Your journey starts here.
Founded in 1907, we’re nestled on a 400-acre campus in the heart of the Berkshires. We’re both worldly and a world like no other, with classrooms and dorms backing up to the base of Mount Everett, surrounded by stunning beauty (with New York City and Boston just a couple of hours away).
You can always come back to Berkshire, and you’ll leave forever changed.

Lifelong Experience
Head of School since 2013, Pieter Mulder grew up in Williamstown, Mass., and earned his B.A. from Williams College in American studies with minors in architecture and environmental science, and his M.A.L.S. from Wesleyan University in mathematics with a concentration in creative writing. He has taught at The American School in Switzerland; Westminster School in Simsbury, Conn., where he also served as assistant dean of faculty; and the Met Center High School in Providence, R.I., an innovative Big Picture public high school funded by the Gates Foundation. He began his Berkshire career as the dean of academic affairs in 2005 and has served as a member of the senior administrative team since then. In 2010, he was appointed director of college counseling, overseeing a college counseling program in which the percentage of Berkshire graduates earning acceptances to the most selective colleges and universities increased to nearly 90%. He enjoys running the Appalachian Trail just above Berkshire’s campus and welcomes all students for a game of chess in his office.

In the mornings, Head of School Pieter Mulder greets students as they begin their academic day.
Meet Our Head of School
Pieter lives on campus with his wife, Lucia. A graduate of Yale University, Lucia serves as Berkshire’s director of communications and marketing. They have two children, Phoebe ’22 and Will ’26.
It is my great honor and privilege to lead Berkshire School, and I could not be prouder of the community and culture our students and adults create together here. At Berkshire, we strive to instill the values, critical skills, initiative, and confidence that will ensure our students’ success in school and beyond.
In the following pages, we will introduce you to Berkshire’s unique opportunities and Signature Programs, which encourage our students to continually reimagine their horizons, to take risks, to discover and pursue lifelong passions, to lead and serve others, and to distinguish themselves in an increasingly competitive college process.
Students and families choose a Berkshire education for an exceptional academic experience that is authentic, relevant, and forward-thinking; for a commitment to character development that is embedded in all aspects of student life; for our strong college and university outcomes; and because we intentionally prepare students for success. Students are encouraged to learn in the words of our School motto: Pro Vita Non Pro Schola Discimus, “Learning—not just for school but for life.”
At the core of our work with young people is knowing them well. We take great pride in knowing each student and their journey from their first days on campus to their walk across the commencement stage. Our talented and dedicated faculty serve as teachers, coaches, and advisors, understanding students through each of these lenses, and inspiring their curiosity, their character, and their commitment to reaching their full potential every day.
Upon leaving Berkshire, our graduates are agile and creative problem solvers, able to communicate effectively and persuasively, think and reason critically, collaborate with others, and understand the importance of making safe, mature decisions. They join a loyal network of nearly 7,000 alumni from more than 64 countries and 50 states, who are leaders in their professional and personal communities. They are, and will be, Bears forever, with a powerful connection to fellow alumni all over the world.
I invite you to visit our campus to see firsthand the extraordinary learning environment, to experience the power of our school culture, and to meet the people who make up this community we all call home.
Yours for Berkshire,
Pieter Mulder P’22,’26 Head of School

Inspiring Teachers, Coaches, and Mentors
Teaching for the future
Our faculty members intentionally choose Berkshire because they recognize we are fully committed to expanding opportunities for our students and furthering their education both in and out of the classroom. They are passionate about aligning their work to reflect new understandings of how students learn best and preparing them for a world driven by exponential change.
The frequent interaction between students and faculty is one of the hallmarks of our school. Faculty want to help students succeed, and students are driven to seek out faculty to make that possible.
Nearly 80% of Berkshire faculty members live in campus housing. Beyond teaching, most faculty members serve as an advisor, coach a sport, help with clubs and activities, and often take on other supervisory roles, which means students interact with faculty multiple times each day in a variety of contexts.
Advisor Program
A meaningful connection
To help you make the most of your time at Berkshire, we’ll pair you with an advisor, who will oversee and guide your experience here. We believe—and research shows—that forging meaningful connections with adult mentors is integral to students’ growth, and it builds character, accountability, and effective communication. You’ll be well versed in how to talk to adults as you become one yourself.
Our advisee groups are a small cross section of students from different grades with various academic experiences and interests. This program allows you to go beyond your natural social networks and learn from others, which in turn strengthens the fabric of our campus culture.
Anytime, Anywhere
Our advisors are available to students from day one at Berkshire to graduation and beyond. They meet with students regularly for dinners and weekly for advisee lunches. In addition, students and advisors have a scheduled weekly meeting, which is built into their academic day.

