2023 CHARIT y CUP

SIGNATURE CHARITY CUP EVENT NORTH-SOUTH CHALLENGE

WELCOME BACK BHC BLOCK PARTY

Sep/OCT 2023

ith the crisp hints of autumn in the air, we’re excited to usher in our fall season. As we put the longer days of summer behind us, it’s been a good time to reflect on just what we've accomplished here at the Club, and where our vision will take us.

I was reminded the other day of some of our expectations from a few years ago. Back when reaching the goal of 15 home builds and 10 more under review seemed like a pretty big deal. And in some ways, it was. Fast forward to now, and we have 70 homes underway, and more activity ahead.

It takes vision to reach your goals, and ours has been pretty clear – to continue our momentum while maintaining our intentionally smaller, more intimate community.

As we welcome some of our newest members to Berkeley Hall, I was reflecting on just what makes us such an appealing, friendly, and welcoming community. And that, of course, is our Membership. Whether meeting on the course, on the courts, or one of our Club events, our smaller setting makes it easy to get to know one another. And as we look forward, our shared vision allows us to successfully grow and enhance our Club amenities. Last year we held our Verandah Grand Opening, and honestly, it's hard to imagine the Clubhouse without it. It's become such a central gathering spot for us, for dining, casual happy hours and events, it’s really the heart of Club life. Whether it’s longer-view projects such as the Verandah, North Course enhancements, or ongoing maintenance, it takes a good bit of planning and follow-through to successfully innovate throughout the Club. We’re looking forward to a glorious golf season, our courses are ready, and we’ve got a full line-up of popular events, from our North-South Challenge to the Berkeley Classic, and coming up shortly, the 2023 Charity Cup event! (read more on pages 4-5.)

Most of all, I hope everyone had a bit of downtime for some travels and family time, and to get recharged for a busy fall here at the Club.

Bluffton Named Among "10 Prettiest Places To Vacation On East Coast"

And Here We Are! Bluffton is named among the ‟10 Prettiest Places To Vacation On The East Coast” by The Travel! While skies are blue and temperatures mild, we are in the midst of hurricane season, which runs through the end of November. The peak months for activity are August and September.

During this season, it's important to be prepared and plan ahead for a hurricane evacuation. Look for updates on weather activity from Berkeley Hall. We will keep members informed of any severe weather conditions via e-communications, member website updates, Club app, and social media channels.

KRISTA DUNTON NAMED AMONG GOLF MAGAZINE’S TOP 100 TEACHERS IN AMERICA

BHC’s Krista Dunton was recently named among GOLF Magazine’s “Top 100 Teachers in America” biennial list for 2024-2025. Since its inception in 1991, GOLF Magazine’s distinctive ranking has become the industry standard for teaching excellence. Dunton has appeared on the esteemed list since 2011. Candidates for GOLF Magazine’s Top 100 Teachers in America list are selected from nominees submitted by the PGA, LPGA, United States Golf

Teachers Federation, and GOLF Magazine, among others.

A rigorous selection process, applications are screened against baseline criteria recommended by the Top 100 Teachers Credentials Committee and ranked by active and former Top 100 Teachers. Final recommendations are made by a separate Selection Committee, comprised of GOLF Magazine's instruction editors, established Top 100 Teachers and alumni, and invited World

Golf Teachers Hall of Fame members. Recommendations are then submitted to GOLF Magazine

“We applaud Krista's outstanding dedication to the game of golf and the exceptional level of talent she brings to our Berkeley Hall golf community,” said Adam Kushner, General Manager/COO.

The Top 100 list is the only national golf instructor roster that combines outside academic and PGA Professional peer review. In addition, candidates are judged on teaching experience and accomplishments, student portfolio and peer ratings, overall commitment to the growth of the game, as well as volunteerism.

“Cutting for Stone” by Abraham Verghese

A sweeping, emotionally riveting first novel – an enthralling family saga of Africa and America, doctors and patients, exile and home.

Marion and Shiva Stone are twin brothers born of a secret union between a beautiful Indian nun and a British surgeon at a mission hospital in Addis Ababa. Orphaned by their mother’s death in childbirth and their father’s disappearance, bound together by a preternatural connection and a shared fascination with medicine, the twins come of age as Ethiopia hovers on the brink of revolution. Yet it will be love, not politics, their passion for the same woman, that will tear them apart. Review: Goodreads

“Lessons in Chemistry” by Bonnie Garmus

A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: The New York Times, Washington Post, Newsweek

Elizabeth Zott is an ambitious and accomplished scientist and determined to be just that. But as we all know, life has a way of upending plans, and that’s exactly what happens to the inspiring (and at times, hilariously infuriating) Zott.

Cupid’s arrow hits, and the next thing you know she’s a mother and TV cooking star. But in changing the kitchens of 1960’s America, Zott also challenges the status quo and that’s not exactly welcome in some circles. Lessons in Chemistry is a fun read: giddy laughter will bubble up and so will admiration for a strong-willed woman who dares to be herself. Review: Amazon.com

“The German Wife” by Kelly Rimmer

The New York Times bestselling author of The Warsaw Orphan returns with a gripping novel inspired by the true story of a secret U.S. intelligence program that employed former Nazis after WWII.

