On the Cover The Bermuda Perfumery: Celebrating 90 Years of Bermuda Legacy BY BRIGITTA WOHLMUTH

It is Heritage Month in Bermuda and we are delighted to feature The Bermuda Perfumery on our cover as they celebrate their 90th anniversary. This world-renowned Perfume House was first established in 1928, at a time when Easter lily cultivation was one of the island’s primary industries. Fields of fragrant white lilies once grew abundantly across the island. For the better part of a century, Bermuda was routinely referred to as “The Easter Isle” in the North American press, and later “The Garden Spot of the Atlantic” when the economic emphasis shifted from agriculture to tourism after World War One. Today, Lili Bermuda is recognized as one of the island’s most esteemed tradition bearers. They continue to handcraft all of their fragrances at the Perfumery in St. George’s, and this anniversary offers the opportunity to join them in celebrating the launch of their Limited Edition Legacy Collection. “These are the perfumes that we started with when the Perfumery first opened,” says the Master Perfumer, Isabelle RamsayBrackstone. The Legacy Collection consists of six classic Eau de Parfums inspired by local flowers; Easter Lily, Bermudiana, Jasmine, Oleandar, Frangipani, and Passion Flower. “We didn’t necessarily rework the formula as much as we infused a lot of quality into them,” Isabelle continues, explaining how they have carefully ‘polished’ these iconic fragrances over the years, without altering their original, vintage character. For the occasion, each bottle is elegantly nestled in a Bermuda Cedar Box and with each purchase Lili Bermuda offers a unique Venetian glass flower ornament, beautifully handcrafted by Oliver Zawistowski from Dockyard Glassworks. The Legacy Collection is exclusively sold at the Bermuda Perfumery in St. George and at Lili Bermuda Boutique in Hamilton. Style Guide Tailored to Paradise BY REBECCA SINGLETON OWNER OF TABS (THE AUTHENTIC BERMUDA SHORTS)

Welcome to Bermuda! Whether it’s your first time visiting of your fiftieth, if you haven’t already noticed, Bermuda has so much to offer. The one thing that I keep taking from this paradise? Inspiration. Especially for my brand, TABS (The Authentic Bermuda Shorts). For nearly five years, the stunning flora, fauna, and architecture that Bermuda has to offer has been an amazing muse. Our little island is lush and green all year around, but in the Spring, she really starts to show her colours. Here are some of the flowers that have inspired our Spring 2018 Collection Easter Lily White - Although Bermuda doesn’t have much space to offer for large agricultural crops, we grew, and exported Easter Lilies in large quantities from the mid 1800s until the end of the century. Our crisp white Easter Lily White shorts were named for this iconic flower and are a Spring favourite. Bermudiana Purple - The Bermudiana, which is a member of the Iris family, has become our national flower. This beautiful purple-blue flower decorates our lawns in the Spring and has provided the inspiration for our new polo aptly named ‘Bermudiana’. Oleander Pink - The Oleander was introduced to Bermuda in 1970 and blooms in a wide variety of colours. As you make your way around the island, you’ll be able to see a sample of these beautiful flowers, particularly the one that inspired our Oleander Pink Bermuda shorts. Stop by the Botanical Gardens in Paget to see these flowers and learn more about Bermuda’s beautiful flora and fauna and by TABS at 12 Reid street to see our island-inspired collection of clothing for men, women, and kids.

The sun-drenched Flagship features Alexandra’s best-loved designs as well as some limited edition and one-of-a-kind collectors’ pieces. From Sterling silver pendants and charms set with pink sand to rose gold and diamond shell-textured engagement rings, and countless delicate designs in between, Alexandra and her team hand craft designs that reflect natural elements found in the island’s clear blue waters and lush tropical gardens. Her online shop and retail store offers more than 300 handcrafted Sterling silver designs, plus a dazzling collection of fine diamond and coloured stone jewellery, all made onsite in her studio. Alexandra is known for her innovation, passion and lighthearted design whimsy. In fact, her collections have won numerous design awards. If the timing is right, you can ask for a glimpse inside the studio to see behind the scenes where the magic happens. “Much of my childhood was spent foraging for materials to make art, and at an early age, I inherited a deep love of natural elements and also of making things with my hands.” What started as a one-girl-show years ago has blossomed into a thriving design studio, specializing in providing travelers and Bermudians alike

