bermuda ha ha Sherlock Holmes BY ROGER CROMBIE

It was with a mixture of surprise and envy that I greeted the return of my friend Sherlock Holmes from the islands of Bermuda. “Whatever drew you thither?” I asked him. “I was approached, Watson, by the highest representatives of Her Majesty’s Government, in Whitehall,” Holmes replied. “They beseeched me to explain how the residents of such a tiny place, far from civilisation, might earn so handsome a living almost entirely without industry of any sort.” “Through taxation, surely?” I suggested. “They have neither personal nor corporate taxes in Bermuda,” Holmes replied. “And so the island is without any form of government,” I essayed. “On the contrary, Watson,” Holmes said, lighting his meerschaum pipe, “Bermuda has more government employees, and far better paid, than any sane man would consider feasible. Members of their Parliament each serve few more than 1,000 constituents.” “I fail to see how such a thing is possible,” I said. “Were you able to solve the conundrum?” “Not entirely,” said Holmes, a slight note of irritation entering his tone. “People earn enormous amounts and, therefore, anything one might want costs a king’s ransom. I met fellows who were paying several thousand dollars every few weeks to rent small houses. A sandwich or a newspaper can cost as much as £4.” “Four pounds!” I exclaimed. “That cannot be, Holmes. A sandwich costs no more than a shilling, a newspaper tuppence.” “True,” said Holmes, “but here in London one has paid a pretty penny in taxes before being allowed to keep a shilling. In Bermuda, one keeps the whole pound, but finds that it does not go so very far.” “Did the islanders welcome you?” I asked. “Hardly,” said Holmes. “I was often asked why a local detective might not be employed to resolve the issue. When I pointed out that there were none, I was rebuffed. No matter, they said, it is not acceptable to bring in outsiders.” “Still, they must have thanked you for your report, what?” “They did not, Watson,” Holmes said. “Bermuda has a grand tradition in which reports are commissioned with great fanfare and, when delivered, are left on shelves in one of the many Government offices, to gather dust.” “How, then, does society progress?” I asked. “Watson, you sparkle today,” said Holmes. “Society does not progress. It is as if time has stood still, despite the introduction of such modern gadgetry as powered bicycles and long trousers. The climate is appalling, the geographical isolation intense. Altogether, a most undesirable location.” “However do they attract workers?” I asked. “No taxation, my dear fellow, is a powerful stimulant. So much so that people stay on the islands in their old age, when common sense dictates that they gather up their wealth and flee to some less costly location.” “Singular behaviour,” I remarked. “Quite,” said Holmes. “Why anyone would act in such a fashion is, I fear, one mystery that I shall never solve. And now some tea, perhaps. Mrs. Hudson!”

explore Our enchanting island paradise

JOHNNY BARNES Photo by www.moongateproductions.com

A Living legend, Johnny Barnes He’s the ultimate ‘morning person’ and a warm greeting from folk hero Johnny Barnes is the ideal way to start your sightseeing tour. Every weekday he’s at Crow Lane roundabout from 6am to 10am, showering city commuters with waves, blown kisses and a smile that could melt the heart of even the most jaded traveller. We begin our tour in the historic former capital, St. George’s. Wherever you go, don’t forget to greet all you meet: as Johnny reminds us each morning — it’s the Bermuda way!

Using our maps It’s easy to find your way around Bermuda. There are four main arteries: South Road runs along the south shore, North Shore Road hugs the north shore, Middle Road runs through the centre of the island and Harbour Road follows the inner harbour, across from Hamilton. Each road brings you into the city of Hamilton. Key attractions are numbered on our maps in this section and described in the text. In addition to the full key map of the island on pages 32 & 33 there is a large pullout map in the centre of this magazine; for a map of St. George’s, see page 19, the City of Hamilton on 24 and Dockyard on 34. ‘W’ at the end of a listing denotes ‘wheelchair accessible’.

