FROM THE CLUBHOUSE members and look forward to welcoming more, with new spec homes slated to start in the first quarter, and more under review. New families and enhanced amenities keep us vibrant and growing and we wouldn’t have it any other way, as we draw closer to 500 homes, and remain an intentionally smaller, welcoming community.

As we ring in the New Year, it’s remarkable to see how much we’ve accomplished together at Berkeley Hall. Being named among the highly prestigious Platinum Clubs of the World list is truly an honor, and reflects well on our Club, our Membership, and the overall Berkeley Experience. 2024 promises to be a monumental year, as we bring forward club projects that have been years in the making, with great input by committees and our management team. Updates to the Tap Room, Berkeley Room, Men’s Locker Room, Kitchen renovations, and the North Course renovation slated for summer, will further elevate our coastal lifestyle and exceptional golf experience. I’m sure our 2024 Welcome Back Party will be among the best in the 20+ year history of BHC, as Members enjoy all our enhanced amenities. The beauty in our midst is one of the things we cherish most, and no one captures our Lowcountry setting better than member/photographer Elizabeth Angelone, whose work graces this cover. You can see more on pages 6-7. At Berkeley Hall, our momentum keeps building. We’ve welcomed many new 2

ur new year issue ushers in the beauty of our tranquil surroundings anew. Lush greens and golden marshes, with luminous color palettes of fluttering wings and widespread arcs against azure skies. Celebrating the splendor of our Lowcountry setting has become a Berkeley Hall Experience tradition, as Elizabeth Angelone, member/ photographer captures these exquisite views of our wildlife and nature.

See more of her images online at ElizabethAngelonePhotography.com or on Instagram at elizabeth_angelone_photography.

Roseate Spoonbills

Brilliant hues adorn the gorgeous roseate spoonbill gracing our special New Year cover. Nestled in an embrace of greenery, she is right at home and Elizabeth’s artistry brings us in for a closer look. Her work casts an intimate view of our “local life” and we are forever grateful. Wading through still waters and heading home across golden skies, a snowy egret ends the day with a sweeping swath, a graceful dance of color and light that captures us always. While morning surveys aloft in tree branches set the day’s course, an Ibis gently wades in solitude, and a pair of “spoonies” linger on the banks for a moment together, in quiet contemplation.

“Boy’s Life ” by Robert McCammon It's 1964, and both Zephyr, Alabama, and aspiring 12-year-old writer Cory Meckenson, are about to grow up from the idyll of small-town America. It's on his dad's milkman morning route that Cory begins to come of age, as he and his dad witness the sinking of a car carrying a brutally murdered man. Who was the man? Who killed him and sank the car? These questions cast a shadow over the next year, brimming with earthly wonders, a raging flood, a shootout, a showdown with bullies, but also with magical wonders. Strongly echoing the childhood elegies of King and Bradbury and every bit their equal. Review: Kirkus Reviews

“Hang the Moon” by Jeanette Walls There’s never a dull moment in “Hang the Moon,” set in Prohibition-era Virginia. Walls became a fixture on the bestseller list with her blockbuster memoir, “The Glass Castle.” Her latest novel centers on a bootleg liquor operation run in post-World War I Virginia by Sallie Kincaid, who, like Walls, is the spunky daughter of a complicated man and who also learns to shoot as a very young girl. “I favor a long gun over a handgun,” 17-year-old Sallie tells us, heading up to rescue her Aunt Faye from an abusive boyfriend. This is no Chekhov play, there’s a murder at a funeral in the first few pages. Her version of Prohibition-era Virginia seethes with secret love children, spousal murders, and marital arrangements. We had another great turnout for the HAIG at the start of November. A full field took to the course to test their skills against some of the more difficult hole locations out there. Despite the difficult course set up we still had some great scoring across all of the flights and the overall winners were: Men: Ian Harrison & Wendell Haight

We had three great days for the 2023 Club Challenge back at the start of December. This is always a great way to end the tournament season and we had 24 teams battle it out for the honors. The Team from Chechessee Creek Club – Duke Delcher, Nick LaRocco, Alan Van Horn & Zac Passaretti – played superbly well for both days and took home the trophy!

