Movember is a global movement that works to raise awareness of the issues in men’s health. The name comes from the idea of Mustache November or Movember. The idea behind Movember is that on November 1 men start with a clean-shaven face. For the rest of the month these selfless and generous men groom, trim and wax their way into the annals of fine mustachery. Supported by the women in their lives, Mo Sistas, Mo Bros raise funds by seeking out sponsorships for their Mogrowing efforts. The Berry College Men’s Lacrosse team effectively became walking, talking billboards for 30 days of Movember 2016. By growing a Mo, they raised awareness, prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health.

2017 SEASON PREVIEW The Berry Men’s Lacrosse team is ready to win a SAA Championship and earn the NCAA Tournament bid that has been eluding them. The outof-conference play that includes some of the top teams in their respective regions include Hampden-Sydney, Colorado College, Salve Regina and Wittenberg will prepare the Vikings for their conference play this year. With the experience from last season, the expectations have been raised to a new level. The 2016 season featured the third graduating class of seniors and a team that reached the SAA Semi-Finals. This graduating class of four seniors helped lead a young nucleus of freshmen through a schedule with four NCAA tournament teams. The 2016 season boasted five All-Conference players, with returners Jacob Kaplan and Quentin Johnson earning second

Team All-Conference honors. Their leadership and ability to teach quickly has the remaining players on the roster prepped for winning a conference championship in 2017. “There is a newfound energy within the 2017 team that is contagious and eager to ‘Win the Day’. Too much emphasis was placed on achieving our goal of a SAA Championship last year, that we forgot about the process,” explains Coach Gilbert. The 2017 schedule will again face nationally-ranked opponents and NCAA Tournament qualifiers alike, but Gilbert stresses that, “every day is a new opportunity to grow and become more capable of excellence in life and Lacrosse. We are eagerly awaiting our first game on Feb. 11, and after that we will prepare for our next challenge.” The Vikings offense is looking to set the pace for the conference with

many options and Coach Petersons’ guidance in 2017. This offensive unit will be lead by senior Quentin Johnson (Alpharetta, Ga.), who looks to lead the offense to be the best in the SAA. Juniors Bailey Martin (Wilmington, Del.) and Paolo Falzi (Airdrie, AB) are legitimate scoring threats that will have a huge impact on the season. The sophomore class is chock full of talent with Chris Berchock (Alpharetta, Ga.), Thomas Brennan (Cornelius, N.C.), Andrew Elgin (Naples, Fla.), McKinley Gannon (Ooltewah, Tenn.), Hudson Harris (Charlotte, N.C.), 2016 All-SAA Honorable Mention Justin Westbrook (Duluth, Ga.) and Jason Wilhem (Lakeway, Texas) all providing the scoring balance needed to complete the offensive unit. The defensive end of the field will get a shake-up again this year with the graduation of Nick Voso. Seniors James Kurila (Oviedo, Fla.), Cole Sommi (Knoxville, Tenn.), Phillip Yount (Evans, Ga.) and Miller Hollstein (Duluth, Ga.) will provide great leadership this season because of the many positions they have played in the defensive end. Juniors Matt Dominguez (Suwanee, Ga.), Chris Ferguson (Acworth, Ga.) and Jacob Kaplan (Matthews, N.C.) all will see the field this year. Kyle Rouleau (Suwanee, Ga.) is the lone sophomore in the defensive end and will make an impact after a strong showing in the fall season.
Another large freshman class adds even more depth and includes: Landon Bosworth (Orlando, Fla.), Hudson Bradley (Lexington, Ky.), Riley Brogdon (Lawrenceville, Ga.), Sean Canfield (Orlando, Fla.), Dylan Cantoral (Carrollton, Ga.), James Caswell (Austin, Texas), Sam Druelinger (Germantown, Tenn.), Cole Johnson (Alpharetta, Ga.), Miles Mitchell (Hendersonville, Tenn.), Kevin Murphy (Vero Beach, Fla.), Evan Sale (West Bloomfield, Mich.), Matt Tatum (Avondale Estates, Ga.) and Ryan Wilson (Suwanee, Ga). Additionally, there are two transfers, Luke Koferl (Huntersville, N.C.) and Nick Zakucia (Chattahoochee, Ga.). The 2017 season provides real opportunity for the Vikings to win the SAA Conference Championship and host the SAA Tournament this season. Last year, the squad cut their teeth against strong national talent, which has prepared this year’s team to prove they are a national contender. After a strong showing this past fall in Berry’s Face-Off for a Cause, the 2017 squad is eager to begin practice and after a series of scrimmages will play host to Huntingdon College at Valhalla Stadium on Saturday, February 11, at 3:00 p.m.

