Creating has never been easier! With the new 4-Point Placement the positioning of your embroidery or quilting design is extremely simple and precise. This new function allows you to place your designs to exactly suit your project. Simply define four points on the fabric in the hoop and the design is placed proportionally or can be morphed to fit the created boundary.

The B 790 PRO connects with the app allowing you to monitor the status of your embroidery stitchout from any room in your house. Milestones of a family business

Karl Friedrich Gegauf, the founding father of BERNINA, invented the hemstitch sewing machine. This machine could sew 100 stitches a minute, causing a great sensation.

His son Fritz Gegauf took over the factory in Steckborn in Switzerland. He was an engineer through and through whose ideas shaped the company and whose inventions are still in use today.

Fritz invented the first household sewing machine and named it after his favourite mountain in the Eastern Alps in Switzerland – Bernina. And not only that! He then changed the name of the whole company from Gegauf & Co. to BERNINA.

Under Fritz’s direction, the first zigzag sewing machine from BERNINA came onto the market.

Another important milestone occurred: BERNINA launched the first machine with the patented clip-on presser foot and buttonhole sewing function onto the market.

Fritz’s daughter, Odette Ueltschi-Gegauf, took over the company and brought out a sewing machine with a novel presser foot lifter. The Free Hand System, which raises the presser foot via a knee lifter, is still an important feature of almost every BERNINA today.

A BERNINA with electric foot control followed, and in 1981 the first model with the stretch stitch function came out.

Hanspeter Ueltschi, great-grandson of the company’s founder, took over the company from his mother Odette and still manages BERNINA today. Under his leadership, BERNINA has developed into an iconic brand among passionate quilters throughout the world.

BERNINA made further important innovative leaps, culminating in the launch of the world’s first sewing computer with a Microsoft Windows operating system in 2002.

The patented BERNINA Hook was born – an amazing innovation from our Swiss engineers. It combines all the advantages of the world’s previous two best hook technologies and is part of the 4, 5 and 7 Series.

BERNINA went into a new line of business, with two completely new longarm quilting machines including frames.

New embroidery functions were launched by BERNINA on the new 5 Series, the B 790 PLUS and the B 880 PLUS. And BERNINA will continue to be a family-run business in the future as the 5th generation are already at work.

BERNINA celebrated an important anniversary. It was 125 years since the company was founded by Karl Friedrich Gegauf – a very special year! To celebrate, BERNINA brought special limited-edition models with a gold faceplate on to the market, as well as two real gold-plated presser feet and a golden anniversary box.

BERNINA presents a new milestone and launches three revolutionary overlock machines: the L 850, L 860 and L 890. All models feature the unique One-step BERNINA Air Threader and are 100% designed and engineered by BERNINA.

The latest innovation, the B 790 PRO, arrives on the market. It has laser and WiFi technology and can be connected to an app. The 5th generation of the family takes on its first executive management tasks and the 6th generation, Philipp Ueltschi's son, turns one year old.

Tales from inside the sewing box with Inês from "SÊIN fashion"

Inês from “SÊIN fashion” creates fashion items from old bath and beach towels. This allows her to go swimming without having to bring a towel. She can wash her hands and then dry them on her dress. What a unique idea! And the best thing is that everyone can give their favourite towel to Inês so that they can also own such a practical and stylish item of clothing! In our interview, you can find out more about the Portuguese-Austrian fashion artist.

DEAR INÊS, COULD YOU PLEASE TELL US A BIT ABOUT WHO YOU ARE AND WHAT YOU DO?

Hello, I am Inês, I'm 36 and a Portuguese artist from Caldas da Rainha, Portugal, and I have been living in Linz, Austria, for 10 years. I'm very interested in sustainable fashion, zero waste, upcycling and I'm a bit crazy about towels! I founded my fashion label five years ago and focus on reusing old beach towels.

HOW IMPORTANT IS SUSTAINABILITY IN YOUR BUSINESS?

Sustainability is an extremely important topic for me. Unfortunately, the fashion industry is still somewhat absurd in its approach: mass production at low prices, quantity over quality, many of the materials used are produced in an environmentally harmful manner and in poor working conditions. For me, the most sustainable and environmentally friendly way is to make new clothes yourself and create something new from existing materials. This saves natural resources. Even though I'm just one person, I want to have an eco-friendly

influence on fashion and show that upcycling can be cool and become a trend.

YOU MAKE BATH TOWELS FASHIONABLE! THAT'S A UNIQUE IDEA –HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH IT?

After a lot of research and experimentation, towels really caught my attention. These contain at least 90% cotton, and it is difficult to sell used ones. So I thought it was the perfect material!

WHERE DO YOU GET ALL THE TOWELS FROM?

Most of my towels come from a second-hand shop with which I work. And I also get some from the "Volkshilfe" charity shop in Linz, including the lining material for the jackets. I often visit the flea markets in my area to find vintage towels.

ARE YOUR CREATIONS ALL UNIQUE?

As I only work with old or used towels, it's rare that I have two that are exactly the same. So every product is unique.

HOW DID SÊIN FASHION COME ABOUT AND HOW HAS THE BUSINESS DEVELOPED SINCE IT WAS FOUNDED?

It all started with a dress that I sewed for myself. I had found a great towel at a flea market and I made a dress out of it. This was my first towel product and it very quickly became my favourite dress. I could go swimming without having to take a towel with me, and wash my hands after using public toilets and dry them on my dress. So many benefits! Ha ha!

YOU SEW USING BERNINA – DO YOU LIKE YOUR MACHINES?

Ever since I could sew, I've always had a BERNINA by my side. So far I have had two sewing machines and an overlock machine. I work with numerous layers of towels and some of them are quite thick. My BERNINA

is very robust and has a very powerful motor. It's perfect for my work.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE ACCESSORY?

I know this is a completely normal accessory, but I love to sew zippers, so of course the Zipper Foot #4.
