Movember is a global movement that works to raise awarenes of the issues in men’s health. The name comes from the idea of Moustache November or Movember. The idea behind Movember is that on November 1, men start clean-shaven face. For the rest of the month, these selfless and generous men groom, trim and wax their way into the annals of fine moustachery. Supported by the women in their lives, Mo Sistas, Mo Bros raise funds by seeking out sponsorships for their Mo-growing efforts. The Berry College Men’s Lacrosse team effectively became walking, talking billboards for 30 days of November 2015. By growing a Mo, they raised awareness, prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health.

2016 Season Preview Part 1 The Berry men’s lacrosse shared the Southern Athletic Association Regular Season Championship again in 2015. According to Head Coach Curtis Gilbert, the program wants more. They seek the title outright; an SAA Tournament Championship; and a berth to the NCAA Championship, which has eluded them the last three seasons. -Tough Schedule Upcoming Aggressive out-of-conference game scheduling and another talented freshmen class look to position the Vikings for both national and post-season success. The Vikings will face a number of traditionally strong programs, including Roanoke, Denison and Washington College. The 2016 schedule features four nationally-ranked teams as part of the Vikes’ regular season slate. “Our scheduling is aggressive, but exciting and offers a great opportunity,” said Gilbert. “I wouldn’t schedule the best, if I didn’t think we could be the best.” -Replacing Graduated Student-Athletes The 2015 season featured the second-ever graduating class of Berry seniors and was also the second time the Vikings have been SAA Conference Co-Champions in three years. The 2015 graduating class of 10 seniors helped lead a young nucleus of freshmen to a 12-5 season and an SAA Championship game appearance, falling just one goal short of an NCAA tournament bid. Last year, Berry boasted seven All-SAA players with Cory Hall receiving SAA Player of the Year accolades. Defender Jack Chase earned Berry College Male Athlete of the Year. Both Hall and Chase also garnered USILA Scholar All-America distinction, and Hall was also chosen to play in the USILA North/South AllStar game. Replacing the void left from these two seniors will be important for the Vikings’ success in 2016. -Optimism on Offense “This season has the potential to be special for the Berry lacrosse program,” said Gilbert. “Everyone in our program wants to put both Berry College and Georgia on the map in the Lacrosse community.” The Viking offense flourished under Assistant Coach Reed Peterson’s guidance in his first season, and the team is excited for improvement in 2016. This offense will be lead by senior co-captains Christian Akers (Roanoke, VA / Roanoke Catholic) and Jake Emche (Berlin, MD/Worcester Prep). Akers scored 31 goals and had six assists last year. Emche produced 20 goals and 14 helpers for the Vikings. Adding to the offensive firepower are juniors Quentin Johnson (Alpharetta, GA / Chattahoochee) and Miller Hollstein (Duluth, GA / Peachtree Ridge) and sophomores Matt Dominguez (Suwanee, GA/Peachtree Ridge), Paolo Falzi (Airdrie, Alberta/St. Martin DePorres) and Stephen Galloway (Marietta, GA/Hillgrove). Johnson is the top returning point scorer with 40 (17 goals, 23 assists).
