TOP SUMMER ROSÉS
MOTHER’S DAY BRUNCH
NORTH COURSE LOOK AHEAD
may/june 2024
As late spring rolls into early summer, days stretch longer and our easy Lowcountry lifestyle seems to slow just a bit. With more time to enjoy the beauty of our natural surroundings, and evenings by the water or on our Verandah, it’s easy to toast to the good life at Berkeley Hall!
Gorgeous weather beckons us outside to enjoy golf and we’re looking forward to the Mixed Member-Guest, followed by the Club Championships. In this issue, we take a look at Women’s Golf and Berkeley Hall’s long history in the Lowcountry.
BHC’s spectacular Grand Fourth of July Celebration is a well-loved Club tradition!
Thursday, July 4th kicks off a great weekend of events for you and your families with our morning Firecracker 5k | Fun Run and Cart Parade, and that evening’s Grand Celebration and Fireworks Showcase!
Check out our full line-up –on pages 8-9.
We’ve also been able to make a real difference in the greater community we
call home through our Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation. Our recent BHCF Ladies Luncheon was a wonderful success, and will go a long way in making a real difference for many of our Bluffton-area neighbors and non-profits who need it most.
Around the Club, we’re embarking on slated summer projects, with renovations in the Tap Room, Men’s Locker Room and Berkeley Room, as well as the North Course regrassing. You can learn more about that in Adam Miller’s Agronomy feature showcasing this exciting project. As we approach summer, it’s easy to stay cool around the pool, with poolside drinks and casual dining gearing up for Memorial Day weekend!
In national news, Executive Golfer readers got a close-up look at Lowcountry Living with a great feature on BHC members Blythe and Terry Merrifield and what led them to Berkeley Hall for their ‘forever home.’
Overall momentum at the Club continues with ongoing home builds, new plans in ARB, and a growing number of discovery visitors who are drawn to our welcoming community. We have a wonderful story to tell, and it’s a great one to share with your family and friends.
As the sunshine glimmers on our Lowcountry waters, nature’s lush green hues surround us. Let’s get out and enjoy it!

Executive Golfer features the Merrifields
Executive Golfer magazine's spring issue showcases Berkeley Hall members Blythe and Terry Merrifield, and what led them to Berkeley Hall!
Five years ago, Terry Merrifield created a file on his iPad simply labeled ‘Next.’ “I was a man on a mission to find the perfect location for our forever home,” said Terry. “While Terry is the golfer, tennis is my game,” shares Blythe. “And as a professional singer, I really felt at home once I met a fellow member who helped connect me to the music world here.”
“All of us are looking for contentment and fulfillment in life and we’ve been able to find that. The rich lifestyle afforded to us at Berkeley makes us blessed to be here.”

“Trouble the Water” by Rebecca Bruff
Inspired by a true story, Trouble the Water is about risking everything for freedom. Born a slave, Robert Smalls commandeered a Confederate arms ship from the Charleston harbor, and with the woman he loved and a small crew of other slaves, delivered it to the Union Navy. After the war ended, Smalls was able to purchase the house in which he and his mother had been enslaved, and he became one of America’s first black legislators. His courage, thirst for knowledge, and compassion ultimately changed the lives of untold others, including making SC the first state to legislate public education for all.

“How the Penguins Saved Veronica” by Hazel Prior
A curmudgeonly but charming old woman, her estranged grandson, and a colony of penguins proves it’s never too late to be the person you want to be.
Eighty-five-year-old Veronica McCreedy is estranged from her family and wants a worthwhile cause to leave her fortune to. When she sees a documentary about penguins being studied in Antarctica, she tells the scientists she’s coming. Then, she convinces them to rescue an orphaned baby penguin that quickly becomes part of life at the base.
Her grandson, Patrick, comes to Antarctica to make one last attempt to get to know his grandmother. Together, Veronica, Patrick, and the scientists learn what family, love, and connection are all about.

Wine Notes from Somm Elijah
This is the time of year when Wine Country experiences “bud break.” The first signs of what the vineyard’s cycle will look like, and a vulnerable time for inclement weather to strip the buds from vines, causing a smaller yield. It’s also a time filled with promise, hope and excitement. For winemakers and sommeliers, it’s what makes life so fascinating, and for wine lovers – the ultimate enjoyment!
Peak time at most wineries, as they bottle the rosés and whites to get to market for summer. Out comes the packaging and racking. Blends are already established, labels and bottles approved.
There is something so satisfying about having wine in bottle that was once a grape you’ve worked with.
“fining” processes done in the winery to polish the wine before bottling. Here, Elijah draws upon his winemaking experience with Holloran Vineyards & Wines in Oregon. With his background in science and affinity for learning, it was there he honed his love for winemaking over five harvests.

