What is it? The Sabin Entrepreneurial Prize is an initiative created with the generous support of the Andrew Sabin Family Foundation to educate and expose Berkshire students enrolled in Advanced Economics to entrepreneurship and sustainability. The Sabin Entrepreneurial Prize is awarded to the best business plan for a product, service, project or program that not only could be financially feasible, but could contribute to living in more sustainable communities. Additionally, the prize competition provides quality feedback from professionals, collaboration with the Yale Center for Business and the Environment, and opportunities for participants to meet with guest speakers from the business and environmental worlds.

Single-cup coffee brewing systems are increasingly popular, with over 42% of American households owning a Keurig coffee system. The ease and efficiency create an understandable appeal, but compatible coffee pods have resulted in over 13 billion plastic coffee pods ending up in landfills each year, exacerbating an already devastating pollution issue. Our CoCups are compostable coffee pods made out of hemp plastic and hemp paper. Hemp products are entirely compostable and produce no CO2 as they break down, so consumers don’t have to sacrifice ease for sustainability. In addition to being heat proof and waterproof, hemp is a much more sustainable alternative to wood, as hemp uses less water, has a reduced growing time, and produces four times as many usable fibers per acre than trees. Our product will attract sustainable-minded coffee consumers and distributors alike, and we hope to change the way instant coffee is made while considering our impact on the environment.

The Sabin Entrepreneurial Prize seeks to:     

Introduce students to the essentials of writing a business plan; Provide a real-world platform to practice public speaking and presenting; Promote the entrepreneurial spirit; Stimulate creativity and critical thinking as it applies to the area of sustainable living; Reward effective collaboration in the construction and promotion of a coherent and sustainable business plan.

Glidely is the first company to bring textiles to downhill snow sports. By attacking an industry that has been previously run by unsustainable, time-consuming, and labor-intensive wax products, Glidely is completely revolutionary to the community. Glides are a reusable adhesive barrier placed between skis and the snow. Made of sustainable and effective materials, Glides are strong waterproof textiles that act as a wax replacement. Say goodbye to short winters and countless hours standing over your ski bases, Glidely optimizes time on snow to grip and rip!

What are the business plans? Carbon Cred

Who is the sponsor?

Greenhouse gasses (GHGs) have many detrimental effects on the environment. CarbonCred is an incentive-based app that encourages users to reduce their GHG emissions by taking public transportation, carpooling, and/or by limiting driving of personal cars in general. The app will verify users' reduction of their emissions in order to harvest carbon credits. One carbon credit is equivalent to the prevention of one metric ton of GHG emissions from being released into the atmosphere. Users can accumulate “Carbits” (our form of currency in app) which are a small fraction of the carbon credits they are generating. Users can spend Carbits in our app on a variety of products, offers, and discounts. Some key features include the marketplace (as previously mentioned), social aspect (friendly wagers), and a membership system with special perks. Our goal is to encourage and draw appeal to sustainable modes of transportation in order to repair and improve the overall health of our environment. CarbonCred will not only be helping the environment gradually, but we will also be educating the younger generations that join our movement in the process. Our hope is that our app inspires a change.

MySpot

Sydney Allen ’22  Sam Haskel ’22  Emmanuel Nda ’22

MySpot is a parking app that allows users to rent parking spots, acting as an Airbnb type model. In major cities, people spend up to 107 hours a year looking for parking spots. MySpot provides a cheap and efficient way to park in a city, while also saving the environment from the excess gas used while people drive around the city looking for spaces. MySpot works by allowing people who own or lease a parking spot in a city to sublease their spot when they are away, allowing them to make money on an unused asset. On the other side, MySpot gives people who are looking for a cheap and efficient way to park in the city a great option, which they can book in advance. Our mission is — to save the environment one park at a time. -Page 6-
