Bermuda haha Eye of the Storm BY ROGER CROMBIE
The hurricanes that tore through the Caribbean last year reminded me of two occasions when big storms visited Bermuda and I happened to be on the Island. .The first was Felix in 1995. At the time, I was living in a garage on the North Shore. Housing in Bermuda is so scarce that a garage is considered mid-level luxury. .Before Felix arrived, the sun was lemon-coloured and the sky a supernatural shade of grey seen only on expensive wallpaper or people with serious hangovers. If I’d had any hatches, I’d have battened them down. .A policeman knocked at my door that evening, to enquire whether I might consider moving out of the path of the storm. Felix was apparently headed straight for my couch. “Where should I move to?” I asked. “Up the road a bit,” the copper said. “Mind if I don’t?” I asked, there not being much difference between being killed at home and being killed at the Clay House Inn, except that the Clay House Inn had booze. I stayed, and hunkered down. The storm arrived. It bashed, it dashed, it crashed and it smashed. And then it was over. My garage was intact, as was my car, which bravely lived outside in the wild, since I was occupying the garage. A strange calm pervaded the area. A small extension to the garage, my living quarters, had a flat roof, and on it I found half a tree. It would have to be removed. I wasn’t doing anything at the time except hunkering, so I found some heavy-duty gloves and got out the ladder. I was on the roof, trying to move the tree trunk, when the wind got up suddenly. The sickening truth dawned on me in an instant. Hurricanes have an ‘eye’ at their centre, in which no winds blow. A strange calm pervades the area and then the back end of the hurricane roars through, often containing the strongest winds. In summary format: the back end roared through; the ladder blew away; I jumped down and somehow failed to hurt myself (sorry, reader); I went back inside. I closed the door and recommenced hunkering. The winds blew and then they stopped. Close inspection revealed everything to be OK, garagewise. The second half of the storm had blown the tree trunk clear off the roof, bringing a rare symmetry to the chaos. That was a bonus, since it would have taken a dozen men to move the tree. I didn’t know a dozen men, and just assumed I’d have a tree on my roof forever. The second hurricane was Fabian, in 2003, which I would tell you all about, but there’d be no room left in the magazine for other articles, advertising, photos of the publisher’s granny, that sort of thing. Learn a lesson from my experience. When stuff starts flying around, forget about the fat lady singing. Never assume something is over until it’s actually over, because generally speaking, it isn’t, until it is.

lili Bermuda The Workshop BY BRIGITTA WOHLMUTH
“In perfumery there are no written rules, you can color outside of the lines, it’s whatever you want it to be!” insists Master Perfumer, Isabelle Ramsay-Brackstone. As an artist, she is all for inspiring others to express themselves in unique ways. Which is why they began offering Perfume Making Workshops a few years back, understanding that - while she and her loyal customer base may have a preference for fruity, marine, ‘island-inspired’ fragrances - not everyone has the same taste, and that’s okay with her. “My workshop people are a different catch, they aren’t afraid of making a statement with their scents” she says with a smile, eschewing that sometimes the teacher becomes the student in these instances. It’s equally inspiring for her to see what people come up with and the various approaches they take as it is for them, she confesses “A lot of people are not necessarily into my style of perfumery, but we can go anywhere, it’s very fun and interesting. Everyone has their own garden and their own preferences. Whether your French, African or South American, you’ll have these smells from your youth that mean very, very different things to you, so it brings in some really interesting combinations.” The afternoon starts with a basic nose training followed by a primal introduction to the chemistry involved in this science of scent making “It’s quite intense, you really have to be motivated” she continues, warning “it’s not like a pottery class or something.” Held every Wednesday at the Historic Bermuda Perfumery in Stewart Hall, St. George’s, the workshop is a full 4-hours-long and best suited for Perfume enthusiasts who posses the will to create something truly inspired. Isabelle proceeds to explain to me that “the perfumes you find on shelves have been perfected for months, some of them have had thousands of iterations to get the final.” Still, no matter your previous experience (or lack thereof) you are promised to come away with a fragrance you will cherish - and the guaratee “you’ll never smell anything the same way again!” Isabelle has taught a great number of people in her worshops; from bridal parties, to couples celebrating their anniversaries, to mothers with their daughters on a special Mother’s Day outing. Needless to say it’s an intimate experience, and rightly so she never takes on more than 5 participants at a time. “People need my full attention and I want to give it to them” she states loyally. This is the fourth year that Lili Bermuda has offered the workshop and they continue to grown in popularity as a fun and unique way to experience Bermuda in winter. The workshop is available by reservation only! For more information, visit or contact: The Bermuda Perfumery, Stewart Hall, 5 Queen Street, St. George’s, +1 (441) 293-0627

