dear visitor Greetings friends and welcome to Bermuda, We are delighted that you chose our island home as your vacation destination. We hope that your stay is highlighted with the sights, sounds and experiences of this vivid island. Beyond the beautiful, the pink, and the lush, Bermuda is a country steeped in history, art and culture that begs a closer look. The combination of British charm and island soul, along with friendly residents and fabulous scenery create a safe, comfortable open-air island-resort that compares to none other. Boasting the most golf courses per capita in the world, Bermuda is the ideal place to perfect your drive or putt. Our championship Port Royal Golf Course and its signature 16th hole also makes the course one of the world’s most picturesque. The UNESCO World Heritage site Town of St. George, is the oldest continuously operating English town in the Western Hemisphere. The town, situated at the water’s edge, with its cobbled-stone walkways, narrow lanes and traditional Bermudian architecture, represents a unique pairing of a ‘living historical museum’ and world-class yachting port. Hamilton, Bermuda’s business and retail center bustles with restaurants, retail shops, art galleries and historical landmarks worthy of a day’s excursion. A guided walking tour with the Town Crier lets you see areas of historical significance in the ‘back of town’ while enjoying a unique blend of urban and island chic. The South Shore continues to boast miles of pink-hued coastline, dotted with intimate coves and bays that we, and our visitors love. Beyond the world-famous Horseshoe Bay, the newly restored Gibbs Hill Lighthouse and our railway trails provide unique sightseeing alternatives to sand and sea. The Royal Naval Dockyard offers a variety of experiences in one location. From land and water excursions, a craft market, al fresco dining, beach activities, live entertainment, and more, all activities are in close proximity to one another. The Hall of History mural depicting Bermuda’s 400-plus years of existence is a ‘must-see’ amongst all of the activities on offer in the west end. Lastly, but not at all least, Bermuda’s surrounding waters and aquatic activities, including world-class big game fishing, shipwreck and reef diving, whale watching, boating, snorkeling and more are ideal island experiences. Bermuda and its people have much to share with you while you are here. We encourage you to get acquainted with the local charms and welcome you to share your fond memories with others living beyond our shores. Sincerely, BILL HANBURY CEO, BERMUDA TOURISM AUTHORITY

security associates Andrew Carmichael BERMUDA’S LEADING INNOVATIVE SECURITY COMPANY

Andrew Carmichael took the position as Security at Saltus School in March 2014. “After six years of spinning my wheels, I just wanted a change,” he said of his decision to leave the office environment for a more hands on occupation. He’s had a colourful past – living and working in Japan for years – and these experiences have shaped the very interesting man he is today. Passionate about carpentry, he’s accustomed to seeing a project through from start to finish and the school kids under his watchful eye can benefit from this focus as well as his wisdom. His main objective is to provide future security for his own son. Security Associates would like to recognize Mr. Carmichael for his excellent service as an important member of the team.

Crombie’s First Law of Bermudians BY ROGER CROMBIE

Those who travel widely will sooner or later prove Crombie’s First Law of Bermudians. Actually, it’s Crombie’s Only Law of Bermudians, but that doesn’t mean that, in time, other laws won’t follow. The Law is simple enough. It states that no matter where you go in the world, no matter how populated or remote the location, no matter what the circumstances, you will always run into at least one Bermudian before you leave. You might be strolling down a leafy boulevard in Rio de Janeiro; or staying at a cheap hotel in London; or having dinner in a noodle bar in Hong Kong or the finest restaurant in Tierra del Fuego; or climbing Mount Everest; or wherever. For some, Buckaroo Banzai’s dictum is the rule: no matter where you go, there you are. For everyone, however, Crombie’s First Law takes precedence: no matter where you go, there will be Bermudians. One would obviously expect this law to apply in Bermuda, where so many Bermudians are to be found. The truly remarkable fact about Crombie’s First Law, however, is that it applies around the globe and, for all we know, on other planets. By way of example, let me cite a few occasions on which Crombie’s Law has been proven. One summer, I spent several weeks in New York City. I didn’t see a Bermudian once, until I wandered down to 14th Street on my last day to buy some cheap underwear. In the shop were two Bermudians. I moved to Eastbourne, a smallish town on England’s south coast, a year ago and recently summoned the courage to visit a dentist. He had been employed in Bermuda and was married to a Bermudian, who happened to be in his office on the day I finally dragged myself in there. Last summer, I was watching a baptism ceremony being carried out on the beach in front of my apartment. Those being baptised were being dunked in the English Channel. Among the 30 or so participants in the ceremony was, of course, a Bermudian. Some years ago, I attended a giant street festival in Brooklyn, New York, along with some 300,000 other gawkers. Unsure whether Crombie’s First Law would apply in so vast a crowd, I asked a Bermudian to accompany me. As the two of us emerged from the subway system, standing at the top of the steps was another Bermudian. I once took a China Airways flight from London to Zurich. The flight had originated in Shanghai. Three of us joined the flight in London, to the general dismay of those who had already been on board for 14 hours. I was seated next to a Chinese-Bermudian. Crombie’s First Law only fails if you try to cash in on it. Betting strangers that there’s a Bermudian in the house will lead to regret, since Mother Nature will require the Bermudian to have left five minutes earlier. Mother Nature doesn’t like smart-ass party tricks, but, as we all know, she loves Bermudians.

