Bermuda Ha Ha... Obsessions BY ROGER CROMBIE

Hobbies can all too easily turn into obsessions. Trust me, I know. A keen music fan, over the years I bought CDs whenever I had some spare cash. Plus, for about 20 years, I reviewed CDs for a Bermuda newspaper, and was allowed to keep the review copies. The infatuation with the little disks began with my very one. I came to feel that the crystal case and its contents were worth more to me than a $20 bill. Sexier, somehow, too. To be of any use, CDs must be accessible. As my collection grew, it required proper housing, so I shipped a load of build-it-yourself shelving to St. George’s from IKEA in Toronto at what ended up as an obscene expense. By the time I left Bermuda, the shelves were full (and useless, thanks to the humidity). Back in London, I had a carpenter make CD shelving for the spare bedroom. The work was finished just before I moved to a new apartment. When time permitted, I spent weeks alphabetising all 1,200 CDs and put them into two dozen cardboard boxes, which lived under the bed for about three years. Finally, last fall, I dragged the boxes out from under the bed and put them on the dining room table, where I began to place them individually in two giant wallets. Each held 512 CDs. The wallet sleeves for the CDs were not wide enough for the liner notes, the little booklets that come with them. I had to trim them all by hand. Took all winter. Whenever I needed to use the dining room table, the entire CD project had to be carted into my office. When it was over, I dragged everything back to the dining room table. That happened, oh, a dozen times over the winter. I was on the verge of hating my CDs, music in general, and my obsessive personality – traditionally three of my favourite things. The result of all this effort was two giant CD wallets that couldn’t be folded, let alone closed. Each weighed a ton. Essentially useless. On the plus side, I took 1,200 plastic CD boxes to the dump. They’d have felt at home there: my place in Bermuda was also a dump. The big wallets couldn’t hold all the CDs, so I had to buy an extra, smaller wallet that held 128. It was much more useful than the big wallets, so I bought eight more and transferred all the CDs into the smaller wallets. That alone took two weeks. One magical day, the whole ugly process was finished. My CDs were handily available, in alphabetical order, under a side table. The final madness was to have brass plates made indicating the contents of each wallet. Music now fills the apartment all the livelong day, and I’m a happy camper. I don’t know what my obsessive personality is going to demand next, but it will find something to focus on, no doubt. Sometimes being completely nuts has its pluses.

Cover Story

SunKiss by Lili Bermuda BY BRIGITTA WOHLMUTH

Synaesthesia is a condition experienced by many artists, whereby a sensation in one of the senses triggers sensations in another. The master Perfumer often has these types of multi-sensorial experiences when she smells something. “I see color, I hear music, I feel textures, I see tri-dimensional shapes,” Isabelle Ramsay-Brackstone tells me, during my visit to the iconic Bermuda Perfumery in Stewart Hall. Inspiration comes to her in a flood of emotion, and her goal as an artist is to convey these feelings through her fragrances. “Everything has to be harmonious,” she says, often comparing the craft to composing a piece of beautiful music. “Over the years, you really develop a style and a signature that your customers become used to, and that’s really been key for me,” she continues. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what make their fine fragrances so distinct, but there is a common note that a good nose can sniff out in many of them. Neroli is the blossom produced from the bitter orange tree. Its scent is sweet and honeyed with green and spicy facets. “That beautiful orange flower, for me, that’s really the true testament of quality, femininity and elegance,” she reflects as we begin to discuss the components of her latest fragrance. SunKiss is like a bottle of liquid sunshine, boasting bright and cheerful top notes of orange bigarade and Bermuda loquat. Isabelle’s beloved neroli flower is at the heart of this dynamic scent, complemented by the essence of vanilla with