with tiny beautiful gifts that make the heart flutter. “While much has changed, Bermuda is still the core of my design ethos, and I am so fortunate to have the opportunity to spend my days working with a phenomenal team that shares my vision of bringing more beauty into the world.” “And every day, I still feel the same as I did when I delivered my first commissioned design: that giving someone a unique piece of jewellery can become a lasting token that captures a fleeting memory. My goal is to inspire you to cultivate more beauty in your everyday life, and experience the magic of Bermuda through jewellery.” Finding a little piece of your own is a delightful experience. They say that April showers bring May flowers, and this is also true in Bermuda. Plants are at their happiest this time of the year, but this month you don’t need to step foot in a garden to enjoy them. Two years ago, a group of enthusiastic botanical artists formed the Bermuda Society of Botanical Artists (BSBA). Now this fledgling group will showcase Bermuda’s unique plant life as part of a groundbreaking digital exhibition, Botanical Art Worldwide, the brainchild of the American Society of Botanical Artists (ASBA). The international exhibition’s objective ‘connecting people with plants around the world’ is fitting description. The exhibition is a collaborative effort with Artists from 25 countries around the world exhibiting botanical artworks depicting native plants found in their country. The digital exhibition opens May 18th, Worldwide Botanical Art Day (see www.botanicalartworldwide.info/ ). Original artwork of Bermuda’s native and endemic plants will be on display from May 4th-29th and special events will be held at the BSOA Gallery on the 18th to celebrate this historic project. The Gallery is open to the public for free. Exhibiting members include Christine Watlington, Jennifer Davidson, Jackie Stevenson, Jane Maycock, Christine Doughty, Janet Percy, Susan Parker, Molly Luthi, Mary Flatres and Margaret Hammond. In the last 20 years the art form, once a form of vital documentation in pre-photographic eras, is having a renaissance believes, BSBA (Bermuda Society of Botanical Artists) member Jennifer Davidson, a Bermudian Botanical Artist and Landscape Architect. One key movement in this current zeitgeist was the opening of a dedicated botanical art gallery, the Shirley Sherwood Gallery, Kew Gardens in 2008. In 2010, an exhibition titled ‘Losing Paradise: Endangered Plants Around the World’ revealed that one in five plant species are endangered and highlighted Botanical Art’s shifting role from documentation to helping protect them. Jennifer believes this is one of the main reasons why the tradition of illustrating plants and ‘Botanical Art Top: Red Mangrove, Jennifer Davidson, Worldwide’ is relevant in the modern context, Bottom: Palmetto Palm, Mary Flatres particularly in Bermuda “by raising people’s awareness of the importance of biodiversity of our country,” she tells me, noting many of Bermuda’s native plants are also threatened. One of her beloved subjects, the Governor Laffan’s Fern, is classified as ‘Extinct in the Wild’ on the IUCN’s Red List of Threatened Species. “Department of Environmental Protection has been collaborating with the Henry Doorly

Zoo in Nebraska to reproduce plants with the goal of reintroducing a wild population back into Bermuda, over a century after it was last recorded in the wild. The story is fascinating and I wanted to tell it though my painting. I think it represents the spirit of the exhibition: linking people, scientists and artists together, providing a modern record of plants and illustrating Bermuda’s plants that haven’t previously been recorded.” While a huge variety of plants grow abundantly in Bermuda, the exhibition will only feature those that are endemic or native. “This genre is an art/science combination in which both elements must be present to qualify for the definition ‘botanical art’. It’s a marriage between accuracy and aesthetics”, says Margaret Best, as quoted on the BSBA’s website. A South African living in Canada, she was one of the first to join the society and travels here twice a year to teach a workshop on the art form at the Bermuda Society of Top Left: Governor Laffan’s Fern, Jennifer Davidson Top Right: Bay Grape, Christine Doughty Arts to both experienced artists and absolute Bottom Right: Bermuda Olivewood, Margaret Hammond beginners. “Art is evolving from its roots in scientific illustrations,” says Jennifer, remarking on the progress of this art form. Modern day botanical artists have more freedom to infuse their style and creativity into the works while maintaining scientific integrity of the their subject. The exhibition will see botanical art expressed across a number of mediums including coloured pencil, watercolours and graphite, demonstrating just how contemporary Botanical Art has blossomed. Cooper’s Island

