MAKING A DIFFERENCE: CHARITY CUP BACK HOME AT BHC MEMBER DREAM HOMES FALL FEST

FROM THE CLUBHOUSE As we move into the fall season, there are many things we can be thankful for and some different ways that Berkeley Hall can build on the momentum that golf and private communities have gained throughout the country, and right here at home in Berkeley Hall. Our desirability has seen an increased year of activity on property, and our ARB has been extremely busy as we head toward the most homes under construction we’ve seen in over a decade. (Read some of our member dream home stories on page 11). Most importantly, building our community is the most effective way to ensure the well-being of Berkeley Hall as we move forward. As members, the biggest impact to our Club’s future is you – and we thank you for the momentum and new referrals

you bring to our community. It’s exciting to see the energy new members add to our Club, and those who already have friends here are that much more likely to tell friends about their great experience. Not only do we all share in this exciting growth, additional members ensure a well-funded capital reserve fund and afford us the ease and ability to enhance the overall member experience for us all. So, I propose a challenge – that all members refer one friend or colleague to our Membership Director, Alex Madeiros. Together, we can ensure that our club continues to thrive. The beauty of Berkeley Hall’s setting and the ease to create new friendships draws members from across the country. Join us in this opportunity to welcome new members and families to enjoy all the Club has to offer.

HURRICANE SEASON – KEEPING YOU INFORMED While skies are blue and temperatures mild, we are in the midst of hurricane season, which runs through the end of November. The peak months for activity are August and September. As COVID-19 infections are still present in our and neighboring communities, it is more important than ever to plan ahead for a hurricane evacuation. Look for updates on weather activity from Berkeley Hall. We will keep members informed of any severe weather conditions via e-communications, member website updates, member text and telephone hotline, and through our social media channels. If you’re not already following us on Facebook and Twitter, simply go to the main page of our website and click on the icons located at the bottom of the main page at BerkeleyHallClub.com.

Berkeley Hall members are not the only ones who find Berkeley Hall their sanctuary during this time. Those with young adults impacted by COVID-19 have also welcomed their children back home. In this feature, a few new-found residents share their stories with us and their hopes for the future. STEPHEN STECKEL

Stephen Steckel, son of member Mike Pence and Bernadette Steckel, is a 27-year-old architect who graduated from Ohio State University. Stephen works for the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) firm in Manhattan, NY, and left the city in March during the height of the pandemic that ravaged the city. Stephen will be pursuing a master’s degree this fall studying real estate development at Columbia University.

BHC: How You'll Pursue Your Dreams?

SS: When the pandemic started having serious impacts on NYC in early March, I had a bit of a panic moment, imagining I would be stuck in my apartment for months. I bought a flight to come home to Berkeley Hall and working from home has been amazing because 4

BHC: Fun, Unexpected Story about Your Parents You Can Share. SS: They got married in Las Vegas and they are still together so I guess you could say they beat the odds! BHC: What You’ve Learned? SS: I'm not as good at golf as I thought, but Kieran is helping me fix that. SS: My goals are constantly evolving so I am just taking it one day at a time. In 2012, my goal was to graduate from OSU, in 2016 it was to get a good job, and today it's to earn my masters. By next year I’m sure I’ll have a list of new things I want to accomplish.

at BHC with parents Dan and Kimberly Thorn. Not one to stay still, he has kept busy in the community by helping members with dog-walking and home-sitting. However, he is ready to embark on his career and move onto his next chapter in life. Committed to the environment, Derek’s place in the Lowcountry is the ideal location to pursue his field of coastal management, he is just waiting to get started. BHC: How Have You Navigated COVID-19?

DEREK THORN Derek Thorn, a 2020 college graduate, earned a degree in Marine Science specializing in marine geology and coastal management. Now, with his career onhold due to the Coronavirus, he’s here

BHC: How Have You Navigated COVID-19? BN: COVID has been a terrible event in this country and globally, but it has given me, as well as many others, the chance to slow down. The pandemic derailed our ability to compete and play golf which is our livelihood, yet it

made me realize I needed a breather and some time spent with family. When it was time to get back to work, I was more than ready but I really enjoyed having some time off to recharge the batteries a little. BHC: Fun Story about Your Parents: BN: My parents are incredibly motivating and pushed me to always be my best which drives me to always be better. During college they didn’t miss a tournament. I couldn’t do what I do without them. BHC: What You’ve Learned? BN: How important it is to value your time. This pandemic, although horrible, has taught me a lot. We definitely have to be more cautious and maintain safety, but at the same time try to make the most of this time.