Parishes In 1609 the survivors of the English wreck of the Sea Venture struggled onto Bermuda’s shores, well short of their intended destination of Jamestown, Virginia. By 1615 the Somers Island Company was developing Bermuda and exploiting her natural resources. The island was surveyed and what is now St. George’s Parish was set aside as public or company land. The remainder was divided into eight tribes or parishes, named after the principal shareholders in the Somers Island Company. These were, from east to west: Hamilton, Smith’s, Devonshire, Pembroke, Paget, Warwick, Southampton and Sandys. Along with St. George’s, they have become the nine parishes of Bermuda.

The 1914 Silent-Movie Classic ‘Neptune’s Daughter’ was filmed at Crystal Caves By Horst Augustinovic

Produced by Universal Studios at the then huge cost of $35,000, ‘Neptune’s Daughter’ was filmed in Bermuda – largely at Crystal Cave and the Hamilton Princess Hotel where the company stayed. Underwater scenes were filmed at the Bermuda Biological Station, then located on Agar’s Island. In ‘Neptune’s Daughter’ the daughter of King Neptune, starring Annette Kellermann, determines to avenge the death of her sister who was caught in a fishing net, however, she falls in love with the king upon whom she planned to take her revenge. ‘Neptune’s Daughter’ was based on Annette Kellermann’s idea of “a water fantasy movie with beautiful mermaids in King Neptune’s garden together with a good love story.” Fortunately for Universal Studios ‘Neptune’s Daughter’ proved a huge success and grossed $1,000,000, largely due to the popularity of Annette Kellermann, an Australian swimmer with many records to her credit. In 1906 she performed her vaudeville aquatic act in Chicago, Boston and New York where she earned $1,250 a week! Unfortunately the Boston police were not amused by her one piece, skirtless bathing suit, and promptly arrested her. This did not diminish her popularity and established her as a fighter for women’s rights. In ‘Neptune’s Daughter’ Annette Kellermann performed her own stunts, including an 18-meter dive into a pool containing five crocodiles. Her sister recalled that although “she was in and out almost before her back was wet … for months after she would wake up screaming”. Unfortunately while filming a fight scene on Agar’s Island, the glass front of the tank gave way, slightly injuring Miss Kellermann and seriously cutting the villain. Technically a mermaid, her outfit as Neptune’s Daughter consisted of nothing but a body stocking and a flowing wig, giving the impression of total nudity! Judged the ‘perfect woman’ from 10,000 contestants in the USA – though she quipped “from the neck down” – Annette Kellermann was a strong advocate of swimming for physical health, fitness and beauty and in 1918 published “Physical Beauty and how to Keep It” and the autobiographical “How to Swim”. She died in 1975 at the age of 89 in Australia. A film of her life, “Million Dollar Mermaid”, starring Esther Williams, appeared in 1952.

The one piece bathing suit that got Annette Kellermann arrested in Boston.

art Last Chance to see the Bermuda Biennial 2014: A View from the Edge By Lisa Howie, Director, Bermuda National Gallery

Vaughan Evans, View from the Edge of Abbot’s Cliff In One Part, 2013, relief print (lino) on Chinese paper.

The Bermuda Biennial is a platform for the Island’s contemporary art scene. Started in 1994, the exhibition continues to represent the vitality and creativity of local artists, and provides an opportunity for these artists to engage in an internationally juried process. This year’s jurors were Isolde Brielmaier (a New York-based curator, writer and program consultant, as well as Visiting Professor, Tisch School of the Arts at NYU) and Amanda Coulson (Executive Director at the National Gallery of Bahamas; curator, art critic, co-founder of VOLTA art fairs in Basel and New York). Signe Constable, jpeg 3, 2013, digital photograph, 7x 25 in.