Bermuda’s parks and nature reserves are scattered around the island like a green necklace, providing quiet, tranquil areas to explore, picnic and bird watch. Pack a lunch, take your binoculars and camera and enjoy what has been carefully preserved: Cooper’s Island Nature Reserve (pictured above) is located at the eastern end of Bermuda, in St. David’s. The nature reserve is 12 acres of unspoiled natural beauty, now part of Bermuda’s national parks. Until 1995, the area was restricted and occupied by the US Military and used by NASA to house a tracking station. On its east is Cooper’s Island Road with a stretch of quiet beaches and on its west beautiful Castle Harbour. Clearwater Beach and Turtle Beach are two of the public beaches located next to the reserve and there is a seasonal beach house with rentals. You can find nature trails through a vast stretch of woodland area with introduced botanicals like Brazil pepper, casuarinas and allspice, there are patches plus native Bermuda cedars, palmettos and olive woods which are being reintroduced to the reserve. Spittal Pond, located in Smith’s Parish, is the largest and the most premium nature reserve and national park on the island, spreading over 64-acres. It is also a large bird sanctuary and one of the best bird watching locations in Bermuda. Most of the bird-life can be seen from the trail itself and you can visit the is a historic landmark, Portuguese Rock, where shipwreck survivors left their mark in the 1500’s. Hog Bay Park. Hog Bay Park is a quiet stretch of rural land featuring agricultural fields, woodlands and an old lime kiln. You won’t see any habitation, roads or hear any noise as you meander along the networks of trails that go around the park. Bird watchers should bring their binoculars as the park is a mecca for resident and migrant birds. The trails lead to the coast line and offer panoramic views to the east and west. To reach Hog Bay Park take bus route 7 or 8. The entrance and car park is on Middle Road, Southampton. visit bermuda.com or download our app for more infomation

Historic Forts

Gates Fort

Bermuda Forts are easy to find and in picturesque areas - you don’t have to be a history buff to enjoy them. Most have been restored, some are in parks, but all have gorgeous views. Bermuda boasts impressive fortifications built through out the past five centuries. By the end of the Second World War over 70 sites had been fortified through out the island. Forts are the oldest stone buildings in Bermuda and represent every stage of the island’s development from a small, isolated outpost settled by the Virginia Company in the 1600s, to what became the “Gibraltar of West” in the 1800s and beyond. Many of the earliest and most impressive forts are located in the east end, within the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bermuda’s location in the North Atlantic gives it an important strategic position between the European and North American continents. The island’s most feared enemies were first Spain, then France, then the United States of America (1781 to early 19th century), then France again and Germany during World Wars I & II. Fortifying Bermuda against enemies was a deliberate British policy from the earliest days and was successful as Bermuda was never attacked. Bermuda forts were built in stone, when in the rest of British North America at the time, as well as Spanish territories and French possessions, forts were wooden. The island boasts the best example of British masonry coastal defense through the centuries outside of Britain. Lack of scrap industries in Bermuda, and being far away from world and regional wars, meant that while fortifications, carriages, guns and other materials got melted down elsewhere for re-cycled use during various wars, those in Bermuda stayed and became artefacts of exceptional military interest. Good examples are the rifle muzzle loaded guns still on their original carriages and platforms at various local forts. visit bermuda.com or download our app for more infomation

explore historic forts A FEW RECOMMENDATIONS: Scaur Hill Fort and Park This fort was built defend the Royal Naval Dockyard against the Americans during the war of 1812. Then in the 1940s, American guns defended the fort during WWII. While exploring, look for the deep gun pits and galleries which go deep into the hillside. The ramparts offer spectacular views of Ely’s Harbour and the Great Sound. To reach Fort Scaur take bus number 7 or 8. Both travel between Dockyard and Hamilton. Fort Hamilton Offers magnificent views over the City of Hamilton and its harbour. The upper levels and battlements have been landscaped with lawns, which make a fine place for a summer picnic. Entry is across a wooden bridge over the deep dry-moat and there are plenty of cannons and ramparts inside. Make your way down into the moat to visit the lovely gardens maintained by the Corporation of Hamilton. Gates Fort Gates Fort sits right on the edge of Town Cut, a channel created for ships to enter St. George Harbour. As you walk into Gates Fort, you will find two George III guns mounted and at the top of the fort, you will see the great advantage British soldiers had defending the entrance of the harbour. Gates Fort may be reached from the Town of St. George’s, at the end of Cut Road which goes along the coastline. Alexandra Battery The Battery sits next to Frobisher’s Building Bay, where the Deliverance was built in 1610 to take shipwreck survivors on to Virginia. It was completed in the 1860s and features a 9-Inch muzzle loader at the southern end. To reach the Battery, continue past Gates Fort along the coastline.

