TECHNIQUES GLOSSARY

SUPPORTS

They are two-dimensional surfaces on which a painting or drawing is made. Chipboard: board made from pressed wood fibers with a binder, examples: fibracel, masonite and mdf. Cardboard: material composed of layers of paper based on virgin or recycled fiber. Sheet: made of metal, the most common are copper and zinc. Canvas : cloth, almost always prepared with a primer to paint on it; made of linen, jute, hemp, cotton or synthetic fibers. Paper: thin sheets made from vegetable fiber pulp, manufactured by hand or industrially.

█ PICTORIAL TECHNIQUES

Acr ylic - paint in which the pigments are contained in a polymer emulsion. Watercolor: in it the colors give an effect of transparency, which is achieved because the pigments bind with gum arabic and dissolve in water. Charcoal: Black bars made by charring small twigs from trees such as willow, olive, birch, or heather. Graphit e: agglut inat ed carbon mineral bars, its line is black and gray with a metallic shine. Colored pencils : their lead is made of beeswax and pigments. Oil: mixture of pigments with a binder based on vegetable oils.

Pastel: chalk that is applied dry, made up of pigments bound with rubber. Oil pas t el: these are also colored bars, but in this case their composition includes oil, which gives them a creamy texture. Ink : it is made with the ash resulting from the combustion of resinous woods. It dissolves with water. Mixed: it is the simultaneous use of two or more of the aforementioned techniques, other elements and textures can also be added.

█ GRAPHIC WORK TECHNIQUES

This section deals with graphic art techniques based on cuts made on a matrix, which can be made of materials such as wood or metal, and which are later stamped on a paper support or other material such as canvas or wood. Graphic works are usually limited editions, numbered and signed by the author; sometimes they also have the seal of the workshop that made it. Giclée: artistic impression of a painting by means of its professional digitalization and printed in high quality on cotton paper, photographic paper, or canvas, resulting in a reproduction that is almost faithful to the original. Engraving on met al: a varnishcoated metal plate is used on which the artist traces or stains the shapes. Techniques such as

etching, aquatint, drypoint and roulette are used, among others. Linocut : the plate is made of linoleum, a flexible laminate that is engraved by making cuts with gouges. Lit hography: the matrix plate is made of stone in which it is drawn with a greasy instrument, the area of the drawn line is inked after a process to result in the print. Of f s et lit hography: the inked image on a flat surface is printed on a rubber-coated counter-cylinder and from this is transferred to paper; Off set inks are translucent, which means that when printing one ink on top of another, the colors add up. Mixography: the matrix is cast copper in negative relief that is inked and paper paste is spread on it and introduced into a press, the result is prints with texture and details along the surface. Serigraphy: it is carried out with the transfer of ink through a mesh that is stretched on a frame Woodcut : the plate is made of wood, the drawing is carved on it with gouges or blades. █ SCULPTURE TECHNIQUES

They are three-dimensional works, that is, with volume, they can be made in various techniques: carving in stone or wood, modeling in materials such as clay and ceramics, casting in metals such as bronze and silver.
