from the Editor Welcome Sun Lovers!

Pink sand beaches, turquoise waves, rum swizzle, cricket matches, dancing gombeys, and a host of other uniquely Bermudian attractions are in the limelight this season. It’s officially summertime (yayy!!), arguably the most idyllic season to visit Bermuda and get a true taste of island-life. So much more than just the temperature is heating up on these 21 square miles of paradise; from tours, to concerts, to iconic national events, there is no shortage of things to do in Bermuda from July to September. (And if you feel like doing nothing other than lying on the beach with a cocktail in hand, there’s no shame in that either!) Be sure to check out the Summer of ‘19 Bermuda Bucket List on page 10, for our suggestions on must-do and see experiences and attractions. Our Summer Calendar on page 14 includes a list of all the exciting summer events, parties, concerts, and national holidays, as well as a list of Ongoing Tours and Activities, starting on page 18. The Explore Section, starting on page 28, is full of site-seeing suggestions as well as maps of Hamilton, Dockyard and St. George’s to help you get around. There’s also a handy pull-out map of the whole island in the center of the book for your convenience. We hope you’ll find this guidebook useful during your stay with us. It’s designed to help you experience Bermuda your way, and if you are looking for even more to do, visit Bermuda.com. We’d love to hear about your stay and ask that you keep in touch with us on our social media. Please send us your pictures, questions, comments and reviews on Facebook and Instagram @BermudaDotCom.

Head straight to The National Museum of Bermuda and solve sunken clues of Bermuda’s past or admire the 1,000 square foot mural that spans two floors and

Enjoy patio views and great live entertainment during an early lunch at Bonefish Bar & Grill. We love the fresh fish tacos. Take the bus back, routes #7 and #8, Dockyard – Hamilton, or a completely different scenic experience.

Treasures

of the Sea Atlantic Jewellery Studio By Brigitta Wohlmuth

“The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.” -Jacques Cousteau Inside of the Washington Mall is a store with ocean blue walls, whimsical marine décor in the windows, and unique handmade jewellery displayed from wall to wall. As you step inside, you get the feeling of being below deck on an elegant pirate ship filled with prized jewels of the Atlantic. And the treasures you will find there are endless. Bermuda Medallions, Historic Hog Penny replicas, a myriad of stackable rings, necklaces created with mystical gems and Bermuda’s iconic pink sand and sea glass…

jewellers. She loves working with precious metals and gemstones, but she’s also a passionate surfer whose infatuation with the ocean reveals itself in Atlantic Jewellery Studio’s collections. Since establishing the business, she’s won numerous awards and even had her Jewellery featured on a Bermuda postage stamp. But she’s not one to hog the spotlight and has consistently celebrated the work of others. There’s ‘something for everyone’ in her showroom, where you’ll find not only her designs on display, but also designs made by fellow artist-friends and most importantly her apprentice, Jocelyn Powell. “Jocelyn has been with me for over 12 years. She is so talented and makes a lot of the pieces here,” Jacquie says. Jocelyn crafts many lovely designs out of Bermuda elements such as pink sand, cedar, and the store’s extensive collection of gemstones and pearls. She also collaborates with Jacquie to design one of the studio’s most popular creations - ‘The Bermuda Medallion’. The silver-sculpted pendants are truly unique pieces fit for any aspiring mermaid. They contain rare pieces of our coloured sea-glass, pink sand, replicas of tiny sea-shells cast in silver, and resemble the little tide-pools left on the rocks by the waves. “I think they really capture the essence of Bermuda” says Jocelyn. The medallions are wonderful keepsakes that let you cherish the Island forever. “We do a lot of nautical and ocean themed pieces, but I don’t like to limit myself either” says the shop owner, Jacquie Lohan. With over 20 years experience, you could say she is one of Bermuda’s more accomplished

and labourers, and later in the 20th century some teachers, doctors, lawyers and police officers, thus enriching the Islands’ cultural fabric. The first major wave of migration took place in 1894 to escape the sugar industry depression and rebellions and riots in Haiti and Jamaica. Centuries of sea-borne history link Bermuda to the West Indies. While geographical isolation sets Bermuda apart, its people share with their Caribbean counterparts not only the bond of interwoven families but the mutual legacy of colonial development, trade, piracy, slavery, hurricanes and shipwrecks. On display at the National Museum of Bermuda is an exhibit that explores Bermuda’s ties with the archipelago that lies 800 miles south, celebrating the long-time cultural, political and family ties to the Caribbean. Despite the distance separating Bermuda and the West Indies, their fortunes have always been deeply linked. Since the first days of settlement in the 1600s, Bermudians have travelled to trade and live in the Caribbean. Their expeditions took them to Providence Island (off Nicaragua), St. Lucia, Trinidad, the Bahamas, Barbados and the Turks Islands. Likewise, West Indian immigrants moved north to Bermuda: at first many artisans