Liquid Sunshine SunKiss by Lili Bermuda a base of sandalwood and musk. “It’s the pool party fragrance…sultry, summery, fun,” she sings, mirroring my excitement as I sniff my pulse points, entranced. I too begin to experience a touch of synaesthesia, the aroma inducing visions in my mind of a pool party with big floaters, palm trees and fruity-flavored lip gloss. The sweet and creamy undertones have me savoring the scent like a delicious bowl of orange gelato, and while I normally gravitate to less “girly” fragrances, this one is so yummy that I just can’t get enough. “The theme is vacation, Lili is going on a holiday! She is young and loves to have fun, to sunbathe and hangout with friends around Hamilton, Coral Beach SunKiss is available as an Eau Club and Elbow Beach,” she continues, giving me the de Parfum or Eau de Toilette back-story of the ‘type of girl’ that would wear this vivacious Eau-de-Toilette. The new fragrance launched at the start of the summer season and so far, the reaction from her customers has been as big as when she first released South Water, Coral and Pink- some of her most popular scents until now. “I really thought that mature women and people who are used to more complex fragrances would reject it, and I was totally ready for it, but its been a smashing success so far, so I’m really exited about that,” she adds, almost in disbelief. And while she admits that SunKiss isn’t a symphony, per say, it’s more of a pop-song, but a chart-topper for sure. “People really, really, love it!”

New 8ml Travel Atomiser

As do I. I already have a number of her fragrances on my wish list and this one will have to be added. So naturally, I’m thrilled when she shows me their brand new travel atomizers. The 8ml refillable spray bottles are stylish, very affordable, and fit neatly in the palm of my hand. They are perfect for carrying in your purse or clutch, and what’s more? “For the summer we are doing a promotion where, if you buy a large 100ml bottle of SunKiss, you get the travel atomizer for free!” she informs me, much to my delight. What will they think of next? Located in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of St. George’s, the ‘olde towne’ is said to be having a renaissance with burgeoning artisans on every corner, and many would agree that Lili Bermuda is leading the pack as a beacon of creative innovation. Not only are all of their fragrances created on-site, but they are constantly looking to the future with their green philosophy, eco-friendly packaging and evolution of products, proving that (although established since 1928) it’s certainly not your Grandmother’s Perfumery. This new fragrance is one of their most youthful scents to date, speaking to the fun-loving girl in all of us.

July Gift Guide GOMBEY GET-UP! BY REBECCA SINGLETON, TABS THE AUTHENTIC BERMUDA SHORTS

Welcome to the Isle of Devils where our Summer traditions are the highlight of the year. From Carnival to Cup Match, we have a little something for everyone to enjoy.

I am the designer behind TABS – The Authentic Bermuda Shorts and my summer collection draws inspiration from Bermuda’s Gombey dancers. Their stunning costumes are decorated with mirrors, tassels, and other small items; each one unique to its owner. The vibrant hues of hibiscus flower and the local chromis fish, are just two of our new colours of Bermuda shorts for 2017. I’m also excited about our Gombey swim short which is a digital image of the dancers printed on a quick dry swim short. Pair with one of our new polo shirts and you are island ready! We’re not the only ones who love the Gombeys. Sophia Fortuna has done a range of swimsuits available at A2Z Fashions and I love local artist April Branco’s pastel studies of Gomebys; she really captures their energy and colours. Local jeweller, Rebecca Little, has also expanded her line of jewellery for TABS to include the vibrant colours of the Gombeys. From tassel necklaces to pom pom earings this eclectic mix is sure to make you feel up beat! If you’re looking to take part in this Bermudian tradition, join in with the Gombey troupes at Harbour Nights. Get caught up in the infectious drumbeat and sharp blasts of the leader’s whistle then refuel with a glass of Bermuda’s own Rum Swizzle… just don’t forget to wear your Bermuda shorts.

Cup Match + Balance The most wonderful time (HOT) of the year. BY JENNA VIERA, HEALTH & WELLNESS COACH AT SIMPLY WELL

(“HOT” = Nope, nothing to do with the weather; it refers to being ‘Happily Intoxicated’ and you can either be half or full.) Family, friends, festivities at the Cricket game, boating & all day raft ups, beaching, pool BBQ’s, soca music, an abundance of Rum Swizzles, Dark & Stormies and lots of food. The Atmosphere - insanely amazing for locals and visitors! So, let’s face it – we’re all going to get in on (too much) Cupmatch fun. The extra long weekend kicks off on August 3rd this year. In addition to staying super hydrated, here’s a few of my favorite ways to keep the cheeky sippin’ and good eatin’ in #balance, and recovery mode, during and after the Cupmatch debauchery:

1

Greens, Greens, Everywhere Leafy greens boost immunity and help your body, the liver especially, to detox and restore. (Uh… needed!) They’re also seriously hunger curbing. Include them at most of your Cupmatch meals and your body will thank you during the ‘toddy’ up, and be more likely to forgive you after.