explore Our Enchanting Island Paradise

JOHNNY BARNES Photo by www.moongateproductions.com

A Living legend, Johnny Barnes He’s the ultimate ‘morning person’ and a warm greeting from folk hero Johnny Barnes is the ideal way to start your sightseeing tour. Every weekday he’s at Crow Lane roundabout from 6am to 10am, showering city commuters with waves, blown kisses and a smile that could melt the heart of even the most jaded traveller. We begin our tour in the historic former capital, St. George’s. Wherever you go, don’t forget to greet all you meet: as Johnny reminds us each morning — it’s the Bermuda way!

Using our maps It’s easy to find your way around Bermuda. There are four main arteries: South Road runs along the south shore, North Shore Road hugs the north shore, Middle Road runs through the centre of the island and Harbour Road follows the inner harbour, across from Hamilton. Each road brings you into the city of Hamilton. Key attractions are numbered on our maps in this section and described in the text. In addition to the full key map of the island on pages 32 & 33 there is a large pullout map in the centre of this magazine; for a map of St. George’s, see page 19, the City of Hamilton on 24 and Dockyard on 34. ‘W’ at the end of a listing denotes ‘wheelchair accessible’.

Parishes In 1609 the survivors of the English wreck of the Sea Venture struggled onto Bermuda’s shores, well short of their intended destination of Jamestown, Virginia. By 1615 the Somers Island Company was developing Bermuda and exploiting her natural resources. The island was surveyed and what is now St. George’s Parish was set aside as public or company land. The remainder was divided into eight tribes or parishes, named after the principal shareholders in the Somers Island Company. These were, from east to west: Hamilton, Smith’s, Devonshire, Pembroke, Paget, Warwick, Southampton and Sandys. Along with St. George’s, they have become the nine parishes of Bermuda.

explore How Bermuda’s Caves Were Formed By Horst Augustinovic

Sinkhole

Sea Level

Cave & Lake

Limestone

Stalagmites and Stalactites Some 30 million years ago volcanic eruptions on the floor of the Atlantic formed a mountain approximately 13,000 feet high, reaching the surface of the ocean. Marine life and coral reefs began to inhabit this submarine mountain and during Ice Ages, when the sea level dropped, sediments calcified and eventually formed the limestone hills of Bermuda. Located in the older rocks close to the current sea level, Bermuda’s caves were formed during periods of low water levels during glaciation cycles of the current Ice Age. These cycles occur on 40,000 to 100,000-year time scales and we are now in an interglacial period following the end of the last Ice Age some 10,000 years ago. Sea level changes during various Ice Ages formed limestone caps interbedded with red soil. In time the chemical reaction between the limestone and water created channels and caves, the largest of which are in the Walsingham Formation located between Harrington Sound and Castle Harbour. Bermuda probably has more caves per square mile than anywhere else in the world. As we are between Ice Ages at this time, the sea level is high and many of Bermuda’s caves have lakes in them, resulting in stalagmites, which originally grew on the cave floor, now being underwater.

