ming, attractive, storybook Hallmark mplementing the picturesque small town emites already know and others will iate even more.

“Currently, we’re in Phase IV,” Simpson says, of the Streetscape project that is almost entirely funded from federal grants. It began in January 2020 (right before the COVID pandemic), and there are two remaining phases.

Simpson cites contributions from a lot of sources for making Streetscape a success, including the foresight of Ben Trip and Salem City Council to pursue the grants to make downtown more attractive; Todd Sutphin and Salem’s Street Department; and A.K. Briel and Salem’s Electric Department, to name only a few. The contractor is Virginia Infrastructure out of Lexington.

This Salem Streetscape will build out the downtown area, pretty much along Main Street, from Thompson Memorial

Drive (at Longwood Park on the eastern entrance) to Academy and Union Streets. It also expands southward along S. College Avenue for a few blocks.

The future could see streetscaping that extends farther… perhaps beyond the Salem Museum (east) and to the Salem Duck Pond (west) on Main (which is also US 460).

That would be after the completion of this project, which is expected to “take five or six years all together,” Simpson says.

A lot of Salem residents agree with one lifelong resident in the Langhorne Place neighborhood, who said he’s encouraged by the improvements.

“I love the red brick; and I like having the option to sit outside at tables in front of the shops.”

A small business owner said the Streetscape makes a real difference.

“Look at other towns that have downtowns like this. You want to spend your time in places that are pleasing.”

Is Salem Streetscape worth the wait?

Most say, absolutely. And it’s not even finished, yet.

COLLEGE

With a campus in the heart of downtown Salem, just one block off Main Street, Roanoke College has long understood that an education doesn’ t stop at the classroom door. That’s why the independent, four-year

college, which brings up to 2,000 students per year into the city, has a track record of investing in collaborations that connect the community with its students, helping both grow together.

“Roanoke College is more than just a place of learning; it’s an integral part of the wonderful region it calls home,” said President Frank Shushok Jr. “By building lasting partnerships, we’re uniquely positioned to nurture

innovation, contribute to the cultural landscape and create opportunities that uplift us all.”

Since the college’s founding in 1842, that strong town-and-gown philosophy

has yielded everything from internship and research opportunities leading to the modern day college’s 100% Real-World Learning Guarantee — to service-oriented projects like the R House partnership, which brings together all incoming freshmen each year to help build a Habitat for Humanity house for a local family.

The campus is continually evolving to meet the needs of its students and community by creating essential learning and leadership experiences that help shape the workforce of the future.

Here is a look at just a few key initiatives it launched in the past year.

Building workforce partnerships

As part of its forward-thinking strategic plan, Roanoke College established a campus-community partnership to create workforce development programs carefully tailored to the needs of the region’s working professionals.

Roanoke College-Roanoke Valley (RC-RV) will work hand-in-hand with businesses, nonprofits and community leaders to design programs that bridge crucial gaps in the valley’s certification and training needs.

The partnership is supported by a generous $1 million gift from Roanoke College graduate Peter Treiber and his wife, Irene, who spoke of the important

role that continuing education plays in creating vibrant, 21st century communities.

“This is not just a Roanoke College initiative,” Peter Treiber said. “This is a valley initiative.”

Game on

When the college’s football team took to the field for its first game last fall, it wasn’ t just the start of a new season; it was the start of a new era for Roanoke Valley sports.

College football hadn’ t been played here since 1942, when the urgent demands of World War II brought an end to Roanoke College’s program.

The decision to revive the sport on campus was met with an outpouring of support from the community a level of enthusiasm reflected on game day when a jaw-dropping crowd of over 9,000 people packed Salem Stadium.

“It’s been incredible to see this community rally around us, particularly for our players, many of whom are local kids who signed on to help us create this program from scratch,” said Head Coach Bryan Stinespring.

“For them to come out and see that amazing crowd, that was really special. It tells you a lot about this place and how we show up for each other.”

Next-gen learning

In a move that will transform STEM learning for all its future students, Roanoke College broke ground on the state-of-the-art Shaun McConnon Discovery Center. The multi-part project will reimagine the campus’s science buildings, starting with a brand-new $30 million facility, which will replace the decades-old Massengill Auditorium. The result will be cutting-edge resources that will serve one-third of all campus courses and more than one-half of all student research projects. Every student, regardless of major, will take classes in the buildings as part of their foundational math and science requirements.

The new discovery center also will be an asset for the community, envisioned as a gateway where all are welcome to gather for events and lectures that help us learn and collaborate. During the groundbreaking ceremony, Salem Mayor Renée Turk, a Roanoke College graduate, said the community has long benefited from the programs and resources offered by the campus.

“Roanoke College has a tremendous partnership with the City of Salem and the entire Roanoke Valley,” Turk said.

“They have added so much to the quality of life for our citizens... We work together.

Roanoke College is Salem, and Salem is Roanoke College.”