Berlin, 1930 – When a wave of change sweeps a radical political party to power, Sofie von Meyer Rhodes’ academic husband benefits from the ambitions of its newly elected chancellor. Although Sofie and Jürgen do not share the views of Hitler’s Germany, Sofie watches helplessly, as her beloved Berlin begins to transform, forcing her to consider what they must sacrifice morally.

Twenty years later, Jürgen is one of many German scientists offered pardons, and taken to America to work for its fledgling space program. For Sofie, this is the chance to exorcise the ghosts that followed her across the ocean, and make a fresh start. Review: Goodreads

“The Hemingway Daiquiri is new on our list,” shares Elijah Paulsen, Food & Beverage Manager and Spirits Whisperer. “Hemingway stopped into Havana’s El Floridita bar, not far from the hotel where he lived during much of the 1930s. On his way out, he noticed the bartender setting up Daiquiris. Never one to walk past a drink, Hemingway took a sip. Not bad, he said, but he preferred them with no sugar and double the rum. The bartender made one as specified, and the Papa Doble, or Hemingway Daiquiri, was born.” The rest, as they say, is literary-meets-libation history!

WITH KIERAN

Originally from Surrey, England, Berkeley Hall’s Director of Golf, Kieran is known for his ease in which he plays the game. What you may not know is that Kieran played professionally for 7 years, before starting a new life as a Club Professional, tucking quite a few trophies on his shelf. Over the course of his profession, he has won more than a few titles, and held a few course records. His best finish on one of the bigger tours was 6th place in the Mexican Open. He won the season ending ‘Order of Merit’ title in the South East PGA Section in his last year in England before moving to the USA. Kieran still enjoys competing and has had several Top 10 finishes in CPGA section events.

With two award-winning Tom Fazio courses, an unparalleled Golf Learning Center and our expanded Fazio Green and Golf Academy, it’s fair to say that Berkeley Hall is all about premier golf. However, ask most members and they’ll tell you it’s the welcoming manner of our golf community and our friendly camaraderie that truly set us apart. That speaks largely to our membership, as well as our dedicated golf team led by Kieran.

There’s no doubt that Kieran’s keen wit is equally matched by his dedication to the game. Here, we take a few minutes to learn more about him and his winning approach to the game.

Kieran Staunton | Director of Golf
A WINNING GOLF PHILOSOPHY HAS TAKEN KIERAN STAUNTON QUITE FAR, LITERALLY “ACROSS THE POND,” AS BRITS LIKE TO SAY.
14 BERKELEYHALLCLUB.COM

BHC: How would you describe your golf philosophy?

KS: Keep it simple. Golf is all about getting the ball in the fewest strokes, and has nothing to do with how the swing looks. Allow the flight of the ball to tell you what you need to work on. Play the shots you know you can play.

BHC: Best golf shot of your life?

KS: Playing in the ‘Father/Son’ matchplay at my home club when I

was growing up. I had just started playing and was about 14 years old. I hit a seven wood on the toughest hole at my course after my dad had found the fairway with the tee shot (we play a lot of alternate shot golf in England). My shot curved around the trees at the dogleg and settled on the green. I am sure I have hit better shots as time went on, but at the time this seemed like the best shot ever to me!

BHC: Pro golfer you most admire?

KS: Greg Norman and Nick Faldo were my inspirations growing up. Both were the top of their games as I started to play in the 90’s.

BHC: Advice for those looking to improve their game?

KS: Golf does not always come easily, or quickly. Improving takes time. Practice on the range is not always exciting but needs to be done. Nothing beats playing on the course though. Most importantly, don’t bounce around from tip to tip. Stick with what you are working on.

BHC: Surprise us – what would readers be interested to know?

KS: My Soccer team is Crystal Palace. I don’t follow the English Soccer league as avidly as Alex Madeiros, but I do like to watch CPFC play as often as I can. They are not all that good, but they are my local team!

I played tennis before I started golf. We were a tennis family. My brother played for England, although I was never that good. Maybe one day I will get out and have a refresher lesson from Royce.

There is nothing better than walking the fairways with friends on a perfect Fall day.

GAME ON! 2023 NORTH-SOUTH CHALLENGE

After a warm summer, we are all looking forward to the fall and some of our favorite events of the year.

Fall season officially kicks off with the North-South Challenge on October 7th.

Why is this such a popular annual event? Perhaps it’s because of the friendly, good-natured relationships our members enjoy, and of course, there’s a mix of competitive rivalry, and lots of fun.

It’s a great way to lead off the fall season, and earn bragging rights for your home course!

The tournament is a low-stress fun event, as members that live on the North Course compete against our members that live on the South Course. Don’t miss out on an opportunity to help your side “claim the title” for the next 12 months!

