CHINA: NO-TRIAL DETAINMENT?
THE CHINESE COAST GUARD (CCG) WAS GIVEN AUTHORITY BY CHINA TO DETAIN FOREIGNERS THAT THEY SUSPECT ARE TRESPASSING THEIR BORDERS FOR A MAXIMUM OF 60 DAYS WITHOUT TRIAL.
As indicated in an article written by Christina Chi for Philstar (May 17), According to Article 257 of the Procedural Regulations of Administrative Law Enforcement, the CCG is allowed to detain foreigners suspected of trespassing and violating entry and exit rules, additionally, the CCG may also detain those who aid others to illegally trespass in and out of China’s territory and those possessing illegal residence and employment Additionally, using an open-sourced translating tool, the rule also indicates that individuals who are suspected of endangering national security and interests, disrupting social and public order, and/or engaging in illegal and criminal activities can also be detained
The administered law is under regulations used to standardize the
PHILIPPINES DESERVES THE RIGHT TO ARREST?
House Deputy Minority Leader Representative France Castro states that the CCG’s power regarding the detention of foreigners is “highly condemnable and not even legal ” Castro states that it is the Philippines who has the right to arrest foreigners and that China has no right to impose such a regulation and that they are the ones trespassing into the Philippines’s territory Castro urges the Philippine government to expedite the filing of a new case against China in the Permanent Court of Arbitration and also calls the ASEAN and the other international communities to condemn the actions of China
CCG’s law enforcement procedures which, according to the Chinese staterun news agency China News Service, would be effective by June 15, 2024 However, the Procedural Regulations of Administrative Law Enforcement of Coast Guard Agencies confirm that the CCG implemented the procedures last May 15, the same date the mission led by Filipino citizens to Scarborough Shoal was launched.
The regulations indicate that the CCG can detain foreigners for 30 to 60 days depending on the approval of their authorities and that the detention shall start after the nationality and identity of the parties involved are ascertained The duration of the detention can also be extended depending on the approval of the Coast Guard agency
Some fear that this may interfere with migration rates between China and the Philippines as the current events involving their coastal territories show the continuing mistreatments of the Filipino fisherfolk by the CCG and with the news of both impending and ongoing war between different nations, Filipino citizens dread if the Philippine’s retaliation would further worsen diplomatic relations with China

According to Neier, males with guns frequently find ways to feed themselves, but vulnerable children suffer from malnutrition throughout the area where they live "I thought that severe obstruction in the delivery of humanitarian assistance amounted to genocide."

GLOBALIZATION WILL MAKE OUR SOCIETIES MORE CREATIVE AND PROSPEROUS, BUT ALSO MORE VULNERABLE
The contemporary world is a whirlwind of constant change. From the everevolving digital landscape to the pressing issues of climate change and geopolitical tensions, navigating this complex environment can feel overwhelming. Yet, within these challenges lie incredible opportunities for collaboration, innovation, and progress
The influence of technology giants on everything from social discourse to global economies is undeniable. Examples of these are Apple, Amazon, Metaverse, Tiktok, and many more.
These corporations wield immense power, shaping how we communicate, access information, and even conduct business. While they offer undeniable benefits, such as fostering innovation, facilitating communication, and driving economic growth, concerns linger about their potential negative impacts Issues of data privacy, algorithmic bias, and the spread of misinformation raise critical questions about the responsible development and regulation of powerful companies. This can be seen through news, and even warnings from different users of multiple platforms
Climate Crossroads
The urgency of climate change demands immediate and decisive action. This is urgent and very important to our world as we are running out of time. The Philippines, an archipelago nation blessed with abundant natural resources, faces significant environmental challenges. Internationally, cooperation is crucial for a sustainable future.
Renewable Energy Advancements in the Philippines:
Harnessing Local Potential: The Philippines boasts immense potential for geothermal, solar, wind, and hydro power Thus, investing in research and development to improve efficiency and affordability of these technologies is crucial, this is imilar to the Bangui Windmills in Ilocos
Microgrids and Community Ownership: Developing localized microgrids powered by renewable sources empowers remote communities and reduces dependence on fossil fuels Community ownership models can create a sense of investment and ensure long-term sustainability Infrastructure and Storage: Upgrading the Philippine power grid to accommodate fluctuating renewable energy sources is essential Developing cost-effective energy storage solutions will further optimize renewable energy integration
International Cooperation for Global Sustainability:
Technology Transfer and Knowledge Sharing: Developed nations can facilitate the transfer of clean technologies and expertise to developing countries like the Philippines. Sharing knowledge on best practices in renewable energy implementation is vital.
