THE DISCOVERY of Bermuda
An Irish monk known as Saint Brendan the Navigator lived from 484 to 578 and according to legend was the first to discover Bermuda when he and 17 other monks set off on a seven-year voyage to the west where they may have reached Iceland, the Canary Islands, the Azores, as well as the Western Hemisphere. Saint Brendan claimed to have discovered the ‘isle of birds’ after sailing forty days westward from the Azores. Sadly, there is no evidence that St. Brendan discovered Bermuda more than 1,000 years before the wreck of the Sea Venture in 1609, however, the earliest descriptions of Bermuda all mention the Cahow birds which showed no fear of man and made cries like human speech. Is it therefore not possible that St. Brendan and his fellow monks were the first to set foot on the islands of Bermuda?
The Sea Venture, flagship of nine vessels heading in 1609 with 500 settlers to Virginia, found herself alone after the fleet ran into a hurricane near the Azores. With Admiral Sir George Somers in command and Sir Thomas Gates, Governor of Virginia on board, what happened is best described by William Strachy: “The clouds gathering thicke upon us and the winds singing and whistling most unusually, a dreadful storm and hideous began blow which swelling and roaring as it were by fits, at length did beat all light from heaven which like an hell of darkness turned black upon us so much the more fuller of horror . . . surely as death comes not so sudden nor apparent so he comes not so selfish and painful as at sea. For four and twenty hours the storm was fury added to fury.”
After five days and with everyone on board utterly despaired and about to face their death, Sir George
Somers shouted “Land” and was able to guide the Sea Venture hard on the reef to allow the entire company to debark safely. It was Friday, July 28th 1609.
A month and a day after the wreck of the Sea Venture, the keel was laid for a new ship to take the survivors to Virginia. With the Sea Venture still high on the reefs, most of the material for the new ship was salvaged from her. When the new ship was towed to the water
William Strachy wrote “When she began to swim upon her launching, our Governor called her The Deliverance.”
Meanwhile Sir George Somers decided to build a second, smaller, ship and called her The Patience.
On May 10th 1610 both ships were ready and set sail for Virginia, laden with salted pork and other supplies from Bermuda. On reaching Jamestown, they found the 60 surviving settlers desolate and starving. Thinking of the plentiful supply of hogs, fish and turtles, Sir George Somers decided to return to Bermuda and bring additional food to Jamestown.
Sailing back on The Patience, Sir George again encountered heavy storms and died of exhaustion on November 9th, 1610, at the age of fifty-six. After burying his heart in what is now called Somers Gardens in St. George’s, the body of this great adventurer was taken back to England on The Patience – the ship he helped to build only a year earlier.

EXPLORE FORTS Caves & Parks
Bermuda Forts are easy to find, in picturesque areas and you don’t have to be a history buff to enjoy them. Most have been restored, some are in parks, but all have gorgeous views.
Scaur
Hill Fort & Park
Somerset Road, Sandys
This fort was built to defend the Royal Naval Dockyard against the Americans during the war of 1812. Then in the 1940s, American guns defended the fort during WWII. While exploring, look for the deep gun pits and galleries which go deep into the hillside. The ramparts offer spectacular views of Ely’s Harbour and the Great Sound. Bus route 7 or 8 (operated between Dockyard and Hamilton)
Fort Hamilton Pembroke
Enjoy magnificent views over the City of Hamilton and its harbour. The upper levels and battlements have been landscaped with lawns, which make a fine place for a picnic. Entry is across a wooden bridge over the deep dry moat and there are plenty of cannons and ramparts inside. If walking from Front Street head east and take a left towards King Street. Walk up the steep incline of Kings Street and turn right to Happy Valley Road. Fort Hamilton is on your right.
Alexandra Battery
Ferry Reach, St. George’s Located next to Frobisher’s Building Bay, where the Deliverance was built in 1610 to take shipwreck survivors on to Virginia. The Battery was completed in the 1860s and features a 9-inch muzzle loader at the southern end. A 30 minute walk from the St. George’s town square, just past Gates Fort.
Martello Tower
Ferry Reach, St. George’s
The egg shaped fort was built in 1823 and features a moat, 9-11 foot thick walls of Bermuda stone, and a drawbridge. It is located on a hill at Ferry Reach Park, near Whale Bone Bay, a section of the Railway Trail and other coastal defence sites. Outside viewing only. A 30 minute walk along Ferry Road from Bus route 1, 3, 10 or 11.
Fort St. Catherine
St. George’s
Packed with historic exhibits, artifacts, and a well preserved interior, this stone built fort houses a museum and is one of Bermudas most impressive structures and in the old artillery store there is an exhibit of the fort’s development over four centuries. From Kings Square take Duke of York Street, take a left at Somers Super Market towards Duke of Kent Street. Keep going and you will reach Tobacco Bay. Fort St. Catherine is a 5 minute walk from there. and Hamilton)
Crystal Cave
Crystal Cave was discovered by accident in 1907 when two teenagers lost their cricket ball. Today it is one of Bermuda’s most popular attractions with its limestone stalactites and stalagmites. Pathways of floating pontoons span the deep, clear underground pools of azure blue water

EXPLORE FORTS, CAVES & PARKS
where formations seem to be mere inches below the surface. In fact they are over 50 feet below the surface of the crystal clear water. Bus route 1, 3, 10 or 11. Guided tours take place daily.
Fantasy Cave
Fantastic calcite formations make Fantasy Cave a mesmerizing experience. Entire walls of the cave are covered in calcite mineral deposits nature has shaped to resemble majestic waterfalls frozen in time. The deep clear pools reflect the formations and you can see the beginnings of the passageways connecting the caves with the ocean. A state-of-the-art lighting system highlights the intricacies and impressive detail of the formations. Bus route 1, 3, 10 or 11.

Nature Reserve
Hamilton Parish
There are several wet and dry caves, blue lagoons, mangroves and flora and fauna to explore at the Walsingham Nature Reserve,
also known as Tom Moore’s Jungle. The Causeway Cave in Blue Hole Park (part of the reserve) is the easiest to find and it’s free to enter. The Walsingham Cave is large about 200 meters. Walk the concrete path and steep stairs to the cave, but beware: it’s dark and can be slippery. Bring a flashlight and a bathing suit—you can cave swim here. Hiring a tour guide or asking for directions is recommended as there are many pathways that lead to this cave. Bus route 3
Abbots Cliff
Hamilton Parish
The park located at the northern side of Harrington Sound covers an area of about 18 acres and separated into two parts. From the ground level when you look up, you will see a green patch of land. There is an unmarked trail that goes through subtropical forests, banana patches and rises all the way up to the cliff top. Although the trail is quite steep, the Harrington Sound water views along the way are magnificent. You can access the trail from Abbott’s Cliff Road. Bus route 1, 3, 10 or 11

Known to locals as Tom Moore’s Jungle, this nature preserve is comprised of 12 acres of forests, caves and secret swimming holes. It’s one of the island’s prettiest, most secluded nature walks, featuring networks of paths and arching trees. It’s also home to a mangrove forest and less trafficked subterranean caves. In fact, the best discovery might just be adjoining Blue Hole Park, with its dark-blue pool of deep water. Entry to the park is free.