BERKELEY HALL GOLF

ON THE GREENS: LOOK AHEAD

all at Berkeley Hall is truly spectacular and the courses are ready to welcome members back for the Fall season.

With the approval of the North Course renovation in 2024, the agronomy team is planning every detail. A lot goes into the planning of such a large project, as we transition from vision to implementation.

With major components approved, it’s an ideal opportunity to plan some smaller projects the team can complete during the closure to offer members the best experience when we re-open. During this time, you’ll see us leveling irrigation heads, leveling drain basins, making cart path repairs, drainage repairs, auditing the irrigation system, along with tree removal and trimming.

At the same time, we will be working out details and logistics on where materials will be staged. The core golf concept that we all love can present a big challenge in this regard, as we’ll have countless trucks of sod, sand, debris, gravel, and soil. Making sure we have a great plan in place will be paramount as it will aid both efficiency and the member experience.

While we are deferring the greens and irrigation, we will still be doing

quite a bit of work on them during the closure. The greens and irrigation have a good bit of useful life and we plan to do some maintenance and upkeep during the closure to help extend it. New pump stations will be installed at the beginning of the year, protecting us from catastrophic failure and loss of water during the project. We will audit all the irrigation heads to make sure they are throwing a proper consistent pattern, fine tuning and adjusting arcs, upgrading heads around the tees, and replacing any broken caps and yardage plates.

The recommendation to defer the irrigation system was made carefully, thorough evaluation and

much consideration. The upgraded software installed two years ago, new pump stations, and adjustments and upgrades done during the closure will give us an efficient, well-functioning, and reliable irrigation system for years to come, until the pipe, wiring, and heads truly need to be replaced.

We’ll be hosting a series of member meetings and town halls throughout the year, to answer any questions and to provide more information and updates on the renovation as it progresses.

Our continuing goal is to provide the premier golf experience that our membership enjoys.

MOVEMENT IS MEDICINE.

Feel better, move better, live better.

Meet Dr. Chris Martinelli, PT, DPT Physical Therapy & Exercise Physiology

Dr. Chris Martinelli brings physical therapy and exercise physiology to Berkeley Hall’s Wellness Center.

With a bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology and doctorate in physical therapy from West Virginia University, he possesses a deep understanding of the musculoskeletal system and is skilled in developing personalized treatment plans tailored to your needs.

“My motto is: Feel better, move better, live better,” shares Chris.

As owner of Next Level Physical Therapy and Sports Performance

Services in Bluffton, having Chris join our Wellness team offers members an added amenity.

Let Chris help you begin your rehabilitation journey by conducting a thorough evaluation. He will assess your movement patterns, strength, range of motion, and any areas of pain or discomfort. Whether you’re recovering from surgery, managing chronic pain, or seeking preventative care, his services target your goals. Treatment interventions include manual therapy, functional dry needling, joint mobilization and manipulation and therapeutic exercise.

In addition to physical therapy, Chris provides wellness performance services designed to address fatigue, balance, muscle tone, and flexibility. A certified strength and conditioning specialist, he establishes your baseline with a comprehensive assessment that addresses your “wants” (increase strength, balance, energy) and assesses your “needs” (mobility, posture, bone density).

“The outcome is a personalized program to meet your goals, like getting your golf swing back or improving your pickle ball game,” explains Chris.

Come meet Chris and embark on your path to wellness! Book your session with the Fitness Center at 843.815.8985.

Licensed Massage Therapist

Kathryne McCracken specializes in Myofascial therapy.

The newest member of our Wellness team, she brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Berkeley Hall.

“Unlike traditional massage, which focuses mainly on muscles, this modality treats the body threedimensionally by addressing issues within the myofascial systems of the body," explains Kathryne.

“Fascia is a vital organ which protects and sustains our health. It responds to injury or trauma by tightening down to protect us. This is an amazing thing, but it doesn’t know when to let go and that's when knots form in our soft tissues. These knots put pressure on nerves, reduce range of motion, and increase wear and tear on joints. As fascia is like a web that connects to every part of our body, it is possible that when you sprained your ankle when learning to skate or play soccer as a kid is

the source of your knee, hip, or back pain today.”

Kathryne currently serves as Massage Therapy Adjunct at Technical College of the Lowcountry, teaching courses in Kinesiology, Pathology, Anatomy and Physiology. She also hold a degree from Eastern Oregon University in Integrated Studies, Health Studies and History.

If you haven’t met Kathryne yet, please stop in and say hello!

AT THE SPA:

Licensed esthetician Madison Hayes lets you retreat from the everyday, with luxurious and restful facials and botanicals for visibly renewed, healthy-looking skin. By appointment

from 10am-4pm, Madison's facials will have you glowing with a deep cleanse, exfoliation, mask and finishing products. Classic Facials, Detox Facial, Men’s Par-5 Facial, Personalized Cryo Facials and Platinum Cryo Facials. Dermaplaning is now available!
