PREFACE
Summer Breeze What could be lovelier than sitting outdoors somewhere and letting the warm summer air caress your face? Lingering over a book, or pottering about in the garden. Feeling the mild breeze around your limbs, creating a sensation of pure well-being. Summer’s the season to kick back and enjoy life – those idle moments on the terrace or in the garden. And why trail around the shops buying seasonal accessories for the balmy weather when you can have fun sewing them for yourself? Kids too are on the lookout for fun – when the weather’s fine, they can take their play tent out into the garden and ‘fly’ their owls there. Beware, though, sewing the tent is likely to get you hooked, once you’ve completed one of these projects, you may not be able to stop! Time to put on your glad rags and go out on the town. We invited you to choose your favourite skirt from the selection offered on our website. Your choice inspired us. Check out page 8 to see how we’ve mixed and matched the skirt, teaming it with a matching jacket for a sophisticated look, and a T-shirt for a sporty one. It’s summer, and that calls for stronger, brighter hues. In ‘Intoxicated with colour’ we’ve chosen simple, in some cases offbeat patterns for you that are quick to sew, so that updating your summer wardrobe will be a real breeze!
Wishing you hours of reading, sewing and crafting enjoyment, Your Editorial Team and Claudia Giesser, Editor-in-Chief
Don’t forget!
For further information, you can also visit our Internet Blog at www.bernina.com/inspiration There, among other things, you’ll find additional tips and photos of the sewing projects. What´s more, you can vote on your favourite model for the spring issue (around 4 weeks after the magazine comes out). Once again, we´re curious to see what your choice will be! 3

4718 Shirt Here, purple serves as a restful focus for our fashionable ensemble. The shirt consists of just two pattern pieces, so you’ll be enjoying this chic creation in no time flat without any tricky sewing-in of sleeves.
4718
4719 Waistcoat Sew this waistcoat in yellow, or choose a somewhat more subtle purple or red, just as the fancy takes you. Here too we’ve aimed for a simple pattern – the front section is cut out with the collar included.

4717 Wraparound skirt Despite its smart looks, this skirt is a breeze to sew. Since it’s a wraparound, there’s no fiddling with zips or buttons – a simple closure does the trick nicely.

Summer’s the season for radiant colours! This sunny yellow will put you in a cheerful frame of mind, even if it’s grey outside.

Summer scarves are one of the must-haves of the season, and lend new life to an older outfit. Simply hem a fabric remnant left over from the skirt along both long edges and fringe the short edges. It’s really so easy that you don’t even need instructions for it!

With the overlocker
4715 Patchwork dress A youthful, bold design combo. Overlocking like this is brilliant fun! Remember, the decorative seams needn’t always disappear inside the dress. Whether or not you sew the dress in size XXS, the little embroidery motif is always an eyecatcher. Embroidery design from the BERNINA ‘Spirit of Geometry’ collection. 12
So many rings and circles – who can be bothered counting them all? We simply gave up, and threw ourselves into the sewing instead!
4716 4
4716 Waterfall dress It’s been a long time since you’ve sewn a dress this fast – you can easily manage two a day at this rate! Normally the border would actually run crossways, but we found the model much more interesting like this. Decide for yourself!

Gardener’s delight 4731
With free-motion couching foot no. 43 4731 Gardening apron Protect your clothes by tying on this jolly apron before repotting those plants. The tools can either be sewn on in free-motion technique with freemotion couching foot no. 43, or created as embroidery designs, as you prefer. With the BERNINA 830, placing two hoop fills side by side is no longer a problem!

Gardening is relaxation as well as work. Pottering about outdoors in the fresh air watching nature unfold is a constant delight. These sewing projects would make great little presents for any gardening enthusiast.
4730 4733 Hat with flower vase A hat with a fresh floral decoration! The little plastic vase with its closure is wedged tightly in place and won’t dribble (florist’s). And thanks to the broad brim, there’ll be no dreaded sunburn on the back of your neck.

4730 Tool belt Thanks to its washable fabric, this tool belt is a practical holder for all sorts of essential bits and pieces such as secateurs, cord or weeders. Use a combination of decorative stitches to embellish the belt as the mood takes you.
4732 Kneeling pads Just the thing in dry weather. The washable fabric is sturdy and spares your knees. A couple of ruffles add a feminine touch.

A bit of felt, a cut or two with the rotary cutter and a couple of straight seams, and voilà – you’ve got a whole new living-room decoration in no time flat! 4736
4736 Lantern-style lamp Here, we’ve revamped the familiar little paper lantern by creating an exclusive-looking lamp out of firm felt. A bit of tulle prevents the lampshade from stretching.
4737 Felt picture Except for the background, you needn’t cut out any straight pieces here. That way, the picture looks more haphazard and less severe. The odd decorative stitch here and there – our example shows BERNINA 820/830 stitches – and a couple of tulle strips make for little eye-catchers.
4735 Self-sealing cushion cover Add a smart accent to even the most sophisticated home dec! This cushion cover completely dispenses with a closure. The ‘Extra Strong’ sewing thread not only provides the final touch, but also ensures durability. 25