MEET THE HEAD COACH Curtis Gilbert heads into his fourth season as the Berry College Men’s Lacrosse head coach with building momentum. In 2016 the team played the hardest schedule to date, playing four national ranked teams and NCAA tournament teams. During that season the team reached the conference semifinals after winning tough games down the stretch of the season. The 2015 team led by Gilbert earned second place in the SAA finals after capturing the 2105 regular season Co-Championship. There were seven players who earned All-SAA Honors including Cory Hall who was the Offensive Player of the Year. Hall and Jack Chase also earned post-season Academic All-American Honors from the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association for their success. Hall was invited to play in the USILA North/South game that included the top 63 senior lacrosse players in the nation. In his first year at Berry, Gilbert led the Vikings to an 11-4 record in 2014. The Vikings were 5-2 in the SAA and had nine students earn All-SAA Honors. Gilbert arrived from New England College in Henniker, N.H. In 2012, he led NEC to a berth into the NCAA DIII Men’s Lacrosse Tournament after winning the program’s first North Atlantic Conference Championship. During his six years at NEC, Gilbert’s teams played in four championship games, and produced the program’s only two All-Americans. PA G E 6
Prior to New England College, Gilbert was an assistant lacrosse coach at Denison University in Granville, Ohio. While there, Gilbert helped lead the Big Red to an impressive 20 wins, two NCAC Championships and two NCAA tournament appearances. Before Denison, Gilbert had stints as an assistant lacrosse coach at Washington College and Whittier College. Over two seasons at Washington College, Gilbert led the Shoreman to a record of 28-8, a school record 15-game winning streak and an NCAA semi-final appearance. At Whittier, he helped the Poets to a record of 21-3 and two national tournament appearances, including one NCAA quarterfinal and semi-final appearance. In addition to coaching lacrosse, Gilbert serves on various committees including the USILA Top 20 Poll and All-American Committee. He graduated with a master’s degree in management and strategic leadership from NEC. Gilbert’s all time record over 15 seasons is 160-88.

MEET THE ASSISTANTS Reed Peterson returns for his third season as the offensive coordinator at Berry College. The offense looks to improve after a year they led the conference in manup percentage and had sixty percent of their goals assisted. In Peterson’s first season on the coaching staff, the offense flourished under his guidance and earned an appearance in the SAA conference championship game after finishing as regular season co-champions. Prior to Berry College, Peterson coached at Centre College since its inaugural 2010 season. He helped the Colonels reach consecutive NCAA Tournaments and win the Southern Athletic Association regular season championship and SAA tournament in the teams first four seasons of play. Over the four years at Centre he coached 26 all conference players with attackmen Zack Connors earning SCAC Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2012. Centre also set school records for wins in a season with 13 and consecutive wins with 11. Peterson’s lacrosse playing career took him to two NCAA Division I programs. He started at Canisius College and finished his four years at Bellarmine University. Peterson was born in Green Bay, WI.
Ken Byers returns for his sixth year as an assistant coach for Berry College. Coach Byers was with the Berry College program during its initial season and has helped take a young start-up program into one that has played in the Conference Championship twice. Byers has spent time with both coaching staffs and continues to strengthen both the foundation of the program while taking it to new heights. Prior to arriving at Berry, Byers established a nationally recognized MCLA program at Kennesaw State University. His six year KSU career record is 61-28. Coach Byers was selected as the SELC Coach of the Year in 2009 and 2011. His 2010 KSU squad was awarded the James “Ace” Adams award for sportsmanship. Byers played for national junior college powerhouse Suffolk Community College on Long Island. He completed his collegiate career as a defenseman at Kutztown State in Pennsylvania. Byers is a member of the Positive Coaching Alliance and is a certified lacrosse official. On January 28, 2007 he was inducted into the Georgia Lacrosse Hall of Fame for his outstanding accomplishments in the sport of lacrosse. In addition to lacrosse, Byers served 32 years as a member of the Atlanta Fire Department and retired as an assistant chief.

MEET THE CAPTAIN Quentin Johnson comes into his senior year as the lone captain of the Berry College Men’s Lacrosse team. He is a transfer from Emmanuel College that has been the quarterback of the offense the past two seasons. Johnson, known for his feeding ability, has accounted for 80 points in two years of lacrosse. He is the one who sets the pace of the offense and carries the ball when the game is on the line. His leadership style can be described as “leading by example” and never looking to pass the bucket to someone else.
MEET THE SENIORS James Kurila has been a staple of the Berry College defense in every season he has been on the team. He quickly adapted to college play because he has the fitness level that gives him the ability to be a utility player that can fulfill multiple roles and positions. Known for his versatility, he is dangerous on both sides of the field and that plays into his leadership style of “finish the job”.
Miller Hollstein comes into his senior year as one of the most versatile players in Berry College history. He has started at Attack, Midfield, Long Pole Midfield and Short Stick Defensive Midfield during his first three years at Berry College. Hollstein has the ability to be a threat all over the field and change the game. He is like another assistant coach on the field because of his experience that will only help this young team excel.

Cole Sommi comes into his senior year ready for a breakout year after working his way into the starting defensive rotation last season. The most blue-collar player on the team, Sommi represents toughness and a strong will more than anyone else on the roster. His leadership style is strong and silent only speaking up when the time is right.
Phil Yount transferred in from Emmanuel College to step right into the role of Long Stick Midfield. He is a student of the game, which puts him the right places on the field. Known for his ground ball ability and enthusiasm, Yount is a hub for energy that spreads throughout the team.