ten ways
To Feel the Love in Bermuda BY BRIGITTA WOHLMUTH
With pink shorts, pink sand and pink buses, one could argue that every month is Love Month in Bermuda. Here are ten ways to really feel it:
1
Try the local cuisine
Savour the flavours of Bermuda’s diverse culinary scene and you’ll surely be impressed! During January and February, many restaurants offer a prix fixe menu in support of Restaurant Weeks, an initiative organised by the Bermuda Tourism Authority so that everyone can dine around at a lower price than normal (visit gotoBermuda.com for a full list of participating restaurants.)
Lobster, Bermuda Bistro at the Beach
Smell the flowers
In Paget parish is the Botanical Gardens, a modern-day Garden of Eden, where you can see a variety of exquisite roses, hibiscus, frangipani and other exotic flora. You can also enjoy a free Folk Medicine workshop on Sundays with local herbalist Dr. Frith, for a walk-through of the history of herb and plant use in Bermuda (see the Calendar of Events on pg.23 for more info.)

ten ways to feel the love in Bermuda
3
Experience traditional romance
Bermuda is a popular choice for destination weddings but not only for its picturesque coast and landscape. There are a number of other charming features that attribute to feelings of old world romance. We recommend taking a Horse and Carriage ride through the old town of St. George’s. You can also find a Moongate to walk through, said to bring prosperity and goodluck to newlywed couples.
4
Discover retail treasures
Located Island-wide, but mostly in the city of Hamilton, there are a number of reputable jewellery stores where you can find a timeless keepsake to treasure. Antique gold doubloons, whimsical pinksand filled charms, and pendants embedded with sea glass and gemstones are just a few popular choices among locals and visitors alike (see the Shopping Guide on pg.28 for a list of retailers.)
5
Atlantic Jewellery Studio
Make some friends
Bermudians are known for their friendliness and there are a number of places to hangout where you can enjoy a drink, some good music and pleasant conversation. A good place to start is in the City of Hamilton where many pubs and restaurants host Happy Hour on a Friday night. We recommend Crown & Anchor in the Hamilton Princess Hotel, a great place for cocktails and they often host live entertainment.
6
Support the Arts
Feel the love for Bermuda expressed across a number of mediums by local and visiting artists alike. Mustsee galleries include the Bermuda National Gallery and the Bermuda Society of Arts - both located in the City Hall. Another aesthetic gem is the Arts Centre at Dockyard. They have regularly changing exhibits and a variety of unique works for purchase (see the Calendar of Events on pg.18 for more info.)

7
Attend a Tea Party Perhaps one of the most-loved colonial traditions in Bermuda is Afternoon High Tea which you can experience at a number of venues across the island. Local confectioner Sweet P hosts a popular Afternoon Tea every Wednesday within the fragrant gardens of the Bermuda Perfumery, where you can truly indulge your senses! (see the Calendar of Events on p.22 for more details.)
8
Take a tour Whether by land or sea, there are a wide range of tours you can book on islandtourcentre.com. If you have a full day to fill then we recommend the Hidden Gems All-Inclusive Eco-Tours, a frequent winner of TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence and a great way to explore the island off-the-beaten path, especially in Winter.
9
Explore the ocean Go beyond the beach to develop a deeper appreciation for the oceans that connect us all. In addition to the Aquarium (BAMZ) in Flatts, the National Museum of Bermuda in Dockyard boasts fascinating exhibits on Bermuda’s maritime history, while the Oceans Discovery Centre (aka the BUEI) is a great place to learn about the deep sea.
Private Shell Collection at the BUEI
Play a few rounds Welcome to golfer’s paradise! Bermuda boasts a number of awardwinning courses where you can Tee-Off like a pro. We recommend the world famous Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton- loved for its spectacular ocean views and 18 championship holes. There, visitors can enjoy a special rate every Monday (see the Calendar of Events on p.20 for more details.)

inspired by Bermuda Alexandra Mosher Studio Jewellery Bermudian artist Alexandra Mosher draws from the island’s natural beauty to create inspired, sculptural jewellery. “I create expressive and original pieces; they’re certainly conversation starters,” she explains. “There is nothing more fascinating than taking art as we know it and giving it a whole new context on the body. I make sculptures to be worn.” Considering Alexandra’s background as an artist, it is no wonder her intricately sculpted jewellery designs have been influenced by her studies in fine art. “I developed a love for craft at a very young age, and was often creating little presents for my parents out of assembled found objects,” she told us. “My family still has a collection of pretty little things I made them.” Alexandra studied Studio Art at the College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts and later, Jewellery Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. She launched her line of jewellery in 2005 and since that time has won several prestigious awards for her collections. Her process involves the ancient technique of lost wax casting; she first hand carves her designs in wax and then casts them in silver and gold in limited numbers. “I remember reading an art critic’s review of my work and feeling like I was on the right path when he said he was surprised at how I could create such original pieces at such an affordable price.” Although her work is highly coveted, she has something for every level of collector. Alexandra is perhaps best known for her Bermuda Reef Collection in which she incorporates Bermuda’s famous pink sand into sterling silver and gold to create captivating pieces of wearable art.

