ur Summer Reading Programme has been underway since June; this year we’re staying close to home. After the success of the Winter Reading Programme, we’re back with “Read around the Rock.” The programme began Monday, June 30th and will run until Saturday, August 16th, 2014. There will be weekly prizes and as well as grand prizes. So how does it work? Using the map of Bermuda as your guide, we’ve split the island into nine categories, from each parish you pick items from the category of the parish. Then when you’re done sign the form and you will be entered into a category to be eligible for the weekly prize. At the western end of the Island Sandys and eastern end St. George’s, there are two games of chance for you to enjoy. In St. George’s it is a game of “Go Fish”, where you must delve the depths to catch a country. Meanwhile, in Sandys there is the “Crown and Anchor” where the roll or slam of the dice will determine your next read. Ask a friendly staff member for details At the completion of all the categoTHE HUNT IS ON: Are you up for the challenge? Here’s what it all means...
T
he majority of the comments focus on being able to download e-books, particularly for Kindle. The Library does offer an e-book lending service that is available via our website www.bnl.bm. Go to the website, click on eBook Downloads and you can immediately start to borrow eBooks with your existing library card. If your card has expired, you have a few options. • If you only wish to borrow eBooks, you can go back to the home page and complete the Online Membership form. A member of the library staff will update your card and contact you via email when it is ready for use. This process normally takes no more than 24 hours. • If you wish to have full membership, you should bring in, or email a copy of your photo ID and a recent bill showing your current address. Again, once your membership has been updated, you are ready to use your card. If you require a new card, the cost is $2.00. Currently our eBook collection is small, but it is growing. One thing I must point out is buying eBooks for a Library is very different to buying eBooks for personal use. At this time there are a number of restrictions put on eBooks for Libraries, particularly with regard to geographical location. We at the Bermuda National Library are only able to purchase books that

have worldwide copyright. Thus, we face challenges with many current bestsellers that may only have a US or UK copyright. The Kindle compatibility App is only available to US Libraries. However, those of you using Kindle Fires or later models of Kindles are able to download some of the titles in our database. In addition, the cost of an eBook for a library is several times more expensive than an individual purchase. A book that can be purchased for $9.99 on Amazon or Audible could cost $99.99 for a library. These are issues faced by libraries around the world, and efforts are being made to work with publishers to make more E-books available to libraries worldwide. For those of you who buy your own books, I say why don’t you come in and give us another try. If you are looking for a book and we do not have it, let us know. If it is a book that will appeal to others, we would definitely consider purchasing it. For those of you who think that the library is old and musty, again I say, come in and give us another try. We are making efforts to modernize and keep our Library up-to-date. For the person who said, “All they have are religious books”, well you definitely have not been into the Library in a long time. We hope you’ll come back and visit us again soon!

knows all too well, but for one striking difference: Roberto’s daughter was lost but never found. And despite the odds he cannot bear to give up hope. Set in the sea and citrus-scented air of the breathtaking Santa Monica Mountains, The Lemon Orchard is an affirming story about the redemptive power of compassion and the kind of love that seems to find us when we need it most.
