Preface

Sewing and the pursuit of happiness Winter’s not yet over, but already we’re feeling the urge for something new. Out with the ice crystals and snowmen – we’re longing for nature in bud and the beginning of the cycling season! Creating our own clothes and home furnishings just before the change in seasons is particularly rewarding. Bubbling with energy and enthusiasm, we start preparing our spring sewing projects, and experience a double blast of happiness, from both the excitement of anticipation and the joy of the creative process. Sewing makes people happy, full stop. Not only can you whip up fashionable clothing or something attractive for your own four walls, but you can also create little works of art, or tame three-dimensional “snakes” by fashioning them into pillows or bowls. And if you can also embroider, paint and cut out with your BERNINA, your happiness is practically guaranteed. So head to your machines and get cracking! Wishing you hours of fun with these projects, Claudia Giesser, Editor-in-Chief

Diversity in fashion is the name of the game The spring 2014 fashion trends are so varied that deciding on a single style may prove more than a little difficult. But why limit yourself to just one trend, with so many different projects in this issue to tempt you? Our sporty rain cape with detachable hood is functional, practical and easy on the eye. Naturally, we suggest accessorising it with a colourful bag that converts into a backpack in no time flat – the height of trendiness! Sweet is still “in”, though: worn solo or teamed with a bolero jacket or leather top, a floral dress is like a breath of spring – three “feel-good” looks to usher in the first rays of sun. From the “purism” of our chic coat with matching dress and bag, to cool, colourful and fun clothes for your high-energy Zumba class, to appliquéd cuddly toy animals in glowing pastel colours for wee ones – this spring, anything goes! Tanja Gross, Designer

lo re ! C ol ou r fu l b ut t on s ga Buttons not only serve as a closure, but more and more often as decoration for the most varied items.

5830 Belt Here, an anorak cord forms the framework for this inventive belt. Homemade buttons and nuts from the tool box help create this genuine one-off. 5831 Bracelet The covering on the bracelet buttons is somewhat more intricate. The fabrics were embroidered with various designs which you too can download from our website. The buttons needn’t be sewn on, but are simply threaded on a piece of satin tape which simultaneously serves as a closure. 5832 Flowerpot cover Buttons also work as real eye-catchers in one’s living space. They’re shown off to particularly good advantage on this flowerpot cover. These buttons are also simply threaded on rather than sewn on.

t ub e b e Tu b e b e o r n o t Tubes conjure a 3D effect onto pillows and as bowls. Cords or fillers sometimes lend sturdiness to the shapes.

5855 “Fortune cookie” pillow This pillow project is the ideal way to upcycle jersey remnants! Tone-on-tone like here, or a mixture of colours, the choice is yours. Long strips of fabric were simply sewn with a glamour thread and the overlocker, then cut into pieces. 5856 Patchwork pillow A nifty way to repurpose fabric remnants, this truly unique project was created in a flash from remnants from the fortune cookie pillow and the bowl. The cords were sewn on with Double-cord foot no. 60C. 5857 Knotted pillow Stuffed and knotted, jersey remnants yield a pillow that’s both clever and highly decorative. Here, the 2-thread flatlock seam – sewn with glamour thread and the overlocker – is particularly eye-catching. 5858 Bowls The Double-cord foot not only lets you sew cords onto fabric, but allows you to create entire bowls in the most varied shapes and in no time flat. You can check out how this is done on the Tips pages 20/21.
