Rowing into our 34th Season Greetings from Berkshire Crew, and welcome to the first edition of our newsletter. This publication is part of our effort to reach out to the extended crew family of alumni, parents, and friends of the program to help us build and maintain a strong, competitive team. Our hope is that this will serve as a useful tool to keep you all up-to-date with what is new at the boathouse and how our season is going. In addition, we will be including information on other rowing activities such as Head of the Charles, CRASH-B sprints, summer camps, and alumni rowing in college. As the crew program enters its 34th season at Berkshire, we continue to grow and prosper. We recognize that rowing has been an important part of many people’s experience here, and we would love to hear your stories. Please be in touch! We have included a brief “wish list” on page 3, as well as a return envelope, and I hope that you will be able to help support the growth of this important program. Row Bears! – Coach MacKenzie and Coach Olson
In Memory of Steven W. Lloyd Steven Lloyd graduated from Trinity College and began his teaching career at Berkshire School. During his time, he founded Berkshire’s crew program in 1979 through a grant from Headmaster James Moore with one wooden eight and two wooden fours obtained second-hand by Director of Athletics, Jack Stewart. After five years at Berkshire, Steven went on to work at Peddie School in New Jersey, where he coached girls’ crew for thirteen years. His efforts and contributions to our program have benefited generations of Berkshire rowers, and we will be seeking to honor his memory in 2013. Steven was predeceased by his sister, Jane Lloyd, a Berkshire graduate of the Class of 1981.

Hello, and welcome to the 2013 crew season! We are excited about the season, and we are already looking forward to some strong racing this spring. First, though, is our trip to Tampa. We can’t wait to get back on the water and row with the dolphins, to help the novices learn the sport, and to spend time working on our tans in the Florida sun. Last season we showed that we were competitive with many crews, qualifying for New Englands. This season we expect to be stronger, with the addition of some promising young talent. We really hope some of you will be able to make it to a race this season. Founder’s Day, on Sunday, May 5, is usually a good one. We’ll have the tent set up and plenty of refreshments, and we’d love to see you there. Row Bears! – Maddy Maher ’13, Rhi Vanderbeek ’13, Will Knight ’13
Upcoming trip to tampa, FL We will once again be taking our spring break training trip to Tampa this March. This will be our fifth (or maybe sixth) consecutive visit to Tampa, and it has become a valuable part of the team’s improvement over the years. We invite both returning rowers and novices to join us for a week in the sunny warmth of Florida. This trip is a great chance for new rowers to learn the sport without the distractions of school (and in beautiful weather conditions). For experienced rowers, it’s a great chance to get back in the swing of the sport. The dolphins, the graffiti on the seawall, the row around Davis Island, and people watching at the University of Tampa dining hall, have all become annual traditions for the crew, and we all look forward to our week in the sun each spring.
FLEET UPDATE Berkshire is pleased to announce that we are updating our fleet this spring. We have sold the Pro Vita, the girls’ lightweight four, as well as a boys’ four and two doubles. With the proceeds, we have ordered a new midweight four for the girls, which will be named in honor of Steven Lloyd. We will be having a christening ceremony for the new shell, which is tentatively scheduled for our season-opening race against Taft and Choate at Camp Sloane on Saturday, April 20. We will be ordering a new boys’ boat when fundraising is completed. If you would like to contribute towards the new boat, please contact Director of Development Bill Bullock at wbullock@berkshireschool.org.

2012 Highlights
Coxwains: Nick Asaro ‘13 and Addie Bullock ‘14
Berkshire raced two boats in the 2012 Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston last October. The tremendous growth of junior rowing has made entries in this event very difficult to get, and 2012 was the first year since 2009 that Berkshire crews had raced at the Charles. With fall crew no longer offered, the teams squeezed in practice on Sundays prior to the race. Race day turned out to be a gorgeous, sunny autumn day with a light but steady headwind blowing down the course. The Bears launched from Northeastern’s Henderson Boathouse, and had a long paddle down to the starting line. The boys’ boat of Lars Robinson ’13, Will Knight ’13, Juan Escobar ’13, Dylan O’Connor ’14, and cox Nick Asaro ’14, had a clean race. The girls’ boat of Maddy Maher ’13, Arwen Neski ’15, Rhi Vanderbeek ’13, Sophie
Girls’ Four - Maddy Maher ‘13, Arwen Neski ‘15, Rhi Vanderbeek ‘13, Sophie Perekslis ‘14, Addie Bullock ‘14
Perekslis ’14, and cox Addie Bullock ’14, rowed well but ran into some traffic at the Weeks Footbridge that slowed them down a bit. It was a great experience for all involved, and one we hope will continue to be an annual event for Berkshire crew.

Item
As we all know, rowing can be an expensive sport. While we are fortunate to have the support of our athletic department to cover some of our basic costs, we continue to depend on the generosity of our supporters to meet the full needs of the program. In each issue of this newsletter we will be including a “Wish List” of items that the program needs that our athletic budget will not cover. We appreciate your support and every gift makes a difference!