inspired by bermuda Alexandra Mosher Studio Jewellery Bermudian artist Alexandra Mosher draws from the island’s natural beauty to create inspired, sculptural jewellery. “I create expressive and original pieces; they’re certainly conversation starters,” she explains. “There is nothing more fascinating than taking art as we know it and giving it a whole new context on the body. I make sculptures to be worn.” Considering Alexandra’s background as an artist, it is no wonder her intricately sculpted jewellery designs have been influenced by her studies in fine art. “I developed a love for craft at a very young age, and was often creating little presents for my parents out of assembled found objects,” she told us. “My family still has a collection of pretty little things I made them.” Alexandra studied Studio Art at the College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts and later, Jewellery Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. She launched her line of jewellery in 2005 and since that time has won several prestigious awards for her collections. Her process involves the ancient technique of lost wax casting; she first hand carves her designs in wax and then casts them in silver and gold in limited numbers. “I remember reading an art critic’s review of my work and feeling like I was on the right path when he said he was surprised at how I could create such original pieces at such an affordable price.” Although her work is highly coveted, she has something for every level of collector.

Inspired by bermuda alexandra mosher studio jewellery

Alexandra is perhaps best known for her Bermuda Reef Collection in which she incorporates Bermuda’s famous pink sand into sterling silver and gold to create captivating pieces of wearable art. “‘Is it a gemstone?’ people ask me, and I just love watching their reaction when I explain how I’ve set our beautiful sand into each unique piece.” She told us that visitors often go on to say their daughter, sister or friend would never forgive them if they didn’t bring a little something from her pink sand collection back home as a gift. “It warms my heart to hear that,” she beams. Finding a little piece of your own is a delightful experience. You can find the lovely pink Alexandra Mosher Studio Jewellery Boutique in the Washington Mall at #7 Reid Street in Hamilton or some of her collections at A.S. Cooper & Son’s stores island-wide. art Highlights from The Young Collection at the Bermuda National Gallery By Lisa Howie, Director, Bermuda National Gallery

The John Hinson Young II and Nelga Vivian Young Collection was donated to the Bermuda National Gallery in 2005. Comprised of over one hundred works of art, the gift was accompanied by a significant endowment to provide ongoing care. The Young Collection is eclectic and reflects the collectors’ world travels and local interests. In this exhibition, we have selected artworks that share common cultural threads that communicate the universal human condition. From the Mexican artists we see sensitive attention to the figure, notably by art teacher Francisco Zuñiga. Parents from all cultures will identify with the tenderness of Felipe Casteñada’s mother and babe, while the warmth in Jesus Mariano Leuus’s family portrait is timeless. French artists Jean Dufy, François Gall and Elisée Maclet capture the spirit of Parisian life using different painting techniques however many will appreciate the energy surrounding national monuments and the calm of the café setting. Intricate details and careful compositions develop narratives from artists capturing completely dissimilar scenes. American Morris Broderson conveys a personal journey to the Far East by illustrating artifacts, while Canadian Gary Slipper creates a mythological environment filled with symbolism. American Fred Swan brings a vivid wintery Vermont scene to life while Spanish Martin Zerolo defies twodimension with a still life that is far from static.

Jesus Mariano Leuus, La Familia, 1995, acrylic on masonite. Collection of the Bermuda National Gallery. Gift of John Hinson II and Nelga Young.

Jean Dufy, Horse and Carriage in Front of Arc de Triomphe, nd, oil on canvas. Collection of the Bermuda National Gallery. Gift of John Hinson II and Nelga Young.

Chinese Yuan Yunfu merges cultural art theories using pen and ink and watercolours and French Michel-Henry dramatizes a simple arrangement of flowers. More abstractly, Italian Nicola Simbari lays a brilliant and heavy palette to a Mediterranean seascape while Bermudian Charles Lloyd Tucker uses similar hues to captures scenes from our Island home. Highlights from The Young Collection celebrates the diversity of global expression while taking us on a visual journey that conveys the interests of these most generous art collectors. The experience continues to the Queen Elizabeth Park on Queen Street where sculptures from the collection are on also display.

Nicola Simbari, Marina in Forio, 1973, oil on canvas. Collection of the Bermuda National Gallery. Gift of John Hinson II and Nelga Young.