2014 marks the 11th Anniversary of this important exhibition and this year a theme was established: A View from the Edge. Artists were asked to address how the physical reality of an island informs one’s identity. To consider questions such as: How do we transcend restriction or embrace limitation? In what ways are we both bounded and connected, living in confinement and paradise, experiencing insularity and resilience? The jurors said of the submissions: “As guests in Bermuda, we were conscious of our own placement on the edge, being given a glimpse into a community with which we saw moments of divergence from our usual field of reference, but also many connections to our own roots and experiences. In any culture or country the artist is the one who looks at the world differently, who sets off down a new avenue of inquiry, and who has the bravery to share his or her usually unique worldview. We are so privileged, therefore, to be invited to view the submissions, many of Russell de Moura, Nary the Twain Shall Meet, which were extraordinary, original, unique and 2013, photo-manipulation, 38 x 60 in. breathtaking.”

golf ”Posture is Everything - Arse Out” BY KIM SWAN, J.P. TEACHING PROFESSIONAL

Countless golfers are on a journey to improve their golf games, seeking key swing tips that will transform their games. This is what we call the “golf bug” and thankfully this obsession to become better golfers exist, as it is what drives the industry and makes golf the great sport that it is. It is especially interesting to watch golfers chase the dream to get better - each individual is different and unique the fundamentals are the same but how they are applied is a reflection of each persons different makeup.

GOOD POSTURE IS KEY Good Posture is key for the development of a sound golf swing - the centre core of the body rotates as a central hub and good posture Rory McIlroy, Photo by Mark Tatem allows that rotation to be effective good posture promotes good balance which feeds off of your rhythm to allow you to swing in good timing. I remember a great Irish player commenting on a good shot I hit once - “ah yah got ye Arse into that one” - provided a good chuckle. But as a golf coach those priceless remarks, then in the presence of former Ryder Cup player - not only provide a great story to share with my students - but offers proof positive of the importance of posture. When a golfer’s chest points at the ball during the address position, with their butt out it creates a straight back, placing the golfer in an athletic position to swing the club over their shoulder, turning down and through the ball and before the club finishing up to their ear. It is good posture being maintained throughout the swing which provides control and consistency. At Port Royal in a few days we will be in the presence of four of golf’s great modern day players. We urge the golfing public to observe their postures and see how essential good posture is to their golf games. Then go and try to emulate their example and make your posture the best it can be. Good posture is the foundation to build a sound reliable golf swing. At Port Royal Golf Developmental Program our focus is on encouraging our students to appreciate and incorporate proper fundamentals into their golf games. Proper posture is an essential part of building a sound golf swing. Questions & comments: kimswangolf@gmail.com

The World’s Best Tasting Vodka

historical stories Heritage Matters: A Cup to Toast Tom Moore By Dr. Edward Cecil Harris, MBE, JP, PHD, FSA

“Walsingham” in Hamilton Parish has been synonymous with the name of the Irish poet Thomas Moore and postcards stated, probably erroneously, that he lived there, overlooking one of the inlets of ‘Tom Moore’s Jungle’.

In the depths of the jungle down Hamilton Parish way stands the venerable and ancient home, “Walsingham”, known colloquially for many decades as “Tom Moore’s Tavern”, though he, the poet, probably never slept there. Next to the building, on the edge of an extensive range of caves stood a solitary calabash tree, itself perhaps as old as “Walsingham”, but alas no more, being toppled in a great storm some years ago. One enduring story revolves around the calabash tree at “Walsingham”, as it was said that the Irish poet, Thomas Moore, penned one of his Bermuda poems under the shadow of its leaves and enormous seed casings, the latter about the size of a 32-pounder cannonball, a danger perhaps to the ethereal head of such a savant. Thirty years after his sojourn hereabouts, we find the poet married to the actress Bessy Dyke, whom he had met at the Kilkenny Theatre Festival in 1808 when she was fourteen and he a mature 29; they married three years later.