“‘Is it a gemstone?’ people ask me, and I just love watching their reaction when I explain how I’ve set our beautiful sand into each unique piece.” She told us that visitors often go on to say their daughter, sister or friend would never forgive them if they didn’t bring a little something from her pink sand collection back home as a gift. “It warms my heart to hear that,” she beams.
Finding a little piece of your own is a delightful experience. You can find the lovely pink Alexandra Mosher Studio Jewellery Boutique in the Washington Mall at #7 Reid Street in Hamilton, her new flagship store at 5 Front Street in Hamilton and some of her collections at A.S. The Battle of Foundations Lyndsey Scott-Furtado, Beauty Advisor & Aesthetician, A.S. Cooper & Sons, Ltd.
Finding the perfect foundation for your skin type and preferences can be overwhelming. With so many options out there and all of them promising to give you a flawless complexion, which one do you choose without having to throw the bottle out in a week because it’s the wrong shade, or you have cake face. Preparing your skin for makeup can make all the difference as well as your application technique. That’s what we are here for, to teach you how. Follow this quick guide to my favorite foundations to find the best fit for you.
Best for Long-Wear Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation is hands down the longest-wearing foundations I have come across, even on an oily skin. It is a staple in my kit when doing Brides for that very reason. This full coverage foundation gives an absolute flawless finish and with 38 shades to choose from it’s impossible not to find your perfect match. Try Double Wear Light for a more sheer-medium coverage with the same lasting power. *Great for Norm/Combination-Oily Skin types.
Best for Mature Skin
When looking for a foundation for Mature skin, dewy and fresh gives the most youthful looking appearance and nobody does dewy skin like Bobbi Brown. The Intensive Skin Supplement Foundation is infused with the skincare benefits of a serum while still delivering the medium coverage of a foundation. This multi-benefit Foundation gives a fresh, dewy finish, better yet, it has an SPF 40. *Great for norm/dry – Dry skin types.
Best for Sheer, Skin like Coverage
Whenever I ask a customer what they are looking for in a foundation, the first response I get is that they want it to look natural. I believe with the right techniques you can blend any foundation out to look natural and let’s face it, some of us need more coverage than a BB Cream. If you are looking for a natural foundation that you can see your skin through, Clinique’s Super Balanced Silk foundation is it. It gives sheer to buildable coverage and helps to balance the skins natural oils while hydrating the skin at the same time, making it perfect for all skin types. To find a foundation that is right for you, visit our Beauty experts in store for your free consultation and shade match. For more Beauty advice, book a one-on-one with Lyndsey Scott-Furtado by calling 441-295-3961. A.S. Cooper Main store located at 59 Front Street, Hamilton.

treasures of the sea Atlantic Jewellery Studio BY BRIGITTA WOHLMUTH
“The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.” Jacques Cousteau Inside of the Washington Mall is a store with ocean blue walls, whimsical marine décor in the windows, and unique handmade jewellery displayed from wall to wall. As you step inside, you get the feeling of being below deck on an elegant pirate ship filled with prized jewels of the Atlantic. And the treasures you will find there are endless. Bermuda Medallions, Historic Hog Penny replicas, a myriad of stackable rings, necklaces created with mystical gems and Bermuda’s iconic pink sand and sea glass… “We do a lot of nautical and ocean themed pieces, but I don’t like to limit myself either” says the shop owner, Jacquie Lohan. With over 20 years experience, you could say she is one of Bermuda’s more accomplished jewellers. She loves working with precious metals and gemstones, but she’s also a passionate surfer whose infatuation with the ocean reveals itself in Atlantic Jewellery Studio’s collections. Since establishing the business, she’s won numerous awards and even had her Jewellery featured on a Bermuda postage stamp. But she’s not one to hog the spotlight and has consistently celebrated the work of others. There’s ‘something for everyone’ in her showroom, where you’ll find not only her designs on display, but also designs made by fellow artist-friends and most importantly her apprentice, Jocelyn Powell. “Jocelyn has been with me for over 12 years. She is so talented and makes a lot of the pieces here,” Jacquie says. Jocelyn crafts many lovely designs out of Bermuda elements such as pink sand, cedar, and the store’s extensive collection of gemstones and pearls. She also collaborates with Jacquie to design one of the studio’s most popular creations ‘The Bermuda Medallion’. The silver-sculpted pendants are truly unique pieces fit for any aspiring mermaid. They contain rare pieces of our coloured sea-glass, pink sand, replicas of tiny sea-shells cast in silver, and resemble the little tide-pools left on the rocks by the waves. “I think they really capture the essence of Bermuda” says Jocelyn. The medallions are wonderful keepsakes that let you cherish the Island forever.

