dear visitor Greetings friends and welcome to Bermuda, We are delighted that you chose our island home as your vacation destination. We hope that your stay is highlighted with the sights, sounds and experiences of this vivid island. Beyond the beautiful, the pink, and the lush, Bermuda is a country steeped in history, art and culture that begs a closer look. The combination of British charm and island soul, along with friendly residents and fabulous scenery create a safe, comfortable open-air island-resort that compares to none other. Boasting the most golf courses per capita in the world, Bermuda is the ideal place to perfect your drive or putt. Our championship Port Royal Golf Course and its signature 16th hole also makes the course one of the world’s most picturesque. The UNESCO World Heritage site Town of St. George, is the oldest continuously operating English town in the Western Hemisphere. The town, situated at the water’s edge, with its cobbled-stone walkways, narrow lanes and traditional Bermudian architecture, represents a unique pairing of a ‘living historical museum’ and world-class yachting port. Hamilton, Bermuda’s business and retail center bustles with restaurants, retail shops, art galleries and historical landmarks worthy of a day’s excursion. A guided walking tour with the Town Crier lets you see areas of historical significance in the ‘back of town’ while enjoying a unique blend of urban and island chic. The South Shore continues to boast miles of pink-hued coastline, dotted with intimate coves and bays that we, and our visitors love. Beyond the world-famous Horseshoe Bay, the newly restored Gibbs Hill Lighthouse and our railway trails provide unique sightseeing alternatives to sand and sea. The Royal Naval Dockyard offers a variety of experiences in one location. From land and water excursions, a craft market, al fresco dining, beach activities, live entertainment, and more, all activities are in close proximity to one another. The Hall of History mural depicting Bermuda’s 400-plus years of existence is a ‘must-see’ amongst all of the activities on offer in the west end. Lastly, but not at all least, Bermuda’s surrounding waters and aquatic activities, including world-class big game fishing, shipwreck and reef diving, whale watching, boating, snorkeling and more are ideal island experiences. Bermuda and its people have much to share with you while you are here. We encourage you to get acquainted with the local charms and welcome you to share your fond memories with others living beyond our shores. Sincerely, BILL HANBURY CEO, BERMUDA TOURISM AUTHORITY

security associates Richard Zuill BERMUDA’S LEADING INNOVATIVE SECURITY COMPANY

After 41 years working for the Bank of Bermuda as a Mortgage Officer, Mr. Zuill took early retirement. Not long after, while shopping at Gorham’s, he was approached by Mr. Carlton Crockwell, CEO of Security Associates. Their friendly encounter led to an interview and he was soon recruited as a Security Officer. Mr. Zuill went on to represent the team at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for four years and then moved to the XL building for another three. While he’s really enjoyed working with the group over the past seven years, the time has come for him to return to his retirement plans. First assignment, a trip to El Paso Texas with his lovely wife in honour of their 44th wedding anniversary.

Don’t get your bread where you get your potatoes... BY ROGER CROMBIE

There’s a saying: don’t get your bread where you get your potatoes. It translates as a warning not to date those with whom you work. I disagree. People at work know things you don’t, and by dating one of them, you might find those things out. They also know what everyone else is saying about you, and take great pleasure in passing it on. In Bermuda, as always, it’s slightly different. You don’t need to hear the gossip at work; it’s usually in the Gazette. We spend a very large part of our waking lives at work, where we are in close contact, all day long, with those of the opposite persuasion. Many of them are as presentable at work as is humanly possible, especially in Bermuda. You know each other, so most of the standard early-stage lying required for successful dating is pointless. Plus, if you work long hours, where else are you going to meet people? At a bar, in the dark, surrounded by loud music and drunks? Not optimal, is it? With the exception of the odd job I held in Bermuda, therefore, I routinely ignored the warning. This approach produced mixed results. I had my share of girlfriends, but I then had to have my fair share of new jobs because employers can and will fire you for enjoying an office romance. My greatest achievement in this field was dating the boss’s secretary. It was initially more her idea than mine. She couldn’t resist the British accent (this was in Washington, DC). We talked work all day and all evening, and I would have become sick of it, only she was a lovely woman and we shared the crazy gene, and so got up to all kinds of wild nonsense. In the fullness of time, she drifted away from me as fast as possible, and drifted into the arms of the boss, a man 30 years her senior, and quite forgetful. They married. After leaving Washington, I didn’t see either of them for 20 years, at which point I spent a weekend at their house in California, celebrating a wedding. At a bar, catching up, the three of us discussed old times. That’s when the weirdness set in. My ex told all kind of tales about the mad things we had done together, only in every story, wherever I had featured, her husband had been installed in my place. My being her boyfriend had been expunged from the record, and the boss was credited with my experiences. At first I thought my ex was being funny. But it became clear that the boss had such a bad memory that he had accepted her stories as gospel. She appeared to have brainwashed herself into believing them too. Did I say anything? Nope. If they were happy reliving my past, who was I to burst their bubble? So somewhere out west is a couple who believed they lived my life. Perhaps I should start believing I lived theirs.

