Lowcountry Oyster Roast Thanksgiving Feast Grand Tree Lighting a vegas New Year's eve

FROM THE CLUBHOUSE Holidays are like memories we carry with us, even as we’re creating new ones. For many of our newer members, these late autumn months as we turn towards winter in the Lowcountry are newly different. The crisp, cool days that often end around firepits, the fall rite of our annual Lowcountry Oyster Roast that kicks off Thanksgiving weekend, and then we’re into the holiday season with all our favorite BHC traditions. Our annual holiday issue features all these great events and more, with a look at what’s happening around the club, from culinary news to golf and greens, wellness and more. As we transition into the new year, our momentum continues at a brisk pace. We’re drawing closer to 500 homes and as we maintain our intentionally smaller community, we’re fortunate to balance that harmony of growth in such a positive way. A bit of a morning chill and afternoon sunshine, what more can we ask for, especially on the courses? I’m told they’ve never looked better at this time of year.

As one who appreciates new ideas and forward thinking, that’s also what inspires us as a community, here at Berkeley Hall. Some are more intimate, such as our new Sunday small plate dining from the Verandah kitchen, to new offerings at the Halfway Houses, further enhancing our amenities for member enjoyment. Come the new year, the newly enhanced Berkeley Hall member website will launch, as well as our new member app. With a slated mid-January launch date, stay tuned for more details coming your way! Soon, we’ll be celebrating fall’s bounty with our annual Thanksgiving festivities, decking the halls and enjoying our beloved traditions BHC-style. Of course, it’s our wonderful BHC team that makes all these events possible, as featured below at our recent Charity Cup event. As we gather for the holidays, I’m reminded how thankful I am to be part of such a giving and caring community. I look forward to celebrating the best of the season with all of you!

NOV 6 | 3PM THE VERANDAH “The German Wife” by Kelly Rimmer The New York Times bestselling author of The Warsaw Orphan returns with a gripping novel inspired by the true story of a secret U.S. intelligence program that employed former Nazis after WWII. Berlin, 1930 – When a wave of change sweeps a radical political party to power, Sofie von Meyer Rhodes’ academic husband benefits from the ambitions of its newly elected chancellor. Although Sofie and Jürgen do not share the views of Hitler’s Germany, Sofie watches helplessly, as her beloved Berlin begins to transform, forcing her to consider what they must sacrifice morally. Twenty years later, Jürgen is one of many German scientists offered pardons, and taken to America to work for its fledgling space program. GOLF MAINTENANCE UPDATE

ON THE GREENS

s we head toward the holiday season, mild temperatures and cooler days usher in some great playing time on our courses. Days are growing shorter, grass growth has begun to slow and our focus as we head into the winter months will be putting out preemergent applications for that pesky poa annua. Our agronomy team now turns toward planning for the 2024 re-grass and closure of the North Course. We recently partnered with the USGA to collect GPS data on the course. Thank you to all our members who participated in this endeavor. This data will help guide our decisions to improve sustainability, pace of play, course design, traffic management, and improve your on-course experiences in the future. While we all love the Club’s core golf philosophy, it also creates a challenge in terms of re-grass materials, equipment, and debris. With many of the major decisions made, we’ll now refine the logistics and details that are paramount for our success. Another important process we go through this time of year is reflection. What part of our programs worked, what did not, and how do we get

better moving forward. We had great conditions in Winter and Spring 2023, followed by a very successful South Closure which included transitioning from ryegrass overseed and the

The North Course transition proved not to be the best scenario. The cool spring, strong ryegrass stand, and weak tifsport made for a difficult closure in July and our aggressive greens aeration took longer to heal than expected. Fortunately, as anticipated, we are now seeing the benefit of those processes with reduced disease pressure and better rooting. Our overseed process went exceedingly well in September and we were able to complete quite a bit of cart path and bunker work, along with several small projects, during those closures. be very aggressive with our aeration schedule and that work has paid off on the greens, tees, fairways, and roughs. Moving forward we should be able to back off and take a milder approach on a yearly basis. These next few months our agronomy team will be quite productive, with mowing, course setup, and project planning. It is a welcome change after our busy summer maintenance season! As we round out the year, we’ll be communicating more about the upcoming 2024 North Course closure. Thank you for your continued support as we endeavor to provide the premier golf experience our membership enjoys.