BHC: Fun, Unexpected Story about Your Parents You Can Share. DT: My parents have lived here for four years, they still don’t know how to play golf well, but they know a lot about navigating the salt marsh in a kayak! BHC: What You’ve Learned? DT: Since graduating college and now looking for a job, learning how to be an adult is very challenging. However, living in Berkeley Hall has made the transition pretty easy and enjoyable. BHC: How You'll Pursue Your Dreams? DT: I am pursuing my dreams by actively looking for jobs online, staying connected with peers and mentors, and studying for the GRE to perhaps go to grad school in the upcoming future.

BRYSON NIMMER

Bryson Nimmer has made a name for himself in the golf world, at Clemson University where he won four tournaments in his final season, the most in a season in Clemson history we might add, and here at Berkeley Hall for his outstanding performance in The Players Amateur. The son of Tony and Patsy Nimmer, Bryson graduated in 2019 with a management degree, and goes down in Clemson history along with his father Tony as the first father-son All-ACC duo in Clemson men’s golf history!

DT: At first, it was difficult not being able to return to Eckerd College to finish my senior year with friends. Then, we began video chatting and we even video-chatted during our virtual graduation and celebrated together. I wasn’t planning on returning home, until my summer internship with the UGA Skidaway Institute of Oceanography was canceled due to COVID. I’ve since met a few people at BHC around my age and we’ve enjoyed kayaking, golfing,

and swimming. Also, through word of mouth, members learned I am currently dog walking, house-sitting, and helping neighbors in need.

BHC: How You'll Pursue Your Dreams? BN: Continue to work to be the best player I can be and achieve my goals. I’m lucky enough to do what I love and never take that for granted! (at the time of this article, Bryson had just won his last two golf events, as he continues his quest towards the PGA Tour.) SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2020

Our recently completed “Our Stories” member videos tell the Berkeley Hall story in a special way in the voices of our members, featuring Deirdre and Jim McCarthy, Gretchen and Tim Hunter, and Lynn and Henry Marini.

Lynn & Henry

In this issue, we wanted to share their dream home stories and highlight the ease our members have found when it comes to building and beginning their new chapters here at Berkeley Hall. To see their stories in full, go to our website berkeleyhallclub.com and view Our Stories videos under the My Club tab.

Here, Lynn and Henry Marini share their dream home experience and the story of how they fell in love with Berkeley Hall. "We actually got married here, it started out as our wedding venue... We just came and we never left! We could really see ourselves here." - Lynn Marini

Tim & Gretchen

Jim & Deirdre

"The first time Gretchen and I drove through the gates and saw the beautiful infinity pool, the fountain lit at night and the gardens, it was just a magical kind of moment.

"We made several trips down here during the course of six months or so, and we visited different communities, but we ultimately fell in love with Berkeley Hall."

When we saw this lot and knew it had water and marsh views, we wanted to create a feeling as you were walking through the door that you could feel and almost touch that water and the marshes."

- Jim McCarthy

- Tim Hunter

"Finding the lot was the first piece of the puzzle, the second was the builder, and it couldn't have been a more seamless process. There are literally days we say, let's not do anything, and we'll sit in our backyard, have a glass of wine and watch the sunset. I truly feel like I live on vacation every day!"

"We absolutely love the area. We love how casual it is and how we can enjoy every aspect of the outdoors with our family - the sunsets, the dolphins, kayaking, running, and getting the chance to enjoy nature...and new friendships have been happening constantly."

- Deirdre McCarthy

- Gretchen Hunter

"What really had us fall in love with this place, is when we fell in love at our wedding reception and said 'Why continue to wait? Let's just pick a time,' and within a year or so we were here, and we absolutely love the decision we made!" - Henry Marini As you can see, the beauty of Berkeley Hall’s setting, as well as the ease to create new friendships, draws members from across the country to experience all the Club has to offer. We’ve seen a lot of momentum this year, and many new members - Please join us in welcoming them!

“A Woman of No Importance” by Sonia Purnell Sept 7 | Ladies Locker Room | 3pm A New York Times Bestseller. In 1942, the Gestapo sent out an urgent transmission: “She is the most dangerous of all Allied spies. We must find and destroy her.” The target in their sights was Virginia Hall, a Baltimore socialite who talked her way into Special Operations Executive to become the first Allied woman deployed behind enemy lines. Sonia Purnell has uncovered the full secret life of Virginia Hall, an astounding story of heroism, spycraft, resistance, and personal triumph, in this breathtaking story of how one woman’s fierce persistence helped win the war. Review: Penguin/Random House “A Piece of the World” by Christina Baker Kline Oct 5 | Ladies Locker Room | 3pm From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Orphan Train, a stunning novel of friendship, passion and art, inspired by Andrew Wyeth’s iconic painting Christina’s World. To Christina Olson, the entire world was her family’s remote farm in the coastal town of Cushing, Maine. Incapacitated by illness, for over twenty years she was host and inspiration for Wyeth, and subject of one of the bestknown American paintings of the twentieth century. A Piece of the World is a story about the burdens and blessings of family history, and how artist and muse can forge a new and timeless legacy. Review: Goodreads

RUSSELL KIRK / USGA PHOTO Berkeley Hall North Course #11

Having postponed the 2020 US Women’s Mid-Amateur, the USGA has asked us to host in 2021 and we have accepted the Championship for September 23-30. This is a great opportunity for us to show off Berkeley Hall to some of the top amateur golfers around the world.