The Irish poet, Thomas Moore, was in Bermuda for a few months in 1804.

picturesque spot they describe, and the noble tree which I believe still adorns it. One of the few treasures (of any kind) I possess is a goblet formed of one of the fruit-shells of this remarkable tree, which was brought from Bermuda, after years since, by Mr. Dudley Costello and which that gentleman, having had it tastefully mounted as a goblet, very kindly presented to me.” Upon receipt of that sterling silver and gilt memento of Bermuda, Moore wrote that his wife ‘Bessy does nothing but drive about, carrying it with her and exhibiting it to all her friends’. Hallmarked 1834 and made by Charles Rawlings and William Summers of London, the Moore Cup is now in the collections of the National Museum of Bermuda. Made with half a calabash shell, engraved around the rim are the words: “Drink of this Cup, you’ll find there’s a spell in its every drop ’gainst the ills of Mortality!” On the pedestal is the commemoration: To THOMAS MOORE ESQR. This cup Formed from a Calabash which grew on the Tree that bears his Name, near Walsingham in Bermuda, Is gratefully inscribed By one of the most ardent Admirers of His Patriotism as a Man and His Genius as a Poet MDCCCXXXIV Dudley Costello. Dudley Costello (1803–1865) was a soldier, journalist and illustrator whose sister Louisa, a limner, author and poet, was admired by Moore. Costello was stationed in Bermuda as an ensign in the 96th Regiment of Foot, when he presumably picked the calabash at “Walsingham” in 1825-6. His idea for a gift for Thomas Moore resulted in the beautiful piece of Irish-Bermuda heritage that stands before you today in these pages. historical stories Do you know… about the Bermuda Dioramas? – Part 1 By Horst Augustinovic

The ‘Legend of St. Brendan’ Diorama.

In 1950 a series of eleven Dioramas showing scenes from Bermuda’s early history were created by the Belgian artist Emil Antoine Verpilleaux and the Polish sculptor Andre Bohomolec after much collaboration with historians Commander Leslie Howarth, Walter Hayward, Hereward Watlington and Dr. Henry Wilkinson. These Dioramic Tableaux are reproduced in three dimensions by placing figures and objects in front of a painted background. The Dioramas were initially exhibited at the ‘Bermuda Cavalcade Gallery’ on Front Street in Hamilton and after they were purchased by the Bermuda Trade Development Board in 1952, they became part of a display in Fort St. Catherine, also featuring replicas of the Crown Jewels, various wax figures featuring life in a military fort as well as Boer War carvings. Unfortunately the Dioramas were destroyed during renovations in 2010. THE LEGEND OF ST. BRENDAN An Irish monk known as Saint Brendan the Navigator lived from 484 to 578 and according to legend was the first to discover Bermuda when, sometime between 566 and 573, he and 17 other monks set off on a seven-year voyage to the west where they may have reached Iceland, the Canary Islands and the Azores, as well as the Western Hemisphere where they may have landed on Bermuda and the North American mainland. In his ‘History of Virginia’, Captain John Smith mentions St. Brendan as an early discoverer of America and Seamus MacCall wrote “Bermuda is quite probably the ‘isle if birds’ which St. Brendan claimed to have discovered after sailing forty days westward from the Azores and noted as being inhabited only by many varieties of birds who astonished the Saint by talking to him.”

historical stories do you know...

Left: Saint Brendan and the whale from a 15th-century German manuscript. Below: Martin Behaim and the globe he made in 1492 – now the oldest surviving terrestrial globe in the world.