the versailles butterfly & The Renaissance Women BY NADIA HALL

Long time friends and collaborators, photographer Amanda Temple and jewellery designer Alexandra Mosher, have come together once more, this time to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Bermuda Festival. Eternally passionate about the arts, particularly ballet, Amanda Temple was the perfect choice for creating the official programme artwork. Her ongoing “Lumiere” portrait series is a luminous journey through her fertile and fantastical mind. With full creative control and a wide-open framework, where do you go when the realm of possibilities reach lengths as boundless as your imagination? “I was keen to portray a renaissance of sorts,” she reflects, “to create a magnificently elaborate image that portrays ballet’s intensity and encapsulates all the arts coming together.” She called on local dancer Samantha Hollis as muse and, while visions of violin playing fairies danced in her head, she found herself looking for ways to include the traditional ruby within the image. Speaking to fellow visionary Alexandra Mosher to provide samples of the precious gem, the pair soon realized the best way to include the stone was to make it tangible. A keepsake and glimmering symbol of metamorphosis, Alexandra created the Ruby Anniversary Butterfly, cast in Sterling Silver and set with a single red ruby. Her oxidizing process creates such a stunning array of patinas that mirror the light in Amanda’s work and her signature aluminium prints. The final image is a stunning and ambitious composite of over 30 layers. A graceful Samantha on pointe balances artfully on a balcony at the Palace of Versailles beneath a heavenly Paget sky. “The Versaille Butterfly” is available for purchase on canvas, aluminium or small notecards. Each piece is unique and made to order. Alexandra’s Ruby Anniversary Butterfly is also available for purchase as a pin or pendant, in three different finishes, all inscribed with the festival logo. The festivities kick off on Friday the 23rd of January, bringing in some of the most popular performers from festivals past as well as new and exciting world-class talent. Renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma will be headlining.

bermuda festival of performing arts January 23 - March 8 WWW.BERMUDAFESTIVAL.ORG

“To entertain, educate and inspire through the medium of the Performing Arts, presenting performances by artists of outstanding talent in a festival of diverse cultural appeal”. Bermuda 2015 basks in the ruby glow of 40 continuous years of outstanding performances by celebrated international performers. Thanks to the vision of Yehudi (later Lord) Menuhin, former Governor of Bermuda, Sir Edwin Leather, and founding chairman, John Ellison, the inaugural Bermuda Festival burst into life in 1976 and ever since Bermuda has annually enjoyed a culturally diverse collection of performances from a steady flow of illustrious performers. We have chosen to look back over those years and to celebrate them by inviting back some of the most popular performers who have established a special relationship with the Island. From workshops with the tiniest of children, to master classes for adults, to collaborative performances, the opportunities provided for local residents by these performers have been rich and varied and it is a pleasure to see some of them return to share in our celebration. We are deeply grateful for the unwavering support we have received from the local corporate community over the 40 years, and for the support of individual donors who dig deeply into their pockets to help our cause. Please take a moment to reflect on 40 magnificent years of Bermuda Festival and help us to ensure the next 40 years!

explore Our Enchanting Island Paradise

JOHNNY BARNES Photo by www.moongateproductions.com

A Living legend, Johnny Barnes He’s the ultimate ‘morning person’ and a warm greeting from folk hero Johnny Barnes is the ideal way to start your sightseeing tour. Every weekday he’s at Crow Lane roundabout from 6am to 10am, showering city commuters with waves, blown kisses and a smile that could melt the heart of even the most jaded traveller. We begin our tour in the historic former capital, St. George’s. Wherever you go, don’t forget to greet all you meet: as Johnny reminds us each morning — it’s the Bermuda way!

Using our maps It’s easy to find your way around Bermuda. There are four main arteries: South Road runs along the south shore, North Shore Road hugs the north shore, Middle Road runs through the centre of the island and Harbour Road follows the inner harbour, across from Hamilton. Each road brings you into the city of Hamilton. Key attractions are numbered on our maps in this section and described in the text. In addition to the full key map of the island on pages 32 & 33 there is a large pullout map in the centre of this magazine; for a map of St. George’s, see page 19, the City of Hamilton on 24 and Dockyard on 34. ‘W’ at the end of a listing denotes ‘wheelchair accessible’.