Treasures of the Sea Atlantic Jewellery Studio BY BRIGITTA WOHLMUTH

“The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.” Jacques Cousteau Inside of the Washington Mall is a store with ocean blue walls, whimsical marine décor in the windows, and unique handmade jewellery displayed from wall to wall. As you step inside, you get the feeling of being below deck on an elegant pirate ship filled with prized jewels of the Atlantic. And the treasures you will find there are endless. Bermuda Medallions, Historic Hog Penny replicas, a myriad of stackable rings, necklaces created with mystical gems and Bermuda’s iconic pink sand and sea glass… “We do a lot of nautical and ocean themed pieces, but I don’t like to limit myself either” says the shop owner, Jacquie Lohan. With over 20 years experience, you could say she is one of Bermuda’s more accomplished jewellers. She loves working with precious metals and gemstones, but she’s also a passionate surfer whose infatuation with the ocean reveals itself in Atlantic Jewellery Studio’s collections. Since establishing the business, she’s won numerous awards and even had her Jewellery featured on a Bermuda postage stamp. But she’s not one to hog the spotlight and has consistently celebrated the work of others. There’s ‘something for everyone’ in her showroom, where you’ll find not only her designs on display, but also designs made by fellow artist-friends and most importantly her apprentice, Jocelyn Powell. “Jocelyn has been with me for over 12 years. She is so talented and makes a lot of the pieces here,” Jacquie says. Jocelyn crafts many lovely designs out of Bermuda elements such as pink sand, cedar, and the store’s extensive collection of gemstones and pearls. She also collaborates with Jacquie to design one of the studio’s most popular creations - ‘The Bermuda Medallion’. The silver-sculpted pendants are truly unique pieces fit for any aspiring mermaid. They contain rare pieces of our coloured sea-glass, pink sand, replicas of tiny sea-shells cast in silver, and resemble the little tide-pools left on the rocks by the waves. “I think they really capture the essence of Bermuda” says Jocelyn. The medallions are wonderful keepsakes that let you cherish the Island forever.

The Bookmart Review Bermuda Five Centuries

BY MARTIN BUCKLEY, DEPARTMENT MANAGER AT THE BOOKMART AT BROWN & CO.

May is heritage month here in Bermuda and a time to celebrate the many faceted cultural diversity which makes these Islands such a wonderful place to visit or, if you’re very lucky, to call ‘home’. Those wishing to learn more about Bermuda’s unique Trans-Atlantic heritage will find that there are a huge range of locally published books available covering every aspect of its history and traditions. Bermuda Five Centuries, by Rosemary Jones. This beautifully written and lavishly illustrated book provides perhaps the definitive history of these Islands and their people. Author Rosemary Jones successfully employs her journalist’s eye for detail and tells our Island story using an entertaining mixture of informative narrative and illuminating anecdote. The book is divided into 5 chapters. These begin with ‘The Isle of Devils 1505 – 1684’, which covers the period from the Islands first sighting by Juan de Bermudez c.1505 through to the assumption of responsibility for the Islands governance by the British Crown. In the next chapter; ‘Sea, Salt & Slavery, 1684 – 1834’ we learn of how the lives of so many Bermudians were blighted by the horror of slavery, the joy with which emancipation was greeted and of how Bermudians of all races struck out across the Atlantic and Caribbean to trade in places such as the Turks & Caicos Islands and the Bahamas. The third chapter, entitled ‘Boomtown to Boers, 1834 to 1918’ tells of the arrival of the Portuguese and of the spectacular riches made here during the American Civil War. It describes the arrival of the first tourists and of the contribution made by Bermuda and Bermudians during the Great War. Chapter Four, ‘Votes, Visitors & Victory, 1918 – 1945’ covers the phenomenal growth of tourism, the beginnings of the civil rights movement and the momentous years of the Second World War. The final chapter, ‘Coming of Age, 1945 – 2005’ examines the struggle to achieve equality and the true democracy of ‘one man, one vote’. It tells of the peaceful change achieved through the famous theatre boycott and of the social unrest that gripped Bermuda in the 1970’s. ‘Bermuda Five Centuries’ is available now from The Bookmart at Brown & Co, $44.95. For more information on this or any of our large range of locally published titles, telephone 441-279-5443 or e-mail mbuckley@psl.bm. Souvenirs with Style

