Bermuda . January 2018

Bermuda haha Forever Young at Heart BY ROGER CROMBIE

In Bermuda, no one is old. The sun shines and the aging process never happens. No longer living in Bermuda, I am now officially old. I don’t buy it, being forever 18 in my mind, but others treat me as if I were ancient. For example. I went into the bank the other day, to draw out some walkingaround money. The teller had obviously been instructed to be nice to customers. “And how are you planning to spend all that cash?” she asked, in the most condescending tone. I had no answer. In a bank, that’s suspicious behaviour, and the next thing you know, you’re doing 10 to 15 in solitary confinement. Banter was required, but I was too offended to summon anything. “Lunch, I suppose,” I said. “A $300 lunch?” the woman said, adding “Silly billy.” I muttered something and left. Next time, I’ll use the cash machine. On a bus a while back, a young woman offered me her seat. I should perhaps explain that I had suffered a serious injury the day before and was the whitest shade of pale. The injury wasn’t life-threatening, though. I’m a man: if I can walk, or even stagger about, I’m fine. I was incensed. The indignity! All my life, I have given up seats to everyone else. They didn’t have to be pregnant or anything. I thought about doing a spot of tap dancing, to demonstrate my continuing youthfulness. Then common sense took over, and I found the correct response: “No, but thank you.” You never know, there may come a time, say when I’m 120, when I’ll be grateful for such an offer. We do-gooders have to stick together. Plus, she was a woman, which trumps everything else in the “after you, no, after you” category under which I am filed. Being old isn’t all bad. You have the age card. Say you walk out of a zoo with an elephant tucked under your arm. If challenged, you go all goofy and ask “Is it time for my medication yet?” in a feeble, lost voice. If you do it right, they let you keep the elephant. Another good point about being old is that forgetting things is not a problem. If you run into your wife, and can’t remember her name, just say: “My memory is like a sieve. Curse this aging business!” If that doesn’t work, refer to her thereafter as “Wife” or “You”. Either way, she won’t let you keep the elephant. The whole thing’s ridiculous. I had to fill out a form this week, parts of which had been completed for me by the supplier. My age was stated there, bold as brass. I looked at it, and for a split second, thought: That can’t be right. But it was. I suppose I must be an old geezer now, a confused senior citizen with no purpose in life. How did this happen? Have I finished writing? And why is there an elephant in my back yard?

lili Bermuda The Workshop BY BRIGITTA WOHLMUTH

“In perfumery there are no written rules, you can color outside of the lines, it’s whatever you want it to be!” insists Master Perfumer, Isabelle Ramsay-Brackstone. As an artist, she is all for inspiring others to express themselves in unique ways. Which is why they began offering Perfume Making Workshops a few years back, understanding that - while she and her loyal customer base may have a preference for fruity, marine, ‘island-inspired’ fragrances - not everyone has the same taste, and that’s okay with her. “My workshop people are a different catch, they aren’t afraid of making a statement with their scents” she says with a smile, eschewing that sometimes the teacher becomes the student in these instances. It’s equally inspiring for her to see what people come up with and the various approaches they take as it is for them, she confesses “A lot of people are not necessarily into my style of perfumery, but we can go anywhere, it’s very fun and interesting. Everyone has their own garden and their own preferences. Whether your French, African or South American, you’ll have these smells from your youth that mean very, very different things to you, so it brings in some really interesting combinations.” The afternoon starts with a basic nose training followed by a primal introduction to the chemistry involved in this science of scent making “It’s quite intense, you really have to be motivated” she continues, warning “it’s not like a pottery class or something.” Held every Wednesday at the Historic Bermuda Perfumery in Stewart Hall, St. George’s, the workshop is a full 4-hours-long and best suited for Perfume enthusiasts who posses the will to create something truly inspired. Isabelle proceeds to explain to me that “the perfumes you find on shelves have been perfected for months, some of them have had thousands of iterations to get the final.” Still, no matter your previous experience (or lack thereof) you are promised to come away with a fragrance you will cherish - and the guaratee “you’ll never smell anything the same way again!”. Isabelle has taught a great number of people in her worshops; from bridal parties, to couples celebrating their anniversaries, to mothers with their daughters on a special Mother’s Day outing. Needless to say it’s an intimate experience, and rightly so Isabelle never takes on more than 5 participants at a time. “People need my full attention and I want to give it to them” she states loyally. This is the fourth year that Lili Bermuda has offered the workshop and they continue to grown in popularity as a fun and unique way to experience Bermuda in winter. The workshop is available by reservation only! For more information, visit or contact: The Bermuda Perfumery, Stewart Hall, 5 Queen Street, St. George’s, +1 (441) 293-0627

ten ways

To Experience the Island Off-Season BY BRIGITTA WOHLMUTH

Summer may be far off but Bermuda is a paradise all-year-round. Here are ten ways to experience her splendour both indoors and outside:

1

Discover the Rail Trail

Loved by walkers, joggers, cyclists and equestrians, the old Railway Trail has never been trendier then it is now. The scenic pathway stretches from one end of the island to the other, and exploring it is one of the ultimate experiences for outdoors enthusiasts. Be sure to bring your camera! A range of guided tours are available on islandtourcentre.com.