HOLE-IN-ONE UPDATE
BHC WOMEN’S GOLF: WE’VE GOT GAME!
Women’s golf has game in the Lowcountry, and Berkeley Hall Club has quite a long history when it comes to competitive players.
Berkeley Hall has long been active in Lowcountry Team Play Association matches. Over the years, our women earned several Division wins: Division 1 (2017, 2023); Division 3 (2017); Division 4 (2007, 2009, 2013), and our newest Division 6 win (2024).
Women's golf has never been
than it is today.
– CAROL DULUDE
BHC HISTORY:
BHC founding member Marian Green spearheaded our entry into the Lowcountry Team Play Association in 2004. Initially, we had one team, and according to original team member Zoe Bassos, it was challenging to fill the roster each year!
Things have certainly changed – over the years we added a second team, forming Division 1-single-digit golfers (2023 overall champions) and Division 3-golfers with handicap indexes in the low teens.
This year, due to increased demand, Carol Dulude, Berkeley Hall Head Captain, was able to secure a third team for the 2024 season. All new teams entered into Division 6.

HEAD TEAM CAPTAIN
Our new division enabled players with handicaps in the mid to high teens to play competitively. Heather Goldberg was team captain for Division 6, and led the team of Abby Henke, Lydia Vaughan, Sue Mentis, Lin Barnett, Trish Beers, Cynthia Oler, Whitney Gelrod, Betsi Lynch, Sharon Jones, Terri Savoury, Jill Appel, Lise Shanahan, Annie Robinson and Elaine Spear, to victory! Division 6 won their season and will move to Division 5 next year.
The Lowcountry Team Play Assoc. was established in 1982, to provide women an opportunity to engage in organized match play competition. Currently, women from 19 clubs participate in a two-month season, February-March. The league has grown to include six divisions, with seven teams in each.
Matches are played with six players from each club. Two players compete against their opponent club team, match play, best ball of two, 18 holes, NO STROKES. At the end of the season, the team with the most points wins the title and moves up a division.
Women who enjoy and play competitive golf at Berkeley Hall are welcome to join the BHC roster/team. For more details, contact the Golf Shop at 843.815.8444.

ON THE GREENS: NORTH COURSE LOOK AHEAD
e are fast approaching the North Course regrass project. All the major components are in place, as we complete the last details. The weather has been warming up nicely and the course is waking up. By the time this issue goes to print, we will be very close to the first spray on the North Course that will begin the process of killing the tifsport bermudagrass.
Planning for the North Course regrass dates to a 2015 visit from the USGA after an extremely wet year. A recommendation was made for drainage and the Club moved forward with a major project. In subsequent years, as the tifsport fairways aged and the course was further from its construction, we embarked on more conversations about converting to newer varieties of bermudagrass.
When I arrived in 2021, Berkeley Hall had just finished the regrass of the South Course fairways and was moving forward on the North Course regrass scheduled for 2022. I asked for more time as I wanted to work on making the drainage system more efficient through implementing different cultural practices and changing the physical properties of the soil. With the support of the Grass & Greens Committee and the Board, we postponed the North Course regrass until 2025. While ambitious, this would give us more time to evaluate all infrastructure on both golf courses and make informed decisions moving forward. At that time we decided to overseed the tifsport, to

improve conditions in winter when conditions would deteriorate, knowing the risk of a poor transition.
After last summer’s poor transition, we felt enough time had passed and the recommendation to move the regrass to 2024 was the right decision. The Agronomy team also evaluated and tested the golf course infrastructure on the North Course, and found the irrigation system and greens to be in good shape, and that replacing or renovating would be an unnecessary endeavor.
Tom Fazio’s team consulted with us on three occasions and found Berkeley Hall to be a wonderful presentation of golf, with no major changes needed. Their recommendation was that we focus on cultural practices, infrastructure improvements, and improved turf environments. Mr. Fazio visited in the summer of 2023, and was supportive of the regrass, bunker modifications, and native area improvements to lessen the maintenance burden.
We also consulted with the USGA and other leading industry experts. All work will be completed by a certified golf course builder, to the highest standards of the Golf Course Builders Association of America.
With that, we developed the 2024 North Course regrass project which focuses on regrassing the fairways to a new and improved bermudagrass variety. This will recapture lost square footage of tee space needed with our current tee sheet pressure; provide improved bunker infrastructure focusing on limiting plugged balls and creating more consistent lies; and reducing lost balls in playable areas, unsightly native beds, and pine straw. We will also improve growing environments with select tree removals, canopy thinning, and tree trimming to bring more sunlight to our most difficult fairways.
All these projects were part of the Capital Reserve Fund replacement program. In conjunction with past infrastructure and future cultural routine maintenance, focused on effective cultural practices and best management practices, the North Course will be set up for success for years to come.
We look forward to a successful North Course closure this summer and welcoming you back to a refreshed and reinvigorated golf course. Thank you for your support, and we’ll see you on the greens!
