A few Christmases have gone by since I lived in Bermuda, but the thing I remember best was the toilet paper. .Back then, stores would shut over the Christmas holidays. The shops might stay closed for as long as three days. A sort of mania overcame people, the fear of wanting something they couldn’t buy. They overcompensated by buying gigantic quantities of anything they felt they might need one or two of over the holidays. In the week before Christmas, whenever you went to the grocery store, you’d see a parade of locals carting 48-roll packs of toilet paper on their shoulders, or pushing shopping carts full of water or God Knows What, as if it were the end of days. Things change. Nowadays, Bermuda probably has 24-hour toilet roll shops open every day of the year, and then some. Christmas is a time for reflection. You ask yourself: how am I going to eat all this turkey, but you manage it somehow. You ask yourself: how am I going to pay for all the food and drink and gifts, but you manage it somehow. After a while, you ask yourself: will it ever end? Christmas lasts for two months before it even begins. It’s the build-up to the action. Part of the time is spent anticipating the coming season by buying toilet paper, obviously, but also analysing what’s to come, by purchasing industrial quantities of Alka-Seltzer. In Bermuda, Christmas can take no more than a long weekend, but in England, the 12 days of Christmas, with Lords a-leaping and so forth, last three weeks – five if you count the two weeks of drunken parties that precede the start of the actual holiday. The country more or less shuts down for weeks starting on Christmas Eve. Families gather to watch TV repeats from the 1980s, eat way more food than is sensible, fight among themselves and drink themselves into a coma. The fighting usually happens on or about the third day, just as turkey soup and sandwiches start to form the daily menu. All that’s the fun part, of course. The part I don’t like comes in the week after that. The country’s still closed, but people have shopped for everything they wanted and a huge pile of stuff they didn’t want – it was on sale, or someone gave it to them, or they just looted it from the neighbours who were away seeing their families. It’s Zombie Time. People wander around the malls, as they have been doing for weeks. But now they have no money left and nowhere else to go. They drift around, their eyes wide open, their stomachs gurgling from the recent strain, their brains unable to comprehend that it will ever end. Eventually, they return to work in January, still wearing the zombie look, and normal service is resumed, only everyone has 47 rolls of toilet paper they don’t know what to do with. And that, my friends, is the magic of Christmas.

One of the reasons I love Lili Bermuda so much is because all of their products are not only natural, but environmentally friendly too - even the packaging. Candles and travel atomisers come in a gorgeous blue velvet pouch, and they have a green policy advocating customers to send in empty perfume bottles, rather than purchasing anew. They’ll refill your bottle and you’ll receive a $10 credit towards the next fragrance. “We try to make things that our customers will love, keep and reuse,” says Isabelle Ramsay-Brackstone, the master perfumer. A powdery pink box sits on her desk. The design is clean, a solid hue, only the Lili Bermuda crest is embroidered in silver on the lid. “We just got these in, they are for our Collector’s Gift Sets,” she says, proceeding to show me this new accessory to her sweet smelling merchandise. I’m impressed by how durable the box looks, it’s certainly something you wouldn’t throw out with the wrapping paper. The lid opens to show several different compartments, and ties closed with a pink satin ribbon. Of their many different gift options, this is the Crème de la Crème, the ‘gift that keeps on giving’, sure to delight any woman with a sense of smell. The Collector’s Gift Sets carry the whole scope of products per desired fragrance, “for the Unconditional Lili Bermuda lover” as it states on their website. There are quite a few of those too, I might add. The brand has international status, and yet it’s almost hard to believe that each fragrance is handcrafted and packaged within the historic Bermuda Perfumery itself. And for those who are, perhaps, less familiar with their products; the Discovery Gift Set is a wonderful way to introduce a loved one to this niche market of Bermudian fine-fragrances. inspired by Bermuda Alexandra Mosher Studio Jewellery Bermudian artist Alexandra Mosher draws from the island’s natural beauty to create inspired, sculptural jewellery. “I create expressive and original pieces; they’re certainly conversation starters,” she explains. “There is nothing more fascinating than taking art as we know it and giving it a whole new context on the body. I make sculptures to be worn.” Considering Alexandra’s background as an artist, it is no wonder her intricately sculpted jewellery designs have been influenced by her studies in fine art. “I developed a love for craft at a very young age, and was often creating little presents for my parents out of assembled found objects,” she told us. “My family still has a collection of pretty little things I made them.” Alexandra studied Studio Art at the College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts and later, Jewellery Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. She launched her line of jewellery in 2005 and since that time has won several prestigious awards for her collections. Her process involves the ancient technique of lost wax casting; she first hand carves her designs in wax and then casts them in silver and gold in limited numbers. “I remember reading an art critic’s review of my work and feeling like I was on the right path when he said he was surprised at how I could create such original pieces at such an affordable price.” Although her work is highly coveted, she has something for every level of collector. Alexandra is perhaps best known for her Bermuda Reef Collection in which she incorporates Bermuda’s famous pink sand into sterling silver and gold to create captivating pieces of wearable art.

