. These families meet obstacles every day that are hard to imagine.
MLB: All of us on the committee have come to know members of different charities and the projects they are trying to fund. We see the results in families who succeed in educating their children, in organizations that keep children and parents safe from abusive situations, in the successful placement of families in better, safer housing. We see teenagers become better citizens of their communities. I want to recognize the work of the committee and specifically the work of Pat Jackson Valentino and Leslie Lawson, our two past Grant Committee Chairs. Their focus and forward thinking have moved our grant process to a new level, their commitment to the mission of “helping Bluffton’s most vulnerable” has been inspiring to all of us who have worked with them.
BHC: How has the Grant Process evolved over the years? MN: It’s grown tougher as grant requests continue to grow, fortunately our fundraising arm has done such a good job so we are able to provide the help that’s so badly needed. The reason we started out with the mission to help the most vulnerable people is because we thought that was a mission everyone could get behind, and they do. I wish everyone could do a stint on the committee. Volunteers find you get far more out of it than you give. When it comes to making a difference, the Charitable Foundation really does. The work we’re able to do will benefit all of our grantees’ and the people they serve for many years to come. JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2020

oin us for a night of wine complemented by fine dining with Arietta Winery on Tuesday, February 25 at 6pm. From the heart of Napa Valley’s wine country, Arietta wines are characterized by their European influences and wonderful aromatics. Proprietors Fritz and Caren Hatton continue in the tradition they began as original founders along with longtime Napa winemaker John Kongsgaard. Arietta’s renowned "On the White Keys" white wine is a blend of hillside Sauvignon Blanc and old vine Semillon, fermented and aged for nine months in a combination of new and second-use oak and stainless-steel barrels. The label incorporates the manuscript of the
Arietta movement from Beethoven's last piano sonata, Opus 111. The key to the name "On the White Keys" is the melody of the Arietta theme, which is played in its entirety on the white keys of the piano. This evening will also feature Arietta’s Red Wine H Block Hudson Vineyards, Arietta's flagship blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot along with the exquisite Arietta Quartet, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot from carefully chosen vineyard blocks in the Napa Valley. Exquisite wines with well-paired courses by Chef McAllister make this an evening to be savored. $114 Inclusive of Tax & Service Fee Mixed Grille | Member Charge Bar

“A Secret History” by Donna Tartt Jan 6 | Ladies Locker Room | 3pm Donna Tartt, winner of the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for her most recent novel, “The Goldfinch,” established herself as a major talent with “The Secret History,” which has become a contemporary classic. Under the influence of their charismatic classics’ professor, a group of clever, eccentric misfits at an elite New England college discover a way of thinking and living that is a world away from the humdrum existence of their contemporaries. But when they go beyond the boundaries of normal morality their lives are changed profoundly and forever, and they discover how hard it can be to truly live and how easy it is to kill. 2020 MAJOR GOLF EVENTS
n 2019, the weather got us off to a pretty rocky start, but I would say that like the weather, golf at Berkeley Hall rebounded very well. We had a very busy spring, capped off by a tremendously successful Charity Cup in May. In July, we celebrated the 20th and final playing of the Players Amateur. The Players Am field consisted of five Walker Cup participants, a new course record, and an incredible come-from-behind victory with Spencer Ralston’s final round 63. After an early hurricane scare, the fall turned out to be
pretty nice. We set new records for the Berkeley Classic and Ladies’ Invitational and the Club Challenge sold out once again. Although 2019 was an exciting year, I am certain 2020 will be even better. We will kick off the Season with the Berkeley Cup at the end of February and then March and April will be jam-packed until we close down the South Course for re-grassing. We hope that everyone will come out and support the Mixed Member-Member and Member-Member throughout the spring.

WITH KRISTA DUNTON
A
s Director of Golf Instruction at Berkeley Hall’s Learning Center, Krista is widely recognized as one of the best teachers in the game. A former LPGA “National Teacher of the Year,” Krista holds the distinction of being listed multiple times as a “Top 100 Instructor” and “Top 100 Teachers in America” by Golf Magazine and Golf Digest. Recently interviewed by Executive Golfer magazine, below are a few insights into her winning approach, which will be featured in their upcoming issue.
what the person is capable of doing physically to change their movement pattern; and emotionally and mentally what is the most effective way for me to communicate to them so the change is easy to implement.
BHC: What’s the Secret to being a Top 100 Instructor?
This allows me to customize information specifically to each student. Being a great communicator is also important, because teaching is about developing relationships. The difference between a good and a great teacher is that ability to take lots of complex information and simplify and individualize it for the student. The best teachers I have ever watched say the least and get the most results. Our job is to make it easy on the student.
KD: I think what makes me a good teacher is my passion. I look at each lesson like somewhat of a puzzle. It’s a multi-step process, I diagnose ball flight and impact, and understand what the club is doing to the ball to make it fly a certain way. Then I have to understand what the student is doing to the club to make it influence the ball. The most important and trickiest part is to determine 16