2016 Season Preview Part 2 -Experience and Youth on Defense The defensive end of the field will see new faces as Berry graduated a large core of its starters. Leading the charge will be a trio of co-captains in seniors Nick Voso (Peachtree City, GA/Blue Ridge School), Garrett Miller (Duluth, GA/Peachtree Ridge), and sophomore Michael Troy (Lake Grove, NY/Ward Melville). As a goalkeeper, Voso went 9-4 in goal with a 53-percent save percentage as a junior. Rounding out the defense will be juniors James Kurila (Oveido, FL/Paul J. Haggerty), Cole Sommi (Knoxville, TN/Farragut), Phillip Yount (Evans, GA/Greenbrier), and sophomores Jacob Kaplan (Matthews, NC/Charlotte Christian), Juan Castilla (Chattahoochee, GA/Chattahoochee), and Chris Ferguson (Acworth, GA/Allatoona). -Talented Newcomers Join Team The 2015-16 season will feature another large recruiting class as Gilbert is trying to get the team roster to his ideal 40-44 student-athlete range. A few newcomers stood out in their fall performances. Standout offensive efforts were seen from Chris Berchock (Alpharetta, GA/Chattahoochee), Thomas Brennan (Cornelius, NC/Davidson Day), Andrew Elgin (Naples, FL/Gulf Coast), McKinley Gannon (Ooltewah, TN/McCallie School), Hudson Harris (Charlotte, NC/Lake Norman Charter), Bailey Martin (Wilmington, DE/ Salesianum/Univeristy of Vermont), Nick Murphy (Cherokee, GA/Cherokee), Justin Westbrook (Duluth, GA/Northview) and Jason Wilhelm (Lakeway, TX/Lake Travis). Equally strong defensive play was evident from rookies Josh Baker (Suwanee, GA/Greater Atlanta Christian), Kyle Rouleau (Suwanee, GA/ Peachtree Ridge), Nathan Taylor (Lakeland, FL/Summerlin Military Acad.) and returning junior goalkeeper Zack McConnell (Rome, GA/Darlington School). Additionally, junior Koda-Wataka Robinson (Camas, WA/Kings Way/New England College) transferred to Berry College mid-year and looks to leave his mark in the spring. -First Game is February 12th After a strong showing this past fall in Berry’s Face-Off for a Cause--an event which raised more than $6,600 for the Wounded Warriors Project--the Vikings are eager to host Colorado College at Valhalla on Friday, February 12. The season-opening match begins at 3:30 p.m.
Curtis Gilbert Head Coach
Curtis Gilbert is in his third year at Berry College entering the 2016 season. He was hired as the Vikings' head men's lacrosse coach in September, 2013. In the 2015 season, Gilbert improved his overall record to 23-9, losing only one game in the Southern Athletic Association. Gilbert led his team to a second place finish in the SAA Championships, garnering seven All-SAA honors in the process, including the Offensive Player of the Year title awarded to Cory Hall. Hall and Jack Chase also earned post-season recognition as All-American Scholars from the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association for their success both in the classroom and on the field, and Hall was invited to join the 63 other best senior lacrosse players in the country at the annual USILA North/South All-Star Game. In his first year at BC, he led the Vikings to an 11-4 record in 2014. The Vikings were 5-2 in the SAA and had nine student-athletes earn All-SAA honors. Gilbert arrived from New England College in Henniker, N.H. In 2012, he led NEC to a berth into the NCAA DIII Men’s Lacrosse Tournament after winning the program’s first North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Championship. During his six years at NEC, Gilberts teams played in 4 Championship games, and produced the programs only 2 All-Americans. Prior to New England College, Gilbert was an assistant lacrosse coach at Denison University in Granville, Ohio. While at Denison, Gilbert helped lead the Big Red to an impressive 20 wins, two NCAC Championships and two NCAA Tournament appearances. Before Denison, Gilbert had stints as an assistant lacrosse coach at Washington College and Whittier College. Over two seasons at Washington College Gilbert led the Shoremen to a record of 28-8, a school-record 15-game winning streak, and an NCAA Semifinal appearance. At Whittier, he helped the Poets to a record of 21-3 and two national tournament appearances--including one NCAA quarterfinal and a semifinal appearance. Gilbert is a graduate of Washington College, where he was a four-year member of the men’s lacrosse team. While at WC, Gilbert was a member of the 1998 NCAA Division III championship team and garnered all-conference accolades. In addition to coaching lacrosse, Gilbert serves on various committees including the USILA Top 20 poll and All-American Committee. He graduated with a master’s degree in management and strategic leadership from NEC. Gilberts All-Time record over 14 seasons is 152 W-79 L’s.