2

Get ‘Boochin Raw, organic Kombucha, a fizzy, tea which contains probiotics, B vitamins, and other detoxifying nutrients. It supports and replenishes your good gut bacteria and liver, needed before, and especially after, those celebratory Cupmatch nights. My go-to on the daily is GT’s Kombucha (find at Lindo’s or Mile’s Market). Choose four grams of sugar or less per serving. HOT TIP – use Kombucha as a mixer with any alcohol of choice. It replaces the high sugar, additive filled mixers which also contribute to that not so nice morning after. All the ‘good, good’ while I toddy, yes please!

3

Good ole’ Zzzz’s Tried and true! Late nights are a Cupmatch given. The body restores while you sleep, so get as many hours as you can. Especially the week post-holiday. Snoring, so allowed.

Smoothie Soothie Refreshing and nourishing - Go non-dairy mylk

4

or even just water, throw some leafy greens in, add a frozen banana, almond butter, berries, superfoods like cacao, maca which are antioxidant powerhouses, promote wellbeing, known to boost mood, help to balance hormones (needed after drinking!) and aid your body in adapting its internal response to external stressors - toxins, lack of sleep, heat or not wanting to go back to work after the holiday … Tis the summer season, so have fun! You can totally have great time, with a few of your favorite libations, delicious food and still be mindful to take care of yourself at the same time. Thirty Two 64 Look Good - Feel Great

BY SAM OUTERBRIDGE, CO FOUNDER, THIRTY TWO 64 AND CORAL COAST CLOTHING

Coral Coast Clothing was established in 2014 and has finally taken the leap into ground floor retail, on Front Street! The name of the store ‘Thirty Two 64” is derived from the geographical coordinates of Bermuda and is located in the Heart of Hamilton (Across from the Ferry Terminal) - 15 Front St. ‘Somers Building’ The store is a classy, nautical-themed menswear boutique and is quickly becoming the premier place to shop for the modern lad! Alongside Coral Coast, we will be rolling out smaller boutique brands to accompany our own. Coral Coast currently sells Dress Shirts (Formal & Un-Tucked Style), Polo’s, Performance Swim Trunks, Hats and Ties. The store will also carry colourful socks, belts, sunglasses, flip-flops and the infamous short sleeve button-downs. Growing up in Bermuda we were isolated (lost in the triangle) and only had a few menswear brands to choose from. Every time we left the island we were blownaway with the selection of smaller-brands that had exceptional quality. The idea of bringing choice to men’s fashion in Bermuda was the premise for opening our fresh new retail location (Thirty Two 64). Educating the local and foreign consumer on quality and selection is very important to us. At Thirty Two 64 we really take pride in knowing each and every one of our customers. We believe that having exceptional customer service is the key to the retail experience. We offer fitting and styling to every person that walks through the doors! Every man is unique and really does deserve his own style, with a twist! Our motto is “Look Good – Feel Great” Come by to check out the latest threads or just hangout. Thanks for all the support, Sam & Adam

The House on the Hill National Museum of Bermuda BY JANE DOWNING, REGISTRAR, NATIONAL MUSEUM OF BERMUDA

Top Left: Commissoner’s House Today Top Bottom: Royal Marines in residence c 1885 Right: The Hall of History Mural

The beautifully restored Commissioner’s House, with its wrap-around verandahs, dominates the skyline at Dockyard and commands sweeping views of the sea. Constructed of Bermuda stone, with an unusual prefabricated cast iron frame, the House was built between 1823 and 1827 by convicts, slaves and local labour. Designed around a central lightwell to maximise cooling air circulation, the enormous structure served as the residence of the Commissioner of the Dockyard and his family for only 10 years before conversion to a barracks for the Royal Marines. During the 20th century the House was taken over by the Royal Navy as a “stone frigate” or shore establishment, and formally commissioned as a ship— HMS Malabar. From 1939 to 1945 it was the Allied headquarters for North Atlantic submarine radio interception. After the war it fell into disrepair, to be rescued by the Museum in an award-winning restoration and re-opened to the public in 2000. Today, in addition to taking in the grand architecture and glorious views, you can browse exhibits on the diverse origins and experiences of Bermuda’s people and the rise of the tourism economy. The ground floor chronicles the history of Bermuda’s 90-odd fortifications over three centuries, from settlement in 1612 to the demise of coastal defence in 1957, and celebrates the men and women of Bermuda who served locally and abroad, including 115 who gave their lives in the two World Wars. The piece de resistance is a stunning floor-to-ceiling mural in the rear stairwell. Tracing the 500-year human history of Bermuda, local artist Graham Foster’s grand mural has captured the imagination of all ages, telling the island’s story with vibrant detail, irreverent humour and poignant observations. Other displays include Bermuda coins and currency, maritime art, ship models, Bermuda Race memorabilies and a dollhouse furnished with miniature replicas of Bermuda antiques.