When Della Valle first opened up last year, we knew that it was the beginning of something really awesome. There are plenty of great shoe stores in Bermuda, but this little boutique is the first of it’s kind, offering all-Italian leather footwear tailored just to the customer’s preference. “Where I come from, they have a lot of little stores like this one,” says Vincenzo, the shoemaker and owner. As a young boy, he was an apprentice to the legendary sandal maker Antonia Viva whose store ‘L’Arte del Sandalo Caprese’ is one of the oldest in Capri, often featured in high-profile fashion mags, the likes of Forbes and Elle Italia. With Vincenzo’s skillful hands and love of fashion, opening his store on Queen Street in June 2016 was the first step to actualizing his life-long dream. But it’s clear to us now that he was only just getting started. This month, we checked back in with Vincenzo and his wife to see how business has progressed and they have a number of exiting new additions, the news of which we are thrilled to relay during this season of gift-giving:

“The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.” Jacques Cousteau Inside of the Washington Mall is a store with ocean blue walls, whimsical marine décor in the windows, and unique handmade jewellery displayed from wall to wall. As you step inside, you get the feeling of being below deck on an elegant pirate ship filled with prized jewels of the Atlantic. And the treasures you will find there are endless. Bermuda Medallions, Historic Hog Penny replicas, a myriad of stackable rings, necklaces created with mystical gems and Bermuda’s iconic pink sand and sea glass… “We do a lot of nautical and ocean themed pieces, but I don’t like to limit myself either” says the shop owner, Jacquie Lohan. With over 20 years experience, you could say she is one of Bermuda’s more accomplished jewellers. She loves working with precious metals and gemstones, but she’s also a passionate surfer whose infatuation with the ocean reveals itself in Atlantic Jewellery Studio’s collections. Since establishing the business, she’s won numerous awards and even had her Jewellery featured on a Bermuda postage stamp. But she’s not one to hog the spotlight and has consistently celebrated the work of others. There’s ‘something for everyone’ in her showroom, where you’ll find not only her designs on display, but also designs made by fellow artist-friends and most importantly her apprentice, Jocelyn Powell. “Jocelyn has been with me for over 12 years. She is so talented and makes a lot of the pieces here,” Jacquie says. Jocelyn crafts many lovely designs out of Bermuda elements such as pink sand, cedar, and the store’s extensive collection of gemstones and pearls. She also collaborates with Jacquie to design one of the studio’s most popular creations ‘The Bermuda Medallion’. The silver-sculpted pendants are truly unique pieces fit for any aspiring mermaid. They contain rare pieces of our coloured sea-glass, pink sand, replicas of tiny sea-shells cast in silver, and resemble the little tide-pools left on the rocks by the waves. “I think they really capture the essence of Bermuda” says Jocelyn. The medallions are wonderful keepsakes that let you cherish the Island forever.

