Christening a New Season Welcome to the second edition of Berkshire Crew’s newsletter. We were overwhelmed by the positive response to the first newsletter, which went out last spring. It was great to hear from so many alumni and friends of the program, and we were thrilled that so many of you chose to donate to support the teams. To date, we have received more than 30 gifts, totaling almost $20,000! It’s heartening to know that so many folks are behind us. With those gifts we were able to significantly upgrade in several areas; the biggest upgrades were the two new boats we were able to purchase — the Steven W. Lloyd and the Osprey. In addition, we acquired new cox boxes, oars, slings and power megaphones for the coaches. All the rowers and coxswains benefitted from your support throughout the season, and we all thank our donors. Row Bears! – Coach MacKenzie and Coach Olson

On Saturday, April 20, 2013, prior to our first home race of the season, Berkshire crew christened the latest addition to the fleet, the Steven W. Lloyd. The boat was named in honor of one of the founders of crew at Berkshire, Steven Lloyd, who passed away in August 2012. We were honored to be joined at the ceremony by members of Mr. Lloyd’s family, including his brother and sister who still live in the area, as well as his wife, Susie, and the couple’s four daughters Sarah, Molly, Abby and Caroline. Susie poured champagne on the bow of the boat, as did his sister,
Donna Lloyd Stoetzner, and brother, Jeff, before sending the shell off to what we all hope will be a fast and winning career. Alumni shared their recollections of Steve, some serious and some light-hearted. John Guetens ‘83, who called Mr. Lloyd “one of my favorite faculty members during my time at Berkshire,” related the story of being forced to run six miles back to campus after the team turned in a half-hearted effort on the water. Despite this, John remains thankful to Mr. Lloyd for having introduced him to the sport.

Heading into Berkshire School’s 35th crew season, the level of excitement could not be any higher. Both teams are ecstatic in preparing for spring, with high hopes for a competitive season. The spring kick-off is a week of training in Tampa Bay, but with the boys competing in the fall as well, Berkshire’s crew program is constantly expanding. The girls team roster has nearly doubled, and with both returners and newcomers alike we are all ready to get down to business for a great season! We cannot wait to see you all down on the water. Catching up with crew alumni Girls’ 1st Boat - Sophie Perekslis ‘14, Juliet Duplessie ‘16, Arwen Neski ‘15, Maddy Maher ‘13, Olivia Good ‘15 (not seen)
Several recent graduates are beginning their collegiate careers this fall. Maddy Maher ’13 started at Hamilton College, where she was strongly recruited by the coaching staff based on her rowing experience as well as her sterling academic record. Juan Escobar ‘13 tried out for and made one of the most competitive club teams in the country at the University of Virginia, while boat mate Lars Robinson ‘13 has found time in a busy first year at West Point to walk on to the team there. Finally, former team captain Will Knight ’13 is a member of the freshman crew at the University of Wisconsin, where he joins his older brother, a Groton graduate, but where they both live in the shadow of their older sister, Hilary, a hockey star for the Badgers and for the U.S. national team. Morgan Burgess ’11, a junior at Hobart William Smith, competed at the NCAA Women’s Rowing Championships in Indianapolis this past June. Morgan was a member of the Herons’ JV eight, which won the petite final, finishing fifth overall, and contributing to a fourth place team finish for the program. After her school rowing wrapped up, Morgan participated in a development camp where she learned to scull and competed at the Independence Day Regatta in Philadelphia and at the USRowing Club Nationals in Camden, NJ.
COACHES CORNER Girls’ Coach: Paul MacKenzie Mr. MacKenzie began his rowing career at Georgetown University, where he was a member of the Lightweight crew. After graduation, he rowed competitively for the Riverside Boat Club. He began his coaching career at Wellesley College and has also coached at Williams College, Buckingham, Brown & Nichols School and Brooks School. Mr. MacKenzie, in his 10th year at Berkshire, teaches history and works in the College Counseling Office. He and his wife, Maura, live on campus with their two children.
Boys’ Coach: David Olson A native of New Hampshire, Mr. Olson learned to row at Philips Exeter Academy and continued his career at the University of New Hampshire. Prior to Berkshire, Mr. Olson coached at Great Bay Rowing and taught at Kennett H.S., in North Conway, NH. This is Mr. Olson’s second year at Berkshire. He teaches English and lives in Allen dormitory.

2013 Camp Sloane in Lakevi
The 2013 spring racing season was, by all accounts, a successful one for Berkshire boys crew. After a tough early season loss to Taft and Choate in the opening regatta, the team started to find their rhythm and accumulate wins. At the Founder’s Day Regatta on Lake Waramaug (Kent, CT) the team was again called to rise with powerhouse opponents such as Cincinnati Junior Rowing Club, a perennial national championship contender. After upsetting a highly ranked Gunnery crew, the Bears qualified boats at all four levels for the New England Interscholastic Rowing Association Championship, a first in program history. The championship itself featured incredibly competitive racing with every Berkshire boys crew crossing the line within split seconds of rival crews, and usually ahead. It was a great day for the program as the first boat’s 9th place matched the best finish in school history. The girls crew enjoyed a successful season last spring, with the first boat recording wins over Lincoln, Miss Porter’s, Canterbury, Southfield and Taft. The victory over Taft was the first in the past 10 years. The first boat was seeded 16th for the NEIRA Regatta and finished fifth in their heat, 16th overall. We said farewell to co-captains Maddy Maher and Rhiannon Vanderbeek, as well as fellow seniors Maddie Bricken, Julia Reger, and Sissi Wang. Thanks to all of them for their contributions to the team and best of luck in college!