Reflecting on 5 Years TeachingCoaching Golf at Port Royal BY KIM SWAN, J.P. TEACHING PROFESSIONAL

Teaching/Coaching is an exciting trade where a passionate coach has the opportunity to learn from every teaching experience. For me, the past five years teaching golf at Port Royal has been an unexpected blessing which has helped my knowledge of the game of golf grow. I remember fondly the advice given to me by master PGA Professional John Wilkinson from Europe, that allowed me to find myself in the mist of a personal storm 2012. John Wilkinson’s advice was to pick myself up, go out hit balls all day - toil until you are tired - surprisingly during that marathon session my thoughts centered around my life in golf. At the end, it became self evident that I had a great deal to share about this great game of golf through my life’s experiences. It certainly has helped to ply my golf trade at Port Royal, a world class public golf course, that attracts serious golfers from around the world. Five years later, I can see my clients golf swings through my minds eye - albeit ably assisted by the apps and slo motion features on my iPhone. When it comes to improving ones golf game, there remains no substitute for practice and focusing on applying proper fundamentals of aim, grip, posture, rhythm and balance as you learn to improve your swinging technique. We encourage the golfing public to play Port Royal Golf Course on a regular basis, it is a rare opportunity to have access to such a high quality championship golf course. Playing a challenging golf course on a regular basis invariably helps to test your golf skills - you improve as you learn to adapt. We invite you to plan your next game at Port Royal Golf Course and after your game enjoy a delicious meal at Bella Vista Grill.

Youth Camera Action at Bermuda National Gallery: a focus on art, fun, and personal growth BY LISA HOWIE, DIRECTOR, BERMUDA NATIONAL GALLERY

Every summer since 2009 Bermuda National Gallery (BNG) has offered a summer photography programme for students aged 11-14. The programme is called Youth Camera Action and it was born out of a shared vision between BNG and the Family Centre. The organizations partnered to empower middle school children in Bermuda to express their creativity, vision and voice through photography. Youth Camera Action (YCA) took inspiration from the transformative experience documented in the film Born into Brothels (2004). This film follows impoverished children denied access to education in Calcutta, India. Once given cameras and the skills to use them, these children blossomed as learners, developed a new sense of autonomy, and inspired the filmmakers to advocate on their behalf for access to education. Bermuda National Gallery and the Family Centre agreed that a programme dedicated to using the camera as a tool for self-expression and personal growth was as relevant and necessary in Bermuda as in India. What we have observed since the inception of the programme are similar outcomes of transformation. “During this week of YCA camp, I learned a lot about cameras. My favourite setting was colour accent during Fashion Photography because I enjoyed directing people and taking pictures of them. It made me feel like a real photographer. Overall I really liked this camp! Because of high interest, the YCA programme has expanded and now offers introductory and intermediate levels, which include stop-motion photography, creative writing, and art-making. Further, YCA embraces students who demonstrate leadership skills and now offers training for junior counsellor positions. In many instances, YCA students also become BNG Youth Council Members, who create relevant and engaging art related activities for their peers. At the introductory level, students learn the basic principles of composition and photography, and how to use the various functions of a digital camera, including the manual mode. Participants learn creative strategies, travel to various locations

Intermediate students have three ‘themed weeks’ to choose from. Botanicals & Wildlife explores the natural world. The Phenomena of the Selfie includes the study of portraiture, fashion, and commercial photography. Social-Political Activism focuses on photojournalism and students create a ‘call to action’ portfolio on a social issue of their choice. Bermuda Books Cup Match in Bermuda by Lawrence Trott REVIEW BY MARTIN BUCKLEY, DEPARTMENT MANAGER, THE BOOKMART AT BROWN & CO.

da

CUP MATCH in Bermu da

CH CUP MinAT Bermuda

Is it an exaggeration to say that the Cup Match is the most important holiday in the Bermudian calendar? Possibly, but not much of one. Cup Match embodies everything that is best about the peoples of these Islands: hospitality, good humour, sportsmanship, friendly rivalry and the ability to throw a party to which everyone is welcome.