Travelling to Bermuda by ship from the East Coast means sailing diagonally across the choppy north-flowing Gulf Stream. In the relatively small ships of the late 1800s it resulted in many of Bermuda’s visitors being unhappy victims of seasickness. Mark Twain famously quipped ‘Bermuda is paradise but you have to go through hell to get there’.

going through hell to get to paradise To lessen the rigours of the sea journey in small ships like the Fah Kee, Bermuda in 1874 struck a deal with the Quebec Steamship Company to provide a bigger contract steamer – the Canima. For the next four decades the ships of the Quebec Steamship Company were a familiar sight in Hamilton Harbour. Especially during the winter months, travelling to Bermuda in the larger ships could still cause sea-sickness and this was not lost on Bermuda’s Yankee Store who published a rather humorous set of postcards to remind visitors of their trip ‘Going through Hell to get to Paradise’.

Originally from Austria, he has been living in Bermuda since 1961 and has published several books on Bermuda’s history, including the series ‘What You May Not Know About Bermuda’, and ‘The Golden Age of Bermuda’s Postcards’. The National Museum of Bermuda (NMB) has a whimsical interactive children’s exhibit, The Museum Playhouse that explores aspects of Bermuda’s maritime history in original and unexpected ways. Through play, toddlers to pre-teens can learn about topics such as historic communication on board ship, pilot gigs, gombeys, the building of the Royal Naval Dockyard, Bermuda’s agricultural heyday, and how to tie nautical knots in a giant sailor’s beard made of rope. The exhibit was designed by Bermudian designers and artists Russel DeMoura and James Cooper, working closely with the NMB Curatorial Team, and incorporates original work by other local artists.

This exhibit, located in a 19th century military building in the Museum’s lower grounds, compliments the award-winning Museum Playground, which offers children a much more colourful and exciting experience to the typical monkey bars and swings. A 21-foot wooden lighthouse with slide is encircled by a vibrant green moray eel where children can climb through its mouth and body. There is also a sand box in the shape of the Keep Fort, equipped with play cannon and ammunition. The Playground, which is exciting to play on and visually stunning, was designed by Danish firm Monstrum who believe playgrounds should be full of colour, fantasy and create a visual story that challenges kids motor skills. TOM MOORE’S TAVERN Walsingham Lane Tom Moore’s Tavern was built in 1652 as a private home for the Trott family. In those days it was known as Walsingham House, from the Walsingham area in which it stood. 3 ways To do Lobster Season in Bermuda BY BRIGITTA WOHLMUTH
Nothing quite says “winter in the tropics” like the Caribbean Spiny Lobster -aka Panulirus Argus- a species native to our waters that, due to strict fishing laws, is only available on restaurant menus from September until April. Try this local delicacy prepared three different ways:
Broiled
The most common way to eat a Bermuda Lobster is simply broiled, served with homemade stuffing in the center, blanched vegetables, a baked potato on the side, and, most importantly, LOTS of butter! Did you know? That Bermuda lobsters carry all of the meat in their tail? Our lobsters don’t have big claws like the ones found in New England, but they do have a whole lot of junk in the trunk... oh yeah... baby got back. Bermuda Bistro at the Beach, 103 Front St.

Another popular way to eat lobster in Bermuda is inspired by this classic French dish. Lobster meat is taken out of the shell and sauteed with mushrooms, onions, garlic and cream, then placed back in the shell, garnished with cheese, and baked until golden brown. Did you know? That summer time in Bermuda is lobster spawning season. Strict laws are in place so as not to disturb their procreation, and anyone caught in possesion of a lobster dead OR alive- between May and August can be charged a very hefty fine!

The Guinea Chick is a smaller variety of spiny lobsters, actually considered by many locals to be even more delicious. The meat is sweet and tender, and their petite size make them a perfect appetizer for your meal...Surf and Turf anyone? Did you know? Bigger isn’t always better. Conventional wisdom holds that the bigger or older the lobster, the tougher the meat, and it is a widely held belief that smaller lobsters and guinea chicks are often more tasty.