Parishes In 1609 the survivors of the English wreck of the Sea Venture struggled onto Bermuda’s shores, well short of their intended destination of Jamestown, Virginia. By 1615 the Somers Island Company was developing Bermuda and exploiting her natural resources. The island was surveyed and what is now St. George’s Parish was set aside as public or company land. The remainder was divided into eight tribes or parishes, named after the principal shareholders in the Somers Island Company. These were, from east to west: Hamilton, Smith’s, Devonshire, Pembroke, Paget, Warwick, Southampton and Sandys. Along with St. George’s, they have become the nine parishes of Bermuda.

On May 1st, 2002, the Bermuda General Post Office issued 4 postage stamps to commemorate Bermuda’s Caves. The photography was by Gary C. Berdeaux and the liner information was written by David Summers. 35¢ – The Fantasy Cave was discovered in 1907 by Arthur Elystan Haycock. From 1912 until 1931 the cave was open to the public as ‘Wonderland Cave’. In 1999 the cave was redeveloped and reopened to the public in 2001 under its original name ‘Fantasy Cave’. Crystal Cave

inspired by bermuda Alexandra Mosher Studio Jewellery Bermudian artist Alexandra Mosher draws from the island’s natural beauty to create inspired, sculptural jewellery. “I create expressive and original pieces; they’re certainly conversation starters,” she explains. “There is nothing more fascinating than taking art as we know it and giving it a whole new context on the body. I make sculptures to be worn.” Considering Alexandra’s background as an artist, it is no wonder her intricately sculpted jewellery designs have been influenced by her studies in fine art. “I developed a love for craft at a very young age, and was often creating little presents for my parents out of assembled found objects,” she told us. “My family still has a collection of pretty little things I made them.” Alexandra studied Studio Art at the College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts and later, Jewellery Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. She launched her line of jewellery in 2005 and since that time has won several prestigious awards for her collections. Her process involves the ancient technique of lost wax casting; she first hand carves her designs in wax and then casts them in silver and gold in limited numbers. “I remember reading an art critic’s review of my work and feeling like I was on the right path when he said he was surprised at how I could create such original pieces at such an affordable price.” Although her work is highly coveted, she has something for every level of collector.

Inspired by bermuda alexandra mosher studio jewellery

Alexandra is perhaps best known for her Bermuda Reef Collection in which she incorporates Bermuda’s famous pink sand into sterling silver and gold to create captivating pieces of wearable art. “‘Is it a gemstone?’ people ask me, and I just love watching their reaction when I explain how I’ve set our beautiful sand into each unique piece.” She told us that visitors often go on to say their daughter, sister or friend would never forgive them if they didn’t bring a little something from her pink sand collection back home as a gift. “It warms my heart to hear that,” she beams. Finding a little piece of your own is a delightful experience. You can find the lovely pink Alexandra Mosher Studio Jewellery Boutique in the Washington Mall at #7 Reid Street in Hamilton or some of her collections at A.S. Cooper & Son’s stores island-wide. art Exploring the Landscape By Lisa Howie, Director, Bermuda National Gallery

Bermuda has a long-standing tradition of landscape art, which is no wonder considering how absolutely stunning the Island is and how magical the light. It is handy that the rooftops are blinding white as they serve the perfect canvas to reflect the sunset. Painters have been putting up their easels outside to capture the bliss for centuries now. With this history in mind, many artists today are breaking from the traditional forms of landscape art by arriving at their own stylistic vernacular or language of expression. For this new exhibition, Marking Territory: A Focus on Bermuda’s Landscape, BNG curator Sophie Cressall selected from diverse portfolios of artwork created since 2010: “This exhibition is a respectful departure from the tradition of landscape art. It is an examination of the new marks being explored today, some of which may not be predictable or as easy to ‘read’ because they are new expressions. Some works exhibited have a direct connection to the digital era while others actively repel these influences. This exhibition explores how artists articulate the landscape around them today – whether it is through the use of technology, the manipulation of the image, the construction of the form or the composition.” Come and be surprised by expressions of a landscape that you have come to love albeit for a day or for a lifetime. These paintings, photographs, video and print by local artists will inspire you to creativity or, at least, rethink the landscape outside your door. For those who prefer traditional art forms, The Ondaatje Wing is replete with impressionistic paintings mostly by well-known American artists like William Chadwick, Reynolds Beale, Prosper Senate. Interestingly, the works by these artists would have been considered new ways of expression during their day. Join us for an art experience. Take away a memento with a BNG art book. George Alan Swanson 1908 – 1963 Large watercolour The Square, St Georges. 17 x 22 inches. c1936 The 1930s was a particularly exciting time for Bermuda as famed naturalist William Beebe pierced the waters off Nonsuch Island in the Bathysphere, making amazing marine discoveries. George Swanson, Else Bostelmann and Helen Tee-Van were among a group of fine illustrators depicting hundreds of fish and other species seen in the deep ocean. Swanson also painted on land and even ran his own art school for a while in St Georges. This colourful sketch shows his leisure-time style. Price on request. the artist No Man Is An Island Charlie Godet Thomas By Nadia Hall

Charlie Godet Thomas, Untitled (A Form Fading Amongst Fading Forms No. 1), 2014, digital print on satin photographic paper. Collection of the artist.

