Bermuda’s location as a half-way point of call between British colonies in the Western Atlantic and Great Britain itself, was considered an important location for a Dockyard, especially a dock capable of lifting large war ships. This issue commemorates the July 1869 arrival of the HM Floating Dock Bermuda and later the July 1902 arrival of the Admiralty Floating Dock 1 (AFD 1). The Bermuda Athletic Association invited Harvard, Yale and Princeton’s rugby teams to come to Bermuda for a friendly scrum, offering the students a $50 travel stipend. The spring break tradition of sun and sport was born. By the 1950’s Rugby Week became known as College Week, and later Spring Break.

In 1948 Life Magazine covered the Bermuda Rugby Week in a cover story proclaiming, “It is one continuous party for 500 US collegians.” Soon Bermuda became an annual springtime playground for elite Ivy Leaguers – and those who hoped to marry them. But by the late 1950s rising college enrollment and affluence allowed the masses to crash the party and the seven days of revelry became known simply as College Week.

Bermudians, Rugby Week was sure to pay off. They can expect to meet at least one fourth of the collegians again – as honeymooners.” Many of them did. During the 1950’s and 1960’s Bermudians and visitors alike were expected to adhere to a strict dress code and students here during college week often came into conflict with that idea. Police Officers were directed to tactfully issue a notice called a ‘Green Ticket’ to anyone they considered to be improperly dressed in public. For example if they felt that the length of a woman’s skirt was too short, or if her shorts were, well - too short! In 1962 a U.S. newspaper reported that a Hamilton police constable, while measuring a young lady’s shorts, turned ruddy red right up to his helmet when she threw her arms around him and implored, “Henry, let’s get married right away.” And so
the Green Tickets were largely ignored and instead became treasured souvenirs to hang on a sorority house wall. But not just short shorts were taboo. So were hair curlers. This time of year, after the hustle and bustle of the holidays, I like to go into design-mode. Our beautiful island has always been my muse and after releasing over 50 colours of shorts, I’m still inspired by what Bermuda has to offer. This year I am noticing a trend towards botanical prints in fashion. For me, the beautiful flora of the Botanical Gardens has always drawn my attention. No wonder I’ve designed shorts inspired by the beautiful oleander and passion Fruit flowers.
Although the sea is much too cool for a swim at this time of year (for us Bermudians anyway), the crystal-clear shades of blue are hard to tear your gaze away

January 24 through June, Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art, Botanical Gardens, Paget Over the past 150 years many artists sailed to Bermuda to escape the harsh northern winters – this exhibit showcases the artwork of the early 20th century Plein Air artists with artwork from Masterwork’s permanent collection. Heidi Cowen, a sixth generation Bermudian, runs Byways Tours and offers an up-close and personal look at the island from her eight-seater van. Her tours last five to six hours and revolve around her passion for her island home and its incredible history. Every tour includes a visit to Gibb’s Hill Lighthouse, where Heidi’s grandfather was the lighthouse keeper, plus a stop for a picnic lunch. Bermuda Festival of the Performing Arts
Come Together The Bermuda Festival of the Performing Arts is thrilled to announce an exciting and diverse lineup of Bermudian and international artists for its 2020 season. In its 45th year, the theme of the 2020 Bermuda Festival is “Come Together”, which Bermuda Festival Chairman, David Skinner, explains as a message intended to build bridges between people in the community using the medium of the performing arts. Running from January 17 to March 14, 2020, the Bermuda Festival lineup includes Joy T. Barnum, Mohawk Radio Unplugged (featuring Mia Chambray and James
Gregory), the Tony Bari Trio, John Woolridge and many other local artists. Opening international artists are Naturally 7, and the featured international artist in 2020 is jazz icon, Dianne Reeves. The Bermuda Festival is also excited to present Portuguese fado singer, Ana Moura, and Zimbabwean a capella group, Nobuntu. Fans of Shakespeare’s classic, “Romeo and Juliet,” are in luck, as the tragedy will be the Bermuda Festival’s Shakespeare on the Rock presentation and will also be performed by Ballet Cymru. Mr. Skinner said, “We live in a world that can, at times, feel increasingly polarised, and the power of the arts to bridge gaps between us is unique.” Along with the Bermuda Festival’s Deputy Chair, Gita Blakeney Saltus, Mr. Skinner encouraged everyone to “try something different” - even if they have not heard of some artists or are not sure if they will like them. Assuring the public that the calibre of both local and international artists will be first class, Mr. Skinner continued, “The price of admission gets you in the door; the experiences and feelings you take home with you are free. Off the beaten track in Smith’s parish, this popular locals’ beach is a little less crowded than the western south shore destinations, but still boasts soft sand and great swimming and snorkeling. Bermuda Railway Trail
Bermuda’s Railway Trail is a unique combination of natural and cultural heritage and provides a safe, scenic way to explore the island. The trail covers the now defunct railway which was built between 1926 and 1931, with tracks laid as close to the shore as possible in some areas, and on bridges over the water in others. The 21 mile-route operated for 17 years before closing due to crippling operating costs. Whale Watching March brings the beginning of whale watching season, when majestic humpback whales make their migration from the warm waters of the Caribbean north to the rich feeding grounds of the North Atlantic. The flowers, plants and shrubs range from natives and endemics to imported exotics, and there is a formal garden and sensory garden. The gardens are a lovely location for a relaxing walk or you can join the Bermuda Botanical Society’s free tour on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at 10.30 am, departing from the Visitor Centre. Explore historic homes Mitchell House
DUKE OF KENT STREET, TOWN OF ST. GEORGE Built in the early 1700’s, Mitchell House is a classic example of Bermudian vernacular architecture and home to the St. George’s Historical Society Museum, one of the island’s oldest museums. The traditional welcomingarms entranceway, outside water tank, kitchen garden, period furnishings and artwork date from Bermuda’s early years. The house was once home to Isabella Archer, a successful free black tavern owner, and at one time used as a school house. QUEEN STREET, CITY OF HAMILTON Par-la-Ville is a stately home built in the early 1800’s, about the same time Hamilton became Bermuda’s capital, by William Perot. Mr. Perot’s son, William B. Perot, laid out and planted the gardens which today make up Queen Elizabeth Park, a lovely public park next to the house. W. B. Perot was Bermuda’s first postmaster and his office is today Perot Post Office, little changed from the mid-1800’s. Par-la-Ville features a lovely wraparound verandah and the front entrance is dwarfed by a rubber tree planted in 1847. Today it is home to the Bermuda Historical Society, which displays a superb collection of Bermuda silver, cedar furniture and Boer War prisoner’s artefacts, and the Bermuda National Library.