It is interesting that the famous German cartographer and navigator Martin Benhaim placed the ‘Saint Brendan Island’ near the location of Bermuda on the terrestrial globe he made in 1492, just prior to the discovery of the Americas. This globe is not only interesting from a cartographic point of view, but also because it is covered in illustrations and inscriptions describing fantastic lands, legends, superstitions, beasts and astrological symbols. No other terrestrial globe offers so much information, making it unique. Sadly, there is no evidence that St. Brendan discovered Bermuda more than 1,000 years before the wreck of the Sea Venture in 1609, however, the earliest descriptions of Bermuda all mention the Cahow birds which showed no fear of man and made cries like human speech. Is it therefore not possible that St. Brendan and his fellow monks were the first to set foot on the islands of Bermuda? Questions & comments: Horst Augustinovic, netlink@link.bm bermuda.com

global flavours A little taste of Mexico ROSA’S / BY BELCARIO THOMAS

SPONSORED BY

Chef Jamie Cota Sandez is authentic as it gets, hailing straight from the kitchens of San Jose Del Cabo, Mexico, he has scoured the earth looking to bring a taste of his home to the Devil’s Isles. Fresh, authentic and homemade is what the new taste Rosa’s is all about, demonstrated well in their ever popular Tacos Al Pastor. Served on a soft corn tortilla, Achiote (popular in the Yucatan) is marinated in pork and grilled pineapple with cabbage-cilantro salad, lime wedge, sour cream & a delicious green tomatillo sauce all made, you guessed it, really fresh. One of the rare places in Bermuda where your food finishes cooking at your table, it doesn’t get much more traditional than their famous Molcajete. Grilled beef short ribs, grilled chicken with grilled pineapple, roast vegetables, drizzled with signature made-from-scratch bbq sauce, served in a sizzling hot “lava rock bowl” straight from the oven. For the lighter eaters, their mango chicken salad with field greens, baby tomatoes, fresh mango, vegetables, topped with a mango chili vinaigrette will keep your winter figure holiday ready. All that good eating though, is bound to leave one thirsty, a good thing, as the signature cocktails at Rosa’s full bar range from non-alcoholic classic mocktails for the family to over 12 different tequila-flavored cocktails with a sampler special for your slow-sipping pleasure. Sweet tooth urges? Try the Churros, a soft dough, fried till crispy and golden, with cinnamon sugar and your choice of chocolate, strawberry or honey dipping sauces. Other sinfully tasty options include the Chili Chocolate Fondant, Almond Fried Ice Cream or as a lighter option, Mango Sorbet served up with 2 scoops goodness. With multi level nooks indoors and outdoor patio dining, Rosa’s is open for everything from family dining to special events to private date nights in a casual, relaxed, friendly setting right on Front Street.

A delectably atmospheric Tex Mex restaurant.

your table awaits

Not your Nonna’s Italian Restaurant PORTOFINO / BY NADIA HALL

You’d be forgiven for thinking that Portofino, with its extensive menu of classic dishes, was just your average family Italian. The cozy wooden, table clothed interior, with walls displaying rolling countryside vistas, create that intimate familiarity and it excels in providing those household favourites to generation after generation. This popular and reliable, family friendly spot is the go-to for group dining, but I’d encourage even those bound to having “the usual” to venture off-piste – Chef Filippo Vianello has an insatiable appetite for new dishes, often experimenting at home tonight with tomorrow’s dinner specials. He demonstrates his camera-ready flair for the unfamiliar in the kitchen, at first offering grilled diver scallops wrapped in pancetta, the Italian bacon. The traditional Sicilian side, “caponata,” is updated with butternut squash, in lieu of the original eggplant. It’s sweet and salty and perfect for the Fall season. This was only the beginning of what was soon to become a veritable feast. He lays it on thick, birthday thick, presenting his Straccetti di Manzo, thinly sliced beef tenderloin laid on a parmesan crisp with oyster mushrooms and a rich ruby Barolo reduction, all washed down with a crisp pink prosecco. I could have stopped there, utterly satisfied, but these were only the appetizers! To follow, we had the classic Osso Bucco Milanese with saffron risotto. It was rich with the herbaceous aroma of fresh rosemary and sage. Chef Filippo added a gremolata – a traditional condiment comprised of lemon zest and finely chopped herbs. He served this alongside the more modern Polip alla Moda, octopus grilled to perfection, the saline cephalopod pairing nicely with the spicy chorizo and sharp salsa verde, the crushed potato and cannellini beans in keeping with tradition. It could turn anyone previously put off by the eight-legged invertebrate into a believer. For those looking to branch out from the ubiquitous Thermidor, foodlovers’ favourite lasagna is updated with local spiny lobster in place of the usual Bolognese. At the height of lobster season, it’s a great way to maximize on the popular crustacean, so that everyone gets a taste. For dessert, a creamy Zabaglione served family-style with cantucci biscuits for dipping. This is the only restaurant on island (and we’re not short of Italian restaurants!) serving the North Italian sweet. The typical mix of sweet Marsala wine, egg yolks and cream is truly authentic, made in a traditional copper pan. An Italian favourite here in Bermuda for over 30 years.