Shopping in the Town of St. George’s BY BRIGITTA WOHLMUTH

Pink sand beaches and pastel-colored houses aren’t Bermuda’s only aesthetic gems. The island boasts world-class shopping as well, and if you know where to go, you can find truly beautiful souvenirs that will never go out of style. This month we recommend a visit to St. George’s, a UNESCO World Heritage Town full of unique boutiques and stylish surprises: The Island Shop, Somers Wharf A vertible souk full of one-of-a-kind gifts and home decor, the Island Shop is an absolute delight to explore. Owned by local artist Barbara Finsness, most of the items you’ll find are designed by her, and her signature, whimsical style reflect Bermuda’s unique architecture, and all aspects of Island Life. A local icon, her stores are a go-to for house-warming gifts, housing a charming collection of block-printed tea towels, art prints, ceramic dishware and so much more. We love the stationery line (pictured left), which feature her beautiful designs on blank gift cards that are perfect for any occasion. Blue Buttery Gift Card by Barbara Finsness

Davidrose, 20 Water Street Owned and operated by husband and wife team David and Avrel Rose Zuill - these two jewellers share a passion for romance and beautiful, shiny things. Their boutique overlooks the blue of St. George’s harbour, and in addition to their famed Ocean Collection, they also have a Bermuda Collection full of iconic designs like this rose gold Bermuda Dollar Coin pendant (pictured right) and Men’s Sea Venture pendant made with black enamel and 14k gold. As one of Bermuda’s trendiest jewellery stores for bespoke pieces, consider requesting a custom design. They also specialise in wedding and engagement rings and carry a range of ethically sourced diamonds.

The Bermuda Perfumery, 5 Queen Street No visit to St. George’s is complete without a whiff of Lili Bermuda’s sweet smelling merchandise. The town is home to the historic Bermuda Perfumery itself, which lends a very different shopping experience than their Hamilton Boutique. A free tour of operations is held daily, and you can even chat with the Perfumer to learn how their fragrances are handcrafted on site. Their fine fragrances are available in a variety of forms including solid perfumes, candles, refillable travel atomisers, lotions, soaps and shower gels. We’re obsessed with their latest launch ‘Sunkiss’ - a sweet but creamy fragrance featuring orange, sandalwood and vanilla. The Bermuda.com App is a FREE Download

The East End

Our History and Heritage BY KRISTIN WHITE

St. George’s Historical Society, Mitchell House

In May, we celebrate Heritage Month! It’s a time for residents and visitors alike to celebrate and learn about Bermuda’s history and culture. And for those looking to discover the stories of Bermuda over the last 400 years, there’s no better place to start, than right at the beginning. I’m talking about St. George’s of course! Here in Bermuda’s first capital, our museums, historic homes, forts, even our streets tell the tales of the island’s legendary past. The World Heritage Centre should be your first stop. This museum and orientation centre explains why the Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and offers a 12-minute film called ‘A Stroll Through St. George’s.’ The interactive exhibits start with the shipwreck in 1609, talks about the settlement from 1612, and even explains what William Shakespeare and Pocahontas have in common! The building itself was built in 1860, and was a warehouse for the Confederacy during the American Civil War! (Open Mon-Sat, 10-am-4pm. FREE admission Wednesday and Saturday.) For more on the role St. George’s played during that war, visit the Bermuda National Trust Museum at the Globe Hotel. Their ‘Rogues and Runners’ exhibit paints a sharp picture of our town filled with blockade runners, confederate soldiers, and even a southern belle or two. (Fun fact: Mark Twain had lunch here… check his name in the guest book!) The Bermuda National Trust operates another historic