The opportunity to host some of the most talented amateur players in the world is something we have been preparing for, and we’re glad it will still be able to come to fruition. After this challenging year, the 2021 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur is something we will all look forward to more than ever.

We are fortunate we were able to push back a year with the championship, and with both courses open, member play can continue throughout the event. As the year progresses, we will once again offer volunteer opportunities to members.

BERKELEY-8: BUILDS ON OP 36 PROGRAM Want to see your scores drop? Members who completed Operation 36 will tell you that focusing on scoring and the on-course experience makes a big difference. Now that concept builds on its success with the new Berkeley-8 program – focusing on sharpening your scoring game, mindset and being efficient and confident from 100 yards and in. The Berkeley 8-week program also covers Driver and Full Swing to increase your distance and ball striking abilities – to lower your scores by at least 8 shots! With a maximum of 8 participants, the curriculum is fun, challenging and social. The best part is that everyone will get out and enjoy the Berkeley Hall courses. The focus is on lowering your scores through improving your short game, mindset and purposeful practice. We start at 25 yards off the green. Once you master skills necessary to shoot 36, you move back to 50 yards, then 100 yards, then 150 yards. Each level peels the onion back a little more as it relates to the fundamentals of golf.

SOUTH COURSE REGRASSING

he October opening of the South Course on October 3rd promises an exceptional playing experience for this year’s North- South Challenge.

The North Course performed very well during our challenging summer weather and increased activity on the course. A high level of agronomy practices employed by our team helped the transition go even more smoothly than anticipated. The South Course re-grassing that began May 4th has been highly successful as you can see from the numbers below. By the Numbers: During the project, a total of 23,000 tons of clay and sand were removed and installed on fairways and greens surrounds; 27,000 bushels of Celebration Bermuda sprigs were planted; Seven acres of Bermuda sod installed; One-acre of TifGrand Bermuda installed on collars of greens; Two-acres of TifTuff Bermuda sod in conjunction with sand installed on enter and exit areas, and 2,500 feet of

drainage installed. In addition, 40 pine trees were removed, and a 50-foot section of cart path replaced.

The South Course re-grassing that began May 4th has been highly successful.

The removal of clay soils in the fairways and greens surrounds were replaced with sand to create a healthier root zone for turf and to provide a firmer and dryer playing surface. In addition, the installation of sand and TifTuff sod on the enter and exit areas will allow access to the fairways following rain events during the non-growing season. Whereas removal of select pine trees will eliminate shade during the fall and winter months to prevent turf decline.

The new fairway turf has not yet developed a dense layer of rhizomes and stolon roots, this typically occurs during the second growing season. Please be diligent in filling divots and obeying cart signs to protect the new turf during its first fall and winter season Aggressive aeration and vertical mowing to greens and tees were performed to promote healthy turf and reduce grain on the putting surface. Overall, the putting surface received 25 vertical mowing applications throughout the summer. We think you'll find the South Course regrassing to be a long-term investment that will prepare the greens for an exceptional playing surface as we enter the fall season.

FRESH LEMONADE

Equipment Manager

Many of you share our appreciation for Berkeley Hall's exceptional community grounds and credit the great work of our talented crew, much of which relies on the skills of Eric Antman, Berkeley Hall's Equipment Manager. "We wanted to shine the spotlight on Eric's highly skilled expertise and extraordinary finesse when it comes to all things mechanical," said Chris Young, Director of Golf Course Maintenance, which also incorporates Community Grounds. Eric brings his more than 30 years of experience to his work on Berkeley Hall Club grounds equipment. When he's not working, he enjoys family time with his wife Lori and the apple of his eye, 16-year-old daughter Lexi (shown here). FUN FACTS ABOUT ERIC: Originally from Chicago, he previously served as a technician for John Deere & Company and Jacobsen Manufacturing. Eric used to build and race cars at Talladega Superspeedway, NASCAR's biggest track, and other speedways. Owns a 1967 Mustang (of course). Next time you see Eric on property, you'll know a bit more about him, and you'll find him friendly and easy to talk to! 20