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF BERMUDA, DOCKYARD The focal point of the Royal Naval Dockyard is a grand structure which reflects the might of British naval strength in the 1800’s – Commissioner’s House. The unique building, with a prefabricated cast, wrought iron structural framework, and wraparound veranda, became derelict after the Royal Navy departed Bermuda in the 1950’s. Restoration began in the 1980’s and the property opened as the Maritime Museum in 2000. Today it is part of the National Museum of Bermuda and houses fascinating exhibits describing the island’s links with the West Indies and Azores, defense heritage, coins and banknotes, and the slave trade, plus an art installation depicting Bermuda’s history. Explore historic Forts
Fort Hamilton PEMBROKE Enjoy magnificent views over the City of Hamilton and its harbour. The upper levels and battlements have been landscaped with lawns, which make a fine place for a picnic. Entry is across a wooden bridge over the deep dry-moat and there are plenty of cannons and ramparts inside.
If walking from Front Street head east and take a left towards King Street. Walk up the steep incline of Kings Street and turn right to Happy Valley Road. Fort Hamilton is on your right.

ST. GEORGE’S Packed with historic exhibits, artifacts, and a well preserved interior, this stone built fort houses a museum and is one of Bermudas most impressive structures and in the old artillery store there is an exhibit of the fort’s development over four centuries.

FERRY REACH, ST. GEORGE’S The egg shaped fort was built in 1823 and features a moat, 9-11 foot thick walls of Bermuda stone, and a drawbridge. It is located on a hill at Ferry Reach Park, near Whale Bone Bay, a section of the Railway Trail and other coastal defence sites. Over five centuries, hundreds of vessels have come to grief on Bermuda’s encircling reefs due to pilot error, raging storms, inaccurate charts and the historical inability to accurately determine position at sea. These wrecks are more than a collection of fascinating and precious objects— they are material records of Bermuda’s interaction with the Atlantic World, offering insight into life on board ship and the technology, activities, craftsmanship and cultures of the past. Not everyone has the opportunity to explore Bermuda’s shipwrecks in their watery habitat so an exhibit at the National Museum of Bermuda, Shipwreck Island, Sunken Clues to Bermuda’s Past, brings the island’s earliest shipwrecks, as well as their artefacts, stores and histories to land.

Shipwreck Island tells the story of Bermuda’s discovery, early settlement and history from 1505 to 1684 through the lens of a collection of 16th– and 17th– century shipwreck artefacts recovered from local waters. It features over 1,500 objects, including large cannon, rare New World indigenous weapons, intact olive jars, silver coins, gold ingots, colonial pottery, medical, navigation and ship tools and exotic trade goods from the New World and Asia. The exhibit explores life aboard ship, the people who discovered the shipwrecks, marine archaeology and the importance of protecting our underwater cultural heritage for future generations.