Join us for an art experience. Take away a memento with a BNG art book. Exhibition tours on Thursdays at 10:00 am. golf “Growing the game of golf through love” BY KIM SWAN, J.P. TEACHING PROFESSIONAL

February is the month for Cupid, St. Valentines, Flowers, Chocolates and it reminds me of the decades of staging couples golf events, which brought people from overseas to Bermuda to play golf at Port Royal Golf Course and the former St. Georges Golf Course. Mostly married couples from the United States, Canada and a few from Europe where the game of golf has become part of their lifestyle. They shared a passion for the game of golf and Bermuda - they encouraged their friends to join them and have pictures in their homes reminding them of Bermuda - they love golf in Bermuda. At Port Royal we have adjusted to the life as the host of the PGA Grand Slam of Golf and are now preparing to live up to the quality billing of being a premier golf course that previously played host to the world greats. History has shown us through the example of Mid Ocean Club - that a world rekonwn quality golf course that maintains its high standards - will have people from all over the world seeking to play the same golf course graced by the world’s great modern players. The rebroadcast on the golf channel of the 2014 PGA Grand Slam which aired in January 2015 was a great way for Port Royal Golf Course and Bermuda to start the New Year. Personally, to have Port Royal shown around the world again, even caused some of my old golf colleagues to reach out to say hello. More importantly, Bermuda looked most inviting on the screen, it must have been especially enticing for American experiencing severe winter storms that are wreaking havoc. GOLF FOR ALL AGES As we at Port Royal Golf Course look to build on the solid foundation of the PGA Grand Slam of Golf our immediate focus is akin to the theme of February - Love. Our experience has demonstrated that love of the game is a key ingredient to grow the game of golf. In that regard, through Port Royal Golf Developmental Program we are reaching out to encourage more families to golf at Port Royal Golf Course. Our program is encouraging golfers as young as 3 year old PeeWee juniors through to retirees to golf for the first time, enjoy the game, learn the game and continue playing the great game of golf. Our coaching and tournaments are also centered around socializing to enable persons to feel comfortable and welcome playing golf. What better place to learn than one of the finest public golf courses in the world. It is no coincidence that our fine restaurant and bar - Bella Vista Grill - has gained an outstanding reputation for its fine food, service and ambiance. A great way to cap off a fun filled day at Port Royal. Come visit us, experience the mystique of Port Royal Golf Course and you may fall in love with golf in the meantime.

Historic Architecture at Salt Cay, Turks and Caicos By Dr. Edward Cecil Harris, MBE, JP, PHD, FSA

The White House on Salt Cay is the largest building of Bermuda vernacular architecture in the Turks and Caicos and is thus of significance to our building heritage, being erected by a member of the local Harriott family of the second quarter of the nineteenth century (all photos by Jeffrey Klee).

While their boating technology did not allow native Americans of the eastern sectors of North and South America to reach Bermuda, the newly invented Bermuda Rig and accompanying Bermuda Sloop allow Bermudians in the later 1600s to reach into those regions, as well as into the Caribbean Sea and its archipelago of easterly islands. Of particular interest were the lands at the southern end of the Bahamas landmass, known as the ‘salt islands’, comprising Grand Turk and Salt Cay. Bermudians were attracted to those islands, now part of the Turks and Caicos. They used the salt there for a circular trade between the West Indies, Bermuda, and north to Nova Scotia and the British American colonies on the east coast of what became part of the United States. The sloops took stone, cedar and people to the Turks Islands early in the year and shipped salt north a few months later, to trade for salted fish from the Canadian Maritimes and also into the East Coast in exchange for essentials items for Bermuda. Thus some of the mineral for the great ‘salt cod’ industry in the north came from the Salt Islands via Bermudian merchants. Eventually, Bermudian families and individuals settled on Grand Turk and Salt Cay, so as to exploit the salt for more extended periods each year in the late eighteenth century and into the nineteenth. In terms of architectural style, many

The Government House on Salt Cay was apparently built in two phases, probably starting in the late 1700s. It has been under restoration for the last few years.

historical stories heritage matters

The kitchen at the read of Government House is similar to others on Salt Cay, all having the large Bermuda chimney to accommodate the flues of both a bread oven and cooking hearth.