“You should always be trying to write a poem you are unable to write, a poem you lack the technique, the language, the courage to achieve. Otherwise you’re merely imitating yourself, going nowhere, because that’s always easiest.” – John Berryman Reflections on water, the sky moving through the trees while driving, a boat moored in shallow waters, collected over the years, these images have been edited together to the soundtrack of Charlie Godet Thomas’s Blues Poem, a video installation that plays the internal monologue of the artist’s fictional poet. The piece, originally inspired by a television interview with confessional poet John Berryman, paraphrases philosophers Sartre and Seneca – big ideas for an afternoon at the gallery. The use of soothing imagery alongside serious verse aids the viewer in accepting material that is otherwise challenging. Each time it loops, you absorb something more, it’s pleasantness and pastel pink frame acting as vehicles for delivery. This entry for the 2014 Bermuda Biennial “A View From the Edge” is exploring the idea of an island as a psychological state. By inserting this character, this poet, the idea takes shape. Images and ideas collected over time without method can make demands on the collector that cannot always be met. This constant editing

and reducing, exemplified across Charlie’s portfolio, makes concise that which is interminable. Just as artistic control is an essential quality of good poetry, the same level of control can bring the artist closer to what he is trying to communicate. These personal snippets or half-truths are saved and the re-presented to be understood later. The final frame, hypnotic, like a swinging pendulum – or a windscreen wiper – draws you in further, asking questions. Speaking of questions, a candycoloured loop punctuates a stark white background. Untitled (A Form Fading Amongst Forms No. 1 & 2) two striking images are in fact a photograph of earlier sculpture works of the artist. They are abstractions, originating as family photographs, reconstructed into three-dimensional form and then re-photographed and reprinted. The works appear minimal, but this strategic process reaches depths that far belie first impression. “The process of reworking and revisiting an image is not a search for reason or understanding, but rather a manifestation of denial,” he explains. “Repainting and reconfiguring the image in the way that I do is an attempt to transform it so that I can enjoy it as colour and form, whilst failing to achieve that aim is reason to continue working on the series.” Charlie Godet Thomas lives and works in London. An alumnus of the Royal College of Art, he recently exhibited in Bending Light at HomePlatform in Bristol, Dizziness of Freedom at Bermondsey Project Space, London and a solo show at BALTIC Center for Contemporary Art in Newcastle, United Kingdom. www.charliegodetthomas.com

golf Port Royal Welcomes America’s Cup BY KIM SWAN, J.P. TEACHING PROFESSIONAL

Bermuda awareness as a destination is a critical component to marketing Bermuda internationally. Our forefathers successfully built our tourism around world renown sporting events , mainly Golf, Sailing and Tennis which are all great sports for Bermuda year round. Through golf in the late1950s Bermuda played host to televised golf prior to the famed Shell’s Wonderful World of Golf later gracing our shores in the 1960s - we were pioneers and our most celebrated Golf Professional at that time Archie Compston walked with royalty and was an golf exhibitionist dating back decades prior. Tennis fans from the eastern seaboard of the United States had Bermuda to thank for Tennis. Yes, our own Bermudian cousin, Mary Outerbridge, introduced Tennis to the United States. That would make for a great ATP Heritage Tournament that not only celebrates our place in history but reconnects us perpetually with each generation of tennis enthusiast from America. The Newport Bermuda Yacht Race is a century old event and our maritime heritage is already etched in the history books. But the Gold Cup Series and the exploits of Peter Bromby and Lee White in recent years and others, have kept Bermuda on the radar of the sailing community. The PGA Grand Slam of Golf finale in Bermuda was eventful - sandwiched between two hurricanes - Bermuda and the PGA of America demonstrated how to make the best of a bad situation. Hurricane Fay surprised everyone with as it crept up on us early Sunday a ravaged Port Royal Golf Course, television equipment, concession stands, the tented village and made many doubt that the event would take place. The Show Must Go On The decision that the event will continue, set in motion a restoration of the port royal golf course and tournament services that must go down in our history book as an undertaking that demonstrated to the world the resilience of our people but also the quality of our infrastructure. When TNT went live to show the world Port Royal Golf Course, it was extremely difficult to discern any evidence of any major damage caused by a hurricane. An incredible feat that showed Bermuda at its best. Today we have the America’s Cup 2017 destined for our shores which will catapult our name to the front of the minds of people around the globe. Awareness in marketing is key and now in two of our key sports, golf and sailing, Bermuda can be identified by hosting the best in the world competing in their craft. My experience in the golf industry reveals that it is common for spill over benefits between sports. The followers of sailing are likely to be avid golfers or tennis players, enjoy fine wine, dine in good restaurants, engage taxis regularly, travel to the beach, arrange parties/events for clients &/or friends - generally they have a reasonable amount of disposable income. We at Port Royal Golf Course are considered one of the best public golf courses in the world. It is my understanding that Port Royal is on the bucket list of many planning to come to Bermuda to enjoy the festivities of the Americas Cup. As one of my dear sailing friends of mine put it recently, “there is only so much time we spend on the water racing......” Indeed, many man hours of the America’s Cup will revolve around activities on land in Bermuda. We at Port Royal who overlook the Great Sound - not only welcome the America’s Cup to Bermuda - but we invite everyone planning visit Bermuda for the America’s Cup to pay us a visit. Port Royal and the Bella Vista Grill are your local championship golf course.

historical stories The Bermuda Militia Artillery and the Great War By Dr. Edward Cecil Harris, MBE, JP, PHD, FSA

This image was captioned ‘Bermuda Contingent R.G.A. 1916 to 1919. Somme July 16 to Nov.18. Vimy 1917. Messines 1917. Ypres June 1917 to Jan 1918. Operations in France and Flanders from July 1916 to Nov 11 1918. Returned to England April 1919.’

Soon after the old Queen’s Birthday in May 1916, a convoy left Bermuda that included a ship with over two hundred black Bermudians soldiers and their white officers, off to the Great War in Europe. On 9 June, the English coast was sighted and the commander of the First Contingent of the Bermuda Militia Artillery (Royal Garrison Artillery) commented: ‘Well, we’re about to see how the native Bermudian from the land of eternal peace can adapt himself to the brutalities of war…I believe that our men have the guts.’ The Contingent received orders to proceed immediately to France and arrived on 24 June 1916. ‘All Bermudians were under fire a few days later when they were engaged in the attack of the Somme, 1 July.’ That was the day the epic ‘Battle of the Somme’ began; it ended in mid-November, with the loss of over a million men killed or wounded, ‘making it one of humanity’s bloodiest battles’. After service into late autumn, the Bermuda Contingent felt the effects of a European winter and Major Thomas Dill, commanding, obtained leave for the men to refresh themselves in the ‘salubrious climate of the South of France’, at Marseilles. In 1917, they returned to the Western Front and acquitted themselves ‘heroically during the attack on Vimy Ridge’ on 9 April. At the end of June, forty more men and two officers arrived from Bermuda and thus increased the strength of the force.

In the spring of 1897, a flyer sought to enroll ‘a few more young men’ in the Bermuda Militia Artillery, promising ‘military training and a Summer’s holiday’.

64

In December 1917, Field Marshall Sir Douglas Haig noted: ‘This contingent served with the Canadian Corps during the operation in May and June, subsequent to the capture of Vimy Ridge. They were employed on Heavy Ammunition Dumps, and great satisfaction was express with their work. Though called upon to perform labour of the most arduous and

exacting nature at all times of the day and night, they were not only willing and efficient but conspicuous for their cheeriness under all conditions. Their officers rendered valuable services in the management of the dumps.’ ‘The unit also worked on ammunition dumps from end of June to the beginning of September in another Corps. On more than one occasion the dumps at which they were employed were ignited by hostile shellfire, and much of their work was done under shellfire. Their behaviour on all these occasions was excellent, and commanded the admiration of those with whom they were serving. In fact the manner in which they carried out their work under all conditions was strikingly good.’ The Bermuda Contingent returned home to a tumultuous welcome on 1 July 1919, three years after they had set sail as volunteers for a conflict of unknown proportions. The Bermuda Militia Artillery was formed in the mid-1890s and centered in St. George’s Parish, which had most of the big guns of the Island that the BMA would later command. In 1965, after 70 years of service, the BMA was amalgamated with the Bermuda Rifles into the Bermuda Regiment, a proud corps that in 2015 celebrates its fiftieth anniversary of service to the Island.

The Bermuda Military Artillery served Bermuda for several generations from its establishment in the 1890s until its amalgamation into the Bermuda Regiment in 1965: here men of the BMA are practicing gunnery during World War Two at the 6-inch guns at St. David’s Battery, which was also their base camp.

historical stories Do You Know... About the Bermuda Dioramas? Part 3 By Horst Augustinovic

In 1950 a series of eleven Dioramas showing scenes from Bermuda’s early history were created by the Belgian artist Emil Antoine Verpilleaux and the Polish sculptor Andre Bohomolec after much collaboration with historians Commander Leslie Howarth, Walter Hayward, Hereward Watlington and Dr. Henry Wilkinson. These Dioramic Tableaux are reproduced in three dimensions by placing figures and objects in front of a painted background. The Dioramas were initially exhibited at the ‘Bermuda Cavalcade Gallery’ on Front Street in Hamilton and after they were purchased by the Bermuda Trade Development Board in 1952, they became part of a display in Fort St. Catherine, also featuring replicas of the Crown Jewels, various wax figures featuring life in a military fort as well as Boer War carvings. Unfortunately the Dioramas were destroyed during renovations in 2010.

STRACHY’S WATCH William Strachy was Secretary to Sir Thomas Gates, Governor of Virginia. He was a trained scribe and keen observer and it is to him that we owe much of our knowledge of the saga of the Sea Venture. William Shakespeare is thought to have used William Strachy’s descriptions as the basis for The Tempest. When Sir George Somers and Sir Thomas Gates made plans for the completion of the voyage to Virginia after the wreck of the Sea Venture, the only available craft was the longboat in which they had come ashore from the wreck. After outfitting the longboat with hatches, a mast and sails for the ocean voyage, eight of the survivors sailed to Virginia only a month after the disaster, promising to return with help from Virginia. When four weeks passed without their return, William Strachy kept watch and beacons burning for another two months from a spot where the St. David’s Lighthouse stands today. It was to no avail, as the longboat was never heard from again.

historical stories do you know...

BUILDING OF THE DELIVERANCE On August 28th 1609 – a month and a day after the wreck of the Sea Venture – the keel was laid for a new ship to take the survivors to Virginia. With the Sea Venture still high on the reefs, most of the material for the new ship was salvaged from her. On March 30th 1610 the new ship was towed to the water where William Strachy wrote “When she began to swim upon her launching, our Governor called her The Deliverance.” Meanwhile Sir George Somers decided to build a second, smaller, ship and called her The Patience. On May 10th 1610 both ships were ready and set sail for Virginia, laden with salted pork and other supplies from Bermuda. On reaching Jamestown thirteen days later they were shocked at the condition of the few colonists who had survived the previous winter. On the other hand the remaining 60 Virginians must have been amazed at the excellent condition of the 150 new arrivals they had believed lost almost a year ago. Given the dire conditions in Virginia, Sir George Somers volunteered to sail back to Bermuda in The Patience and return with a cargo of hogs and other foods which were plentiful in Bermuda. Unfortunately he again ran into bad weather and after arriving in Bermuda several weeks later, Sir George Somers died of exhaustion. The Diorama shows great activity in building The Deliverance, which was of great significance in the history of both Bermuda and Virginia. Comments: netlink@link.bm

This full-scale replica of the ‘Deliverance’ was erected by the Bermuda Junior Service League on Ordnance Island in St. George’s in the late 1960s to commemorate the building of the original ‘Deliverance’ under the direction of Sir Thomas Gates and the ship’s carpenter Richard Frobisher. the perfect pairing

Meet Joe Cabassa GLOBAL BRAND AMBASSADOR FOR WILLIAM GRANT & SON BY CANDICE DICKINSON

“Bartenders need to know what they’re selling,” explains Joe Cabassa as he puckers his lips, enjoying the first sip of his Gin Blossom martini. “They must own it,” he continues. A bartender can make a dish simply by suggesting the perfect pairing. Cabassa worked for years as part of a training team with the popular Hard Rock Café, teaching dozens of bar managers, bartenders and servers the tricks of the trade; imparting his wisdom on spirits and beverage knowledge, bar management, and the art of mixing cocktails. Today Cabassa travels the world, representing family owned and operated William Grant & Sons, as brand ambassador for the single malt Scotch whisky brand Glenfiddich and specialty gin Hendricks, among others. The Gin Blossom, created with Hendricks Gin, Triple Sec, cucumber, lime and apple juice is “an ideal cocktail to start with,” Cabassa explains. “The subtle sour flavours in this cocktail will open your appetite. It has a good amount of alcohol and it’s not too sweet while the acidity is well balanced.” Reviewing the lunch menu at Bolero, Cabassa searches for the perfect dish to pair it with. “The Tomatoes,” he says with a smile. “The coriander botanicals in the Hendricks will compliment this dish. The oil may make it a little creamy but the acidity should be enough to cleanse the palate. A thoughtful pairing should enhance all of the flavours in a dish just right.” GIN BLOSSOM Hendricks Gin, De Kuyper Triple Sec, cucumber, lime & apple juice THE TOMATOES Cumin, coriander, basil, red onion, Manchego, ciabatta & olive oil.

It is an authentic Britishstyle pub with great comfort food and tasty and unique gastro pub-style dishes. The historic building the Frog & Onion is housed in (a Cooperage), was completed in 1853 after the war of 1812. The provisioning of wooden ships during the days of sail required that almost all eatables be packaged in barrels or casks so they could be man-handled, loaded and stored in the cargo areas of the ship. Empty water casks needed to be taken ashore in ships’ boats for refilling at the watering place. The cooperage space and adjacent Victualling Yard were converted to five storehouses in the 1940s and now finds itself home to The Frog and Onion, a fine victualling establishement. your table awaits

Bringing the Family Together PORTOFINO / BY NADIA HALL

You’d be forgiven for thinking that Portofino, with its extensive menu of classic dishes, was just your average family Italian. The cozy wooden, table clothed interior, with walls displaying rolling countryside vistas, create that intimate familiarity and it excels in providing those household favourites to generation after generation. This popular and reliable, family friendly spot is the go-to for group dining, but I’d encourage even those bound to having “the usual” to venture off-piste – Chef Filippo Vianello has an insatiable appetite for new dishes, often experimenting at home tonight with tomorrow’s dinner specials. He demonstrates his camera-ready flair for the unfamiliar in the kitchen, at first offering grilled diver scallops wrapped in pancetta, the Italian bacon. The traditional Sicilian side, “caponata,” is updated with butternut squash, in lieu of the original eggplant. It’s sweet and salty and perfect for the Fall season. This was only the beginning of what was soon to become a veritable feast. He lays it on thick, birthday thick, presenting his Straccetti di Manzo, thinly sliced beef tenderloin laid on a parmesan crisp with oyster mushrooms and a rich ruby Barolo reduction, all washed down with a crisp pink prosecco. I could have stopped there, utterly satisfied, but these were only the appetizers! To follow, we had the classic Osso Bucco Milanese with saffron risotto. It was rich with the herbaceous aroma of fresh rosemary and sage. Chef Filippo added a gremolata – a traditional condiment comprised of lemon zest and finely chopped herbs. He served this alongside the more modern Polip alla Moda, octopus grilled to perfection, the saline cephalopod pairing nicely with the spicy chorizo and sharp salsa verde, the crushed potato and cannellini beans in keeping with tradition. It could turn anyone previously put off by the eight-legged invertebrate into a believer. For those looking to branch out from the ubiquitous Thermidor, foodlovers’ favourite lasagna is updated with local spiny lobster in place of the usual Bolognese. At the height of lobster season, it’s a great way to maximize on the popular crustacean, so that everyone gets a taste. For dessert, a creamy Zabaglione served family-style with cantucci biscuits for dipping. This is the only restaurant on island (and we’re not short of Italian restaurants!) serving the North Italian sweet. The typical mix of sweet Marsala wine, egg yolks and cream is truly authentic, made in a traditional copper pan. An Italian favourite here in Bermuda for over 30 years.

Local Wheatgrass Shot Equivalent to eating 3 lbs of leafy greens, a shot of wheatgrass is packed full of toxin removing, cancer fighting properties.