Who’s on your bench?
Berkshire is your journey, but you won’t go it alone. Every day, in big and small ways, you’ll be supported by a bench of people who really care about you. We design it this way, purposefully creating multiple opportunities to interact with the same adults on campus—faculty members, dorm parents, coaches, advisors, and counselors. Often, the teachers calling on you in the classroom will be the coaches instructing you on the field or collaborating with you on a club. You’ll live alongside dorm parents who connect with you in other settings. The wisdom of this approach: Your bench will get to know what makes you tick, see the places where you might need extra guidance, and help you achieve your goals at Berkshire and beyond.

New Student Center
Berkshire’s renovated and expanded student center is the central hub of our campus. Opening in 2025, it includes the Benson Commons dining hall, student gathering spaces, a music center in a newly created third floor, Student Life offices, the mailroom, and the bookstore. Expect to make a lot of memories in this dynamic, welcoming, and light-filled space.
Floor-to-ceiling windows and an outdoor balcony invite you to take in the dramatic view of the Berkshire Hills. The ground floor opens to an expansive communal green area, connecting student life spaces directly to the outdoors and underscoring Berkshire’s strong sense of place.

Advanced Math/Science Research
Real World Research
Advanced Math/Science Research (AMSR) is a yearlong course that offers an authentic independent laboratory experience to design and execute an original research project of your choice in the biological, physical, or social sciences. What sets Berkshire’s course apart is the program’s format: an internship with a professional scientist to conduct realworld research in world-class facilities. The course culminates with a critical review paper and a research paper, both in scientific format. You’ll present the results to members of the math and science departments and the Berkshire community. Based on their research interests, past students have collaborated with mentors at the College of Nanoscale Science & Engineering SUNY Polytechnic Institute, Albany Medical Center, Wadsworth Medical Center, Union College, UMass Amherst, Bucknell, Williams, and other institutions.
“AMSR students learn the fundamentals of critical thinking and scientific method in a safe environment with state-of-the-art laboratory equipment, utilizing advanced techniques such as realtime polymerase chain reaction, fluorescence microscopy, and Western Blotting. Research is tailored to the interests of each student, conducted at the undergraduate level, and completely student-driven.”

Advanced Humanities Research
A Scholarly Adventure
Advanced Humanities Research (AHR) is no ordinary course. Over a year, students interested in the humanities—languages, literature, history, philosophy, and the arts— tackle a complex topic that doesn’t have a clear “answer.” Similar to a college class at a top liberal arts school, you’ll conduct sophisticated research to arrive at your own conclusion, contributing to and advancing the conversation about your topic. Plan to summarize and critique contemporary scholarship and prepare a comprehensive literature review. Finally, under the guidance of your instructor, you’ll compose and revise a full-length paper to present to the school. Essentially, this is intentional training in critical thinking and creative analysis. Go to New Heights
Our lush surroundings—Mount Everett, Guilder Pond, forests, and meadows—offer a classroom like no other. An alternative afternoon program to traditional team sports, the Ritt Kellogg Mountain Program (RKMP) teaches the wilderness and safety skills to be “outdoorsy” for life. You’ll spend lots of time in nature (always a nice break from technology!), trying new activities or building on your interests. Ready to canoe across the pond? Backcountry ski on a powder day? Belay a classmate who’s climbing to the summit? Set up camp on an overnight mountaineering trip? The best part, besides all of the epic views: You’ll discover what you’re capable of, hone your leadership skills, and deepen your respect for the environment.

Leadership Awards
Each year, Berkshire awards two students the Leadership Award, which recognizes those who have demonstrated genuine leadership potential. Leadership Award recipients receive a scholarship to attend the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School in Maine. This summer program offers rigorous hands-on learning through outdoor adventure, including sailing, surfing, sea kayaking, and backpacking programs.
“My Outward Bound sailing journey in Maine pushed me mentally and physically in ways I had never imagined. The only outdoor experience I’d had was on Berkshire’s campus. The lessons learned have shaped me for life.”