Bermuda in retrospect Then & Now BY HORST AUGUSTINOVIC
Before there were digital cameras and cell phones which now produce great colour photographs and send them world-wide in an instant, there were postcards, laboriously colourized from black-and-white photographs. Revisiting the scenes of these 100-or-so-year-old postcards can be quite challenging and we may experience a certain degree of nostalgia, but looking for that certain spot where a photographer lugged his tripod and camera all these years ago, makes us recognize and appreciate all the changes that have taken place since. Shown here are just a few examples of what Bermuda looked like in the early 1900s and what the island looks like today. Horst is a passionate philatelist, history buff, collector and author. Originally from Austria, he has been living in Bermuda since 1961 and has published several books on Bermuda’s history, including the series ‘What You May Not Know About Bermuda’, and ‘The Golden Age of Bermuda’s Postcards’. Bermuda & The West Indies national museum of Bermuda
Centuries of sea-borne history link Bermuda to the West Indies. While geographical isolation sets Bermuda apart, its people share with their Caribbean counterparts not only the bond of interwoven families but the mutual legacy of colonial development, trade, piracy, slavery, hurricanes and shipwrecks. On display at the National Museum of Bermuda is an exhibit that explores Bermuda’s ties with the archipelago that lies 800 miles south, celebrating the long-time cultural, political and family ties to the Caribbean. Despite the distance separating Bermuda and the West Indies, their fortunes have always been deeply linked. Since the first days of settlement in the 1600s, Bermudians have travelled to trade and live in the Caribbean.

Their expeditions took them to Providence Island (off Nicaragua), St. Lucia, Trinidad, the Bahamas, Barbados and the Turks Islands. Likewise, West Indian immigrants moved north to Bermuda: at first many artisans and labourers, and later in the 20th century some teachers, doctors, lawyers and police officers, thus enriching the Islands’ cultural fabric. The first major wave of migration took place in 1894 to escape the sugar industry depression and rebellions and riots in Haiti and Jamaica. The second wave occurred in the early 1900s to help build the Bermuda Royal Naval Dockyard extension. Bermuda never practiced the plantation slavery of the larger British islands, yet slavery existed for 200 years, and black Bermudians share the roots of that legacy. Many white families too can trace their heritage southward. Locals of both races still carry telltale surnames from St. Kitts, St. Lucia, Barbados, Dominica, Trinidad, Jamaica, the Turks & Caicos and other West Indian islands. Today, Bermuda and the West Indies compete for tourists and offshore business, yet they enjoy political, sporting, and cultural ties built on their shared heritage. date night Valentine’s Day in Bermuda BY BRIGITTA WOHLMUTH
So you’re in Bermuda this February, want to do something really romantic with your significant other but need a little help? We got you covered, hence our cover this month. I’m sure you noticed the handsome couple looking oh-so in love on their way to somewhere amazing. The dreamy setting only enhances the feeling between these two and, in case you were wondering where exactly they are, it’s Chancery Lane they’re walking down. Chancery Lane is probably one of the most romantic sideroads in the City of Hamilton and a great place to start your date night. The brick-paved alley takes you from Reid to Front Street and along the way there are a number of magical little surprises. The steps are decorated with painted poetry by artists of the Chewstick Foundation, and overhead a public art installation by local designer Tiago Garcia brings “a level of intimacy to an already quaint public setting” with over 450 lightbulbs illuminating the way. Now, where to go from here you ask? There are a couple of really nice restaurants on this street, both of them under the same ownership, but with totally different themes. Ruby Murray’s is the Island’s newest Indian restaurant and no ordinary curry house. Named after an Irish singer from the 1950s (it’s also cockney slang for curry ), their menu is devoted to the flavours of Southern India and they even have an Indian Tapas-Style menu. Or, if curry is not your thing, you could try Bistro J, an intimate, french-style restaurant with regular rotating black-board specials and an awesome wine list. After dinner you might want to catch a show at the Bermuda Festival of the Performing Arts. The Festival features a diverse selection of award-winning performing artists from around the globe with a sprinkling of local talents as well. From classical to contemporary music, the programme has something for everyone, so be sure to check it out (visit bermudafestival.org) and book your tickets in advance! Many shows will be held at the Earl Cameron Theatre within the City Hall, so you can easily walk there after your meal. For more suggestions on how to plan your night, check out the Bermuda Events Calendar on Bermuda.com or download the Bermuda.com mobile app!