of the buildings in those islands exhibit characteristics of the unique vernacular architecture of homeland Bermuda. The largest expression of that transfer of building design is the White House on Salt Cay, likely built by Bermudian Daniel Harriott in the 1840s, perhaps consequent to his marriage to a member of the Dean family of the Turks Islands. The other buildings in the idiom, also of stone, are a number of Bermuda-style kitchens, with large chimneys, separated from the main houses, which were largely of timber. A number of those buildings, now historic due to the passage of time and of their designs, have survived on Salt Cay and so it was in December 2014 that a small team from the National Museum of Bermuda and Colonial Williamsburg were invited by Georgia and Bill Belk (she is a Harriott descendant) to visit Salt Cay and examine the White House and other buildings from an architectural history perspective. The scholars from Williamsburg were Edward Chappell (who has spent a goodly part of the last 25 years studying houses in Bermuda) and Jeffrey Klee. The examination and putting on record in measured drawings and architectural notes by the team included two churches, the White House, the Brown House, Government House and several smaller dwellings of workers or owners of smaller holdings of the salt ponds, or ‘salinas’, as they are there called. The project on Salt Cay raises the question of whether such recording might be extended to Grand Turk and South Caicos, so as to create a reasonable archive of the architectural history of the Turks Islands and South Caicos in the 1700s and 1800s.

There are a number of smaller historic homes on Salt Cay: at this one, the original Bermuda-style kitchen was separated from the main house by an open passage, now covered by a tin roof.

historical stories Do You Know… About the Bermuda Dioramas? Part 4 By Horst Augustinovic

In 1950 a series of eleven Dioramas showing scenes from Bermuda’s early history were created by the Belgian artist Emil Antoine Verpilleaux and the Polish sculptor Andre Bohomolec after much collaboration with historians Commander Leslie Howarth, Walter Hayward, Hereward Watlington and Dr. Henry Wilkinson. These Dioramic Tableaux are reproduced in three dimensions by placing figures and objects in front of a painted background. The Dioramas were initially exhibited at the ‘Bermuda Cavalcade Gallery’ on Front Street in Hamilton and after they were purchased by the Bermuda Trade Development Board in 1952, they became part of a display in Fort St. Catherine, also featuring replicas of the Crown Jewels, various wax figures featuring life in a military fort as well as Boer War carvings. Unfortunately the Dioramas were destroyed during renovations in 2010.

REPULSE OF THE SPANIARDS With fifty settlers on board, The Plough reached Bermuda in 1612. Sent by the Virginia Company, The Plough was under the command of Richard Moore, Bermuda’s first Governor. He at once created a permanent settlement on this isolated and uninhabited island, keeping in mind the need to supply food from Bermuda to the important settlement in Virginia. First of all shelters had to be built and defences erected against the possible invasion by Spaniards who were expected to claim this strategically important island for themselves. Having neglected Bermuda for decades, the Spaniards did get concerned when they heard exaggerated tales of the immense wealth, especially from pearl diving and the discovery of ambergris, which could be found on this small island. Besides, they resented the fact that Bermuda was being settled by the hated English, and after some hesitation it was decided to uproot the settlement once and for all. At first the Council of War suggested that the Atlantic Squadron be dispatched to Bermuda, however, it turned out that those ships were urgently needed to convoy the returning plate ships back to Spain. Next King Philip III suggested that Diego Ramirez go to Bermuda before continuing on to Havana, but now it was too late in the year, as his fleet could not sail until the following spring. Instead a Portuguese captain returning from La Plata was told to reconnoiter Bermuda, but he reported that he passed the island too late in the season to stop. Finally it was Captain Domingo de Ulivari who, in March 1614, decided to test Bermuda’s defences on his return from San Domingo.