his private coastal community on the banks of the Okatie River in the Lowcountry is uniquely suited to bringing Members together through unique golf experiences. Two world-class Tom Fazio courses, a Golf Practice & Learning Center that PGA stars call one of the best in the world, and a community of passionate golfers make this a player’s paradise. The North and South courses—each completely different, and both equally magnificent—are two of the most meticulously maintained layouts in the Southeast. Though the Club has hosted multiple championships, including The Players Amateur and U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship, nothing exemplifies the exceptional golf experience more than its annual Club Challenge. One of a dozen championship contests held for Members each year, the Club Challenge pairs Members with guests from clubs around the country. For Wayne Hoffman and Pat Annessa (pictured right), who played in their 18th Club Challenge in 2023, it’s the highlight of a full golf calendar at Berkeley Hall. Pat built his home in 2006 and invited Wayne to play in the Club Challenge. Wayne enjoyed the experience and the community so much that he and his wife Caitlin moved here in 2011. “Everything about the Club Challenge is over the top, from the opening night party to the gift bags to the fierce competition to the awards dinner,” says Pat. “By far, it’s the best event we play here, and we play in a lot of them.” Wayne agrees. “The camaraderie and the fun are unbelievable. I tell my wife not to plan anything for the annual December dates we play.” Adds Caitlin, “He even told our kids not to get married on a Club Challenge weekend!” If golf isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other opportunities here. The world-class amenities are worthy of a luxury resort and include exceptional culinary options and social events. For those envisioning an inviting community to call home, you’ll find Berkeley Hall is the welcoming destination you’ve been searching for. And you’ll find it easy to fit in right from the start, on or off the course.

GOLF MAINTENANCE UPDATE

ON THE GREENS: LOOK AHEAD.

A

fter careful consideration and expert consultation, we are excited to announce Tahoma 31 Bermudagrass as the choice for our turf for the 2024 North Course Enhancement Project. The unique climate of the Lowcountry requires a turf that not only survives but thrives when considering our course usage and expectations. Tahoma 31 boasts excellent tolerance to salt, heat and humidity. Its adaptability to our coastal conditions will ensure consistently lush fairways during the growing season and hardy, cold and traffic tolerance during the busy fall, winter, and spring golfing season. Its remarkable resilience makes it a great choice for a golf course that demands durability without compromising playability. Even during the winter months when Bermuda-grass tends to go dormant in some regions, Tahoma 31 maintains its color longer and greens up faster in the spring, providing an aesthetically pleasing and enjoyable playing surface throughout the year.

Tahoma 31 boasts excellent tolerance to salt, heat and humidity. Its adaptability to our coastal conditions will ensure consistently lush fairways during the growing season. 31 Bermuda-grass showcases exceptional recovery and healing properties, allowing our course to rebound quickly from stress, wear, and maintenance activities. This means less downtime for our course and more opportunities for you to enjoy the game. In an era where sustainability is paramount, Tahoma 31 Bermudagrass aligns seamlessly with our eco-friendly goals. Its efficient water usage and drought resistance contribute to our commitment to responsible turf management. It

will also require less inputs than the Tifsport Bermudagrass we will be replacing. Therefore, we’re not just enhancing our course; we’re embracing a greener and more sustainable future. Our decision to transition to Tahoma 31 Bermudagrass is backed by extensive research and the expertise of our dedicated turf management team. Their thorough evaluation and firsthand experience give us confidence in its ability to meet and exceed our expectations for a world-class golfing experience.

Our commitment to a top-tier golfing experience extends to the health of our course. Tahoma JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2024

SPEAKER SERIES

Dr. Charles Bassos, Mike Corey & Fitness Team In the Zone: Purpose, Connect, Activity, Restore Wednesday, Jan 24 | 4-5:30pm | Palmetto Room s we look to longevity and happiness, the concept of wellness and connection are so important,” shares Dr. Charles Bassos, clinical psychologist, and BHC member. In our next Wellness Series, he introduces us to being ‘In the Zone.’ “Most people find being in the zone very pleasant and fulfilling, where your activity, your purpose, and your connection all come together. You’re no longer trying to play a sport, exercise, make friends, it becomes effortless. And, if a community can do that, if loving life can become as important as living life, that is the source of a longer, healthier life.”

longtime BHC member of 22 years, along with his wife Zoe.

