It’s rewarding to have an exhibition devoted to Raymond Hendler’s work from the late 1950s and early 60s. This was an important transitional time, not just for Hendler, but for American art generally. Basic goals, and basic sensibilities were adjusting. In the studio, many shifted from creating abstractions informed by one’s own subconscious to making art that reflected universally recognized signifiers of the world at large. This exhibition at Berry Campbell is accompanied by a 16-page catalogue with an exhibition essay by Phyllis Braff. Raymond Hendler: Raymond by Raymond (Paintings 1957-1967) opens July 8, 2021 and continues through August 20, 2021.