The Norwood Surveying Bermuda Dioramma

What happened next was described as follows: “from the King’s Castle Master Moore made but two shot, which caused them presently depart. Mark here the handy-work of divine providence for they had but three quarters of a barrel of powder and but one shot more and then powder by carelesnesse was tumbled downe under the mussels of the two pieces, were discharged, yet not touched with fire when they were discharged.” Having hardly any powder and only one shot left, it was certainly providential that the Spaniards decided to leave. A November 1614 proposal by the Spanish Council of War to invade Bermuda in April 1615 with 3,000 soldiers did not materialize. The diorama shows the scene from Castle Island where Richard Moore is directing the fire. The Spanish ships are in the distance about to take off following this unexpected reception. NORWOOD SURVEYING BERMUDA Richard Norwood came to Bermuda in 1613 at the age of 23 to try his luck as pearl diver. Not finding any pearls, he put his talents to something more useful – surveying the island. Actually a man called Bartlett was supposed to survey Bermuda earlier but when then Governor Richard Moore realized that no provision had been made for him to receive shares, he refused that survey to continue. When Daniel Tucker became Governor in 1616 he asked Richard Norwood to proceed with his survey, instructing him to divide Bermuda into 8 Tribes – now called Parishes – each to be sub divided into fifty 25-acre shares, keeping in mind that one quarter of the land had to remain public land, including St. George’s, St. David’s, Longbird, Smith’s, Cooper’s, Coney and Nonsuch Islands. A considerable scandal arose over the ‘Overplus’ in Southampton. Governor Tucker had been promised three shares as a reward for taking charge of Bermuda and apparently asked Richard Norwood to keep a lookout for some good land for him. When Norwood reported seeing “a beautiful valley of fair and lusty soyle’ at the far end of the main island, Governor Tucker instructed him to continue his survey from the east end so that his ‘Overplus’ ended up being in “the beautiful valley” in Southampton, rather than Boaz Island. The Diorama shows Richard Norwood and his assistant Caldicott on Gibbs Hill, now the location of Gibbs Hill Lighthouse. Comments: Horst Augustinovic, netlink@link.bm

your table awaits Where Simplicity is Master GRIFFIN’S BISTRO, ST. GEORGE’S CLUB / BY BELCARIO THOMAS

Nestled inside the UNESCO world heritage site of St.George’s sits Griffin’s Bistro, a restaurant, bar & lounge led by the ever charming Chef Piero Casalicchio. A new 2015 menu draws inspiration from Bermuda’s finest seasonal ingredients with a twist of international flair in multiple, unique dining areas offering expansive views. Former fashion guru and owner of 26 successful restaurants in NYC and Boston, Chef Casalicchio’s journey to Bermuda was, like the man himself, a bit unconventional. Retired and sailing around the Caribbean, Casalicchio arrived on the island into a big storm system, stranding him for several months allowing new friendships to turn into opportunity. Now, after 2 full seasons in Bermuda, he also runs the popular Beach House at Fort St Catherine (open summers only) and is excited to usher in a new style of simple, culinary excellence to the east end.

just desserts Roses are Red RED STEAKHOUSE & BAR / BY NADIA HALL

“If I could tell you about Red I would sing to you of fire Sweet like cherries Burning like cinnamon Smelling like a rose in the sun” -Dixie Dawn Miller Goode, Rainbows Around Us Red – the colour of love, passion, and the official banner of St. Valentine – makes a fitting title for a romantic dessert date spot. A celebration of love calls for nothing less than champagne and their Moet & Chandon Brut Impèrial Rosè is the perfect blush pink for the occasion. A blend of three wine varieties with an emphasis on Pinot Noir, it embodies a fruity and daring character with good intensity and a fresh minerality. Not too dry, not too sweet, this subtle rosè is notable for its balance and fine texture.

HOLIDAY CHEESECAKE TRIO Cinnamon Heart | Bailey’s Milk Chocolate | Vanilla with a Honey-Berry Compote Chef Chad Mitchell has created a cheesecake trio to match the mood. First bite, the creamy confection is infused with the flavour of cinnamon hearts, those itty-bitty red heart candies consumed by the mouthful, said to tingle your heart along with your tongue. It’s a fitting match to this lively, aromatic champagne. It’s full bodied and zestful with an assertive fruitiness. Loved for its wild strawberry aroma, the second bite, traditional vanilla with a honeyberry compote matches the flavour profile, with undertones of biscuit and ginger to complement the honey tuile garnish and sweet cracker base. And what is Valentine’s without chocolate? The final bite is of Bailey’s Milk chocolate, the sweet Irish cream a willing contender to the smoke-tinged minerality of the rosè. Chef Chad Mitchell grew up in Ontario “cooking a lot of game” and sourcing ingredients from local farmers. He tries to maintain that practice here in Bermuda, buying locally and in season, wherever possible, and preferring to choose what catches his eye before ‘bringing it back to see what [he] can do with it.” His approach is often to play with different textures, resulting in a sensory treat for the most sensual of holidays.