Bermuda never practiced the plantation slavery of the larger British islands, yet slavery existed for 200 years, and black Bermudians share the roots of that legacy. Many white families too can trace their heritage southward. Locals of both races still carry telltale surnames from St. Kitts, St. Lucia, Barbados, Dominica, Trinidad, Jamaica, the Turks & Caicos and other West Indian islands.

Today, Bermuda and the West Indies compete for tourists and offshore business, yet they enjoy political, sporting, and cultural ties built on their shared heritage. Do you know About...

Bermuda in the 1600’s By Horst Augustinovic

With fifty settlers on board, The Plough reached Bermuda in 1612. Sent by the Virginia Company, The Plough was under the command of Richard Moore, Bermuda’s first Governor. He at once created a permanent settlement on this isolated and uninhabited island, keeping in mind the need to supply food from Bermuda to the important settlement in Virginia. First of all, shelters had to be built and defences erected against the possible invasion by Spaniards who were expected to claim this strategically important island for themselves. Having neglected Bermuda for decades, the Spaniards did get concerned when they heard exaggerated tales of the immense wealth, especially from pearl diving and the discovery of ambergris, which could be found on this small island. Besides, they resented the fact that Bermuda was being settled by the hated English. So in March 1614, it was decided to

test Bermuda’s defences and uproot the settlement once and for all. What happened next was described as follows...

from the King’s Castle Master Moore made but two shot, which caused them presently depart. Mark here the handywork of divine providence for they had but three quarters of a barrel of powder and but one shot more and then powder by carelesnesse was tumbled downe under the mussels of the two pieces, were discharged, yet not touched with fire when they were discharged. Having hardly any powder and only one shot left, it was certainly providential that the Spaniards decided to leave. The early settlers of Bermuda were soon disillusioned when they realized that the island wasn’t quite the Eldorado they had expected. The large block of ambergris

and when the Harpineer, standing ready fitted, sees his opportunity he strikes his Harping-Iron into the Whale.”

Whaling

which was found early on turned out to be a one-off find, pearl diving was a non-starter and planting corn and tobacco proved disappointing. Even the wild hogs, turtles and tame cahows which supplied much of the food early on were soon exhausted. And so these early Bermudians turned to the sea for their livelihood with fishing, whaling and shipbuilding becoming important means of support. Of these endeavours, whaling was certainly the most adventurous and when successful, very rewarding. In 1667 Richard Norwood, the Surveyor of Bermuda, described Whaling rather vividly: “In the Spring-time and fair weather they take one, two or three whales in a day. They are less than those in Greenland, but more lively so that if they be struck in deep water they make into the deep with such violence that the Boat is in danger to be hauled down after them, if they cut not the rope in time. Therefore they usually strike in shoal water. For that purpose they have very good boats manned with six oars. They row gently up to the whale so he will scarcely shun them

When turning to the sea for a better livelihood, privateering became the most rewarding enterprise. With Britain frequently at war, Bermudian ship owners would often receive “Letters of Marque”, allowing them to prey on enemies of the Crown and essentially becoming pirates. The Diorama shows one of the more celebrated episodes involving Rhode Islander Thomas Tew and a number of Bermudians who in 1691 sailed in the Amity to the Gulf of Aden in search of French shipping. As it turned out, they came across a convoy of six Arabian ships, an episode that Henry Wilkinson described in “Bermuda In The Old Empire” as follows: “The tallest of these soon appeared. She was heavily armed and carried 300 soldiers, but Tew, certain that to them discretion would loom large, ran the Amity alongside and boarded forthwith. The ship was carried without loss to the pirates. The booty was so immense that, notwithstanding waste, it yielded £3,000 a man. There was also a store of powder. Tew wished to attack the other ships in turn, but the crew objected, for they now desired nothing as much as a frolic ashore. The Amity was accordingly headed for Madagascar. In due time, Tew made his return voyage, carrying, it was alleged, £100,000 and reached Rhode Island without misadventure.” Much of the ill-gotten gain went into the purchase of land and houses, some of them now fine examples of early Bermudian architecture.