Lawrence Trott

The Cup Match holiday owes its origins to the heart felt celebrations which followed the passing of the Emancipation Act on August 1st 1834. This act, which finally abolished the horror of slavery throughout Lawrence Trott the British Empire, was greeted with joy by those whom it freed. The anniversary of Emancipation soon became an important annual celebration for communities of former slaves across Britain’s colonies. A time for thanks giving services, picnics and of course an opportunity to play that most complicated of British sports; cricket. Yes, cricket, lovely cricket. To misquote the song, ‘Bermudians don’t like cricket, oh no, they love it’ and their obsession with the game culminates every year in the annual match played between St George’s and Somerset. Loyalties are proclaimed through the wearing of club colours (blue and light blue for St George’s, blue and red for Somerset) and by a sad shaking of heads when it becomes apparent that an otherwise perfectly sane acquaintance inexplicably supports the ‘wrong’ team. This brief display of pity is usually followed by ribald condemnation of their choice and prophesies of forthcoming defeat. For generations (and formally since 1902) cricket has been at the heart of Bermuda’s Emancipation celebrations. Bermudian photographer and journalist Lawrence Trott has captured the very essence of Bermuda’s annual emancipation celebration in his wonderful new book ‘Cup Match in Bermuda’. Its pages are lavishly illustrated with action photos of the cricket stars of today and yesterday and with images of Bermudians enjoying the big holiday of the year. All the ingredients are here; the game played out under a blue sky, ‘Jim’ Woolridge’s commentary, the sea of club colours dominating the spectator stands, picnics, fortunes won and lost at the Crown & Anchor tables, swizzle being enjoyed, wickets falling, sixes being struck, heroes being made, fun being had. Also included are tables of notable player performances, a forward by Wendell Smith, a history of Cup Match by Ira Philip MBE and John Watkins famous explanation of cricket for ‘foreigners’; ‘You have two sides, one out in the field and one in …’ The Book Mart at Brown and Co, 35 Front St, Hamilton | 441-279-5442

Bermuda Books Cup Match in Bermuda

All eyes are glued to the action at Somerset in 1996 as the home team, chasing 252 for victory, still need 20 runs with three overs remaining latet on the second day. Albert Steede is the batsman on 99.

Lionel Cann took three catches in the 2010 Cup Match, including two off Rodney Trott, but this one was the most spectacular catch of the match. Here he jumps over bowler Trott in mid-crease to hold onto a skied chance from Jacobi robinson.

Inspired by Bermuda Alexandra Mosher Studio Jewellery Bermudian artist Alexandra Mosher draws from the island’s natural beauty to create inspired, sculptural jewellery. “I create expressive and original pieces; they’re certainly conversation starters,” she explains. “There is nothing more fascinating than taking art as we know it and giving it a whole new context on the body. I make sculptures to be worn.” Considering Alexandra’s background as an artist, it is no wonder her intricately sculpted jewellery designs have been influenced by her studies in fine art. “I developed a love for craft at a very young age, and was often creating little presents for my parents out of assembled found objects,” she told us. “My family still has a collection of pretty little things I made them.” Alexandra studied Studio Art at the College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts and later, Jewellery Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. She launched her line of jewellery in 2005 and since that time has won several prestigious awards for her collections. Her process involves the ancient technique of lost wax casting; she first hand carves her designs in wax and then casts them in silver and gold in limited numbers. “I remember reading an art critic’s review of my work and feeling like I was on the right path when he said he was surprised at how I could create such original pieces at such an affordable price.” Although her work is highly coveted, she has something for every level of collector. Alexandra is perhaps best known for her Bermuda Reef Collection in which she incorporates Bermuda’s famous pink sand into sterling silver and gold to create captivating pieces of wearable art.

Inspired by Bermuda Alexandra Mosher Studio Jewellery

“‘Is it a gemstone?’ people ask me, and I just love watching their reaction when I explain how I’ve set our beautiful sand into each unique piece.” She told us that visitors often go on to say their daughter, sister or friend would never forgive them if they didn’t bring a little something from her pink sand collection back home as a gift. “It warms my heart to hear that,” she beams.