Explore the caves

If you thought Bermuda was beautiful above ground, you have no idea. Learn about the history and formation of Bermuda’s unique limestone rock caves with a guided tour of the famous Crystal and Fantasy Caves in Hamilton Parish. Or book an all-inclusive eco-excursion with Hidden Gems to explore lesser known caves found off-the-beatenpath that you can actually swim in!

2

ten ways to experience the Island off-season

3

Charter a boat

Experiencing Bermuda off-shore will give you a different perspective of the island and is a nice alternative to the beach in winter. So plan a fishing trip or a sunset cocktail cruise with friends! Early Bird Charters offer custom cruises all year round, and you can even book a special Vacation Photos at Sea Package to have your charter captured on camera by the Captain’s wife, a professional lifestyle and wedding photographer (see FianderFoto.com.)

4

Spend a day in the East End

This UNESCO World Heritage Site deserves a whole day’s worth of exploration. From historic sites to boutique shopping - this small town has a lot to offer! Be sure to visit iconic places like Tobacco Bay, The Bermuda Perfumery and The Unfinished Church. They also offer a number of exiting new tours, contact the Visitor Information Center on 441-297-0556 for full details.

5

Tour the museums

Delve deeper into Bermuda’s history at museums spread across the island. The National Museum of Bermuda in Dockyard is one of the largest and has won a number of awards in recent years with the addition of their new children’s exhibit and Playhouse. In the City of Hamilton, the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute is another fascinating museum with interactive exhibits for all ages.

6

Visit the art galleries

With so much natural beauty surrounding us, it’s no surprise that Bermuda has inspired many great artists both local and overseas. There are a number of interesting art galleries on the island (see A Gallery Guide on pg. 39) where you can soak up some culture and see the island from varied creative perspectives. Select galleries will also have works available for purchase.

7

Indulge in Restaurant Weeks Calling all foodies! This is the best time of year to experience all the culinary delights this island has to offer. During January and February many restaurants offer a prix fixe menu in support of Restaurant Weeks, an initiative organised by the Bermuda Tourism Authority (see gotoBermuda.com) so that all can indulge in the Island flavours without too much strain on their wallets.

8

Shop around Hamilton In the city there are many stores where you can purchase quality gifts and souvenirs. A.S.Coopers is great for browsing international brands at duty free prices, TABS is the goto place for purchasing authentic Bermuda Shorts, Della Valle Sandals offers custom leather footwear, and The Island Shop sells island-inspired home dĂŠcor. (See the Shopping Guide on pg.28 for more ideas!)

9

Catch a show For two months at the beginning of each year, the island becomes an international hub for cultural and artistic exchange at the annual Bermuda Festival of Performing Arts which starts this month. Be sure to check out the programme on bermudafestival.org. The festival will feature a diverse selection of award-winning performing artists from around the globe.

Join in the action One good thing about the weather this time of year is that engaging in sports is much more enjoyable. Every January athletes travel from around the world to participate in the annual Bermuda Marathon Weekend (see Calendar of Events on pg. 16 for full details) so if you’re not here to race then you can always join in the action as a spectator.

inspired by Bermuda Alexandra Mosher Studio Jewellery Bermudian artist Alexandra Mosher draws from the island’s natural beauty to create inspired, sculptural jewellery. “I create expressive and original pieces; they’re certainly conversation starters,” she explains. “There is nothing more fascinating than taking art as we know it and giving it a whole new context on the body. I make sculptures to be worn.” Considering Alexandra’s background as an artist, it is no wonder her intricately sculpted jewellery designs have been influenced by her studies in fine art. “I developed a love for craft at a very young age, and was often creating little presents for my parents out of assembled found objects,” she told us. “My family still has a collection of pretty little things I made them.” Alexandra studied Studio Art at the College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts and later, Jewellery Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. She launched her line of jewellery in 2005 and since that time has won several prestigious awards for her collections. Her process involves the ancient technique of lost wax casting; she first hand carves her designs in wax and then casts them in silver and gold in limited numbers. “I remember reading an art critic’s review of my work and feeling like I was on the right path when he said he was surprised at how I could create such original pieces at such an affordable price.” Although her work is highly coveted, she has something for every level of collector. Alexandra is perhaps best known for her Bermuda Reef Collection in which she incorporates Bermuda’s famous pink sand into sterling silver and gold to create captivating pieces of wearable art.