site in town, The Tucker House. Built in 1752, the main house showcases centuries-old furniture, china, and portraits. In the basement, you’ll find artefacts discovered from an archaeological dig. (Visit bnt.bm for opening hours of both the Tucker House and museum.) Just across town is another historic home, Mitchell House, built in 1731 and operated by the St. George’s Historical Society. Like Tucker House, you’ll walk through this home to get a glimpse of what life was like in the 18th century for the wealthy merchants who lived here. Depending on the day, you may catch a demonstration of their original kitchen, or, in the basement, a working replica of a Gutenberg printing press. (Open MonSat 10am-4pm.) No visit to St. George’s is complete without stopping into St. Peter’s Church. As the oldest Anglican Church outside the British Isles, it was given the title Their Majesties Chappel by Queen Elizabeth II. Sacred silver, a 400 year old bible, the baptism register, altar table – not to mention the Historic Churchyard with graves dating back to the 17th century. You could spend a day discovering the secrets of St. Peter’s Church. (Open MonSat, 10-4. Services on Sunday.)

St. Peter’s Church

Don’t miss the stories across the harbour. Three-hundred year old Carter House is now a museum preserving the one of a kind culture of the St. David’s Islanders and details their maritime history, including whaling, piloting, and boat building. (Open Tues-Thur & Sat, 10am-4pm. Open the first Sun of each month.)

Bermuda’s beauty is worldrenowed, but many don’t realize that alongside our pink sand and blue waves is an incredible history. Be sure to experience everything our island has to offer. ABOUT KRISTIN & SHOSHANNA: Kristin has lived in St. George’s since 2003 and developed a love affair with the town. Her store, Long Story Short is on Water Street, and from there, she offers amazing tours, bicycle rentals, custom hula hoops and a curated collection of gifts and books. Shoshanna is her bicycle, perpetual companion, and the 2018 Best of Bermuda award winner for best Bermuda character.

The West End

Five Hundred Years on Four Walls at The National Museum of Bermuda BY JANE DOWNING

The Hall of History, artist Graham Foster’s incredible mural in the pillared hall at the Commissioner’s House, is a must-see for every visitor! Set in a stunning two-storey hall, the sweep of Bermuda’s history comes to life in all its intricate detail, tied together by the blue of the sea. Foster included not just major events, but also the more obscure dayto-day happenings, customs and traditions which give Bermuda and its people their unique character. Over 3½ years, Foster spent more than 7,000 hours painting the mural, which consumed over 150 twelveounce tubes of blue paint alone. From the wreck of the Sea Venture to the descent of the bathysphere, from the fevered activities of the slavebased 18th century maritime economy to small details of boys playing marbles, the mural addresses both history and folklore, peppered with a dash of humour. Hidden gems abound: the girl walking a pet hog, the cat catching a rat, the stand featuring curried goat, the secret message spelled out in signal flags, and many, many more. Don’t miss it! National Museum of Bermuda | 1 The Keep, Royal Naval Dockyard. Open Weekdays: 9am - 5pm, Weekends & Holidays 9:30am - 5pm (last admission 4pm) info@nmb.bm / 441-234-1333 / www.nmb.bm

Do You Know...

About Bermuda’s National Flower and Ireland’s National Rate Postage Stamp? BY HORST AUGUSTINOVIC

Sisyrinchium bermudiana is a member of the Iris Family with a distinct purple flower with a bright yellow centre. It prefers moist soils which provide good drainage and is therefore often found on damp, sandy soils and rocky shorelines. Although short-lived, the flowers must regularly selfpollinate since it generally seeds very freely. In good growing conditions Sisyrinchium bermudiana can become abundant, spreading in an invasive weedy manner. Seed probably persists in the soil seed bank, however, the plant often possesses a short underground stem which provides food storage over the winter period. In 1916 the botanical magazine Addisonia described the Bermudiana flower as follows: “The stem is rather slender, ten to twenty inches high, smooth, flattened and winged, usually branched. … The leaves are linear, smooth, one sixth of an inch to nearly half an inch wide. In dry sunny places, very abundant in Bermuda, and the most characteristic herbaceous plant of those islands, where it is endemic, flowering in spring. … The oldest known specimen of this beautiful and interesting plant is one collected by J. Dickenson about 1699, preserved in the Sloan herbarium at the British Museum of Natural History. Sisyrinchium bermudiana was given its scientific name when botanists quite wrongly believed that the flower was confined to Bermuda. That changed in 1845 when identical flowers were discovered in western Ireland in sites around Lough Erne and Lough Melvin in Top Left: Wild bermudianas at Warwick Long Bay County Fermanagh. It is interesting that both Top Right: A hand-coloured engraving from the 1780 William Curtis Botanical Magazine.
