The BIC serves as a catalyst to spark innovation and sustainable growth of technology-focused companies 45 Woodlawn Avenue Pittsfield, MA 01201 www.berkshireinnovationcenter.com 413-449-1100

The Director’s Desk Meeting the Moment: A Dispatch from the Western Outpost Reflecting recently on the commitment he made to make Massachusetts the global leader in life sciences, former Governor Deval Patrick stressed that he was betting on the Commonwealth’s greatest asset, our people. At the BIC, we serve as a catalyst to spark innovation and sustainable growth for our member companies and strategic partners throughout the region. We do this by offering programs that promote learning and enrich people in technology focused career paths and by providing research and innovation space for people and companies to explore new technologies. Critically, by providing opportunities to learn and space to innovate, we are driving the growth of a tech focused community in the Berkshires. Like Governor Patrick, we are betting on our people. As we convene and connect, and give talented, like-minded people a reason and a place to congregate, we are witnessing the accelerated growth of the next generation of industries that will carry the Berkshires into a new chapter of economic opportunity. EMA is attracting top talent from across the country to move to Pittsfield as home to a world-class site for the commercial space industry. VidMob was recently named the most innovative technology platform by Digiday and is planning to double their Pittsfield workforce. General Dynamics continues to drive major long-term DOD projects to Pittsfield and is making significant efforts to lean on local supply chains. United Aircraft Technologies has landed critical contracts with the US Army and is committing significant time and resources to developing the local talent that they will need to support their rapid growth. Dive Technologies has landed multiple marquee research grants and was recently was acquired by Adrul Industries in a move that will allow their team to scale rapidly. Interprint and Boyd Technologies have both announced that they are making major investments to expand their local operations. Modern Mold and Tool and Sinicon Plastics have similarly expanded their footprints and pushed into new lines of business. Meanwhile, young companies like SolaBlock, Sustaine, and moveEV are at the leading edge of the clean tech revolution.

As these companies and industries continue to grow, the BIC plays a central role as a partner and connective tissue. We are a hub for thought-leadership and technical and business expertise, and are bridging our industry and academic partners to ensure that the county develops, attracts, and retains the talent that our companies need. As part of this, we are raising awareness and changing the perception about the jobs of the future and what it means to live and work in the Berkshires, both for our young people and for those considering making the region their home. We are a thriving region with unlimited potential. While the pandemic has brought unbelievable challenges, it has accelerated change and created new opportunities for the Berkshires. To make sure our advanced manufacturers, including those in the aerospace and defense chain, stay at the cutting edge, this year we plan to launch the BIC Manufacturing Academy in partnership with General Dynamics, MIT’s Institute for Knowledge and Innovation in Manufacturing, the Mass Tech Collaborative, BCC, and others. As Massachusetts works diligently to spread its world class life-science sector across the Commonwealth, we are convening leaders from around state at the BIC this Spring to drill down on the challenges and opportunities and build a coordinated strategy to support the sector locally. To make sure the Berkshires is front and center as the State and Federal Governments make historic investments in the clean tech sector, we are creating an educational curriculum around clean tech and engaging some of our newest members into a working group that can support local clean tech entrepreneurs. The BIC is the western outpost connecting our region to the growing industries and opportunities in the Commonwealth and beyond. These industries are already here and have tremendous opportunities to expand. This will benefit not only the companies themselves, but also our regional economy and workforce. To strike while the iron is hot, and capitalize on this moment, the BIC connects industry, educational partners, and our governmental leaders to ensure that we are working in lock-step to maximize the economic benefit to the Berkshires. Thank you for continuing to engage and for supporting our mission and our community.

Backwards Brain Bicycle Challenge: Rebuilding Pathways in the Brain

Watch the Video!

Riding a bike is cognitively a lot harder than we realize. Consciously, it feels easy once you know how to ride, but under the hood, your brain is taking into account all kinds of factors and running them through a fairly complex algorithm to keep you going. If you change one of the variables, things stop working. So let’s switch gears… If you turn the handlebars left, the bike will turn right. If you turn the handlebars right, the bike will turn left. The BIC Lean Consortium is a group of companies and organizations that support each other on their Continuous Improvement journey by sharing best practices and resources. Meeting attendees are all continuous improvement practitioners that can offer their suggestions for improvement based on what they see and what they hear. It is a great opportunity to have a team of leading Lean Practitioners tour your plant and provide positive, reinforcing feedback.

The Western Mass Founders Network supports high-growth start-ups in Western Massachusetts with a curated peer-to-peer and experienced mentor network. The network is designed to create a virtuous cycle for scaling executives where they have access to resources in Western Massachusetts, embedding then in the local economy. The shared experience of the peer-topeer network creates an anchor for fellow entrepreneurs and contributes to a robust and diverse mentor network with rich experience.

BETA – the Berkshire E-Talent Accelerator - is an intensive experiential learning program for High School students with an interest in pursuing a career in technology or advanced manufacturing. BETA leverages subject matter experts and academic talent from within the BIC membership network and beyond. The curriculum exposes students to STEM career opportunities in the Berkshires, immerses them in fundamentals critical to these career paths, and introduces them to some of the advanced equipment available at the Innovation Center. The inaugural BETA was a huge success and we are excited to be growing it this year as a summer program.

"My favorite part of the program was getting to see all of what the Berkshires has to offer. I didn’t have a good sense of how many great engineering and technology companies we have in the Berkshires. I also didn’t understand what each one of them does and what their impact is. It was an experience I’ll never forget." - Benjamin Brooks, Pittsfield High School

Tech Demo Days

The BIC is a world-class facility that features leading-edge technology and projects from some of the most advanced organizations in the Commonwealth. For those interested in STEM careers, visiting the BIC is an inspiring and eyeopening experience. It is brightly lit and bristling with technology; it's a showcase of what tech and advanced manufacturing jobs of the future will look like. As not everyone will be able to participate in a six-week intensive BETA program, we've been hosting "Technology Demo Days" at the BIC for students and young adults interesting in pursuing a career in our sector.

Modeled after the FIRST LEGO LEAGUE annual challenge, the Berkshire Robotics Challenge is an opportunity for children from third to eighth grade (ages 8-14) to develop their science and computer skills while designing and programming a robot to complete a challenge. Students work in teams towards a competitive goal while learning problem-solving, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

Educational Collaborations

Tech Impact Collaborative A partnership of:

The Tech Impact Collaborative is an initiative of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI), 1Berkshire, and the Berkshire Innovation Center with the objective of accelerating learning and economic development for the Berkshires through a series of online discussions with thought leaders. New technologies such as big data, artificial intelligence, machine learning and robotics are having a major impact on the nature of work, labor markets, education and training, economic development and more. We are committed to advancing regional understanding of the nature and potential of current and emergent technologies, and how best to take advantage of them while enhancing equity in the Berkshires.

In addition to our ongoing educational programming, the Tech Impact Collaborative, in partnership with the Rural Innovation Initiative and the Center on Rural Innovation (CORI) conducted an assessment of the digital economy ecosystem of Berkshire County. This collaborative and iterative process identifies regional strengths and assets, challenges, and opportunities, and actionable strategies for scalable growth and development.