Reed Peterson Assistant Coach
Reed Peterson returns for his second season after being hired as an assistant men’s lacrosse coach at Berry College in August 2014. He joined Head Coach Curtis Gilbert’s staff from Centre College, also a member of the Southern Athletic Association. In Peterson’s first season on the coaching staff, the offense flourished under his guidance and earned an appearance in the SAA Conference Championship after finishing the regular season as Conference Co-Champions where Cory Hall received Offensive Player of the Year honors. Prior to Berry College, Peterson coached at Centre since its inaugural 2010 season. He helped the Colonels reach consecutive NCAA Tournaments and win a Southern Athletic Association regular season championship and SAA Tournament championship in the team’s first four seasons of play. In four seasons at Centre, Peterson coached 26 all-conference selections with attacker Zack Connors earning SCAC Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2012. Centre also set school records for wins in a season with 13 and consecutive wins with 11. Peterson’s lacrosse playing career took him to two NCAA Division I programs. He started at Canisius College and completed his playing career at Bellarmine University, earning varsity letters each season. Before college, the Green Bay, Wisconsin native played at Mariemont High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. While at Mariemont, Peterson was a two-time Position Player of the Year, two-time First Team All-State selection and a U.S. Lacrosse All-American. He led Mariemont to its first state title appearance in 2003.
Ken Byers Assistant Coach
Ken Byers returns for his fifth year as an assistant coach for the Berry College Vikings in 2015-16. Coach Byers was with the Berry College program during its initial seasons and has helped take a young start-up program into one that has played in the Conference Championship in two of its last three years. Byers has spent time with both coaching staffs and continues to strengthen both the foundation of the program while also taking it to new heights. Prior to arriving at Berry, Byers established a nationally recognized MCLA program at Kennesaw State University. His six year KSU career record is 61-28. Coach Byers was selected as the SELC Coach of the Year in 2009 and 2011. His 2010 KSU squad was awarded the James “Ace” Adams award for sportsmanship. Before his tenure at KSU, Ken started the program at Etowah High School. He also was an assistant coach at Roswell HS from 1999-2001, earning a public high school championship in 1999. From 1982-2002 he was a player/coach for the Atlanta Lacrosse Club. He produced an overall team record of 307 wins and 104 losses. Coach Byers played for national junior college powerhouse Suffolk Community College on Long Island. He completed his collegiate career as a defenseman at Kutztown State in Pennsylvania. Byers plays competitive lacrosse in national tournaments at the grand masters level. Coach Byers is a member of the Positive Coaching Alliance and is a certified lacrosse official. On January 28, 2007 he was inducted into the Georgia Lacrosse Hall of Fame for his outstanding accomplishments to the sport of lacrosse in the state of Georgia. In addition to lacrosse, Byers served more than 31 years as a member of the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department. He retired as an assistant chief and shift commander.
Meet the Captains Jake Emche #6 – Initially sidelined by in-
jury his freshmen year, Emche has bounced back to become one of the best attackmen in the SAA conference. His early years saw him excel on the crease at attack, but has since transitioned into a more versatile player and was voted to the all-tournament team in the SAA Championships. His leadership style is stoic but direct and to the point. He is a marketing major.
Garrett Miller #9 - A two-sport athlete in high school, Miller quickly made his impact at close defense and has served in a fringe role for a couple of years before looking for his breakout senior season. Known for his boisterous enthusiasm and selfless acts of leadership, Miller has twice earned the teams “Heartbeat” award. His leadership style is vocal and passionate and is often times the lifeblood and pulse of the team. He is a marketing major. Nick Voso #15 – Having initially paid
his dues behind the starting goalie his first two-seasons, Voso was poised to have a break out season in 2015. He garnered all-tournament MVP accolades in the SAA championships and looks to secure his spot at the top in 2016. Voso’s quest to be the best defense is evident in his passionate and commanding goalie play. His leadership style is similar where he speaks from the heart and people respond. He is a finance major.
Meet the Captains Christian Akers #21 – A stand-
out football and lacrosse player in high school, Akers quickly made his impact felt at the defensive midfield position before gradually making his way to the offensive end of the field. Known for his athleticism and grit, he is one of the hardest working players on the field. His leadership style can be described as reserved but leads by example of every single play. He is an exercise science major.
Mike Troy #32 - As a member of
the 2013 New York State Championship team, Troy has brought a unique attitude and work ethic to the Berry program. His drive for success and intensely competitive nature resounded in last year’s senior class when voting for 2016 captains. Troy is the programs youngest captain ever. His leadership style is demanding and accountable. He is a finance marketing major.