60%
of Berkshire’s electric energy needs are fulfilled through renewable sources. Berkshire is a leader among independent schools in advancing the principles of sustainability, with a culture of conservation and environmental responsibility ingrained across campus. We’ve reduced plastic water bottle usage, planted native species that require less water, and installed several electric car charging stations. The combination of Berkshire’s two-megawatt, eight-acre solar field and our investment in a solar field in Bolton, Mass., allows the School to reach 60% of its electric energy needs through renewable sources.

Performing Arts
What moves you?
Whether you were born for the spotlight or you’re working up the courage to step onto the stage for the first time, Berkshire Theater is for you. Our unique program is a hands-on, ensemble-first, all-voicesheard theater experience centered on a culture of care, belonging, joy, and hard work. We produce three major productions per year, spanning major musicals, contemporary and classic dramas or comedies, short plays in a black box setting, and original works. Many students perform in all three. You can also explore stage management, set building, playwriting, student directing, and theatrical lighting.
The Theater Department also offers academic courses in acting and independent study options. Berkshire’s improv team performs in mustsee events twice each year in the atrium of Berkshire Hall.
Berkshire offers an eclectic variety of dance styles, including contemporary, modern, jazz, hip-hop, ballet, and tap. You’ll explore dance as a powerful tool for expression, creativity, and discussion and take part in the creative process of putting on three main-stage dance concerts each year.

Original Student Work
The dance and theater programs provide opportunities for you to create and choreograph your own work. Dance concerts feature original student-choreographed dance pieces, with an emphasis given to seniors to present a culmination of their experience. The theater program regularly performs fully-produced original theater productions created from the ground up by students and faculty in collaboration.

40
countries are represented in our Berkshire community. Berkshire students are from across the United States and nearly 40 countries. Our diverse and inclusive community helps students learn to respect, understand, and work effectively with people who have different perspectives and experiences.
Define your balance
Berkshire will encourage you to lead a healthy, balanced life, to work collaboratively to achieve common goals, and to find strength and support from all members of our community. You’ll develop the right pace to your day, with activities, clubs, and events building in time for both rejuvenation and fun beyond the academic schedule. Berkshire has deeprooted traditions that help define the Berkshire experience, including Mountain Day, Winter Carnival, and Senior Dinner. But what makes Berkshire unique is that students do not simply uphold traditions and show up to events; instead, they build traditions and new programs, and as a result they are involved, invested, and connected. You will be, too.

Home away from home
While it’s true that there’s no place like home, Berkshire aims to come in a close second. In your dorm, you’ll have all the creature comforts you love, with a lot of added bonuses: a built-in social life of friends you’ll keep for years to come; a diverse array of dorm mates from different grades and from all over the world; and opportunities to develop responsibility, self-sufficiency, and connectedness unique to a boarding school experience. Not to mention movie nights with dorm snacks in a bustling common room.
Dorm parents—faculty members who live in the dorms with students—take on a parentlike role, giving each dorm a true family feeling. They’re the people you’ll turn to when you’re seeking advice or need help with your homework or just feel like chatting about your day. And because they know you so well, they’re also the people who will see your potential and ask you to rise to it. As a safe and nurturing environment, residential life at Berkshire is the ideal launching pad for your time on campus and beyond.

At Berkshire, we aim to help you develop the habits of mind and character that will prepare you for success in your academic pursuits and in your life in general. We dive deep into topics like character development, citizenship, identity, decision making, inclusion, leadership, and the college transition, helping you better understand yourself and the world around you.
Through intentional and developmentally appropriate workshops, speakers, and classroom curricula, you’ll gain science-based and relevant tools for navigating challenges and creating strong relationships, the foundation for growth and development.
“We strive to embed well-being in every aspect of school life, emphasizing the importance of supporting students’ emotional, social, and mental health. When students cultivate strong relationships, embrace challenges, practice resilience, and seek out opportunities for growth, we fulfill our role as educators by helping them become their best selves.”

Pro Vita Programming
For School, For Life
Pro Vita Programming is an extension of Berkshire’s motto: “Learning, not just for school but for life.” One Saturday morning each trimester, the community comes together to hear from new voices and engage in conversations and activities that challenge and inspire. These moments are collaborative across various departments and often include partnership with current parents and alumni. The learning objectives of each program extend beyond the day itself through the sharing of resources for teachers and advisors, a featured keynote speaker, and guided conversations in small group settings to both prepare you beforehand and to allow time for reflection afterward.