a culinary journey Such Stuff as Dreams are Made On TEMPEST BISTRO / BY NADIA HALL

“Come unto these yellow sands, And then take hands.Curtsied when you have and kissed. The wild waves whist, Foot is featly here and there; And, sweet sprites, the burden bear’ William Shakespeare

As the tumult that wrecked the Sea Venture inspired Shakespeare’s The Tempest, so his words inspire St. George’s newest restaurant in the old carriage house. The former capital, where Sir George Somers and his men landed in 1609 after their ship wrecked at a nearby reef, is steeped with history, the lanes in the town still wide enough just for horses and carriages. There’s no denying the old charm of this UNESCO World Heritage site and this cobbled Water Street location is no exception. The old Carriage House has been turned over to new hands, given a makeover by the group responsible for the remarkable Mad Hatters in Hamilton. They have a refreshingly young kitchen, all under 30, with talents that belie their years. In fact, the staff is much of what make Tempest worth the journey to the East End. They aren’t short on personality, developing long lasting relationships with longstanding patrons. Using fresh, local and seasonal ingredients whenever they can, the Bermuda carrot soup is a stellar example of what the humble root can do, lifted by the allat-once fiery and mellow combination of a horseradish crème fraiche and sweet carrot ribbons. Scarpetta, a plate to share (or not) is a carefully considered mish mash of salty puttanesca sauce, sweet pea hummus, goat cheese and dukkah, an Egyptian side dish consisting of a mixture of herbs, nuts, and spices, served with toasted home made bread. Scarpetta means “little shoe” in Italian. Translated to the everyday vernacular, a lay person would understand it is as that hunk of bread you use to mop up the remaining sauce you wouldn’t dream of leaving on the plate. The naming a sort of confident presumption on their part that you would of course wish to lick your plate clean. For the Gravlax, the chefs employ a Scandinavian method for curing salmon using dill, red onion and our own Black Seal Rum. The sweet honey mustard is the correct condiment, a kind of “dark and stormy” you can really sink your teeth into. No lunch menu in Bermuda is complete without a fish sandwich. They’re version, the BABB, is a unique panko crusted fillet layered with Bermuda banana, creamed avocado cream and bacon on a fried slab of sweet brioche. It’s a serious contender for those on the hunt for the best the island has to offer.

eat & drink a culinary journey Much like its sister, Mad Hatters, each day brings new and exciting specials. They’ll always feature a burger and today they have a poutine, hand cut fries with gravy and cheese curds, that we unanimously agree is a must. No dessert menu, to speak of, the confections are reeled off like the specials. Deconstructed classics, like a raspberry cheesecake and lemon meringue pie are welcome takes on the traditional. At the turn of the season, let me recommend a warming banana bread and butter pudding with pockets of caramelized banana and an adorable jar of vanilla custard to pour over.