“‘Is it a gemstone?’ people ask me, and I just love watching their reaction when I explain how I’ve set our beautiful sand into each unique piece.” She told us that visitors often go on to say their daughter, sister or friend would never forgive them if they didn’t bring a little something from her pink sand collection back home as a gift. “It warms my heart to hear that,” she beams.

Finding a little piece of your own is a delightful experience. You can find the lovely pink Alexandra Mosher Studio Jewellery Boutique in the Washington Mall at #7 Reid Street in Hamilton, her new flagship store at 5 Front Street in Hamilton and some of her collections at A.S. stay beautiful

Out with the old, In with the new! Lyndsey Scott-Furtado, Beauty Advisor & Aesthetician, A.S. Cooper & Sons, Ltd.

One of life’s little pleasures for me is having a clear out of my makeup bag and skincare collection and refreshing with new products. Sometimes it can just be as simple as throwing my makeup bag in the washer, because let’s face it nobody I know has a makeup bag without foundation and eyeshadow stains on it. Or it can be a complete new Makeup haul. Whether you want to try a whole new makeup routine or maybe some of your products just need to be replenished, here are my recommendations to get the most out of your beauty clear-out.

The tools matter

If you have invested in a good set of brushes, and believe me it’s worth it, then all you need to do is clean them regularly and they will be your loyal best friend. A clean brush makes all the difference in the application and finish of your makeup. Shampoo your brushes every few weeks with Bobbi Brown’s Conditioning brush shampoo to keep your bristles clean and in tip top condition. In between washes use Estee Lauders Brush cleaning spray to remove excess product and Color and prevent bacteria. If cleaning your brushes just won’t cut it, try investing in some good quality brushes from an artistry brand such as Bobbi Brown. Her Basic Brush collection is a great place to start.

Don’t dabble with the eyes

It is so important to change your eye makeup regularly. Your mascara should be replenished every 3 months even if you haven’t finished the tube. After opening, mascara starts to dry out and clump but most importantly it can start to harbor bacteria and cause eye infections. There are so many mascaras to choose from depending if you want false lash volume or something simple and subtle for every day. One of my favorites is the Bobbi Brown Smokey Eye Mascara, it doesn’t clump and looks natural for daytime. The super black pigment makes it a great buildable formula for a sultry evening look.

Have a skin clear-out

January is the perfect time to start a new skincare regime and our highly qualified beauty professionals can certainly find something among our many brands to fit your lifestyle and skincare needs. If you are happy with your skincare but just need a little skincare pick me up, try Origins Clear Improvement Charcoal Mask. This gentle yet effective mask draws out impurities and clears pores, perfect for a new year detox. For more Beauty advice, book a one-on-one with Lyndsey Scott-Furtado by calling 441-295-3961. A.S. Cooper Main store located at 59 Front Street, Hamilton.

treasures of the sea Atlantic Jewellery Studio BY BRIGITTA WOHLMUTH

“The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.” Jacques Cousteau Inside of the Washington Mall is a store with ocean blue walls, whimsical marine décor in the windows, and unique handmade jewellery displayed from wall to wall. As you step inside, you get the feeling of being below deck on an elegant pirate ship filled with prized jewels of the Atlantic. And the treasures you will find there are endless. Bermuda Medallions, Historic Hog Penny replicas, a myriad of stackable rings, necklaces created with mystical gems and Bermuda’s iconic pink sand and sea glass… “We do a lot of nautical and ocean themed pieces, but I don’t like to limit myself either” says the shop owner, Jacquie Lohan. With over 20 years experience, you could say she is one of Bermuda’s more accomplished jewellers. She loves working with precious metals and gemstones, but she’s also a passionate surfer whose infatuation with the ocean reveals itself in Atlantic Jewellery Studio’s collections. Since establishing the business, she’s won numerous awards and even had her Jewellery featured on a Bermuda postage stamp. But she’s not one to hog the spotlight and has consistently celebrated the work of others. There’s ‘something for everyone’ in her showroom, where you’ll find not only her designs on display, but also designs made by fellow artist-friends and most importantly her apprentice, Jocelyn Powell. “Jocelyn has been with me for over 12 years. She is so talented and makes a lot of the pieces here,” Jacquie says. Jocelyn crafts many lovely designs out of Bermuda elements such as pink sand, cedar, and the store’s extensive collection of gemstones and pearls. She also collaborates with Jacquie to design one of the studio’s most popular creations ‘The Bermuda Medallion’. The silver-sculpted pendants are truly unique pieces fit for any aspiring mermaid. They contain rare pieces of our coloured sea-glass, pink sand, replicas of tiny sea-shells cast in silver, and resemble the little tide-pools left on the rocks by the waves. “I think they really capture the essence of Bermuda” says Jocelyn. The medallions are wonderful keepsakes that let you cherish the Island forever.