2020 LOOK AHEAD

Director of Golf Course Maintenance
BERKELEY HALL GOLF
e are looking forward to a successful and busy 2020 season, starting with enhancements to the South Course and to North Course practice area and native beds. Once warmer temperatures arrive, re-grassing on the South Course fairway will begin in May. The scope of work includes the removal of two-inches of existing fairway playing surface, which will be replaced with two-inches of sand, followed by installation of Celebration Bermuda grass sprigs. In conjunction with re-grassing, installation of the “Better Billy Bunker” drainage system on South Course fairway bunkers will complete the final phase of bunker renovation on both courses. In September, the North-South Challenge will mark the re-opening of the South Course. In addition to re-grassing, the practice putting green at the Fazio Room will also be renovated in 2020. This will enlarge the putting green by 3,200 square feet and reduce the current amount of slope. This will result in a larger and more level putting surface creating more practice area and hole locations for members and lessons. Finally, the North Course will begin to implement a long-term native bed restoration project. This will include removal of existing plant material that has become invasive. Our team will install a variety of sterile plants to avoid invasive growth in the future. Ornamental grasses such as Muhly Grass, and Miscanthus will be used along with Fan palms, and Dianella plants. The use of these plants will improve the golfing 18

experience and assist maintenance in maintaining native beds more consistently. Annual Bluegrass (Poa Annua) Over the past two years we have seen an increase in annual bluegrass population on the courses during the winter and spring golf seasons. Annual bluegrass is a common winter weed throughout the Southeast region that can grow in a range of environments, which makes it increasingly difficult to control. The seeds germinate multiple times in a growing season, and this weed is a resilient one which can survive when defoliated or trampled. With the lack of density in our Tifsport Bermuda fairways during the winter, annual bluegrass does not see a lot of competition from our turf. All these characteristics and factors make chemical control the primary mode of management. According to the USGA, reports of herbicide resistance in annual bluegrass are greater than any other weed species commonly found in turfgrass. The resistance has become such an issue, a team of 16 university scientists have embarked on a $5.6 million dollar project, funded by the USDA to limit the impact of annual bluegrass in athletic, golf, lawn and turf sod farms. In an effort to avoid resistance, the Berkeley Hall agronomy staff rotates applications of herbicides with different modes of actions and active ingredients; however, resistance is still occurring in some areas on both golf courses. We have seen improvement from last year’s bluegrass development, due to an
accurate timing of pre-emergent herbicide (no rain delays) and an increased rate of herbicide on the first initial application. A second pre-emergent application will be applied this month. While a few pockets of annual blue grass have occurred, it is being controlled with a combination of post emergent herbicide and manual weed removal. 2019 in Review As we look back on 2019, we’d like to recap our accomplishments including the successful completion of the Better Billy Bunker renovation on the North Course fairway; raised bunker floors for easier entry and exit; documented golf course operational standards; 95 percent of Juniper removal completed with 50 percent of new plant material in place; third year of North Course fairway sand topdressing was completed, with the application of a half-inch, totaling one inch over the past three years. Taken together, these smart practices highlight our commitment to remain one of the premier private golf communities in the Southeast.

We had a great turnout and lots of fun, with over 90 participants at Berkeley Hall’s annual Turkey Trot 5K, hosted by the Spa and Fitness Center on Thanksgiving Day. Congratulations to 13-year-old TJ Rzasa, who took First Prize for male “Overall Runner” with a time of 20:15. As members Joel and Pat Parrish’s grandson, he has been a frequent participant in Berkeley Hall 5Ks, and TJ was also the “Overall Runner” in our 2019 Fourth of July Firecracker 5K! Lizzie Brunick, our Turkey Trot female “Overall Runner,” came in fast as well at 25:18. And that is particularly fitting, as the granddaughter of Berkeley Hall members David and Petie DeBruyne. It was actually David
Sabrina Robers, Winner Female Runner 20-29
Jason Slocum, Winner Male Runner 30-39
who came up with the original idea to host a Turkey Trot at the Club, after attending a Turkey Trot on Hilton Head Island with our Spa & Fitness Director Derek Lemire back in 2003. “My initial goal was to start something to create memories with family and friends. I wanted to start a tradition that people remembered and looked forward to. I believe that after all these years, we have done that!” – Derek Lemire, Spa & Fitness Center Director So, coming full circle is what our Turkey Trot is all about. As one of the Club’s most popular events, from the youngest participants to our most mature, there’s a place for everyone. See final results below:
