dear visitor Greetings friends and welcome to Bermuda, We are delighted that you chose our island home as your vacation destination. We hope that your stay is highlighted with the sights, sounds and experiences of this vivid island. Beyond the beautiful, the pink, and the lush, Bermuda is a country steeped in history, art and culture that begs a closer look. The combination of British charm and island soul, along with friendly residents and fabulous scenery create a safe, comfortable open-air island-resort that compares to none other. Boasting the most golf courses per capita in the world, Bermuda is the ideal place to perfect your drive or putt. Our championship Port Royal Golf Course and its signature 16th hole also makes the course one of the world’s most picturesque. The UNESCO World Heritage site Town of St. George, is the oldest continuously operating English town in the Western Hemisphere. The town, situated at the water’s edge, with its cobbled-stone walkways, narrow lanes and traditional Bermudian architecture, represents a unique pairing of a ‘living historical museum’ and world-class yachting port. Hamilton, Bermuda’s business and retail center bustles with restaurants, retail shops, art galleries and historical landmarks worthy of a day’s excursion. A guided walking tour with the Town Crier lets you see areas of historical significance in the ‘back of town’ while enjoying a unique blend of urban and island chic. The South Shore continues to boast miles of pink-hued coastline, dotted with intimate coves and bays that we, and our visitors love. Beyond the world-famous Horseshoe Bay, the newly restored Gibbs Hill Lighthouse and our railway trails provide unique sightseeing alternatives to sand and sea. The Royal Naval Dockyard offers a variety of experiences in one location. From land and water excursions, a craft market, al fresco dining, beach activities, live entertainment, and more, all activities are in close proximity to one another. The Hall of History mural depicting Bermuda’s 400-plus years of existence is a ‘must-see’ amongst all of the activities on offer in the west end. Lastly, but not at all least, Bermuda’s surrounding waters and aquatic activities, including world-class big game fishing, shipwreck and reef diving, whale watching, boating, snorkeling and more are ideal island experiences. Bermuda and its people have much to share with you while you are here. We encourage you to get acquainted with the local charms and welcome you to share your fond memories with others living beyond our shores. Sincerely, BILL HANBURY CEO, BERMUDA TOURISM AUTHORITY

Roland Skinner’s Picturesque Bermuda BY NADIA HALL
“We should all be posting pictures everyday.” Roland Skinner says firmly. “And encourage people to share. When you post pictures and share it spreads like a wildfire.” Roland Skinner is insistent, fully aware of the power of a single image. There’s no denying we live on an extremely photogenic island, but Skinner has a unique eye, capturing beautiful moments that are otherwise intangible. The way the light catches the side of a chimney, pink, candyfloss skies, the breeze blowing through pampas grass, that moment when the wave breaks on the rock. “Sometimes I’ll find something and go back when the light is right,” he tells me, never without his camera in tow. He recently sustained a knee injury climbing one of the aforementioned rocks. It’s hard to believe that this man is the grandfather of grown grandchildren. I ask him how long he’s been doing this. “All my life. [Laughs.] All my life. I’ve never had a real job.” Despite his short resume, he’s clearly doing something right. He takes me through the images, each one more beautiful than the last and our interview, too, becomes wordless. There’s nothing quite like a spectacular view to find yourself sitting in a comfortable silence with a relative stranger. Afterwards, he calls at the office to tell me that a visitor who purchased one of his Picturesque books put it on display at her Rhode Island beauty salon. Since then three of her clients have visited Bermuda separately after flicking through the pages. The latest book, nearly 200 stunning photographs categorized as “Sand & Sea,” “Architecture,” “Landscape” and “Skyline” features concise captions by Somers Cooper to help contextualize these otherworldly scenes and acts as a kind of field guide for visitors looking for pleasing vistas. “The water up there is beautiful,” he gushes, pointing at a picture taken at Pompano Beach in Southampton where the sand bar is famous for its crystalclear, shallow waters. “All kinds of different things catch my eye.” Faced with a photograph of the rock face on the shoreline, he continues, “I like this picture too, even though there isn’t much in it. See the heart in the middle. That’s what caught my eye.” “Then we get the rough seas. When the wind is in the North and the waves come in on the south, it takes the tops and it blows it back and it looks almost like hair.” The experience has clearly made him very attuned to what’s going on with Mother Nature. You can see the seasons pass in his portfolio. Boiler reefs on the South Shore, Bermudianas in bloom, overgrown railway trails and late summer sunsets. “You can’t be be selfish,” he states with conviction, perhaps the attitude that first drove him to share these shots at the start of his career. “You have to think. Somebody might like something abstract; somebody might like something that’s not. Some people love architecture. That’s all they want. Some people like flowers. That’s all they want. You really have to have something for everyone.” His gallery has recently moved location from the Walker Arcade to A.S. Cooper’s Main Store on Front Street. When he’s not shooting on location, you can find him there, signing books and prints. All four Picturesque books are available at Cooper’s, Brown & Co. and The Bermuda Bookstore. His publishers can also offer alternate covers for the same book, perfect for corporate gifts, hotels or private parties. The Picturesque Gallery is located inside A.S. Cooper & Son, Ltd., at 59 Front Street, City of Hamilton

Known as Victoria Day (after Queen Victoria) and Empire Day, Bermuda Day’s traditional events include a series of exciting and fast paced road races (cycle race, roller blade race and runners) on courses that stretch between Somerset in Sandys Parish and Pembroke Parish (halfmarathon distances). All races take place in the morning beginning at 9:00am. The Bermuda Day Parade, held in the afternoon, winds through the streets of the City of Hamilton beginning at 1:00pm. GEORGE’S The impressive Gothic vestige that looms over the town of St. George’s was begun in 1870 as a replacement for St. Peter’s, which had fallen into a state of serious disrepair. Designed by William Hay, the Scottish-born architect who later drew the plans for Hamilton’s cathedral, the St. George’s church was abandoned in 1899 when near completion. From Kings Square (town center of St George), it’s a bit of an uphill walk to Unfinished Church (takes about 15 minutes) but worth the trip! See the St. George’s map on page 37. EAT A SPICY DICY FISH SANDWICH AT ART MELS Art Mel’s is a local Bermudian hotspot serving absolutely enormous, amazingly delicious fried fish sandwiches. Its Hamilton location is off the beaten path for the average tourist, located at 9 St. Monica’s Road in Pembroke) however its new St. George’s location is right on Water street in the Olde Towne. The Art Mel’s fish sandwich has been raved about world wide and, in fact it was cited The Best Fish Sandwich on Earth by a popular food critic website. If you’re headed to St. George’s you can sit inside or take your sandwich to go and sit off at one of the many scenic locations near by.

lili bermuda Bermudiana BY NADIA HALL
“Perfumes go through their cycles. They’re fashionable, they go out of style and then they come back. And these are little black dresses.” “I very much compare perfumes with music” Isabelle Ramsay-Brackstone begins. “It would be like saying, I’ll give you a music sheet of a Bach Concerto and I’ll have it played by two different violinists and, of course, they won’t play it the same way.” She has such a wonderful way of explaining the process of an outwardly enigmatic craft. Having trained with the previous perfumer of 40 years, she took over the Bermuda Perfumery ten years ago, breathing new life into an aging institution. “Since I became perfumer, I was more interested in really capturing seasons and emotions about Bermuda as a sense of place and how it defines our lives, more than specific botanicals, which was what the perfumery was about when it was created,” she explains. She has since launched over twelve new fragrances to add to the collection, this year reintroducing the classic 6: Easter Lily, Bermudiana, Frangipani, Jasmine, Oleander and Passionflower. “They are the same formulas and fragrances from when they were created, but what I’ve done is I’ve infused quality and a little bit of modernity. I said, where can I add dynamics and beautiful spirit to it? In essence, we are bringing back those classics of Bermuda but with a really nice 2015 flair.” May in Bermuda sees the Bermudiana in full bloom. This small member of the Iris family is Bermuda’s national flower, its distinctive purple flower and bright yellow centre appearing for weeks in the spring. An aromaless blossom in actuality, the perfumery’s fragrance is an abstraction created in the 70s with the characteristic citruses that began to appear at the time. “This one is very green,” Isabelle explains, “bermudianas don’t smell like anything so this is what we call an abstract flower that we are resurrecting.” Its profile is very green. She lists them off, note-by-note, wielding her tapered fragrance test strip like a wand: green leaf, grass, citruses, green apple and some wood as well. “And that’s some galbanum [an aromatic gum resin] – very green, a bit powdery, a bit melon as well. This one is definitely is drier. It’s probably my most modern of all, my Bermudiana. “Perfumes go through their cycles. They’re fashionable, they go out of style and then they come back, she reflects, “and these are little black dresses!” It’s not unusual to find a bit of foot traffic at the perfumery, excited guests stopping in to see the “composer” at work, all the while sharing their own experiences. And it’s no coincidence that the perfumery attracts these visitors and their personal tales. The olfactory system has long been understood as the strongest of memory triggers. There’s definitely validity in certain scents affecting emotions chemically. “People feel so much more connected when they can see you, share pictures with you and emotions and time. It’s a big thing, you know,” Isabelle adds, eschewing the notion of the common department store fragrance hall in favour of a more personalized experience. They have been mixing handcrafted fragrances at Stewart Hall since 1928 and it’s a privilege to see this tradition continue in her capable hands. bermuda ha ha Bermuda... Has Insurance BY ROGER CROMBIE
Insurance is a big deal in Bermuda, as visitors may not know. Jamaica has Bob Marley; Barbados has Crop Over; Bermuda has insurance. For many years, as a reporter on the insurance beat on the Island, I interviewed everybody who was anybody and a few people who were hardly anybody at all. The interviews were always fascinating, for one reason or another. The best would be like conversations with friends. Some of the subjects were wary of reporters and would test you out, to see how much of their attention you deserved. On one occasion, I was interviewing an insurance medium-biggie about this and that. Or maybe it was something else. I forget. “After the hurricane season,” he said, “comes the earthquake season”. To be a reporter, it helps if you know nothing. Otherwise, when something happens that requires your professional efforts, you would already have an opinion about it, and be unable to render a neutral report. To be an insurance journalist, therefore, it follows that you have to know nothing about insurance. I know very little, but I’d never heard of an earthquake season. Hurricane season, sure. Atlantic hurricanes, potentially very costly events covered by Bermuda’s insurance industry, arrive in the summer and fall months. Then the gravitational wossername changes, and you don’t have hurricanes in February, essentially. See, I told you I knew very little. So this business of an earthquake season was a problem. My brain raced through the possibilities. The first thing that came to mind was that maybe there actually was an earthquake season, and nobody had told me. If my interviewee wanted to talk about it, I’d have to pretend to know something I didn’t. Or, perhaps the fellow was simply wrong. Let’s face it: of all the occupations in the world – pilot, explorer, mountaineer and sex fiend, for example – this dude had chosen insurance. That meant he wasn’t a risk-taker, so he probably knew his stuff before he opened his mouth. (There are people like that; you just don’t meet them very often.) Maybe earthquakes were affected by the pull of the moon or photodiagnostics or some other scientific stuff. In the next split-second, I went through the earthquakes that I knew about and the months in which they had taken place. The trouble was that I didn’t know the month in which any of them occurred. I had been in a couple of slight ‘quakes myself. One was in March, but that didn’t help very much. No time remained for thinking. As a desperate last resort, despite this being insurance, I wondered if he might be joking. Yes, I decided, that was it. He was kidding me. “I didn’t know there was an earthquake season,” I said with absolute certainty, as if there couldn’t be one because I’d never heard of it. He looked at me for a moment. “Of course there isn’t, you fool,” he said, and then we were all haw-haw and slappy each other on the knee-clappers. Deep joy.

made in bermuda A Breath of Fresh Air BY NADIA HALL
“To me the tropics are just where man survives best.” Christine Watlington has created a beautiful calendar that draws to light the amazing flora and fauna that Bermuda has to offer, in twelve colourful vignettes. After recent hurricanes felled our trees and whipped the flowers from their stems, the island is somehow different from the thick, lush jungle we’re familiar with. The proverbial slate has been wiped clean and upon meeting Christine, she presents me with a branch from the loquat tree, the plump fruits presenting themselves a little earlier than expected. “It was like a false spring. I have a friend who has first loquats and mulberries that are early,” she tells me. “There are so many incredible fruits you can grow and that grow wild in Bermuda,” leafing through pages of her Field Guide, Bermuda’s Botanical Wonderland, she lists them off. “Like the cherry and the loquat and the prickly pear – they’re all edible – the paw paw, the banana, bay grape makes fantastic jelly, lemon and lime, this is soursop that they call the sugar apple here.” Christine is in awe of those master artists that have passed before her. There’s a spirituality about her that transcends traditional religion. It’s a sort of philosophical appreciation or awareness of there being something more powerful or greater than she. In researching, I noticed a distinct longevity in the lives of these botanical illustrators, many of them thriving well into their 90s, close to 100. When I asked her why she thought this was the case, she said that perhaps it is that love of nature. I imagined that it was probably the meditative, therapeutic nature of the drawing, the focus and the discipline. She believes it’s just the fresh air; nothing that man could create alone. Nothing that man is in control of. “I personally think it brings you so close to creation,” she insists. First enchanted while illustrating a thesis at the Lindley Library, a library linked with the herbarium at Kew, she’d pour through leather bound volumes from early botanical travellers. “They have all the collections of the first botanicals and dried specimens that were collected by the early plantsmen, the people that were on the ship with Darwin,” she explains. Her voice is so even and temperate, yet she speaks with this wildness, like something out of a period piece, from another time. “Darwin and the Beagle, Captain Cook’s collections, really primitive sketches, they had the Hooker fruits. Joseph Dalton Hooker lived at Kew, worked for the royals and did the most beautiful plates. There are 1000s of volumes in this library and you can hardly breathe because they are so stunning. That’s the world my head lives in; that old ancient place with the first collectors that went off to far-flung places.

Study of endemic ferns
“Creating a painting, for example, take a pomegranate so it looks like you can pick it up and eat it. Illustrate the whole life story of a fruit; show the root, the fruit and the flower. That’s how I created the flora Bermuda’s Botanical Wonderland.” Christine presents the sketches for her current project, a study of 20 native and endemic ferns of Bermuda. “ It is a labour of love.” I’ve come to suspect everything she does is done with the same level of passion and enthusiasm. Her résumé is impressive: her work at Kew and with David Wingate on Nonsuch Island; she’s a fellow of Masterworks. Also a fellow of The Linnaean Society of London, Christine designed the labyrinth at Cambridge Beaches and won a National Trust Award with her husband, Tom Watlington for their Bermuda vernacular style home they created and built 33 years ago. Christine also taught art at the Bermuda High School for girls for the time that their daughter attended the school. She was one of the group to start the Bermuda Craft Market in Dockyard back in the late 1980s. She restored gardens at Sea View in Somerset with Iman and David Bowie and also created gardens on Agar Island with Dr. James Martin, the list goes on. “I came to realise that I had to get out and physically work on the land to create areas of beauty and plant endemics where invasive flora was talking over. When I first came here I didn’t know it was going to be like this because at the time the tourist publicity was very basic. It had a pink bus and a bike on the beach and The [Hamilton] Princess Hotel or something, but when I arrived I couldn’t believe the waterfalls of morning glory and the fact that paradise really existed. Before, I was in the bowels of the herbarium at Kew working with 30 botanists on the ongoing work recording the world’s flora – the most extensive ancient collections of illustrations and dried specimens from times of historical Captain Cook to present day. “The tropical world always fascinated me and when I travelled out to see the real thing it was quite remarkable. To me the tropics are where man survives best. Because of the edibles that are available in the wild and because of the climate and the sun to fit in more crop time. Sunshine just is such a wonderful thing. “I am now focusing more time into painting. I hope the tiny peep into the little habitats in The Bermuda Birthday Calendar show the beauty of Bermuda and will add to the huge awareness and passion Bermudians have in keeping and preserving wild flora and love of Nature.” The Calendar is meant to hang on your wall. “Open it each month, showing at a glance birthdays, anniversaries and other important dates to remember of friends and loved ones. You can be in time and organised with a greeting card or call to keep in touch at special times.”

tobacco bay Feel Well, Be Well, By the Seashore BY NADIA HALL
and cabana boys without the annual club membership.
With over 300 beaches on which to wiggle your toes in the sand, vacationers can feel spoiled for choice in Bermuda. While you can feel at ease knowing that should you cast your net in any direction, you’ll be sure to catch good times at the seaside, Tobacco Bay offers amenities that you will not find elsewhere. The best part is how well you are taken care of. It has all the comfort of lounge chairs
The picturesque bay, typical of its UNESCO World Heritage surroundings, has an interesting history as the setting for Bermuda’s “Gunpowder Plot”. On August 14, 1775, a group of Bermudians sympathetic to the cause of the American Continental Congress stole gunpowder from the British Magazine in St. George’s, rolled it across the island to Tobacco Bay and shipped it to America. Where once the craggy, vertiginous, limestone rocks that surround the bay provided ample cover for such conspiracy, they now cater to a crowd of pleasure seekers, adventurers and spellbinding sea life just waiting to be explored. This is a top snorkeling spot on the island, its shallow, waveless waters are safe for any level of enthusiast eager to view the colourful parrotfish or participate in any of the many watersports on offer. This once remote location, has recently become much more accessible with the introduction of the new bus shuttle. The St. George’s Beach bus connects to five beaches, perfect for those looking to cool off after sightseeing in the town. They provide live entertainment daily with clean facilities, a full bar and café with locally inspired cuisine alongside the popular burgers and fries, recently recruiting vegetarian chef Ashley Tucker to include a broader range of foods for the health conscious. Just like the new menu, there’s something for everyone in this beautiful melting pot. DJ’s on rotation spin island tunes in an atmosphere that is up-tempo enough for an impromptu salsa, but slow enough to play Frisbee. Sundays play host to Wet Republica, their signature and popular beach party, and Friday Happy Hour to kick off the weekend. While the beach can get quite crowded in the height of summer, the surrounding rocks provide a platform where you can step back and observe everything. Just soak it all in. They’ve recently built a private cabana by the trail for a more intimate group setting. FINDING TOBACCO BAY: Getting to Tobacco Bay from the heart of the old Towne in King’s Square is a scenic 10 minute walk, just past the Unfinished Church! Follow the plentiful beach wayfaring signage or for personalized direction, pop into the pink Visitor Industry Centre located in the square. Or explore so much more and enhance your day-at-the-beaches experience with the St George’s Hop on Hop off shuttle, running every 30mins past 5 fully serviced beaches!

explore Our Enchanting Island Paradise
JOHNNY BARNES Photo by www.moongateproductions.com
A Living legend, Johnny Barnes He’s the ultimate ‘morning person’ and a warm greeting from folk hero Johnny Barnes is the ideal way to start your sightseeing tour. Every weekday he’s at Crow Lane roundabout from 6am to 10am, showering city commuters with waves, blown kisses and a smile that could melt the heart of even the most jaded traveller. We begin our tour in the historic former capital, St. George’s. Wherever you go, don’t forget to greet all you meet: as Johnny reminds us each morning — it’s the Bermuda way!
Using our maps It’s easy to find your way around Bermuda. There are four main arteries: South Road runs along the south shore, North Shore Road hugs the north shore, Middle Road runs through the centre of the island and Harbour Road follows the inner harbour, across from Hamilton. Each road brings you into the city of Hamilton. Key attractions are numbered on our maps in this section and described in the text. In addition to the full key map of the island on pages 32 & 33 there is a large pullout map in the centre of this magazine; for a map of St. George’s, see page 19, the City of Hamilton on 24 and Dockyard on 34. ‘W’ at the end of a listing denotes ‘wheelchair accessible’.
Parishes In 1609 the survivors of the English wreck of the Sea Venture struggled onto Bermuda’s shores, well short of their intended destination of Jamestown, Virginia. By 1615 the Somers Island Company was developing Bermuda and exploiting her natural resources. The island was surveyed and what is now St. George’s Parish was set aside as public or company land. The remainder was divided into eight tribes or parishes, named after the principal shareholders in the Somers Island Company. These were, from east to west: Hamilton, Smith’s, Devonshire, Pembroke, Paget, Warwick, Southampton and Sandys. Along with St. George’s, they have become the nine parishes of Bermuda.

my view from behind bars Our Historic Homes TOWN OF ST. GEORGE / BY KRISTIN WHITE In July 1612, 50 families sailed into Bermuda with the goal of turning it into the most successful colony of the British Government. It had been 2 years since a group of shipwrecked passengers, who’d been stranded on our shores for one year, had departed the island on ships they’d built from salvaged materials and Bermuda cedar. When they reached Jamestown Virginia, the cahows (Bermuda birds) and pigs they’d stored helped save that struggling colony from starvation. Once word reached that the shipwrecked passengers were not only alive but had thrived on a beautiful island full of resources the decision was made to return. And the Town of St. George’s was established.
With four hundred and 2 years of life, it is impossible to walk the streets of St. George’s and not feel our town’s incredible history seeping up through the cobble stoned alleys and echoing through the chambers of the forts that dot our coasts. May is Heritage Month and a key aspect of our heritage is held in the stories of our people. And in St. George’s, imagining and ‘witnessing’ the tales is as easy as visiting the centuries-old homes. TUCKER HOUSE In August 1775, the gossip in this home of one of Bermuda’s wealthy families was that their own flesh and blood had betrayed the King and helped save the American Revolution by sneaking gunpowder onto a boat moored at Tobacco Bay and headed to Philadelphia. Visit the Tucker House Museum for the full story. And use your imagination to see a flustered Governor Bruere, father-in-law of Henry Tucker, slamming down a pewter mug and saying, “They’ll have your brothers’ heads for this treason!!” PILOT DARRELL SQUARE Look closely at the steps and see watermarks from tears of joy and pride shed when Pilot Jemmy Darrell moved into this home after his emancipation in 1797 and became the first Black Bermudian to purchase a home. I imagine neighbours peeking out, and I see the determination in Pilot Darrell’s eye when he walked up and placed his key in the door. Read more about this freed slave’s story at Pilot Darrell Square, a notable spot on the African Diaspora Heritage Trail. MITCHELL HOUSE Built in the 1730s by prosperous St. George’s merchant, Major Walter Mitchell, the home was owned by Isabella and William Archer in the 1800s, one of the most successful black couples in Bermuda who were said to have owned slaves. Imagine the whispering that went on in that kitchen and cellar! Visit Mitchell House, home of the St. George‚s Historical Society, to learn more. Visit these and other historical properties in St. George’s. Listen closely and you too will hear the stories. About Kristin and Shoshanna: I have lived in St. George’s since 2003 and developed an obsession with the town. I am the Development Director for The St. George’s Foundation and, along with my husband, own the bookstore, The Book Cellar, on Water Street. My bicycle and perpetual companion is named Shoshanna and loves the attention. #bermudabehindbars

inspired by bermuda Alexandra Mosher Studio Jewellery Bermudian artist Alexandra Mosher draws from the island’s natural beauty to create inspired, sculptural jewellery. “I create expressive and original pieces; they’re certainly conversation starters,” she explains. “There is nothing more fascinating than taking art as we know it and giving it a whole new context on the body. I make sculptures to be worn.” Considering Alexandra’s background as an artist, it is no wonder her intricately sculpted jewellery designs have been influenced by her studies in fine art. “I developed a love for craft at a very young age, and was often creating little presents for my parents out of assembled found objects,” she told us. “My family still has a collection of pretty little things I made them.” Alexandra studied Studio Art at the College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts and later, Jewellery Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. She launched her line of jewellery in 2005 and since that time has won several prestigious awards for her collections. Her process involves the ancient technique of lost wax casting; she first hand carves her designs in wax and then casts them in silver and gold in limited numbers. “I remember reading an art critic’s review of my work and feeling like I was on the right path when he said he was surprised at how I could create such original pieces at such an affordable price.” Although her work is highly coveted, she has something for every level of collector. Alexandra is perhaps best known for her Bermuda Reef Collection in which she

incorporates Bermuda’s famous pink sand into sterling silver and gold to create captivating pieces of wearable art. “‘Is it a gemstone?’ people ask me, and I just love watching their reaction when I explain how I’ve set our beautiful sand into each unique piece.” She told us that visitors often go on to say their daughter, sister or friend would never forgive them if they didn’t bring a little something from her pink sand collection back home as a gift. “It warms my heart to hear that,” she beams.
Finding a little piece of your own is a delightful experience. You can find the lovely pink Alexandra Mosher Studio Jewellery Boutique in the Washington Mall at #7 Reid Street in Hamilton or some of her collections at A.S. Cooper & Son’s stores islandwide. FRAGRANCE OF THE MONTH AQVA DIVINA BVLGARI FOR WOMEN Aqva Divina is the first feminine fragrance from the Bvlgari Aqva collection, which has so far included only masculine scents. Bvlgari Aqva Divina comes out in February 2015, inspired by Botticelli’s painting The Birth of Venus. The fragrance is announced as very bright and sensual. Its floral-aquatic composition signed by perfumer Alberto Morillas opens with aromas reminiscent of the salty sea; there are accords of bergamot, salt crystals and red ginger. Magnolia and quince form the heart of the perfume, which is followed by the base of beeswax, precious woods and amber. The fragrance is available as 25, 40 and 60 ml Eau de Toilette. buy bermuda Perfectly Pink BY REBECCA HANSON / DESIGNER OF TABS (The Authentic Bermuda Shorts)
What inspires me most about Bermuda are the colours. This month I have been mildly obsessed with the colour pink. It’s such a great summer shade and in Bermuda it’s everywhere! The houses, the flowers, the beaches, the sunsets and the fashions. There are many talented designers in Bermuda and I wanted to share some of my local favourites... in pink! From pale blush hues to super bright neon’s, the pink spectrum is huge. To keep from going too girly, choose pieces that are sophisticated, not too froufrou. Cut the sugar factor with accessories that don’t always play nice. I love the edgy angles of local jeweler Rebecca Little. Bermuda Born’s fun leather bags with pink neon detail feel like butter and are both sophisticated and edgy.

You can even smell pink! Lili Bermuda makes a gorgeous romantic floral bouquet composed of

Bermuda mimosa, sparkling Clementine, white and pink peonies, and a dash of pink grapefruit. Yum. Also, the Bermuda Candle Company’s hand poured, 100% organic candles will have you dreaming of Bermuda shorts and pink sand when you get home. Speaking of pink sand, visiting Alexandra Mosher’s boutique is a must. Her award winning pink sand pieces make a wonderful gift or island memento. Not just for the girls. Pink looks great on a man. Now I’m not saying go all pink panther on me... but a nice pink tie, shirt, or Bermuda shorts look sharp. Pink TABS paired with an Island Shop tie, and you’re ready for a drink at the ‘pink hotel’. If you’re still not sure what to wear your Bermuda pink with, stop by and chat to Van Swan from A.S. Cooper’s Man Store and he will put you straight. Have fun and experiment with a dash of pink this season with my favorite Bermuda brands that are on trend with this versatile summer hue. All of these are items are designed by locals and available on island. Thanks for reading! REBECCA@TABSBERMUDA.COM . WWW.TABSBERMUDA.COM

happy bermuda day Flying the flags for Bermuda and our guests…… BY CLAIRE JAMES
A delightful, colourful and warm Bermuda welcome awaits visitors to Queen Street landmark and downtown souvenir store, Flying Colours. Just a two-minute walk from the Hamilton Ferry Terminal, it is hard to miss with the twelve flags representing countries from across the globe proudly rippling in the breeze from the windows of the pastel yellow threestory building. The same patriotism, pageantry, celebration, heritage and pride will be on full display during this month’s annual Bermuda Day Heritage Parade. This deeply cultural event proudly showcases the beauty of Bermuda and celebrates harmony and civic pride. Dancing and winding their way through the streets of Hamilton the Gombey Troupes will signify the end of the festivities for another year. Every day at Flying Colours is a colourful celebration of Bermuda culture, fun and flair. For over three generations the Riihiluoma family has rolled out the pink carpet and welcomed visitors to experience their family friendly store and invite them to find a memento or gift to treasure as a memory of their unique Bermuda experience. Loved by locals and guests for over 75 years, Riihiluoma’s Flying Colours welcomes families to explore and have fun. Granddaughter and store buyer, Sarah Fields, enthused “I remember witnessing one of our young visitors lighting up and sneaking up on his family members after discovering a mechanical Sasquatch arm in the toy section. The family was in stitches. It is so wonderful to see a family bonding. “ Visiting Flying Colours is an authentic Bermuda experience, and a fun one! Boasting Bermuda’s widest selection of quality conversation starter T-shirts, gifts and souvenirs it certainly is an adventure, exploring and discovering the smallest knick-knack, special memento or hand crafted gift. With May 24th marking the first official day of summer for Bermudians it is time to picnic on the beach, join us for the first swim of the year in our stunning turquoise Atlantic Ocean waters, soak in the sun and take home your very own treasure. art matters Explore Art Everywhere: Start at the BNG By Lisa Howie, Director, Bermuda National Gallery
May is one of Bermuda’s most picturesque months with the flowers and trees in bloom; it is also one of our most culturally significant. As this magazine will show, the many various cultural events taking place can make May a busy month for the visitor interested in learning more about the Island’s diverse heritage and histories. I encourage readers to explore art everywhere; starting at the Bermuda National Gallery is (bias aside) a great place to start. Located conveniently beside the main bus terminal and a short walk from the ferry stop, the BNG is inside City Hall on the second floor. To find us, you may have already passed us on the way, as we have sculptures from the collection on display in Queen Elizabeth Park, which is tucked behind historic Perot Post Office. This space is a perfect retreat for a picnic lunch while discovering former principal dancer with Britain’s Royal Ballet, David Wall, depicted in mid-flight, in Jeté by Italian sculptor Enzo Plazzotta. Equally energized, Birds of Flight by Hungarian artist George Gach has transformed stainless steel to render weightless forms. Looking out to the future in a commanding way is Tehuana (Woman with a Cloak), a female figure in a traditional garment carrying a water urn, by Mexican artist Victor Hugo Castañeda. These works were given to the Bermuda National Gallery as part of a most significant gift of over 100 pieces of art by John Hinson Young II and his wife Nelga Vivian Young. Further selections of this gift are on display inside the museum in City Hall where we have selected highlights to show the globalism inherent to both the gift and the Island’s cultural diversity. Also on display from the permanent collection, The Ondaatje Wing is replete with impressionistic paintings mostly by well-known 20th century American artists like William Chadwick, Reynolds Beale, Prosper Senate; while the Watlington Room features representations of figures from historical 18th century portraits by Thomas Gainsborough and Sir Joshua Reynolds, to more contemporary portraits by Jacqueline Alma and Henry Ward. Join us for an art experience. Take away a memento with a BNG art book. For more information: www.bng.bm or call (441) 295-9428/ 297-9428.

the artist James Cooper By Nadia Hall
While not strictly a landscape, James Cooper’s subaqueous scene has all the serene elements of traditional landscape art with, on closer inspection, a very different message. While perhaps not as challenging to digest as some of his past works, it remains gorgeous to look at. Presented as a diptych, a split image of the seabed – still and hazy, with a single piece of blue Perspex layered across the two panels – occupies a generous section of the National Gallery wall. It acts as a sort of rudimentary filter, giving another way of seeing things. On first viewing it the Plexiglas was propped up by two cinder blocks that have since been removed, a paring down or adjustment typical of the artist. James Cooper He is always seeking to minimize wherever possible, a work in progress that, I suspect, leaks into all aspects of Cooper’s life. Attracted to the sculptural quality of the coral reefs, the piece is a natural progression from his previous works, all photographs, many of which included subjects wearing helmet ‘sculptures’ made by the artist himself comprised of various everyday objects tacked to the ubiquitous (Bermudian) biker’s helmet. Underwater photography is something of a trademark. His early portraits explored the sculptural effects made possible by underwater weightlessness using various props.

His surrealist undersea set-ups certainly got him noticed. He’s been invited to exhibit all over the Caribbean and North America after his works garnered much attention on the Internet. Challenging the notion that island art should

be “paintings of a hibiscus” his work is an antidote to what he describes as the “propaganda” of pretty beach vistas. It’s a powerful word – hyperbolic, no doubt – and one that gets your attention. The title of a former series, ‘Everyone Take the Same Pictures,’ was a similarly bold dig, not at the artists themselves, but the audience’s expectations. In a small society it’s easy for a single artist to seemingly influence the rest, which is something he seems keen to avoid. Bermuda does not share the same rich art history as the more southerly islands, something he feels in many ways has both saved us from an oppressive influence but also hindered, for lack of a supportive arts community. Times are different now. With the World Wide Web we are no longer quite so remote or isolated. But these limitations do have their advantages, he assures me. In the same way the framework of a group shows theme gives his work intention, the constraints of local printers forced him to create a split canvas, which he was ultimately rather pleased with. James’ proficiency, he insists, is not in his skill but in the strength of his ideas, a humble analysis that belies the clearly captivating qualities of his arresting images. “I like photography. I like the immediacy of it and what I can achieve on computers,” he explains. “Sometimes I work in a way where I’m producing a load at once and then I go through a stagnant period.” His work is in a constant state of evolution with an ever-moving end game in mind. And, like the cinder blocks that once supported ‘Warwick Reef,’ I wouldn’t be surprised to see him ditch the camera in the future, deeming it superfluous, removing yet another veil, further reducing to reveal something else entirely. Watch this space.

golf “Building Golf games and shaping people one person at a time no cookie cutter” BY KIM SWAN, J.P. TEACHING PROFESSIONAL
The importance of golf and golf courses is immeasurable socially and in today’s modern world has proven to be invaluable economically to many communities around the globe where they are located. Bermuda is no exception and at Port Royal Golf Course we are especially blessed, as our world class facility is a public golf course that services not only a local client base but also has an international appeal that helps to lure persons to our shores. We are most grateful for the vision that brought the PGA Grand Slam of Golf to our course - it certainly enhanced our stature as a world class golf course. At Port Royal - as a public golf course - local hotels, cruise ships, tour operators, travel agents, businesses and individuals can freely market this facility for golf and social events. It is not uncommon for Port Royal to host multiple events simultaneously - ie. baby showers and golf tournaments - without the two interfering with each other. Bella Vista Restaurant & Grill are to be commended for their part in making Port Royal a hospitable destination for a social event or just the spot to relax alone or in a small group. First and foremost, Port Royal has always been a golf course of international repute and the opportunity to introduce golf to persons through the Port Royal Golf Developmental Program is an honour. We see persons of all ages, backgrounds, shapes and sizes playing golf - the game of golf while a sport also has an important lifestyle component which is encouraging more persons to take up the game on a recreational level. Golf is an individual and personal experience and for true enjoyment one must learn how the golf swing applies to their own body structure, persona and learn to apply the fundamentals accordingly. As my late mentor Herman ‘Tucci’ Bascome always reminded me, “ we are all different and unique , we are not baking cookies.” To become an accomplished player requires many practice hours - like the flight time essential for a pilot - which is essential to learning to golf in a way the maximizes one potential. Personally, my experience as both a player and golf coach over the past five decades has put me in contact with some of the great players and coaches - these unique experiences are put to great use as I evaluate each individual golfer and outline a plan for them to develop a reliable golf swing. We encourage players desirous of improving their golf game or those wishing learn to golf for the first time, to come and participate with us at the Port Royal Golf Developmental Program.

Heritage Matters: A Bermuda Miscellanea in Watercolours BY DR. EDWARD CECIL HARRIS, MBE, JP, PHD, FSA
Behind the rocky foreshore of Commissioner’s Point rise the high ramparts of the “Keep”, the largest (9.5 acres) fort in Bermuda, while on the hill above is the Commissioner’s House, bounded by rows of cedar trees.
In the wonderful Fay and Geoffrey Elliott Collection of nineteenth-century paintings and photographs at the Bermuda Archives are a number of works for which the artist is presently unknown. Here we present four such miscellanea from different areas of Bermuda. The first image relates to the great Commissioner’s House, erected as the first cast-iron prefabricated home in the world, and now the centerpiece of the National Museum of Bermuda, with three floors and some 15,000 square feet of exhibit space. The House sits on the eastern hill of the old Royal Naval Dockyard, an area that was not quarried away to some six feet above mean high tide to provide the flat ground for the British naval base. The high ramparts shown below the Commissioner’s House were built to hold the Dockyard against an attack by the newly named “Americans”. Moving eastward, likely into the vicinity of “Tom Moore’s Jungle”, an unknown artist captured the opening to a limestone cavern recorded as “Tucker’s Cave”. The rock and geological formations in that area of Tom Moore’s Tavern are some of the oldest strata in Bermuda and in many instances the caves, with their stalactites, stalagmites and flowstones are some of the most beautiful sights on the Island. Further to the easternmost point of Bermuda lies one of the island’s most important fortifications, which guarded Artists were attracted to some of the natural wonders of Bermuda, one of the most evocative being the entrances to limestone caves, such as this one painted in 1871.

the Narrows Channel, being the only ships’ channel through the reefs into the inner harbours of Bermuda, such as Murray’s Anchorage, Grassy Bay, the Great Sound and that for the City of Hamilton. There were seven periods of fortification at Fort St Catherine and the painting from the Elliott Collection, presumably by an army officer, depicts the last remodeling of the site in the 1870s. At that time, artillery was undergoing a major change from that which fired round cannonballs to guns that launched ‘shells’ in projectile form, thereby giving a bigger bang for the caliber (diameter length) of the weapon. The watercolour shows the Fort much as it is today, as it was not rearmed in the early 1900s; it is now a part of Bermuda’s UNESCO-designated “World Heritage Site”. The last painting presented here is a wonderful vignette of St. George’s from the area known as Stoke’s Point on the southwestern perimeter of the harbour for the town. Probably painted in the 1860s, the glacis, or cleared field of fire, for Fort George to the west of the town is predominant. The Town looks very tranquil, as it is nestled into a part of the southern side of St. George’s Island, a view that to a degree remains the same today. This miscellanea represents some of the wonderful views of Bermuda that exist in the artwork in the Fay and Geoffrey Elliott Collection and other collections throughout the Island: as far as we are concerned, it is significant heritage reflecting the world that Bermuda once physically was, and which fortunately to a degree remains so today, major assets for cultural tourism. Painted from Stoke’s Point, Fort George dominates the little town of St. George’s, which is idyllically nestled into the southern side of St. George’s Island.

historical stories Do you know… About the Elbow Beach Resort, Bermuda’s first hotel on the spectacular South Shore? BY HORST AUGUSTINOVIC
When a wealthy gentleman in the Isle of Man promised each of his grandchildren £1,000 if they left for the other side of the Atlantic to set up their own successful businesses, little did he know that one of them would start what is now the Elbow Beach Resort. Having had success farming in Canada, Richard Berry Johnson was faced with a dilemma when his wife, for medical reasons, had to move to a warmer climate. Bermuda at that time was considered a retreat for the wealthy in need of rest, especially during the winter months. And so the Johnson family arrived in Bermuda around 1903, so that Eleanor could fully recuperate while her restless husband started to look for a new business venture. At the time Bermuda had two major hotels – the Hamilton Hotel in the heart of the city and the Princess Hotel just outside of town – as well as smaller hotels and guesthouses primarily in Hamilton. Nobody had considered building a hotel near a beach. Except for Richard Berry Johnson. When he saw the heavily wooded hills overlooking the pristine South Shore in Paget, he immediately felt that this was the ideal spot to build some guesthouses. After purchasing the property he christened it ‘Elba Beach’, possibly thinking of Napoleon’s lonely exile on the island of Elba. By 1908 R.B. Johnson built three guest cottages near the beach and began construction of what became the South Shore Hotel. The beachfront Pavilion and

bathhouses were next with everything completed by 1912 and the Royal Gazette concluding: “The many guests are loud in their praising of the ideal bathing beach and its charming surroundings, and of what promises to be the most popular place on the Island.” Having established a successful venture in Bermuda, the Johnson family would return to Canada during Bermuda’s off-season in the summer and look after their business interests there. Alan McNicol, manager of the Royal Prince Hotel in Hamilton, now became manager of the South Shore Hotel and with the declining tourist trade during World War I, R.B. Johnson decided to sell the hotel altogether.
Harold Hayes Frith, the new owner, changed the name of the property to Elbow Beach Hotel and embarked on an ambitious programme to expand the hotel. His timing was excellent as the U.S. Prohibition encouraged tourism to Bermuda, the Furness Withy shipping line expanded its services, and the traditional winter destination slowly changing to all-year tourism. Harold Frith’s first project was the addition of a north-west wing and shortly thereafter a new 200-room east wing to the hotel. With World War II tourism came to an abrupt halt and the Elbow Beach Hotel was fortunate that the U.S. Navy rented most of the hotel to the construction companies building the Navy Operating Base in the Great Sound. Later the hotel became a huge warehouse for the Wartime Supplies Commission where Government stored grain and the foodstuffs which were rationed. Following the war Harold Frith refurbished the hotel but unfortunately his health deteriorated and he was forced to sell the property in 1947. John Moores, the new owner, added a swimming pool, tennis courts, beachfront cabanas and restaurants and positioned the Elbow Beach Hotel for the coming era of mass tourism. It could now accommodate approximately 400 guests. By the 1970s this increased to around 600, just in time for the coming convention business and the annual College Weeks invasion for which the Elbow Beach Surf Club was Bermuda’s headquarters. After running the hotel for nearly four decades, the Moores family sold it to Saudi Arabian Prince Khaled Bin Sultan Bin Abdullaziz Al Saud in 1991. After refurbishing the main hotel, expansion plans included a123-suite extension on the west wing and a 20,000-square-foot banquet and convention centre. Additionally the adjoining Frithholme Gardens were purchased to build condominiums. The hotel now had 400 guest rooms and 34 acres . Comments netlink@link.bm

bermuda inspired cuisine South Shore’s Thyme BY NADIA HALL
This bright and airy poolside hideaway, with its clean lines modern décor, may not be what immediately comes to mind when you think “off the beaten path” but its South Shore location (just up the hill from neighbouring Elbow Beach) makes it a wonderful place to get away from the crowd. Established two years ago by well-known “foodie” Joe Gibbons, the menu has always celebrated our fresh, local produce with a fresh perspective on Bermudainspired cuisine. Now run by the sunny and ever-hospitable Devon Moss, Thyme remains the perfect spot for a casual and intimate dining experience or a relaxing drink or coffee. “You don’t want to change too much,” she explains, almost reassuringly, “you want to keep what works.” Chef Rene Amores Maypa has their daily specials on constant rotation with fresh fish featured alongside their popular house burger and pizzas. Originally from the Philippines, he moved to Bermuda 27 years ago and the experience has clearly made him an expert on what patrons want. Their wraps, salads and open-faced sandwiches are popular with people typically craving lighter fare in this climate. Each dish displays a vibrant palette of fresh fruit and herby salads that satisfy both sight and taste. They tempt the tastebuds and compliment the flavours all at once. The thin crust pizzas are perfect for sharing and the house burger has been described as a strong contender to the indomitable Dorothy’s burger, a longstanding Hamilton favourite with pattie lovers. Their list of unique toppings alone will have you returning over and over. Medium with a lobster on top, please? For those with a sweet tooth, desserts are made in house. Their Bread & Butter pudding and Crème Caramel have already earned a loyal following. Their house banner, nay, mantra ‘Wine, Dine, Relax’ is a near redundant invitation because you only notice it after you’ve done just that. The menus’ subtle

life’s a beach Bermuda Bistro at the Beach BY NADIA HALL
The Beach is a somewhat facetious name for an establishment that sits roadside. On the corner of highly trafficked Front Street and Parliament Street, it’s just as prime a perch for people watching as the actual beach and you don’t have to worry about getting sand in your shorts. Bermuda Bistro has gone through something of a transformation since it’s former life as simply ‘The Beach.’ Once synonymous with fried food and burgers, the menu has evolved to accommodate the changing tastes of its guests. A healthful and hearty breakfast menu, a brand new tapas menu for sharing, and a refurbished bar menu offering local and global flavours alongside the aforementioned fried food and burgers, are all part of the changing face of this popular day to night spot. Chef Johnny Simoes moved to Bermuda from Goa 22 years ago. After lengthy stints at longstanding establishments Tom Moore’s Tavern, The Royal Bermuda Yacht Club and Swizzle Inn, he’s experienced many facets of local cuisine and, as a result, has really come to understand what people here really want. “I know the client very well in Bermuda,” he says confidently, “the kind of food they want, their tastes.” Over the years he’s made many friends and developed a kind of loyal following. Often taking tips from his wife, also a chef at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences, his Goan background is a clear influence on the food he makes. He was the mastermind behind Swizzle’s famous Curry Night. The South Indian region’s historically Portuguese ties also weave effortlessly with Bermuda’s deep Azorean connection. (The Portuguese-Bermudians make up a significant percentage of the population.) A keen cricketer and footballer, he’s firmly established himself as a valuable member of the community. “Rick [Olson, owner and restaurateur] gave me a lot of freedom in the kitchen, unlike other managers. That’s what chefs need.” Chef Johnny has made a lot of changes in the four months he’s been in their kitchen. The chicken lollipops, a new addition, have his characteristic Indian Spices and a tandoori batter, while the trademark Bistro appetizer of wahoo nuggets have been updated with ginger pickle mayo. The Dark & Stormy ribs with his house-made rum and ginger barbeque sauce sweet and smoky and just fall off the bone. There’s a kick in the sauce, no doubt from the fresh ginger and a fruitiness from his not-sosecret ingredient, pineapple juice. The favourites still remain: the ever popular fish sandwich and gourmet burgers, and each day hosts Bermuda Bistro at the Beach . 103 Front Street . 441.292.0219 . www.thebeachbermuda.com