do you know... About getting around in Bermuda: From Horse-and-Carriages to Automobiles and Trucks? BY HORST AUGUSTINOVIC

The ‘Somerset Express’ on Front Street, ready to leave for the West End. Photo by Ronald Terceira

When automobiles became popular all over the world at the beginning of the 20th century, a small number were brought to Bermuda. But it was the ‘Scarlet Runner’, a motorized bus that was brought here in 1905 to take visitors to the South Shore, when livery stable owners began a campaign against motorizes vehicles, claiming that they frightened their horses. Bermuda’s Assembly reacted by passing the Motor Car Act of 1905, restricting motor vehicles to no more than 6 mph.

But livery stable operators were not alone in opposing motor vehicles. Wealthy Americans who came to Bermuda to get away from the ‘rapid transit’ of Boston or New York began demanding that motor vehicle be banished from Bermuda. Encouraged by Mark Twain, the future president of the U.S. Woodrow Wilson, drafted a petition, claiming that automobiles were an affront ‘to persons of taste and cultivation’. 111 tourists signed the petition and the Assembly passed the Motor Car Act of 1908, banning motor cars. It remained in force until 1946. While this did not resolve Bermuda’s transportation needs, the Assembly commissioned a study to see if a railway may be the solution, not just to move passengers and freight, but also to maintain the ban on automobiles. And so the building of the world’s

Apart from the Somerset and St. George’s Express, tourists could rent horseand-carriages. Shown here is Boston’s Mayor James M. Curley with his daughter Mary and her friend Jean Wurtz. James M. Curley was one of the most colorful and probably the most successful politician in Boston’s history and famous for having spent five months of his last term in federal prison following a conviction for mail fraud.

The first private cars appeared on Bermuda’s roads in 1946…

most expensive railway per mile was started in the late 1920s and completed in 1931. Meanwhile exemptions were made to the Motor Car Act with doctors allowed to import cars, as well as ambulances, fire engines and a garbage truck allowed on Bermuda’s roads. At the outbreak of World War II in 1939 there were 45 motor vehicles in Bermuda, a number that would increase dramatically …and were soon followed by taxis. to 8,490 by 1946. This included 375 private cars, 109 taxis, 380 trucks and 7,363 military vehicles. One year later most of the service vehicles had been withdrawn, but private cars now numbered 846, taxis 316 and trucks 449 for a total number of 3,176 on Bermuda’s roads, all thanks to the Motor Car Act of 1946, allowing private cars and taxis into Bermuda.

Only a few Government and Emergency vehicles were allowed in Bermuda before World War II. Shown here is a large Bermuda-built sailboat being taken along Front Street in July 1933 by a Public Works Department truck.

By 1946 everything had changed. Shown here is a Austin Standard convertible 8 horse-power car and a Dodge truck outside the Bank of Butterfield on Front Street.

P.S. One gentleman who just could not wait for automobiles to be permitted in Bermuda was John L. Carson. When he arrived in Bermuda in September 1936 to become Manager of the Bermuda News Bureau the only means of travelling to the island were the Furness Liners and the Canadian National ships from New York, Boston and Montreal. Less than one year later the flying boats of Pan American Airways and Imperial Airways could reach Bermuda in five hours. Perhaps Mr. Carson was hoping that on-island transportation would also change this rapidly, but that did not happen for another ten years. So instead of waiting for the law to change, the enterprising Mr. Carson decided to import a Velo pedal car from France! Here he is showing off Bermuda to Hollywood actress Loretta Young.

500 Years on Four Walls at National Museum of Bermuda BY JANE DOWNING

the hall of history 500 years on four walls

The Hall of History, artist Graham Foster’s incredible mural in the pillared hall at the Commissioner’s House, is a mustsee for every visitor! Set in a stunning two-storey hall, the sweep of Bermuda’s history comes to life in all its intricate detail, tied together by the blue of the sea. Foster included not just major events, but also the more obscure day-to-day happenings, customs and traditions which give Bermuda and its people their unique character. Over 3 ½ years, Foster spent more than 7,000 hours painting the mural, which consumed over 150 twelve-ounce tubes of blue paint alone. From the wreck of the Sea Venture to the descent of the bathysphere, from the fevered activities of the slave-based 18th century maritime economy to small details of boys playing marbles, the mural addresses both history and folklore, peppered with a dash of humour. Hidden gems abound: the girl walking a pet hog, the cat catching a rat, the stand featuring curried goat, the secret message spelled out in signal flags, and many, many more. Don’t miss it!