a bermudian tradition The Art Mel’s Fish Sandwich ART MELS / BY NADIA HALL

Swizzle inn South ShoRe

Art Mel’s is an institution. A dear friend that I’ve known for over half of my lifetime had finally made the trip over from London. A dream guest, an easy-going, low-maintenance sort of guy – his demands had been simple: he just wanted to catch up, relax and eat some good food. The only real specific: a fish sandwich and a ginger beer.

& b a i l e y ’ S b ay

Bermuda’s premier pub and restaurant and home of the Rum Swizzle

Naturally, we went to Art Mel’s. I chose the newer, St. George’s location, Spicy Dicy, to allow time to explore The Olde Towne. Arthur Smith, Art himself, is a taste of the old Bermuda and I’ve often heard him described as a “Real Bermudian,” a role model, hard working, honest and open-hearted. Averse to promotion and advertising, he operated for years in his Monica’s Road branch without even a sign above the door, with faith that the quality of his product would draw a loyal crowd. “If you do it well, you don’t have to do anything at all,” he instructs.

The Art Mel’s Fish Sandwich continued...

in after the lunch rush and she took a break from her post to entertain my son while I sat in a booth to feed both belly and brain, gaining important life lessons from her father. We spoke of a Bermuda past that valued community and a greater purpose. We both opted for the classic fish sandwich, a hefty doorstop, with hot sauce, tartar sauce and coleslaw on the softest homemade raisin bread. It was, quite simply, the best. My friend, I have to tell you, has a relentless sweet tooth. No meal is complete without dessert and the torrential downpour provided another excellent reason to stay for more. Their almost-but-not-quite-as-famous ginger bread is everything you want a cake to be. Moist and fluffy with the perfect balance of ginger and sweet. It’s been such a full afternoon that I tell Mr. Smith I’ve enjoyed our time together more than his celebrated fish sandwich. “Really?” he asked me, surprised. Well, I reassess, it’s a close second. 9 ST. MONICA’S ROAD, HAMILTON 441 295 3965 WATER STREET, ST. GEORGES 441 297 3965

made in bermuda Walker Christopher by Nadia Hall

Love, as they say, is a two way street and as our fellas rush to provide the standard flowers and chocolates to stay in our good favour, it can be easy to forget that they too need a little romancing. Walker Christopher is a unique jewellery store, known for their carefully selected diamonds, engagement and wedding rings – their custom made jewellery and ancient coins and artifacts reimagined as wearable art. Owner, designer and goldsmith, William Wivell is a local gem. An avid and passionate collector, he specializes in crafting one-of a-kind pieces incorporating museum-quality artifacts. Pieces that are as rich in style as they are in history, they could make even Philemon feel like Adonis. Bill’s collection of authentic coins make stunning yet still masculine pendants. A very knowledgeable collector, he can take you on a voyage through time as you choose from gold doubloons, sea-salvaged pieces of eight or Greek and Roman coins dating back to 350 B.C. On an island built from the survivors of wreckage – there are over 150 known shipwrecks surrounding our shores – a piece of treasure recovered from a sunken galleon makes for a wonderful keepsake. Coins from the East India Company’s Princess Louisa that sunk in 1743 or the famous Atocha that was struck by a hurricane in 1622 are some of the prizes you can expect to find in Wivell’s collection, for whatever floats your boat. Ancient Egyptian scarabs and cylinder seals are set in gold alongside some, ahem, ancient erotica. For those looking for something more modern, contemporary currency is given a colourful makeover in bright, jewel-like enamels and fashioned into cufflinks. And don’t forget the Walker Christopher Signature Bermuda Collection featuring Hog Shilling pendants, cufflinks and tiepins. These pieces are inspired by the many beautiful icons and motifs of Bermuda and are available in 14kt or 18kt yellow or white gold.
