a ys D n tum The first cool days are slow in arriving. For now, we savour the last warm rays of sunshine before the cold winter. Just the right time for light capes and jackets, several examples of which you’ll find in this issue of Inspiration. There’s something for everyone here – quite simple models, or a somewhat more complicated biker-style jacket for experts. But autumn is also a time for snuggling down. We enjoy staying at home, warming ourselves by the fire or another heat source, steaming mug of tea or cocoa in hand. We look for something comfortable to wear, but smart at the same time – after all, you never know what might arrive out of the blue! In terms of comfy but chic, we have just the thing. And since one’s surroundings can always use a bit of beautifying, we’ve naturally got the odd home-dec project for you as well. What would you say to mushroom slippers? Never heard of them before? We find these rustic toadstools quite decorative, and are sure you’ll find a spare spot for one or more, whether as doorstops or pocket decorations. Although the summer parties are over, there are also festivities in autumn – one of which nowadays arouses worldwide interest. Native to Munich, the Oktoberfest celebrated its 200th anniversary back in 2010. “Wiesn-look” accessories have even become super-trendy, perfectly suitable for everyday wear as well as desperately cute. Have a look at page 14 and see for yourself!
Don’t forget! You’ll find all the i-Tips at www.bernina.com/inspiration under “News”, and the embroidery design downloads in the same place under “Downloads”.
Far from living on some distant planet, Inspiration stays in frequent touch with its readers – the only way to steadily improve the magazine. In addition to always being represented on the BERNINA (German-language) Blog, with the voting on the forthcoming issue’s models, we are also always involved in person in the Creative Days held here at our Steckborn premises every autumn. From your emails and in personal conversations we learn what you, our readers, want, and are delighted to take up the recurring suggestions in Inspiration magazine. In this issue and in future ones, therefore, we’ll be offering you the “extra” of an extended size range for suitable models. Right at the forefront here are our cape and simple jacket. We’re also convinced, though, that in the case of our skirt and our “home” theme, one more size offers a good fit for our readers. You are also welcome to email us your suggestions and requests outside of these occasions: redaktion@bernina.com. Wishing you hours of enjoyment browsing and sewing, Your Editorial Team and Claudia Giesser, Editor-in-Chief

Your choice
C hilly d ays The first days of autumn are lurking in the wings, so it’s time for a cosy new wrap. This time, Your Choice on our BERNINA Blog was virtually a draw, so we simply decided to construct the two most popular models for you. The uniform-style coat captured just 8 % of our readers’ votes. At the request of a number of our readers, we’ve extended the size range of these models up to size 48.
5110 Your Choice – Cape This smart cape slips on and off with ease, and is just the thing for the first chilly days of the season, whether you’re out on a drive or window-shopping on foot. The woollen fabric keeps you warmer than you might expect. Tip: Those who enjoy embroidering will find enough room for this on the facings.
5111 Your Choice – Jacket This model is worked with open edges, which makes it much easier to sew. Facings and lining are dispensed with here too, so the jacket can be finished in a single afternoon! If wished, you can embellish the edges with variegated thread, which lends additional sturdiness. 5112 Shawl This gorgeous shawl is ready in no time flat! The fabric is pretty enough without additional embellishment, so we’ve simply hemmed the sides and sewn off two corners for the arms, so that it won’t slip – and voilà – done!

Ruffled collar: Gathering foot no. 16 12
r e st A do rn me nt s a c ut a bo ve t he It needn’t always be a necklace or bracelet. A distinctive collar, a special cuff or a covered Alice band can give more conventional jewellery a run for its money.
5125 Wristlets with ruffle Two discarded men’s shirts or blouses, a dash of effort, and you’re ready for a night on the town. New fabric can be used instead, if preferred. The dainty covered buttons (Prym) lend a touch of femininity to the wristlets. 5126 Ruffled collar Breathe new life into shirts that have fallen out of favour with a bit of creative recycling! You can sew on the finished decorative collar, or attach it invisibly to your shirt or jumper at two different spots with a safety pin for temporary use. 5127 Grosgrain-ribbon cuff The glamorous touch imparted by the grosgrain ribbon makes these cuffs fit for a special night out, with the square rhinestone buttons further underscoring the effect. 5127 Grosgrain-ribbon Alice band The look is rounded out perfectly by a matching Alice band. Alternatively, you can sew the grosgrain-ribbon flower onto a pin to create an attractive brooch.

C osy c lo t he s t o war m t he soul Heavy jerseys and soft knits are an invitation to kick back and relax. This jersey can even be worked on both sides – the back has a muted striped pattern.
5118 Asymmetrical shirt The smart cut of this shirt belies its comfort. The jazzy buttons further highlight the unusual line of the garment. Construction is quick and easy with the overlocker.
5119 Trousers These wide trousers are simplicity itself to sew, since they consist of just two pattern pieces. Everything, including waistband and ribbing, is right there from the start. Elastic ensures that it all stays in place.
5120 Layer Tee Instead of a layer tee you could also call this a bodywarmer, as that is precisely the purpose of this pullover. The soft knit is too cuddly for words. The decorative scarf piece is secured to the shoulder and pulled onto the front through a sort of buttonhole.

A fung us a mon g us It’s enough to (re-)inspire you with a passion for fungi hunting! In autumn, mushrooms sprout in large numbers from the forest floor – or, as seen here, occasionally from your sewing machine. The ones you make are guaranteed non-toxic!
5140 Mushroom slippers These stylish slippers are quick and easy to sew. Soft anti-slip tablecloth sheeting or else “Sock-STOP” (Efco, via craft shops) protects against slipping. The ’shrooms were embroidered, then automatically cut out with the CutWork Tool. You’ll find the illustrated instructions at www.berninablog.com

5141 Bag This practical bag with its two zips on the top section will be your indispensable companion this autumn. Thanks to its colour scheme, it’s the perfect match for all the new autumn shades. Created with the BERNINA Embroidery Software Version 6, the mushrooms are embroidered and appliquéd. Note the cross-stitched stems and the new “stamping function” that we used on the grass. 5142 Child’s backpack It’s not just the little ones who’ll be delighted with this project! The big white polka dots were cut out from crafting felt and needle-punched into the fabric, without any threads whatsoever.

5143 Door stopper For draught-dodgers! Autumn is the season of cold air currents and banging doors, but our fetching little mushroom will hold them shut. Also suitable for outside doors, depending on how heavy the filling is. Fabric: Swafing With Embroide Version 6