As Fitness Center offerings expand into broader areas of wellness, it occurred to him that while physical fitness improves emotional and mental health, it’s also true that emotional and mental health improve physical health.

“Thinking about the zone already in place at BHC, we started to understand that Blue Zones were not so much places, as a state of mind and community lifestyle."

Many of us are familiar with the Blue Zone: five places around the world where people enjoy increased longevity of 100+ years.

Shared characteristics include active lifestyles, restoration, a sense of purpose - renewed as you age and circumstances change, and human connection. Thinking about the zone already in place at BHC, we started to understand that Blue Zones were not so much places, as a state of mind and community lifestyle. In this session, Jessica Mantz will share opportunities we offer you, within our community, to be in the zone. Mike Corey will speak about purpose and changes a person might make. Dr. Bassos will talk about the connection to others and to yourself, and how to get ‘into the zone.’ And our fitness team will share ways to restore mental and physical energy so you can get into and maintain the zone. ‘In the Zone’ as a philosophy continues to drive us forward,” adds Jessica. “As a roadmap to enhanced health and wellness.”

Mike Corey - Purpose

Jessica Mantz - Activity

“Purpose is what gets you excited about life, gets you out of bed in the morning,” says Mike Corey. This factors in the thought that people must learn and constantly renew their purpose as they age and as their circumstances change.

"Creating a rhythm of activity that sustains the ups and downs of life is essential. That encompasses everything from fitness classes to cooking, volunteering and friendship gatherings such as book clubs, card games, and other social activities," says Jessica.

As a senior partner with The Corey Search Group, Mike knows a bit about this, with a special skill for finding just the right person, for the right position, across many industries. Mike, a recruiting industry leader with over 50 years of experience in executive search, has recruited over 3,000 executives and consultants worldwide. Here, he speaks to committing to the blue zone philosophy, and the process which leads to taking new paths and finding your purpose.

Dr. Charles BassosConnect “Loneliness and isolation are major contributors to poor health and illness. Human connection is the antidote,” says Dr. Charles Bassos. Dr. Charles Bassos shares what he’s learned about the complexities of connection and relationship and how “in the zone“ connection can enable healthy people to be in healthy community with each other. Knowing ourselves helps us function as a community, maintaining authentic relationships and supporting each other through good times and bad. Through connecting with others, we can get more connected to ourselves and experience greater satisfaction and fulfillment. The personal satisfaction and fulfillment of individuals goes hand-in-hand with a happier, healthier community and vice versa. Through the multitude of activities and programs available at Berkeley Hall, the goal is to foster a mindset that results in healthier community and the greater personal satisfaction we all desire. This is the mindset that blue zone researchers saw as an important feature of good health and longevity.

Jessica Mantz, Director of Fitness Operations, is wellversed in all aspects of wellness. With over 20 years of experience in the health and wellness industry, her emphasis is on cohesively building our offerings, including our Wellness Series. Getting out of the box, and expanding our thoughts on what activity can be in our lives, that is meaningful to you and brings well-being. As a Fitness team, we are dedicated to developing activities that complement each other and help bring In-the-Zone purpose to all we do.

Dr. Chris Martinelli Restore Without restoration, your circle is incomplete. If you don’t take time for restoration, the other pieces will not reach their full potential. Restore incorporates the components of sleep, nutrition, gentle movement and mindfulness. As owner of Next Level Physical Therapy and Sports Performance Services, having Chris on our Wellness team offers members an added amenity. With a bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology and doctorate in physical therapy, he possesses a deep understanding of the musculoskeletal system and is skilled in developing personalized treatment plans. Chris focuses on the best aspects of restoration with credentials dedicated to enhancing health and longevity through exercise physiology, physical therapy and movement. Coming full circle is the awareness of self, where purpose, connection, activity, and restoration are well-balanced.