Climate Finance and Green Investments: International financial institutions can create accessible funding mechanisms for developing countries transitioning to renewable energy. Incentivizing private sector investments in green technologies is also crucial.
Global Policy Frameworks: Strengthening international agreements like the Paris Agreement creates a unified front in tackling climate change. These agreements should be coupled with mechanisms to ensure accountability and track progress towards sustainability goals.
Relation to Contemporary World
While globalization has contributed to climate change, it also presents opportunities for solutions. International cooperation on regulations, technological advancements, and resource management are crucial in a globalized world to address climate change effectively.
Globalization and Climate Change go hand in hand together, as such, they have a two-way relationship with its effects on each other
Potential Benefits of Globalization for Climate Change:
Spreading Green Technologies:
Globalization can facilitate the transfer of clean technologies like solar panels and wind turbines from developed to developing countries
International Cooperation: Global platforms can encourage international cooperation on climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies. Economic Growth for Sustainability: A strong global economy can provide the resources necessary to invest in renewable energy and sustainable practices.
Globalization's Impact on Climate Change:
Increased Trade and Transportation: The rise in global trade leads to more goods being shipped around the world, often by air and sea, which contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions
Shifting Production: Globalization can lead to the movement of industries to countries with lower environmental regulations, potentially exacerbating pollution This is known as the "pollution haven hypothesis " Fossil Fuel Dependence: The globalized economy relies heavily on fossil fuels for energy, accelerating climate change.
Climate Change's Impact on Globalization:
Disruptions to Supply Chains: Extreme weather events like floods, droughts, and storms disrupt agricultural production and transportation routes, impacting global supply chains
Forced Migration: Climate change can cause sea level rise, desertification, and other environmental changes that displace people, leading to mass migration and straining resources in receiving countries
Resource Scarcity: Climate change can lead to water scarcity and competition for resources, potentially creating international tensions and economic instability
POWERTENDSTO CORRUPT, ANDABSOLUTEPOWER CORRUPTSABSOLUTELY.
Shifting Geopolitical Land
The balance of power on the world stage is constantly evolving. This can be seen in first world countries such as the United States of America, China, and more countries as they gain more power This shift presents both challenges and opportunities. On the one hand, it can lead to increased competition and potential conflict On the other hand, it can also foster a more diverse and collaborative approach to global challenges
Navigating these shifting geopolitical dynamics requires a delicate balance of diplomacy, strategic partnerships, and a commitment to upholding international norms and institutions Multilateral cooperation remains essential for addressing global challenges like climate change, pandemics, and nuclear proliferation
Potential Tensions:
Unequal Benefits: While globalization can bring economic growth, the benefits may not be evenly distributed, leading to resentment and instability in some regions
Loss of Sovereignty: Some governments may feel they have less control over their economies and policies due to global economic forces.
National Security Concerns: Increased international trade can create vulnerabilities in national security, raising concerns about dependence on foreign resources or technology
Relation to Contemporary World
Shifting geopolitical landscapes can disrupt or reshape globalization, but globalization itself can also influence international relations. The future of this relationship depends on how effectively nations can manage trade, address global challenges, and balance national interests with international cooperation.
Globalization and Geopolitics go hand in hand together, as such, they have a two-way relationship with its effects on each other
Impact of Globalization on Geopolitics:
Economic Interdependence: Increased trade and investment can create economic interdependence between countries This can create a disincentive for conflict, as nations become reliant on each other for prosperity Also known as "complex interdependence "
Global Issues Require Cooperation: Global challenges like climate change, pandemics, and cyber threats require international cooperation, even between countries with strained relations
The Spread of Ideas and Values: Globalization facilitates the exchange of ideas, cultures, and political systems. This can challenge existing power structures and lead to demands for political reform within countries
Impact of Shifting Geopolitics on Globalization:
Trade Wars and Alliances: Rising tensions between nations can lead to trade wars and protectionist policies that disrupt the flow of goods and services, hindering globalization. Conversely, new alliances and regional trade agreements can create new avenues for economic integration
The Rise of New Power Centers: The emergence of new economic and military powers can challenge the existing global order and reshape how globalization unfolds. This could lead to a more multipolar world with different trade and economic models
Resource Competition: Geopolitical competition for resources, like oil and rare earth minerals, can disrupt supply chains and affect global energy prices This can be seen in high gas prices and rise of price in necessities.