nightlife Kiwana Daniel: The Battender By Nadia Hall

Kiwana Daniel is warm and speaks gently, a welcome antidote to the rowdy regulars and colourful “characters” that frequent Woody’s. The bar draws a diverse crowd, more retirees and visitors by day, en route to Dockyard, following bold claims from the Westenders that their fish sandwich is, in fact, the best. With Lobster season upon us, they’ll come flocking for the thermidor. Nights draw a more energetic crowd. Kiwana finds the job “very entertaining. I like meeting people,” she explains, “Every day is different.” “If she’s not here, people don’t come,” I hear a loyal “character” call loudly from the back. She mimes, slamming on the brakes of her air-car, “Kim’s not working – turn around!” while laughing and steering the imaginary wheel. She’s been behind the bar at Woody’s for three years, recruited from Snorkel Park by former owner, Mr. Kim and the now-deceased Woody’s stalwart, Wendell “Pop” Cann. “I’ve had some good teachers,” she tells me, counting herself as a protégé of Philip Galloway, better known as “Stickman,” well known taxi operator and bartender, of Cambridge Beaches and long-gone Lantana. He passed away last year, a loss Kiwana found “very disheartening – He was “Mr. Bermuda”, so to speak. He pulled no punches.” And how does she deal with the challenges of the job? “I smile,” her expression following her words. “I don’t let it get the better of me. I learned that long ago.”

Flying Dragon: Bacardi Dragonberry, home made lemonade and sprite.

A Day at the Beach – her own creation: Bacardi Pineapple Fusion, Pineapple Juice, Blue Curaçao, a splash of Sprite “I tend to make drinks off the

cuff, so to speak.”

made in bermuda Alex & Pete’s Bermuda Artisan Ice Cream by Nadia Hall

“The rum is not a flavouring, it’s pure Gosling’s Black,” Peter Jovetic promises as I delve into his artisan ice cream. “A friend tried it and said, ‘This is the only ice-cream that’s had me sweating!’” The table is laid with 7 tubs of Alex & Pete’s distinctly Bermudian flavours and many spoons. St. George’s Black Rum and Ginger, St. David’s Black Rum and Raisin, Rum Swizzle, he speaks and I listen, moving from pint to pint declaring each new mouthful my favourite. Peter interviewed over 150 Bermudians in his quest for the perfect Old Fashioned Pineapple Sherbet. It could truly be described as a labour of love, taking 2 years and 32 attempts before settling on the final product. “The question I asked was: Do you remember what the old Simmons Pineapple Sherbet tasted like? I’ve come to the conclusion that if you put 20 Bermudians in a room and you give them a piece of paper and ask them to write down what Simmons Sherbet was like you will get a completely different answer from everybody. What I discovered is that for so many Bermudians it’s a trip down memory lane. The answer was always what they were doing while they were eating pineapple sherbet. I think it’s one of those cultural icons, a Bermudian love story.“ Just like the stories that inspired these unique flavours, theirs is a rich and heartwarming tale. Pete’s son, the Alex of Alex & Pete, has cerebral palsy, a physical disability affecting body movement, and the two have been making ice cream together at home for years. Pete found it wonderful for that quality father-son bonding and a useful tool for improving his son’s fine motor skills. “It’s difficult when you’ve got an Alex. Alex is very particular. He will only eat certain things. If it’s not good he won’t touch it. Alex was quality control!” A self-labeled “purist at heart,” there’s nothing artificial in this ice cream and you can taste the difference. The Chocolate Brownie Chunk is done with three parts chocolate and one part chocolate powder, resulting in a whopping hit of cocoa, unlike any of the leading commercial brands. From the homemade brownies to the caramel swirl to the ripple in the Riddell’s Bay, Pete makes all the inclusions himself, constantly testing new recipes. The pastel pink Rum Swizzle is a collaboration using Outerbridge’s Original mix. November sees the launch of their ongoing “Flavour of the Month” series, kicking off with a Thanksgiving inspired Pumpkin Pecan Crunch using roasted Bermuda pumpkin and pecans caramelized in maple syrup “to get them nice and crunchy.” They are currently working on bespoke flavours that will be exclusive to each Supermarket. Available at Lindo’s, Harrington Hundreds, Supermart, Miles Market, Meltdown Ice Cream Parlour and The Beach