A Farmer Walks Into a Bar DEVIL’S ISLE KITCHEN & BAR / BY NADIA HALL

One head among many, Greg of Bermuda Greens pushes through the buzzing dining room, obscured by what can only be described as a lush, green, overgrown lawn on a tray. This grass on a plate is Bermuda grown wheatgrass and we’re witness to the daily delivery before it takes pride of place on the mantle behind the counter. Chef Matthew Pridham swears by it and drinks the earthly sweet “shots” daily. Their “farm to table” philosophy is clearly present in all they offer, from the wheatgrass and sprouts to the open fridge packed with colourful, fresh vegetables for their cold pressed juices. A Bermuda Micro Greens Salad features Tucker’s Farm Goat Cheese, when in season, and Devil’s Isle has its own plot of land that should see them growing their own come summer. Local “Green Thumb” Omari Dill is tending to their garden. Devil’s Isle is named after their pre-existing, successful Coffee business, that in turn took inspiration from the island in its original raw, uncharted and unpopulated state. Historically known as the Isle of Devils, Bermuda, and its wild cacophony of sounds heard from the ocean, was steeped in mystery. They aim to make everything from scratch. Not only their own-roasted coffee beans but their ketchup and other condiments are all made internally. They smoke their own sustainable Scottish salmon and the sandwich is served on your choice of bread, freshly baked in house. Miraculously, their gluten-free focaccia rivals their gluten-full offerings. Spiked with fresh herbs and sun dried tomato, the breadmaker’s father, a wellknow baker in Austria, perfected the recipe. The side salad is their signature Kale Caesar. Unlike your average creamy, iceberg offering, theirs has chopped kale, baby spinach and aged parmesan tossed in a light smoky bacon Caesar vinaigrette. The original Caesar, Matthew informs me, was an oil-based recipe. The croutons are, you guessed it, toasted chunks of their own bread. The dinner menu offers food in “Small” or “Large Plates.” “We want people to come and socialize,” he explains the method. “You go for dinner and want to try everybody else’s!” This way you can get a little bit of everything you fancy or, if you prefer, a lot. New to the menu are oysters fresh from the East Coast. Friday nights see the downstairs deli transformed into an Oyster and Vodka Bar. The perfect setting with its stark, white, French butcher tiles, the design was a collaboration with Kaitlyn Cowan of Isolated Designs – a subsidiary of the eponymous surf and skate shop. Devil’s Isle Kitchen & Bar seems to be ticking so many boxes, you’ll wonder how you were eating and drinking before it came along.

The Peppered Saphire was created by Bartender Tristan Mosley Lee who honed his skills at the Island Restaurant Group, experimenting during the quiet day shifts at Hog Penny. “I wanted to make a savoury cocktail. I chose everything around the basil and bell pepper. The sweet citrus and honey accentuate, while the fresh lemon evens out the sweetness. I chose the Bombay because two of the main botanicals in this gin are lemon peel and coriander seed. 441 292 3284 / 16 Burnaby Street, City of Hamilton

made in bermuda Bermuda Rocks Jewellery by Nadia Hall

Let me introduce you to Ashley, a hand made engagement ring set with 24 small diamond “bricks” and a 1-karat center stone. The design is inspired by the unique structure of a Bermudian Moon Gate. Eleanor Patton, a goldsmith from London named the ring after the friend who introduced her to her Bermudian husband. Forget the moon. This beauty sparkles like the sun! “The Halo style ring is growing in popularity and this was a way of incorporating that style using a personal and Bermudian twist on it,” Eleanor explains. She enjoyed being able to use her signature Moon Gate design in the engagement collection. “They pair so neatly.” Originally of Chinese design, Moon Gates were incorporated into the architecture of Bermuda in the late 19th century. Legend has it that newlyweds who step through the circular gates will be blessed with good luck. The rings in the collection are all named after Eleanor’s friends and family, “the amazing ladies in my life,” she gushes. I may have appeared worried about the potential limits to a growing collection because she then added, “Don’t worry. There are a lot of amazing women in my life!” A lover of all things vintage, she knows her periods, favouring looks from the 30s and 40s over the contemporary. Her own ring, a family heirloom, is a far cry from the dazzling Ashley. “The engagement collection is more about modernizing classic styles,” she explains. Engagement rings are such a unique purchase. It has to be something that really speaks to you.” With no impending nuptials to speak of, and not one to be left out, we start making plans for my perfect “right hand ring” with champagne diamonds in place of the ubiquitous clear. Diamonds, I’m learning, are commonplace and unexciting for someone in the know. Eleanor believes there’s an untapped market for the untraditional here in Bermuda. At our meeting she’s wearing a large cocktail ring, featuring black sea glass, flanked by champagne diamonds. It’s a standout peace, and a shining example of her craftsmanship. “When I first visited Bermuda [soon to be husband] John took me to the sea glass beach in Dockyard. It was breathtaking – stunning! I felt it needed to be treated like a precious object, which is why I set it in the same style I would a precious gem.” Eleanor worked for a goldsmith in Bristol that specialized in bespoke engagement rings. She is fully trained in gold, platinum, palladium and silver and is very knowledgeable, available for full consultations, imparting her expertise on all metals and gems. Pearls, I notice, feature heavily and are incorporated generously in the Moon Gate collection. “Pearls are just a classic. I love pearls. Everyone should have pearls.” She reflects, “it comes from a personal obsession with pearls.” These white baubles are very popular with bridal parties. This is undoubtedly a fitting marriage (excuse the pun) with luxury florists, Petals, who will showcase her collection and have created a signature bouquet to match each engagement ring. www.bermudarocks.com