Finding a little piece of your own is a delightful experience. You can find the lovely pink Alexandra Mosher Studio Jewellery Boutique in the Washington Mall at #7 Reid Street in Hamilton, her new flag ship store at 5 Front Street in Hamilton and some of her collections at A.S. Cooper & Son’s stores island-wide. For infomation or to shop online call 441 236 9009 or visit www.alexandramosher.com.

Stay Beautiful

Summer Beauty Essentials Lyndsey Scott-Furtado, Beauty Advisor & Aesthetician, A.S. Cooper & Sons, Ltd.

The height of summer definitely beckons for a less-ismore approach when it comes to your beauty routine. Winter’s full coverage foundations and dark lips are replaced with lightweight tinted moisturizers, a couple of swipes of mascara and some sun safe SPF. Whether you’re out on a boat, sipping cocktails on the beach or barbequing in the Bermuda sun, consider these your summer necessities.

The Tinted Moisturizer The La Mer Reparative Skin Tint is so much more than just a tinted moisturizer. The healing powers of La Mer’s miracle broth helps to perfect the complexion while smoothing out lines and wrinkles. SPF 30 and antioxidants help to guard against environmental stressors that can cause the skin to prematurely age. With a healthy wash of color, and a lightweight feel this is an excellent alternative to foundation.

The Waterproof Mascara Without a doubt, waterproof mascara is essential for Bermuda’s humidity and recreational water activities. Estee Lauder’s cult mascara Sumptuous Extreme waterproof is my tried and tested, stay put mascara. It gives outrageous volume and separation without the risk of the dreaded panda eye effect. Be sure to use an oil based eye makeup remover such as Bobbi Brown’s Instant Long-wear Eye makeup remover for easy, hassle free removal.

The Foot Cream Those summer sandals and flip flops can really take a toll on our feet. Let’s face it, nobody likes to see dry, cracked heels, not to mention the fact it can feel pretty uncomfortable. Experience the walking on clouds feeling with Clarin’s Foot Beauty Treatment Cream. Shea Butter and Cashew nut oil nourish and smooth dry skin while Arnica helps to relieve swelling and fatigue leaving your feet looking and feeling flip flop ready.

The Deodorant While staying fresh is an all year round essential, the heat and humidity of summer can make deodorant jump up on our list of priorities. Origins No Offense deodorant stick uses nature’s own odor eliminators. With natural scents of orange, Jasmine and blackcurrant it provides all day invisible protection. The best part is, it’s free of Alcohol and Aluminum.

For more Beauty advice, book a one-on-one with Lyndsey Scott-Furtado by calling 441-295-3961. A.S. Cooper Main store located at 59 Front Street, Hamilton.

Treasures of the Sea Atlantic Jewellery Studio BY BRIGITTA WOHLMUTH

“The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.” Jacques Cousteau Inside of the Washington Mall is a store with ocean blue walls, whimsical marine décor in the windows, and unique handmade jewellery displayed from wall to wall. As you step inside, you get the feeling of being below deck on an elegant pirate ship filled with prized jewels of the Atlantic. And the treasures you will find there are endless. Bermuda Medallions, Historic Hog Penny replicas, a myriad of stackable rings, necklaces created with mystical gems and Bermuda’s iconic pink sand and sea glass… “We do a lot of nautical and ocean themed pieces, but I don’t like to limit myself either” says the shop owner, Jacquie Lohan. With over 20 years experience, you could say she is one of Bermuda’s more accomplished jewellers. She loves working with precious metals and gemstones, but she’s also a passionate surfer whose infatuation with the ocean reveals itself in Atlantic Jewellery Studio’s collections. Since establishing the business, she’s won numerous awards and even had her Jewellery featured on a Bermuda postage stamp. But she’s not one to hog the spotlight and has consistently celebrated the work of others. There’s ‘something for everyone’ in her showroom, where you’ll find not only her designs on display, but also designs made by fellow artist-friends and most importantly her apprentice, Jocelyn Powell. “Jocelyn has been with me for over 12 years. She is so talented and makes a lot of the pieces here,” Jacquie says. Jocelyn crafts many lovely designs out of Bermuda elements such as pink sand, cedar, and the store’s extensive collection of gemstones and pearls. She also collaborates with Jacquie to design one of the studio’s most popular creations ‘The Bermuda Medallion’. The silver-sculpted pendants are truly unique pieces fit for any aspiring mermaid. They contain rare pieces of our coloured sea-glass, pink sand, replicas of tiny sea-shells cast in silver, and resemble the little tide-pools left on the rocks by the waves. “I think they really capture the essence of Bermuda” says Jocelyn. The medallions are wonderful keepsakes that let you cherish the Island forever.