SOURCE: GMA NEWS BY: ANGELA CABONCEMotorists need to prepare for higher tolls on the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and South Luzon Expressway (SLEX), as the Toll Regulatory Board (TRB) is in the final stages of considering toll rise demands for both roads
In an episode with reporters, TRB Executive Director Alvin Carullo revealed that the NLEX toll rise petition was already in the "advanced stage"
Carullo stated the fee rise might be applied in the coming month According to the TRB official, NLEX's toll raise reach this year covers the second tranche of scheduled rate hikes, which will be carried out in two equal parts, with the first 50% taking effect in 2023
Last June, the TRB authorized NLEx to charge an additional P7 in the open system and P0 36 per kilometer in the closed system
According to Carullo, SLEX toll road concessionaire San Miguel Corp also submitted an application for the start of the second part of its toll hike The TRB official stated that the toll increase might be implemented within a year.
SLEX will see toll increases at the same rate as last year.
Last October, SLEX increased its toll from P10 to P30 depending on the type of vehicle, and from P4 to P8 for vehicles traveling from Calamba to Sto. Tomas, Batangas. Nevertheless, Carullo stated that the TRB was "aware of the inflationary situation "
"It may result in a delay in implementation if ever," he stated
"It depends on the rate of the inflation but in the past it appears that the government is focused on keeping with its duties under the STOAs (Supplementary Toll Operation Agreement) or the contract," he stated However, Carullo stated that "we cannot deny all of the petitions for toll rate increases precisely because they also have to comply with their lenders "
How does this relate to Contemporary World?
Money is an invention that has enhanced the way markets operate.
Inflation takes place when the money supply exceeds the rate of outcome.
Inflation causes difficulties and damages in the economy as buyers and sellers seek ways to avoid the effects it has
PESO DEPRECIATION ‘ONLY TEMPORARY’:
BANGKO SENTRAL NG PILIPINAS
By: Bernadette ZagadaSOURCE: ABS-CBN NEWS
On Monday, May 27, 2024, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) stated that the Philippine Peso has been weakening against the US dollar recently and it is only temporary
It has depreciated to P58 27 to the US dollar, the lowest since November 2022.
BSP Senior Assistant Governor Iluminada Sicat during the Philippine Economic Briefing said “This is only temporary Once things clear up, it will be the fundamentals that will determine the exchange rate ”
Most Asian Markets were also affected by the US economy, Tokyo, Shanghai, Sydney, Seoul, Singapore, Taipei, and Jakarta all rose, though there were losses in Hong Kong, Manila and Wellington
The focus is now turning to the release of the US personal consumption expenditures (PCE) index, which is the Fed’s preferred gauge of inflation
There are possible reasons as to why the peso weakened against the US Dollar:
Global Factors: A strengthening US dollar due to interest rate hikes by the US Federal Reserve is a major influence
Trade Imbalances: The Philippines may be experiencing a trade deficit, where imports are higher than exports, which can decrease demand for the peso Speculation and Capital Flight: Globalization allows for the free flow of capital across borders If investors lose faith in a country's economic stability due to factors like political turmoil or high inflation, they may pull their money out (capital flight) This reduces demand for the currency and weakens it.
Investment Uncertainty: Currency depreciation creates uncertainty for foreign investors, who may be hesitant to invest in a country with a volatile currency This can hinder economic growth, potentially reducing the benefits of globalization
Countries grapple with managing their exchange rates in a globalized environment.
While depreciation can offer some short-term export benefits, it's crucial to weigh the potential downsides like inflation and increased debt burden.

NBA: TATUM, BROWN LEAD THE BOSTON CELTICS PAST INDIANA PACERS FOR 3-0 LEAD
Coach Rick Carlisle anticipates the Indiana Pacers will fight back on Monday night. He acknowledges that no NBA team has ever come back from a 3-0 deficit to win a best-of-seven series, and his players know that a Game 4 victory would only mean another elimination game in Boston. Still, Carlisle is confident his team is ready to keep battling. “We’re going to push even harder on Monday,” Carlisle said on Saturday after their first home playoff loss this season. “Our fans need to come out and be louder than ever, and we’ve got to extend this series. We need to get back on that plane for Game 5.”
Gilbert Sarto Contributor:Out of all the different teams in the National Basketball Association, the Boston Celtics along with the Dallas Mavericks, are one step away towards the NBA Finals. Tatum has been the driving force for the Celtics in this series, scoring a playoff career-high 36 points twice in the first three games. If the Celtics achieve their first series sweep since defeating Brooklyn 4-0 in the opening round of the 2022 playoffs, they could benefit from extra rest depending on the outcome of the Dallas-Minnesota series. However, Boston's immediate focus is on closing out the Pacers. "Over the past few years, we've faced tough battles and our group has learned and grown from them," said Celtics center Al Horford, who hit seven three-pointers in Game 3. "This team is very good and dangerous. There’s a reason they’re here. Even though we're up 3-0, the series could easily have been very different."