Ocean View Dining Mickey’s, Henry VIII, Bella Vista Henry VIII 69 South Road, Southampton, 441 238 1977

Sit outside on the patio at Henry VIII’s to enjoy spectacular views of the ocean with your meal. From this perspective, the South Shore is an infinite blue horizon stretching as far as the eye can see. This premier restaurant is one of the perfect places to relax and unwind on any day of the week. As one of Bermuda’s oldest remaining Pub’s, Henry’s has that authentic “old world English charm”, but don’t think for a second that your choices will be limited to Steak or Fish and Chips. Their menu is continental and extensive, including pub fare, but also a gourmet lunch and dinner menu, hot and cold canapés, and a full sushi bar. In everything they do, the standard has to be “fit for a king”, so if you’re looking for a truly majestic dining experience this is the place to be. They also host regular live entertainment on Thursday- Sunday nights.

Bella Vista 5 Port Royal Golf Course, Southampton, 441 232 0100

Of course, if beautiful views of the ocean are what you desire than there’s a restaurant named after that very purpose. Bella Vista sits atop Port Royal Golf Course - ranked among one the world’s best public golf courses by Golf Digest and named Bermuda’s finest course by the New York Times. But you don’t have to be the slightest bit interested in the sport in order to dine at their award-winning restaurant. Owned by the dynamic Executive Chef Livio Ferigo, he brings the vibrant flavors and charisma of Italy wherever he goes. He actually owns three fabulous restaurants (Bonefish and Café Amici in Dockyard), as well as this culinary gem. His reputation precedes him and he has a way of winning customers over, not only with his culinary skills, but also with his vivacious personality, so don’t be surprised if he comes out of the kitchen to introduce himself as giving customers a personable experience is certainly his forte. But the hospitality isn’t the only thing to write home about. At Bella Vista, you can enjoy fine dining at its best, including delicious seafood, authentic homemade pasta, as well as a traditional Chicken Curry (prepared by Head Chef Raj) that’s simply out of this world!

Celebrating 10 years in business, Bolero has established itself as both a staple and an anomaly in Bermuda’s restaurant scene. Owned by the dynamic and creative Chef Johnny Roberts; it’s a place where the “foodies” go, loved for its team of passionate chefs, friendly servers, innovative food and unpretentious setting. Bolero has won at least one award nearly every year since it opened, and despite its high profile, welcomes people from all walks of life – just as a true brasserie should. Whether dressed in a suit and tie or in shorts and sandals, they keep a table waiting for anyone looking for good, hearty food. An ever-changing menu keeps things exciting for both the chefs and loyal patrons, while a number of favorite specials have stood the test of time, earning them a fixed place on the menu as ‘Bolero Classics’. The spacious interior of the restaurant and large canopy (with unobstructed views of Hamilton Harbour) are just a couple of the features that make Bolero a popular place for hosting private parties and events. But regardless of Bolero’s many amenities, the impeccable service, and jovial atmosphere, it’s primarily the food that people come for. Make a reservation today and your taste buds will thank you later.

Do You Know About Bermuda’s Shark OIl Barometers? BY HORST AUGUSTINOVIC

Bermudians, especially St. David’s Islanders, have for centuries used the oil of a shark’s liver to predict storms and other severe weather. The oil is poured into a bottle and hung outside. After a while the appearance of the oil alters consistently with changes in the weather, from a clear golden color to milky white during an approaching storm. There are several theories on why shark oil changes with the whether. The one that seems most likely is that electrical changes in the atmosphere affect the shark’s liver and alert the shark to move to deeper water before a bad storm. When removed from the shark, the oil retains this function.

The Shark Oil is clear and the owner has gone fishing.

The Shark Oil is cloudy Hurricane Fabian in 2003.
